4 P A G E 4 SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR AWARDS A huge congratulations to Kevin Fenwick who won the Volunteer Administrator award at the 2015 Taranaki Daily News Sports Person of the Year for Fenwick played a big part in bringing the Basketball Associations in Taranaki together in a united approach which led to the formation of Basketball Taranaki Incorporated he has been chairperson since 2012, and is also the financial officer. Responsible for all Taranaki age group teams competing in the Under-13, 15, 17, 19, and 23 Basketball New Zealand National tournaments, Fenwick is described as being dedicated to Taranaki players having every possible opportunity on a local, national, and international level. His work ethic and time given to the sport is described as phenomenal. Congratulations to our other contestants: Cameron Trethewey and Matthew O Connell were nominated for Junior sportsman of the year. They both played in the Under 16 Boys New Zealand team this year, along with playing in their school and Under 19 Taranaki teams. Joellen How was nominated for Junior Sportswoman of the year. Joellen played in the New Zealand under 17 Girls team, along with playing in the Taranaki Woman's and U17 Girls team and NPGHS Hawks. 5 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 5 P A G E 5 3x3 Basketball Court at Sport Taranaki Sport Taranaki have recently constructed a 3x3 Basketball Court (half court). The court is for the Taranaki public to use so come down and have a shoot around or have a scrimmage with your mates!! The entrance is off Maratahu Street and the court is positioned between the Sport Taranaki and Yarrow Stadium building. Come down and enjoy the new Basketball court Referee Section Game clock not running when ball is in play There is a belief in the basketball community that when the clock does not run, anything that occurs during this period is not valid, and play returns to the initial place that the clock was stopped at. This is not correct. Whilst this is not a correctable error as such, the ruling with regards to this can be found under 'Article 44 Correctable errors'. Any error in scorekeeping, time-keeping and shot clock operations by the table officials involving the score, number of fouls, number of time-outs, game clock and shot clock time consumed or omitted, may be corrected by the officials at any time before the referee signs the score sheet. In effect once the referee discovers that the clock has not stopped, they should stop the game. Should they feel this would disadvantage a team, wait until the next appropriate opportunity. The time should be corrected, any fouls committed, points scored etc. should be valid and play resumed from the point at which the game was interrupted.
6 P A G E 6 Custom College Recruiting (CCR) Seminar Custom College Recruitments trip to Taranaki On the 5 th of November approximately 65 people packed in to Sport Taranaki in New Plymouth to listen about the possibility of going or having their child playing Basketball and studying in America. BBNZ has partnered with CCR (Custom College Recruiting), naming them their preferred recruiting service, in order to provide NZ athletes with a trusted resource in seeking options to play college basketball in the US or Canada and open them to opportunities CCR can offer by connecting athletes with THOUSANDS of college coaches. If you missed the seminar and want to know more about this opportunity go to erecruiting.com/ 3x3 National Quest Tour The game of 3X3 is ranked the World s No.1 urban team sport. It s a game that FIBA are working hard to promote and develop globally. FIBA 3X3 events are being staged in downtown locations against a backdrop of the most iconic cityscapes on the planet. New Zealand's premiere 3X3 event is known as the Burger King 3X3 Quest Tour. The 3x3 Quest Tour is coming to Taranaki on Saturday the 30 January 2016 at New Plymouth Girls' High School. 7 P A G E 7 Taranaki Mountainair s New Head Coach Taranaki Basketball Club are pleased to announce Ross McMains as the new coach for the Taranaki Mountainair s. McMains is the current Tall Blacks assistant coach and has built up an impressive resume working with D-league and NBA teams over recent years. McMains is relishing getting started in his first head coach role at this level. This is a fantastic opportunity to work at the foundations of New Zealand basketball, says McMains. I am excited to get to work impacting basketball throughout the Taranaki region and building a winning culture. There is great local talent to work with and a strong organisation to bring new players to the area. I m really looking forward to getting to work with players on the court and meeting people in the community of New Plymouth. Though young, McMains has already had plenty of coaching experience, and worked with some top names like NBA players, Klay Thompson, Al Jefferson, Kyle Korver and Nikola Vucevic. He has been obsessed with the game of basketball from a very young age, coaching his first team at the age of 11. His parents gave him an NBA playbook, which fascinated him. Between 12 and 18 that s all I studied. From the age of 16, McMains started attending coaching clinics in the US, and realised he d found his vocation. He returned to New Zealand at the age of 18 and the Breakers gave him his first break, as an intern video analyst. Taranaki Basketball Club chairman, Bernie Smith, says McMains contacts and knowledge of the game were important factors in his selection. After consulting with our local players, everyone was keen for further development. The committee recognised a full-time coach would be able to put more time and training into the players, than the part-time set-up we ve had over recent years. Our goal this season is to really give the talented young players we have in the region the opportunity to train and develop with one of New Zealand s top coaches. There is also an assistant coach role and technical coach role to be filled and Ross is planning on utilising some of our local coaching talent, said Smith. The 2016 NBL season begins on the 10 th March and the first home game for the Taranaki Mountainairs is at 7pm on Sunday, 27 th March. Season Passes are available now through Ticketmaster with a pre-xmas sale on, adult pass only $80! H O O P S V I B E 5
