MAKING AN IMPACT TOGETHER AS ONE To look at the 2005 Georgia Tech volleyball team and consider them a young team would be an understatement. With only four upperclassmen (three seniors and one junior) on a 13-man roster, the Yellow Jackets will have to rely on the play of several sophomores and freshman to maintain the level of success it has experienced the past three seasons under head coach Bond Shymansky. The Yellow Jackets do return four starters to a team which finished with a 27-7 record, including a perfect 16-0 season in ACC play, and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, but have the challenge of replacing five starters, including all- Americans Lynnette Moster and Jayme Gergen, from the 2004 squad. When you look at our roster, there s no doubt that we are young, but we are reloading, not rebuilding, said head coach Bond Shymansky, who begins his fourth season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets. However, this year s team is one of the most athletic teams I ve ever coached and I m very excited about what they have a chance to accomplish. We have the opportunity to test our skills against the best this season and know that remaining a top competitor Abby Showers in the ACC will be an even bigger challenge this season with so many strong teams, said Shymansky. The Jackets return four starters in Lindsey Laband (Monument, Colo.), Jennifer Randall (Long Beach, Calif.), Abby Showers (Vandalia, Ohio, and Ulrike Stegemann (Schwerin, Germany). The four returning starters have gained a great deal of experience and played in some big matches over the last few years, said Shymansky. But every player on our roster has a chance to make significant contributions to our team this year and we will have new players stepping up to fuel our success. Laband, a senior, returns as Tech s setter, and was named to the preseason all-acc team earlier this year. Last season, Laband had a breakout year, earning AVCA Honorable Mention All- America honors after leading the nation in assists per game. There s no question that Lindsey turned a lot of heads last season and surprised a number of people, said Shymansky. She is the key to our offensive efficiency and does a fantastic job of making sure our offense runs at the fastest pace in the nation. Showers returns for her junior campaign and after a season as a starter at defensive specialist, will see playing time on the rightside and at setter for the Yellow Jackets this year. Abby knows what it is like to be a starter and was a big reason why our passing efficiency was strong last season, said Shymansky. She continued to improve during the spring and has become a leader for our team on and off the court. She s so gifted athletically that there are a number of positions she will see time at this year as she is versatile and exceptional in every skill. Returning for her fourth year as a starter but moving to libero for the first time in her career is Randall, who has been a vital part of the Jackets success the last three years and was named to the All-ACC Preseason team this year. Last season, Randall finished the year third on the team in digs per game (2.44) and her ball control is one of the reasons why Tech s offense has been nationally ranked the last three years. Jennifer has been a quiet player for us the last three seasons and probably hasn t gotten the recognition that she Lindsey Laband deserves. She plays with a great deal of confidence and on the court is in control of the game and that adds stability to our team, said Shymansky. She knows how to anticipate the opponent and has a gift for ball control and now at libero, her passing and defense will be an integral factor in our team s success. Setters What was once a position which lacked depth, has become one filled with the possibility of three players in just one year. Laband returns to the team with a year of starting experience under her belt, after running an offense which led the nation in kills per game in Lindsey did such a great job last year of stepping in and running our team and I have no doubt that she ll do it again this season, said Shymansky. She possesses speed, agility, great decision-making skills, and has a great comfort level with her hitters. She always strives to be the best. In addition to Laband, joining the Yellow Jackets this fall is Allie Niekamp (Findlay, Ohio), a Fab 50 selection by Volleyball Monthly. Standing at six feet tall, Niekamp has great hands and 6

vision on the court and could allow Tech to run a 6-2 offense. Allie has smooth hands and a big heart, said Shymansky. She will learn our offense quickly and will be a key to the future of our program. She wants to be the best but wants her teammates to be their best too, which is a great quality to have as as setter. Another player who could see time at the setting position is Showers, who gained experience in the spring season as a setter. Abby has a knack for setting and very strong hands, said Shymansky. Her athleticism allows her to take risks and that s what our offense is all about. No matter what position she plays, Abby will shine. Outside Hitters The biggest challenge facing the Yellow Jackets this year is filling the void at the outside hitting positions left by the graduation of Laura Kuhn, Lynnette Moster, and Lauren Sauer. Fortunately, Tech has a number of options at the position in Lindsey Gray (Lenexa, Kansas), Laura DeMichelis (Aurora, Colo.), Talisa Kellogg (Westerville, Ohio) and Showers. Gray enters her sophomore season after a year of experience as a backup behind Moster and Sauer. Although she played in only 13 matches, in the two matches she started, she averaged 4.67 kills per game and hit over.350. Lindsey showed us what she is capable of last season, said Ulrike Stegemann Lindsey Gray Shymansky. Her all-around game will make her a terminating force as an outside hitter and a stabilizing force as a passer. Although listed as a freshman, DeMichelis joins the team after enrolling at Tech in January and going through the spring season with the Jackets. A Fab 50 selection by Volleyball Magazine, DeMichelis should instantly add power and experience at the outside hitting position. It was huge having Laura here this spring, said Shymansky. She improved so much and is one of the most explosive athletes we ve ever had at Georgia Tech. I expect her to make an immediate impact on our team. Kellogg joins the team for her first season and has a chance to immediately compete for playing time at outside hitter. The daughter of CBS Basketball Analyst Clark Kellogg, she is an explosive hitter who will add a great deal to the outside hitting position for the Jackets. Talisa has a ton of power and surprising skill, said Shymansky. What stands out the most about her though, is her passion. She will make players around her better and be a force to be reckoned with as a hitter and a blocker. Also returning as a hitter to Tech s lineup is Showers, who trained during the spring season on the rightside for the Jackets. Abby is a gamer and knows how to hit around, through, and off the block, said Shymansky. She finds a way to score and will be a good tool in our offense. Middle Blockers The other major challenge facing the Jackets this season is replacing Jayme Gergen, who was a three-year starter for Tech and finished 11th in the nation in hitting percentage in The Jackets do return Stegemann, who broke into the starting lineup in September and was to the All-ACC Freshman team a year ago. Ulli has a fast arm swing and quickly learned how to use it in our fast offense last season, said Shymansky. She will be a go-to hitter for us this year and I suspect will emerge as a team leader as the year progresses. In addition to Stegemann, the Jackets return Nikki Kaminskas (Flagstaff, Ariz.), who started three matches for Tech last season and who made great strides in the off-season. Nikki is such a hard worker and has improved so much in the last year, said Shymansky. She possesses an amazing work ethic and plays with a great deal of determination and with her height, is sure to be a presence on the court as a blocker. Tech also adds Callie Miller (Whitehouse, Ohio), the fourth Fab 50 selection by Volleyball Magazine to join the team this year. Miller stands at 6-1, but is a quick and explosive athlete who jumps well. Callie can jump out of the gym and has some great instincts, said Shymansky. She will be hard for opponents to handle and will be a joy to have on our team and has a great future in our program. Nikki Kaminskas 7

Jennifer Randall Backcourt As has been the case the last few years, Tech s backcourt possesses a great deal of experience, which is sure to help the Jackets with their offensive execution. Though we are known for our high powered offense, our ball control and defense will be the key to remaining an elite team, said Shymansky. Although Randall enters her first year as the libero for the Jackets, she has been a three-year starter as a defensive specialist and will be expected to be an even bigger piece to the Jackets serve reception and defense. Jennifer grew up with volleyball and has played since the third grade, said Shymansky. Her understanding of the game and touch on the ball are a result of more than a decade of training. She will be an anchor and will need to take over the backrow this year for us. A huge addition to the backcourt this year is Michelle Kandell (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), who was listed as one of the top defensive players by prepvolleyball.com and spent time last summer with the USA Junior National team. Michelle is a great defensive specialist, said Shymansky. She is highly skilled and highly motivated and I expect her to compete for time this season and make a serious contribution to our team this year. Also returning as defensive specialists are Showers, senior Katie Mohs (Atlanta, Ga.) who joined the team as a walk-on in 2003, and local player Stephanie Robbins (Atlanta, Ga.). Katie is one of the hardest working players on our team and established herself as a valuable backrow player for us this spring, said Shymansky. She will have a great senior year and inspire her teammates as well. Stephanie is an energetic and talented defensive specialist, said Shymansky. She plays with brains, heart and guts and will give us another strong option in the backrow. Schedule The 2005 schedule for Georgia Tech will again be a challenge for the Jackets as their schedule features seven matches against teams that participated in the 2004 NCAA Tournament, including opening the season at the University of Arizona tournament in Tucson, Arizona. Now that the ACC has gone to a double round robin format, our conference will be stronger than ever this year so it is crucial for us to be playing against strong competition early in the preseason, said Shymansky. To open play against a team from the Pac-10 will give us a great measuring stick and it s a chance to play in the home state of Nikki, which is something that we like to try and do, said Shymansky. Following the University of Arizona tournament, the Jackets will take part in tournaments at home in Atlanta on Sept. 9 and 10 and then in Athens, Ga. Sept. 17 and 18. We are excited to be hosting a tournament in O Keefe Gymnasium this year and also to have a chance to play at the University of Georgia, said Shymansky. The tournament in Athens features Michigan and Georgia, both of whom played in the NCAA Tournament Katie Mohs 2005 ACC Preseason All-Conference Team All Conference Selections Amy Beaver, North Carolina Carrie DeMange, Duke Katie Esbrook, Virginia Tech Ali Hausfeld, Duke Tealle Hunkus, Duke Karla Johnson, Miami Sarah Kirkwood, Virginia Lindsey Laband, Georgia Tech Melissa Markowski, Virginia Tech Dani Nyenhuis, North Carolina Brittany Ross, Clemson Kristin Rust, Florida State Andreza Santos, Florida State Stephanie Smith, Maryland Ulrike Stegemann, Georgia Tech Rachel Wagener, Maryland Defensive Selections Melissa Caldwell, Virginia Jennifer Randall, Georgia Tech last year and is great chance for us to get ready for the ACC which starts the following week. The Atlantic Coast Conference was ranked as the fifth toughest conference in the nation last season and Tech opens its conference schedule at home against Wake Forest and Duke before hitting the road to play against Florida State and Miami. As a conference, we graduated a number of key players, but this year s freshman class across the board is very talented and every team has a new player who will make an impact, said Shymansky. Without a tournament this year, we will have a chance to play every team in the ACC at home and away which is exciting. It would not surprise me to see three to four teams competing for the top spot in November. The NCAA Tournament begins Dec. 4th with the Final Four being held in San Antonio, Texas. We want to continue to improve each match and be playing at our best by the end of the season. The NCAA Tournament is a great opportunity to showcase our skills, said Shymansky. It will be important for our team to remain focused throughout the season and really work to improve each time we step on the court to achieve those goals. We expect to be right back in the same picture again this season. 8

HEAD COACH BOND SHYMANSKY Bond Shymansky Head Coaching File 2004 ACC Coach of the Year 2004 AVCA East Region Coach of the Year Career Record 44-4 ACC Record 6 AVCA All-Americans 6 players that have earned AVCA East Region Honors on 11 occassions 2 ACC Players of the Year 7 players that have earned All-ACC honors on 13 occassions Bond Shymansky, who in his first three years as the head coach at Georgia Tech has directed the Yellow Jackets to their most successful seasons in school history, enters his fourth year at the helm of the Yellow Jackets. Following two remarkable seasons in 2002 and 2003, Shymansky was just as impressive in his third season as the head coach. After opening the 2004 campaign with a preseason ranking of No. 12, the highest in school history, the Jackets began the year with a 2-5 record which included losses to nationally ranked USC, Colorado State, Wisconsin and Ohio State. Following the setback to the Buckeyes, Tech reeled off 21 straight victories, the second most in school history. Included in that run was 16 straight ACC wins, marking the first time in school history that had been achieved, and the first time since 1996 that it had been accomplished by an ACC school. Despite a disappointing ACC Tournament, the Jackets received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, their sixth straight, and upset No. 13 seed Santa Barbara to advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the second consecutive year, before losing at No. 4 Minnesota in a thrilling fivegame match. Along the way, the Jackets had three players earn AVCA All-America honors, including Lynnette Moster, who finished her career as the most decorated volleyball player in school history, earning All-America honors three times. In addition, Shymansky s team once again led the nation in assists per game (17.34) and kills per game (18.64) and ended the year seventh in hitting percentage (.300) while Lindsey Laband finished the year leading the nation in assists per game (15.40). For his efforts, Shymansky was named the 2004 AVCA East Region Coach of the Year and the 2004 ACC Coach of the year. His 2003 team began the season with a school-record 23 straight wins and went on to win a school-best 34 matches, advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 2 Hawai i. The Jackets showing in the NCAA Tournament marked the first time that a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference competed for the right to play in the Final Four. During the year, the Jackets began the season ranked 12th in the nation and moved up to as high as No. 4 in the polls, marking the highest ranking in ACC history. In the final poll of the year, Tech finished No. 8, again representing the highest final ranking in ACC history, and marking the first time that the Jackets had been ranked in every poll during a season. In addition, the team defeated four nationally-ranked opponents during the year and advanced to the ACC finals for the second straight season. Statistically, Shymansky s team finished the year leading the nation in assists per game (17.05) and kills per game (18.26) and finished fifth in 2 All-ACC Freshman Selections 2002 ACC Tournament Champions 2003 ACC Regular Season Championship 2004 ACC Regular Season Championship Assistant coaches Sally Schulte and Ben Bodipo-Memba with head coach Bond Shymansky make up one of the top coaching staffs in the nation. 9

Shymansky also coached a school-record four AVCA all-americans, including first-team selection Kele Eveland, second-team all- American Lynnette Moster and Alexandra Preiss and Lauren Sauer, who each earned honorable mention all-america accolades. In his first season, Shymansky coached the team to a 33-6 record and to the 2002 ACC Championship. The 2002 team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished ranked No. 17 in the final AVCA/USA Today Coaches Poll, which was the first time in seven years that Tech had been ranked in the final poll. In addition, Shymansky coached the program s first ever AVCA All-America in Moster and had four players earn all-acc honors. In just three seasons, Shymansky has averaged 31 wins and has posted a.847 winning percentage while each team he has coached has appeared in the top 25 of the final AVCA USA Today/Coaches Poll. Perhaps just as impressive as his success on the court, has been his recruiting classes. His 2005 class was ranked fourth by Volleyball Magazine, marking the highest class in school history and eighth by Prepvolleyball.com. The class also contains four Fab 50 selections, including Laura DeMichelis, Talisa Kellogg, Allie Niekamp and Callie Miller. The 2002 class, his first recruiting class as a head coach, was ranked 12th in the nation, the second highest ranked recruiting class at Georgia Tech, by Volleyball Magazine, and signees Blair Moon and Jennifer Randall were both named to the Fab 50 recruiting list by the same publication, while in 2003, in his first full year of recruiting, he signed two Fab 50 recruits in Sarah Hale and Abby Showers and had his recruiting class ranked No. 19 by PrepVolleyball.com. The Jackets experienced two of their finest seasons in the program s history with Shymansky as an assistant. In 2000, Tech finished the season with a 25-8 record, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and won the ACC regular- season championship. In 2001, the Jackets went 19-8 and earned their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his arrival at Georgia Tech, Shymansky spent two seasons on the coaching staff at Iowa State, including a fourmonth stint as the interim head coach in In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Shymansky has coached in the high school and club ranks. He was the head coach at Iowa City High School from , guiding his squad to the state semi-finals in his second season while also earning a nomination for Mississippi Valley Conference Coach of the Year. A native of Iowa City, Iowa, Shymansky began his volleyball career at the University of Iowa, where he participated on the men s volleyball club team as a setter and outside hitter from He earned a bachelor s degree in communications in 1995 and a master s degree in secondary English education in 1998 from Iowa. 11 Q&A with HEAD COACH BOND SHYMANSKY Q: This year s roster is comprised mostly of underclassmen. How will a young team respond to being the hunted instead of the hunters? A: We are very excited about our sophomore and freshman classes and they will prove to be the backbone of our future. But for this season we are relying heavily on the leadership of our standout upperclassmen as they will provide the stability, maturity and skill needed to keep us as one of the top teams in the nation. Q: O Keefe Gym has earned the reputation of being one of the toughest places for opponents to play and continues to be an intergral part of your program s success. Do you anticipate record setting attendance again this season? A: We really feel that we have the greatest fans in the nation. They are always loud, are very loyal and have a huge impact on the opponent. The 25-member Pep Band brings the crowd to a frenzied roar. In addition, we have created a new spectator area for our Swarm fans so they can be right on top of the action. I expect, just as in past seasons, O Keefe Gym will be rocking again this year. Q: How has the addition of the new lockerroom changed your program? A: Our new lockerroom is a first class facility and is indicative of the way our program is supported by our school, fans, and community. Our facility is now on par with the other top facilities around the country and recruits will walk in the door of the new lockerroom and will see first-hand how special it is. Q: What impact will the new round robin format have on the ACC? A: The ACC has risen to become one of the top four conferences in the nation and the level of play will make for a more challenging and exciting season playing a total of 22 matches in the regular season. We have enough depth in the conference to be tested week in and week out to prepare for the NCAA Tournament. Q: For the third straight year you finished ranked in the Top 20 and having an RPI in the Top 10. Can the program maintain that achievement level this year? A: We are always competing against the best to be the best and we want to challenge ourselves to be a better team every time we play. Our program has reached a level of respect and recognition that we will no longer be underestimated when we face our opponents and it will require us to elevate our level of play this season. Q: What are your needs for the future of Georgia Tech volleyball? A: We are actively recruiting a setter and some athletic middles and outside hitters. We have big shoes to fill, but we know that prospects around the country are taking note of our style of play and enthusiasm on the court. Q: Your staff has been together since you started as the head coach at Georgia Tech. How do they contribute to the program s success? A: Ben and Sally are indespensible and have worked extremely hard to elevate our program to where it is. They are a great combination who bring leadership, experience, understanding, skill and energy to every task we face. I know that the most successful programs are ones who have been together the longest and our staff intends to stay together for a very long time. Q: Can you define your kind of player? A: We are a close team at Georgia Tech and I think that it is important that we continue to recruit athletes who can become part of our family but also add new dimensions to it. Every coach tries to recruit great volleyball players. But, there are so many more things that make up a player than just statistics. I like players who are verbal on the court and aggressive in practices as well as games and who are unselfish. In addition, our philosophy at Georgia Tech is built on the foundation of student-athletes, and our recruits must be students first and athletes second. Q: Georgia Tech volleyball was ranked as high as No. 12 last season and finished in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. Can those same results be achieved this year? A: We believe that we will be good at the beginning of the season but the most exciting part for us as a staff is that we believe we will be great by the end of the season. We fully intend to work hard throughout the season and expect to be right back in the hunt again this season. 11

THE ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE Consistency. It s the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 53rd year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate teams in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 94 national championships, including 49 in women s competition and 45 in men s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 119 times in men s competition and 61 times in women s action. The ACC has had six AVCA All-Americans, including Georgia Tech s Kele Eveland, who in 2003 became the league s first palyer to earn first-team accolades. In addition, in 2004 Georgia Tech s Lynnette Moster became the ACC s only three-time recipient of All-America honors In Review The academic year concluded with the league pocketing three more national team titles and seven individual NCAA crowns. In all, the ACC has won 51 national team titles ACC Champions Men s Champions Football... Virginia Tech Cross Country... NC State Soccer...Virginia Indoor Track & Field... Florida State Wrestling... A total of 181 student-athletes from the ACC earned first, second, or third-team all-america honors this past year. The Championships The conference will conduct championship competition in 25 sports in , including 12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the first year. The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in Women s sports were initiated in 1977 with the first championship being held in tennis at Wake Forest University. Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, volleyball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing. A History The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C. with seven charter members Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws. The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven schools met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name officially became the Atlantic Coast Conference. Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline. Duke s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $ to pay for conference expenses. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted Virginia. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971 when South Carolina tendered its resignation. The conference operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when Georgia Tech was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964.The ACC expanded to nine members on ACC MEMBERS BOSTON COLLEGE: Charter member of the Big East Conference in 1979; joined the ACC in July, 2005 CLEMSON Charter member of the SIAA in 1894, charter member of the SC in 1921, charter member of the ACC in DUKE Joined the SC in December, 1928; charter member of the ACC in FLORIDA STATE Charter member of the Dixie Conference in 1948, joined the Metro Conference in July, 1976; joined the ACC September 15, GEORGIA TECH Charter member of the SIAA in 1894, charter member of the SC in 1921, charter member of the SEC in 1932, joined the ACC in July, MARYLAND Charter member of the SC in 1921, charter member of the ACC in MIAMI-Charter member of the Big East Football Conference in 1991; joined the ACC in July, NORTH CAROLINA Charter member of the SIAA in 1894, charter member of the SC in 1921, charter member of the ACC in NC STATE Charter member of the SC in 1921, charter member of the ACC in VIRGINIA Charter member of the SIAA in 1894, charter member of the SC in 1921, resigned from SC in December 1936, joined the ACC in December, VIRGINIA TECH-Charter member of the Southern Conference in 1921; withdrew from the Southern Conference in June, 1965; became a charter member of the Big East Football Conference on Feb. 5, 1991; joined the ACC in July, WAKE FOREST Joined the SC in February, 1936, charter member of the ACC in July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State.
