4 Tusco Classifieds For Sale Stoeger Uplander Coach Gun in 20 Gauge Pics: Description: I have for sale a very nice lightly shot Stoeger Uplander Coach Gun in 20 Gauge. Barrels marked "Stoeger Inc. -- Accokeek Maryland" and "Uplander 20 Gauge 3" Chamber" Choke tubes -- I do not know what chokes they are. No dents or dings. One bluing rub about 6" down from the muzzle on the right barrel. Receiver marked "Stoeger Uplander", E. R. Amantino", and "Made in Brazil". Safety has not been disabled. Wood is in excellent condition with pressed checkering and a recoil pad. Forend is in excellent shape with one 4 inch scratch near the center, on the left hand side of the release lever. The scratch is in the checkering. Action job by a local smith to smooth up for cowboy action shooting. Used for 1/2 a cowboy shooting season, then I started shooting hammer shotguns. My wife & kids are not interested in shooting it, so it is up for sale. A really nice 20 gauge for CAS, home protection, or? No box Price: $300 face-to-face Prairie Dawg AKA Lou Polsinelli LPOLSI@yahoo.com For Sale Navy Arms Gregorelli & Uberti 1851 Cased Set Pics: From the estate of a long-time friend and gun collector, I have for sale a very early Italian reproduction of a Colt 1851 with accessories, in a nice display box. Revolver: 7.5" barrel 36 caliber Steel frame Marks: Right side of barrel -- "Made in Italy" and in script "G.U." Top of barrel -- "Navy Arms Co." Left side & bottom of barrel -- no markings Serial Number 1346 No date code stamp The hammer face is not slotted, but flat with a nipple indentation on it. Here is the information I have been able to find out: The G.U. stands for Gregorelli & Uberti They were the first manufacturers of replicas for Navy Arms Uberti didn't have a manufacturer s license for the first few years. The G.U. marking was used from about 1959 to about 1964 when Uberti took over Serial number 1346 is consistent with a 1959 or 1960 date of manufacture Details: Condition is very good. This gun was shot some, but my friend Tom was an avid black powder shooter, so he cleaned & oiled the gun before putting it away. Bluing is good with some fading and holster wear. Barrel has a few bumps and a nick or two on the edges, but nothing major. Bore & cylinder charge hole are in nice shape. Case coloring on the frame and loading lever is faded but still there Grips show use but look good. Light cylinder ring. Flask: Raised Civil War cannon & flags scene. Marked "Colts Patent". 1 1/2 " spout (I don't know how many grains it throws). Spring is in good shape. Leather thong. I can't say if this is an original Colt flask. Tom had many original Colts and Winchesters -- he collected them for years. If it is a reproduction, it is a very early reproduction flask. Only the very first ones had Colt on them as Colt filed a law suit to put a stop to using their name. Brass round ball/bullet mold: I can't say if this is original or not, but it is the correct size for this gun. It has no markings Hicks Central Fire cap tin -- brass A handful of round balls Very nice display case in very good condition. Looks like walnut, but it may not be Tom had this cased set sitting in his gun room for many many years. I should say that Tom did not purchase this as a set, but put it together from pieces he had on hand many years ago. Price: $500 for the set. $300 for the revolver only. Face-to-face. Send me an if you have any questions. Prairie Dawg AKA Lou Polsinelli LPOLSI@yahoo.com P a g e
5 Prairie Dawg's Little-Known Western Facts Barbed Wire & The West Barbed wire, also known as barb wire, is a type of steel fencing wire constructed with sharp edges or points arranged at intervals along the strand(s). It is used to construct inexpensive fences surrounding secured property. A person or animal trying to pass through or over barbed wire will suffer discomfort and possibly injury. Barbed wire fencing requires only fence posts, wire, and fixing devices such as staples. It is simple to construct and quick to erect. The first patent in the United States for barbed wire was issued in 1867 to Lucien B. Smith of Kent, Ohio, who is regarded as the inventor. More patents followed, and in 1867 alone there were six patents issued for barbed wire. Only two of them addressed livestock deterrence, one of which was from Lucien Smith. Barbed wire was the first wire technology capable of restraining cattle. Before 1870, westward movement in the USA was largely across the plains with little or no settlement occurring. After the Civil War the plains were extensively settled. Wire fences were cheaper and easier to erect than their alternatives. When wire fences became widely available in the United States in the late 19th century, they made it affordable to fence much larger areas than before. Ranchers moved out on the plains, and needed to fence their land in against encroaching farmers and other ranchers. The railroads throughout the growing West needed to keep livestock off their tracks, and farmers needed to keep stray cattle from trampling their crops. In the late 1870s, barbed wire was being promoted in the lucrative markets of Texas. At first, Texans were hesitant, as they feared that cattle might be harmed, or that the North was somehow trying to make profits from the South.. There was also conflict between the farmers who wanted fencing and the ranchers who were losing the open range. Barbed wire played an important role in the protection of range rights in the Western U.S. Although some ranchers put notices in newspapers claiming land areas, and joined stockgrowers associations to help enforce their claims, livestock continued to cross range boundaries. Fences of smooth wire did not hold stock well, and 5 P a g e
6 hedges were difficult to grow and maintain. Barbed wire's introduction in the West in the 1870s dramatically reduced the cost of enclosing land. Barbed wire also emerged as a major source of conflict with the so-called Big Die Up incident in the 1880s. This conflict occurred because of the instinctual migrations of cattle away from the blizzard conditions of the Northern Plains to the warmer and plentiful Southern Plains, but by the early 1880s this area was already divided and claimed by ranchers. The ranchers in place, especially in the Texas Panhandle, knew that their holdings could not support the grazing of additional cattle, so the only alternative was to block the migrations with barb wire fencing. Many of the herds were decimated in the winter of 1885, with some losing as many as three-quarters of all animals when they could not find a way around the fence. Later other smaller scale cattlemen, especially in central Texas, opposed the closing of the open range, and began cutting fences to allow cattle to pass through to find grazing land. In this transition zone between the agricultural regions to the south and the rangeland to the north, conflict erupted, with vigilantes joining the scene causing chaos and even death. The fence cutters war came to an end with the passage of a Texas law in 1884 that stated among other provisions that fence cutting was a felony; and other states followed, although conflicts still occurred through the opening years of the 20th century. Barbed wire is often cited by historians as the invention that truly tamed the West. Herding large numbers of cattle on open terrain required significant manpower just to catch strays, but with an inexpensive method to divide, sub-divide and allocate parcels of land to control the movement of cattle, the need for a vast labor force became unnecessary. By the beginning of the 20th century the need for significant numbers of cowboys was not necessary, and the West was changed forever. Rest in Peace Shotgun Slade On February 15 th, 2015 our longtime friend Shotgun Slade aka Dennis Wood passed away. He was camping in Florida with his wife when he had a massive heart attack. Shotgun Slade was always a joy to have at the range. His energy and enthusiasm were very contagious. It was a treat to see him dance his jig or to watch him shoot from the hip shooting Outlaw. Our Tusco Family has been dealt a heavy blow with his passing. Slade was a great man and great Cowboy. Rest in peace friend. May God Bless you and your family. 6 P a g e
