1 Physical Education Lesson Grade: 9 Unit: Intro to Speedball Date: November 20 General Specific Basic Activities Benefits Health Cooperation Do it Daily For Life Application of Basic Functional Fitness Body Image Well-being Communica Fair Play Leader-ship TeamworkEffort Safety Goal tion Setting/ personal Challenge X X X X Active Living in the Community Introduction/Warm Up Ask Students who has played Speedball before. Explain it is a sport that combines basketball, soccer and handball. Learning Activities/Teaching Strategies Mini Game: (4-5 minutes) Set up 3 or 4 courts across the width of the gym, use pylons to separate courts. Each endzone should have a Large Cone that will be the target of scoring Divide students in to 6 or 8 teams with pinnies Starting Rules: A basic game of handball. Student with the ball can take 3 steps before passing it to a team mate. Objective: Score a point by throwing the Rhino ball at the pylon of the opposing team. Progression#1 (2 minutes): Stop playing handball and now play soccer. Must kick ball against pylon to score a point Assessment/Evaluation/Comments Remind students they can NOT dribble the ball. If ball is dropped it becomes the other team s ball Remind students about getting open and putting their hands up and call for the ball Progression #2 (2 minutes): Combine two sports. If playing handball and the ball hits the ground students must continue playing soccer until a point is scored or the ball goes out of bounds. It will then go back to handball. Students can NOT kick ball up to themselves Progression #3 (2 minutes): If the ball is dropped it can now be kicked up to a team mate. Progression #4 (3 minutes) Combine Courts & teams so that there is only 2 courts and 4 teams. Add in the use of Hockey Nets (or Soccer nets) instead of the pylons. Progression #5 (3 minutes): Rotate the teams and add in the addition of the basketball net. Progression #6: Use the full gym for one court. Either combine the teams for 2 teams or leave them as four and have them rotate on. KTP - you can score by throwing the ball in the net or kicking it. Scoring on the net is worth 1 point KTP - scoring on the basketball net is worth 2 points. New Rule: at some point in the game can change the rules to a passing scheme of boy/girl/boy/girl Closure/Cool Down Ask: What are the two ways you can move the ball in this game? Which net is easier to score on? New Rule: Have two Rhino balls going at the same time

2 Equipment pylons for boundaries 6-8 large pylons for targets at least 4 sets of pinnies 3-4 Rhino/Gator balls 4 hockey/soccer nets 4 basketball hoops Safety Considerations Keep your head up while running around try to be aware of those around you
