Clemson has won each of the last five games, including the last time the two teams met in Boston in 2014, and last year at Clemson. Boston College s last win was in 2010 in Boston by a count. The Tigers have won seven of the eight games played since Dabo Swinney became Clemson head coach on an interim basis on October 13, Clemson won in Chestnut Hill in 2008 and 25-7 at Clemson in The 2008 win in Boston was Swinney s first career win as a head coach. Clemson s only loss in the Swinney era as head coach came in 2010 in Boston. The series dates to the 1939 season and the January 1, 1940 Cotton Bowl. That was a landmark victory for the Clemson program, the school s first bowl game and the school s first win over a Top 20 team. Boston College was ranked 11 th in the nation entering the game. Clemson won 6-3 behind 115 yards rushing from Charlie Timmons and four pass deflections in the fourth quarter by Clemson legend Banks McFadden. Six of the 11 meetings between the two teams since Boston College joined the ACC in 2005 have been decided by a touchdown or less. The Tigers hold a 7-4 advantage in the series since Boston College joined the ACC for the 2005 season. BC won each of the first three, all by seven points or less and two were in overtime. Two of Clemson s victories in the series took place during undefeated Tiger seasons. Clemson won in 1948 on the way to a perfect 11-0 season, and won in 1950 on the way to a season. Clemson also won last year during its perfect regular season, in Clemson behind 420 yards passing by Deshaun Watson. In 1983, at Chestnut Hill, the Eagles gained a win behind Doug Flutie. Clemson had a 16-3 lead with 25 minutes left in the game, but the Eagles went on a 28-0 run to end the contest behind Flutie. The 1984 Heisman winner, was for 223 yards and two touchdowns against a Clemson defense that featured All-American William Perry. The Eagles gained 504 yards of total offense on the night, 281 rushing and 223 passing. It was Clemson s only loss in 1983 (9-1-1). The two teams tied in a 1982 game in Death Valley. The game was televised by CBS on a regional basis, the first CBS broadcast from Clemson s Memorial Stadium. Clemson had a 14-0 lead at intermission, but sophomore quarterback Doug Flutie led Boston College back to take a lead. The Tigers tied the game in the fourth quarter, on a field goal by Donald Igwebuike, who played soccer and football for the Tigers that fall. He then had another attempt from 43 yards with eight seconds left, but the kick missed and the game ended in a tie. *Clemson had just two losses and two ties over a three-year period from One of the losses and one of the ties came against Boston College in that period. The 2005 game at Clemson was an overtime meeting, a Boston College victory, It was the first between the two schools as an ACC matchup. The game was tied at the end of regulation. The two teams played a double overtime affair in 2006, a Boston College victory. A missed extra point in overtime proved costly for the Tigers. In 2009 when Clemson won it was the Tigers first win over the Eagles at Clemson since Clemson won that 1958 game, The two teams played three games at famed Fenway Park in Boston, the home of the Boston Red Sox. Clemson won the first meeting there in 1941 (just 13 days after Ted Williams finished his.406 season for the Red Sox) by a score. The same two teams met at Fenway the following year, and Boston College won, The two teams played to a tie in 1953 at Fenway. So the series stands at in games played at Fenway Park. *The two teams also played at Braves Field in Boston, then the home of the National League s Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves). Clemson had a 3-1 advantage in games played at Braves Field all between Clemson has a lead in the series in games played in Boston or Chestnut Hill. O Rourke-McFadden Trophy to the Winner For the ninth time, Clemson and Boston College will play for a trophy. The Boston College Gridiron Club began sponsoring the O Rourke-McFadden Trophy in Clemson has won seven of the eight years the trophy has been awarded. The trophy features a leather helmet replica of those used by Charlie O Rourke of Boston College and Banks McFadden of Clemson, when they competed against each other in the 1940 Cotton Bowl in Dallas, TX. In addition to the trophy presentation, the Boston College Gridiron Club will present a replica leather helmet to the MVP of the winning school. C.J. Spiller won the award for the 2008 game when he had 242 all-purpose yards, and Clemson kicker Richard Jackson won the award for the 2009 game. He kicked six field goals in the Clemson victory, the only kicker at the FBS level to kick six field goals in a game in Montell Harris won the award for Boston College in 2010 thanks to his 143 yards rushing and he scored the game s only offensive touchdown. Chandler Catanzaro became the second Clemson kicker to win the honor with his five field goals in the Clemson win in Tajh Boyd won it in 2012 with a 367-yard passing game and Vic Beasley took the honor in 2013 when he had a fumble return for a touchdown. Cole Stoudt had 308 yards of total offense in Clemson s 2014 win. Watson won it last year thanks to his 420 yard passing performance. The Boston College Gridiron Club developed the idea in order to honor the tradition at both schools and to honor the legacy of Charlie O Rourke and Banks McFadden, who played during the leather helmet era. Clemson and Boston College are both in the Atlantic Division of the ACC and will play every year. O Rourke led Boston College from the quarterback position to a record in his three years as the quarterback of the Eagles between One of those three losses was to McFadden and Clemson in the 1940 Cotton Bowl. O Rourke had his jersey retired at Boston College and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in McFadden led the Tigers to a FOOTBALL NOTES

The Tigers gained 532 yards on 78 plays against a Boston College team that finished the year No. 1 in the nation in total defense. Clemson had 112 yards rushing, but 420 yards passing, all by quarterback Deshaun Watson. Clemson held Boston College to 11 first downs and 246 yards of total offense. Artavis Scott had a career game with 10 receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown to lead the receivers. Deon Cain caught just two passes, but had 97 yards on those receptions. Watson completed passes for 420 yards and three scores. Scott, Jordan Leggett and Zak Brooks caught the touchdown passes from Watson. Boston College actually scored first on a five-yard scoring pass. The Tigers then countered with 17 straight points. Clemson led by just at intermission, then won the third period 10-0 before both teams had a touchdown in final period. Clemson had lead before Boston College scored a touchdown with 1:29 left. Last Game at Boston College For the second game in a row, the Clemson defense needed to make one final stop to give the Tigers a win. And for the second straight time the defense came through. Clemson had made a goal line stand to beat Louisville the previous week. C.J. Davidson scored from 32 yards out with 9:35 remaining in the game and Clemson s relentless defense held, giving the Tigers a win at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill. Boston College quarterback Tyler Murphy did plenty of scrambling in the second half and had his team in Tiger territory late in the fourth quarter. But the Clemson defense forced four straight incompletions and the Tigers preserved the victory and the O Rourke-McFadden Trophy. Clemson held the Eagles to just 120 yards rushing, no small feat because BC entered the game in the top five in the nation in rushing. Cole Stoudt was the recipient of the Leather Helmet Award as he completed passes for 285 yards and added 23 yards rushing for a 308 yard game in total offense. He directed the Tigers to 398 yards total offense and 22 first downs. The Tigers were on third down. Deshaun Watson had been injured the previous week against Louisville. Wayne Gallman scored the first touchdown as he ran in from 17 yards. Mike Williams added eight catches for 128 yards to lead all receivers FOOTBALL NOTES 3

4 CLEMSON at Boston College Dabo Swinney s First Win was in Chestnut Hill Clemson 27, Boston College 21 At Chestnut Hill, Nov. 1, 2008 C.J. Spiller totaled 242 all-purpose yards and Clemson scored the game s final 10 points to defeat Boston College at Alumni Stadium on November 1, It was Clemson s first win over the Eagles since 1958, snapping its six-game winless streak, and the first win for Dabo Swinney as Clemson s interim head coach. Behind 240 yards in the first half, Clemson jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead. But Boston College took advantage of several Tiger miscues and scored 21 straight points to take the lead in the fourth quarter. But Spiller s 64-yard kickoff return set up the Tigers go-ahead score and the Clemson defense thwarted Boston College to preserve Clemson s first victory over the Eagles since they joined the ACC. Clemson outgained the Eagles and was led by the allaround performance of Spiller. The junior running back had eight carries for 55 yards and six catches for 105 yards. He also added a 64-yard kickoff return and 18-yard punt return. Spiller was named game MVP and was ACC Offensive Back-ofthe-Week. Thomas Austin was also named ACC Offensive Lineman-of-the- Week. James Davis totaled 52 yards on 13 carries and a score, his 42nd career rushing touchdown. It broke the school record that was previously held by Travis Zachery ( ). Aaron Kelly also hauled in his 19th career touchdown catch, breaking the previous Tiger record held by Glenn Smith ( ). Cullen Harper, who rushed for a touchdown, was for 252 yards and one touchdown against three interceptions. His favorite target was Jacoby Ford, who had a game-high seven catches for 72 yards. The Eagles were limited to just 116 passing yards on 39 attempts, less than three yards per attempt. They had two offensive touchdowns, which came on drives of seven and 21 yards. Only two of their 15 offensive drives traveled more than 25 yards, and both ended in missed field goals. The Tiger defense limited the Eagles to just 2-17 on third down and allowed one offensive play of 20 yards or more, which was a 23-yard pass play. The Tigers did not register a sack, but they were a big reason Chris Crane was just for 116 yards due to consistent pressure in the backfield. Clemson s First Friday Night Game since 1956 This will be Clemson s first regular season game on a Friday since November 16, 1956 when Clemson lost a Friday evening game at Miami (FL), The last time Clemson won a Friday regular season game was in 1952 when the Tigers won a Halloween Friday night game in Boston over Boston College, That game was played in Braves Field in Boston. Clemson has played more games on Fridays in the regular season over its history than one would think. This will actually be the 43 rd regular season game in Clemson football history played on a Friday. The Tigers are in Friday regular season games. Some of Clemson s best bowl wins in history have come on Fridays. At the top of the list was the Jan. 1, 1982 Orange Bowl win over Nebraska, That win gave Clemson its only National Championship. The December 29, 1978 win over Woody Hayes and Ohio State was on a Friday, as was a victory over defending National Champion Penn State in the Jan. 1, 1988 Florida Citrus Bowl. Clemson last played a game on Friday on January 3, 2014 when the Tigers defeated sixth-ranked Ohio State in the Orange Bowl, Watson and Boulware Both Win National Honors Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and linebacker Ben Boulware were both honored as national players of the week for their respective performances against Louisville. The Tigers defeated the third-ranked Cardinals Saturday night in Memorial Stadium. It tied for the highest ranked team Clemson has beaten. Watson was named the National Offensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Foundation and Boulware was named National Defensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Watson completed passes for 306 yards and five touchdown passes. He also rushed 14 times for 91 yards. Watson became the second FBS player in the last four years to throw for at least 300 yards and five touchdown passes and rush for at least 90 yards against a top 10 team. The only other quarterback to do it was former Tiger Tajh Boyd against Ohio State in the 2014 Orange Bowl. Watson led Clemson on a fourth quarter comeback. The Tigers trailed in the fourth period before he connected on a 20-yard scoring pass to Mike Williams with 7:05 left, then hit Jordan Leggett with a 31-yard scoring pass with 3:14 remaining. Boulware had a career high 18 tackles, three tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a pass deflection against a Louisville offense that came into the game leading the nation in scoring and total offense. Both players will be back in action on Friday night when the Tigers play at Boston College. Three Tigers Named ACC Player of the Week Deshaun Watson, Ben Boulware and Jay Guillermo were all named ACC Player of the Week for their respective positions in the win over Louisville. Watson threw for 306 and five touchdowns, Boulware had 18 tackles, including three tackles for loss, and Guillermo had a 91 percent blocking grade in playing every offensive snap. Leggett Sets Record in Grand Style Clemson tight end Jordan Leggett became the school s career leader in touchdowns by a tight end when he caught the game winning 31- yard scoring pass from Deshaun Watson against Louisville with just 3:14 left in the game. That was a quite a way to set the record as Louisville was ranked No.3 in the nation entering the contest. It was the second straight game Leggett has caught a touchdown pass, giving him the Clemson career record by one over current Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen ( ), Brandon Ford ( ) and former Pittsburgh Steeler Super Bowl Champion John McMakin ( ). Leggett tied the Clemson tight end touchdown record last year with eight. In that 2015 season he had at least one touchdown catch in five straight games, another Clemson record for a tight end. Leggett currently has 74 career catches for 972 yards and 13 scores. He needs 20 catches to break McMakin s record for receptions by a tight end and 284 yards to break McMakin s yardage record for a tight end. Clemson Team Streaks Clemson has won 19 in a row at home, the longest active home winning streak in the nation. Here is a list of the top streaks in that category: Clemson 19, Air Force 15, Navy 12, Houston 11, North Carolina 9, Alabama 8, San Diego State 7, Tennessee 7. Clemson has won 11 straight conference games, the second longest active streak in the nation. Here is a list of the top streaks in the nation in that category: Western Kentucky 13, Clemson 11, San Diego State 11, Alabama 10, Arkansas State 9, Oklahoma 8. (Streak includes conference championship games). Clemson has won seven in a row on the road, the fourth longest active streak in the nation. Here is a list of those top streaks nationally: Ohio State 19, Alabama 8, Oklahoma 8, Clemson 7, North Carolina 7. Clemson s Seven-Game Road Winning Streak Clemson has won seven in a road on the opponent s home field. That is tied for the second longest streak of its kind in Clemson history. The record is eight in a row set between the 1978 and 1979 seasons. So a win at Boston College on Friday will tie the Clemson record for consecutive road wins. Clemson lost its last road game of 2014 at Georgia Tech, then went 5-0 last year on the opponent s home field, wins at Louisville, Miami, NC State, Syracuse and South Carolina. Clemson has added to it this year with wins at Auburn and Georgia Tech. Clemson had not won at Auburn since 1951 and had not won at Georgia Tech since If Clemson can win at Boston College the Tigers will go for the school record at Florida State, where Clemson has not won since 2006 and has just one win since Clemson s Longest True Road Game Win Streaks Years Games Ended by at South Carolina, Current at Tulane, at Rice, at South Carolina, at Pacific, at North Carolina, FOOTBALL NOTES

5 CLEMSON at Boston College Bounce Back One of the statistics that is recorded on the PGA Tour is Bounce Back. That takes place when a player makes a bogey or higher, then makes a birdie or eagle on the next hole. In football we could call a Bounce Back, a score for a team after the opponent has just scored a touchdown or a field goal. Clemson has been good at Bounce Back over the last two years. In the last 20 games, 19 victories, when Clemson has been scored on the Tigers come back with a score about 50 percent of the time. Last year there were 47 opponent scores (35 touchdowns and 12 field goals) when Clemson had an opportunity and desire to score on the next drive. (We didn t count Clemson ensuing possessions when the Tigers wanted to just run out the clock to end a half and weren t trying to score.) In the ensuing possessions after those 47 scores, Clemson replied with a score 25 times, 16 touchdowns and nine field goals. In the ACC Championship game and two College Football Playoff games Clemson had eight bounce back scores after 14 opponent scores. So far this year, opponents have 13 scores and Clemson has come back with its own score six times, four touchdowns and two field goals. Clemson had two bounce back touchdowns in the win over Louisville. Great Birthday for Gallman Wayne Gallman celebrated his birthday on October 1, 2016 with a 110-yard rushing game on just 16 carries, an average of 6.9 yards per rush. He scored on a 24-yard touchdown. Gallman, who turned 22 that day, had his second 100-yard game of the year. He had 123 yards in the season opener against Auburn. The 110-yard game against Louisville was the 14 th 100-yard game of his Clemson career. Gallman is now tied for second in Clemson history in career 100-yard rushing games with James Davis and needs just one to tie Raymond Priester s record of 15 set between Clemson Career Leaders in 100-yard Rushing Games Rk Name Years Games 1. Spiller Andre Ellington Buddy Gore Kenny Flowers Woodrow Dantzer Terry Allen High Ratings The Clemson vs. Louisville game of October 1, 2016 drew an overnight rating of 6.0 according to a release by ABC/ESPN the day following the game. The game also had a streaming average minute audience of 200,000. That was the highest overnight rating for an ABC Saturday night college football game this year and the most streamed game through week five of the season. The 6.0 rating was the second best of the college season on any night, trailing only the 7.0 rating for the Notre Dame at Texas game on the opening Sunday night of the season. The Clemson vs. Louisville game had the highest overnight rating for ABC Saturday night football since the 2014 ACC Championship game between Florida State and Georgia Tech. The overnight rating for the Clemson vs. Louisville game in the Louisville market was 24.9 and the rating in Greenville was Clemson Not Allowing Big Plays While Clemson had many top 15 national rankings on defense last year, one area Dabo Swinney wanted to improve on was allowing big plays. So far that area has been a plus for the Tigers. Even after playing the nation s top team in making big plays, Louisville, Clemson has allowed just five plays of 30 yards or more all year, fifth best in the nation. That includes just two pass plays of 30 yards or more, third best in the nation. Last year Clemson was 79 th nationally in allowing plays of 30 yards or more with 20. Additionally, Clemson has allowed just 15 total plays of 20 yards or more this year, 16 th best in the nation. Clemson has many top 20 rankings in various categories so far this year: Clemson Defense Rankings Defensive Category Ranking Figure Scoring Defense 13 th 16.0 Passing yards Allowed 14 th Passing Efficiency 4 th Yards/ Pass Attempt 3 rd 5.1 TD Passes Allowed 7 th 3 Interceptions 8 th 8 Completion & 17 th.513 Total Defense 12 th Yards/Play allowed 5 th 4.06 Sacks/Game 10 th 3.5 Tackles for Loss/Game 4 th 9.6 TFL Yards 5 th 202 Turnovers Forced 6 th 12 3 rd Down Defense 8 th.247 Fewest 30 yard plays 5 th 5 Fewest 30 yard pass plays 3 rd 2 Clemson Passing Outstanding vs. Boston College Clemson has won five in a row against Boston College and the key has been passing. Clemson has averaged 345 yards and 65.4 percent completion against the Eagles over the five-game winning streak. Tajh Boyd, Cole Stoudt and Deshaun Watson have combined to completed 136 of 208 passes for 1,726 yards and eight touchdowns over the five games. Clemson has also averaged 155 yards on the ground for the five contests and scored nine touchdowns. Clemson has averaged yards of total offense and had 24 first downs per game, leading to an average score of over the last five years. Clemson Passing vs. Boston College Last Five Years Year Passing Total Offense Score Total Cain Has Break out Game Clemson sophomore receiver Deon Cain had a breakout game against Louisville with four receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns. He had just six catches for 72 yards in the first four games and no touchdowns. But with the bright lights on for a prime time Saturday night, he came through with touchdown receptions of 33 and 37 yards in the second quarter. He now has 10 catches for 170 yards and two scores this year. Last year as a true freshman, Cain made some freshman All-American teams when he had 34 receptions for 582 yards and five scores. The 17.1 average per catch was best on the Clemson team. Towards the end of the season he broke Sammy Watkins Clemson record for consecutive games with a touchdown reception by a freshman when he had a TD in five straight games. Cain s 98 receiving yards against Louisville were a career high. He is suffering from a 100-yard jinx it appears as the Louisville game was his fourth at Clemson in which he had between 96 and 98 receiving yards, but he is yet to have a 100 yard game. Balanced Attack Means Victory Clemson had 201 yards rushing and 306 yards passing for 507 total in the win over Louisville. Clemson did all that in 62 plays so the Tigers averaged 8.18 yards per play, best for the Tigers against an FBS opponent since an 8.22 average against Georgia Tech in That kind of balance means victory for the Tigers. Over the history of Clemson football, the Tigers are now when gaining at least 200 yards rushing and 200 yards passing in the same game. The Louisville game was the second time Clemson has done it this year after the Tigers did it a season record eight times in The only blemish on the record was a tie at Georgia Tech in Johnson 10 th in Interceptions Clemson safety Jadar Johnson had his third interception of the season and seventh of his career in the win over Louisville. In his first year as a starter, Johnson had four interceptions for 100 return yards in his first three years. So far this year in five games he has three interceptions for FOOTBALL NOTES 5

6 CLEMSON at Boston College yards. He is ranked 10 th in the nation in interceptions. Johnson also has four passes broken up, giving him seven passes defensed to rank 23 rd in the nation on a per game basis. In many ways, Johnson is the B.J. Goodson of this year s defense. Goodson was a backup at linebacker for three years, then led the Tigers in tackles as a senior. He is now with the New York Giants. Johnson was a backup to Jayron Kearse, now with the Minnesota Vikings, for three years. Now he is coming into his own as a senior. He has 20 tackles in addition to his pass defense numbers, to rank eight on the team Boulware Has His Best Game Linebacker Ben Boulware had the best game of his career against Louisville. The senior from Anderson, SC led the team in tackles with 17, including three tackles for loss. He added his first fumble recovery of the year and had a pass broken up. Boulware played 101 snaps in the game against the nation s top offense. For the year Boulware has 40 tackles, including three tackles for los, a sack, a pass broken up and an interception. He has done that despite missing the South Carolina State game, so he averages 10 tackles per game. Watson by the Numbers Deshaun Watson had his eighth 300-yard passing game and his 14 th 300-yard total offense game in the win over Louisville. The native of Gainesville, Georgia had 306 yards passing and another 91 rushing for 397 yards of total offense. He also threw five scoring passes. He joined former Tiger Tajh Boyd as the only FBS quarterbacks in the last four years to have at least 300 yards passing, 90 yards and rushing five touchdown passes against a top 10 team. Boyd did it against Ohio State in the 2014 Orange Bowl. The Louisville game marked the third time in his career Watson had at least 300 yards passing and five touchdown passes in the same game. Watson is still far behind Boyd in both categories. Boyd had yard passing games and yard total offense games. Clemson Starts 5-0 Clemson has started 5-0 for the fourth time in the last six years under Head Coach Dabo Swinney. The Tigers started 8-0 in 2011, 6-0 in 2013 and 14-0 last year. It is the fourth start of at least 5-0 since Swinney became head coach on a full time basis for the 2009 season. Clemson had just three starts of 5-0 or better in the 53 seasons before he took over. The Tigers are allowing just 13.7 yards per kickoff return and that leads the nation. Greg Huegel has handled the kickoffs this year and has 16 touchbacks in 30 kickoffs. That is a 53.3 touchback percentage. Last year, Huegel had just 10 touchbacks in 37 kickoffs, 27 percent. Huegel has continued to do well in terms kicking field goals this year. He has made 7-9 field goals and extra points for 40 total points, an average of eight points per game, best on the team. Clemson averaged 25 yards per kickoff return this year after averaging 21.6 yards per return last year. Clemson has averaged 14.5 yards per punt return this year after averaging 2.3 yards per return last year. Clemson kickers have had touchbacks on 50 percent of their kickoffs this year. Only 34 percent of kickoffs went for touchbacks last year. Ray-Ray McCloud has 168 punt return yards this year, nearly three times as many as Clemson had all of last year (63). Tigers Averaging 35 Points and 463 Yards Clemson has averaged 35 points and 463 yards per game through five games this year. If the season ended today, this would be just the fourth Clemson team to average at least 35 points and 450 yards per game over the course of the season. It was just the eighth time in history Clemson committed five turnovers, yet won the contest. It was the first time in 31 years it had happened. Clemson had five lost fumbles against Virginia Tech in 1985, yet beat the Hokies, on a field goal by David Treadwell on the last play of the game. The most turnovers by Clemson in a win is eight, in 1963 against Wake Forest. Incredible as it may seem, Clemson won that game The Tigers seemed to either score a touchdown or turn the ball over in that game and Wake Forest never could score after a Clemson miscue. That might be a national record. Wake Forest had just 148 yards of offense in that game. Below is a list of the games Clemson committed at least five turnovers yet lost the game. With all the wins Clemson has had recently that seems strange. It has not been any fault of Deshaun Watson and the Clemson offense. Clemson quite simply has not trailed much in the fourth period since that win at BC two years ago. In the 26 games since that come back win over Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Clemson has lost just two games, at Georgia Tech in 2014 and the National Championship game against Alabama. In those 26 games, Clemson only trailed in the fourth quarter in the two games the Tigers lost. And, the Georgia Tech game, Watson was hurt and out of the game, so he only had the opportunity for a fourth quarter comeback one time prior to the Louisville game and that was against Alabama. Clemson trailed in the fourth period with under eight minutes left against Louisville, then took the Tigers on a 14-0 run to win The lead touchdown was the result of an 85-yard drive that culminated with a 31-yard scoring pass to Jordan Leggett. Clemson Special Teams Improved in Many Areas Clemson has allowed just 13.7 yards per kickoff return this year. Last year opponents averaged 24.8 yards per kickoff return. Clemson s 28-Point Quarter vs. Louisville Clemson had a 28-point second quarter thanks to the passing of Deshaun Watson, who was yards and three scores. It marked FOOTBALL NOTES

Wilkins Touchdown a First Clemson sophomore defensive lineman Christian Wilkins is rapidly getting a reputation as one of the most all-around football players in the nation. Wilkins burst on the national scene in the Orange Bowl last year when he caught a 31-yard pass from punter Andy Teasdall on a fake punt against Oklahoma. That was a momentum changer for the Tigers in their victory. Then, in the 2016 season opener against Auburn, he threw a key block in Clemson s goal line offense to allow Wayne Gallman to score a key touchdown in the Tigers six-point win. Gallman was quoted as saying, That was the easiest thing I have done at Clemson. Wilkins brought his offensive exploits to a new level against Troy last week when he caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson on a third-and-goal play to give the Tigers a lead. With the reception, Wilkins became the irst defensive lineman in Clemson history to score a touchdown on an offensive play. Wilkins has certainly been doing his job on the defensive line as well. He has 27 tackles over the irst ive games, including a team best 6.5 tackles for loss. Clemson Linebackers Productive The Clemson defense has had a lot of irsts under coordinator Brent Venables. The Tigers have led the nation in total tackles for loss each of the last three years. Clemson is the irst school to do that nationally. Clemson is 10th in the nation in tackles for loss so far this year with 48 in ive games. In the win over Troy, three different Clemson linebackers had interceptions, the irst time that has happened since two-platoon football began in According to Whitey Jordan, an assistant coach on the 1964 staff, Clemson two-way players Ted Bunton, Jay Cooper and Pat Crain played linebacker when they were on defense that year. All three of those players had interceptions in Clemson s 29-7 win over Virginia in Kendall Joseph, Jalen Williams and Dorian O Daniel all had thefts in their pass coverage in the irst half of Clemson s win over Troy. It was the irst career interception for all three. To put into perspective how rare it is for linebackers to get interceptions, Clemson players at that position had just four all of last year, two by Ben Boulware and two by B. J. Goodson. Over the last nine years, the 2015 team is the only squad to have at least three linebacker interceptions for the course of a season. This is the irst time since 2002 that three different linebackers have had interceptions in a season. That year Eric Sampson, Kelvin Morris and Altroy Bodrick all had one pick apiece. A linebacker has had an interception just 17 times in Dabo Swinney s head coaching career and now seven of them have taken place over the last two years. Williams established a Clemson record for receiving yards in a season opener with his 174. The previous high mark in an opener was 152 by Airese Currie in Williams now has 25 catches for 373 yards to lead the Tigers. He went over the 100 mark in career receptions in the win over Louisville when he had ive receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown. He now has 104 catches in his career for 1746 yards. Here are some notes on that victory: First win to open the season on the road against a team currently in the SEC since The last time Clemson accomplished that feat was a 29-0 win at Georgia. John Heisman was the Clemson coach. Clemson was 1-8 all-time in openers on the road against teams currently in the SEC. First win at Auburn since 1950 when the Tigers defeated Auburn 41-0 behind the running of all-time great Fred Cone, who had 163 rushing yards in the game. Clemson had a 100-yard rusher and a 100-yard receiver in the contest. Wayne Gallman had 30 carries, second highest in his career, for 123 yards. It was his 13 th career 100-yard game. He needs just two more to tie the Clemson record of 15 set by Raymond Priester between Clemson held Auburn to 13 points and one touchdown in the Tigers victory at Auburn to open the 2016 season. It was the fewest points Clemson has allowed against an SEC team since the 2009 when the Tigers defeated Kentucky It was the fewest points Clemson has given up to an SEC team on the road since a 13-9 Clemson win at South Carolina in Years of Howard s Rock The Clemson football program will celebrate 50 years of Howard s Rock at Memorial Stadium this year. Howard s Rock was irst put on a pedestal at the top of the hill at the east end of the stadium for the Virginia game of Clemson won that game thanks to a great second half comeback. The Tigers did not start the tradition of rubbing Howard s Rock before they ran down the hill until the Wake Forest game of 1967, the season opener. With the tradition something that took place over two seasons, the celebration of Howard s Rock will be a year long celebration in Against Troy, members of the S.C. Jones family and the family of Gene Willimon, were honored. Jones brought the rock from Death Valley, California and gave it to Frank Howard, who in turn gave it to Gene Willimon, the former executive secretary of IPTAY. It was Willimon s idea to mount it on the pedestal at the East Endzone of the stadium. Wilkins and Lawrence Join the Jumbo Package Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence were quite a tag team on the Clemson defensive front line in the win over Auburn. They were a big reason Clemson held Auburn to 87 rushing yards, a program that averaged 196 rushing yards per game in 2015 and led the nation in Lawrence inished with 10 tackles according to the Clemson coaches grading of the ilm, second behind Kendall Joseph s 14. Wilkins added seven. They had sacks on consecutive plays in the second period, and Wilkins ended the game with 2.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a pass delection at the line of scrimmage. Additionally, they both played in Clemson s Jumbo Package when the Tiger offense got close to the goal line. Both players had successful blocks on Wayne Gallman s one yard touchdown run on fourth down in the second period. Both players are also blocking backs in Clemson s punt formation. Joseph Has Career Best Night Kendall Joseph was Clemson s top tackler off stats from the Clemson coaches grading in the season opener at Auburn. The red-shirt sophomore from nearby Belton, S.C. made his irst college start and had 14 tackles, including three tackles for loss and a sack. As a freshman in 2015, Joseph had just 11 tackles all year in 63 plays over seven games. He is a former three-time state champion in the state of South Carolina in weight lifting. Joseph was named ACC Linebacker of the Week for his performance against Auburn, his irst career start. He was also named Clemson s top defensive player by the coaching staff in the win over Troy. Joseph is Clemson s top tackler this year with 43, including six tackles for loss. Tigers Continue to Make Tackles for Loss at Alarming Rate Clemson had 14 tackles for loss in the season opening win over Auburn, tied for the fourth most over the irst weekend of college football. It was a balanced performance in that area as nine different players were involved in the stops behind the line of scrimmage. Kendall Joseph led the way with three, the irst three of his career in fact. Christian Wilkins had 2.5 and Cordrea Tankersley had two. Clemson had seven tackles for loss at Georgia Tech and added 10 more against Auburn. Since Brent Venables has been at Clemson the Tigers have done very well in this category. In fact, each of the last three years, the Tigers have led the nation in total tackles for loss. Clemson had 123 in 2013, 131 in 2014 and 126 last year. The Tigers were 28 th in the category in 2012, Venables irst year, with 87. In his 59 games as Clemson defensive coordinator, Venables defense has had 515 tackles for loss, an average of 8.8 per game, best in the nation over that time. Those 515 tackles for loss have been for 2122 yards, or 1.21 miles of real estate. The 500th tackle for loss was a sack by Carlos Watkins against Georgia Tech. Additionally, Clemson has recorded at least one sack in each of the last 35 games, second longest active streak in the nation. Clemson had ive sacks against Louisville. The Cards had allowed just four in the irst four games of the season. Clemson has 18 sacks for the year. Clemson Career Leaders Clemson has an active player in the top 10 in school history in the major categories of passing offense, total offense, rushing yardage and receiving yardage. Wayne Gallman is currently ninth in school history in rushing yards. He moved into the top 10 against Troy. Gallman is also coming up on the school record for 100-yard games. It is a grid with four quadrants that take into account a team s performance on and off the ield. Some of the off the ield considerations are the school s APR ranking, graduation rate, NCAA probation history and player arrests. The goal of college football programs is to be in the upper right quadrant of the grid at the intersection of Powerhouse on the ield and Admirable reputation off the ield. This year 14 programs were in the upper right quadrant, including Clemson, who was the team furthest to the right, which meant it was the top program on the ield among the programs who are considered to have admirable qualities off the ield. This marks the third consecutive time the WSJ did the grid that Clemson has been listed in the upper right quadrant. Clemson, Stanford, Washington, Michigan State, Florida, Michigan, Iowa, Boise State and UCLA are the nine schools who have been in the upper right quadrant each of the last three times the WSJ has done the grid. Dabo and Kathleen Swinney Pledge $1M to IPTAY Dabo and Kathleen Swinney recently pledged $1 million to IPTAY in support of Clemson football to provide future funding for programmatic and building initiatives that will continue to propel the program forward. It is not the irst time that the Swinneys have chosen to support programs at Clemson. In addition to past gifts of more than $340,000 from the All In Foundation in support of Call Me MISTER, ClemsonLIFE, Clemson s Bio-Engineering Department (for breast cancer research), Clemson Community Engagement Department (breast cancer program), Clemson s Education Department (Reading Recovery and Early Literacy), Clemson s Outdoor Lab (new dock project) the Swinneys have personally donated more than $265,000 of their private funds to needbased scholarships, Golf Paws, the Clemson chapel project, IPTAY s annual fund, and the completion of the WestZone I love Clemson, and I believe in our program, and I feel like Clemson has been pulling for me since that irst game in 2008, Swinney said. But no matter how much we win on the ield, my passion is building and empowering successful young men through the game of football. Kathleen and I are blessed. And we have always known we need to use those blessings to do good for others. It s so important to us that we give back to this program that has been so good to us. Over the years, the Swinneys have left no doubt about their dedication to helping others. One of their largest and most visible avenues is through the All In Foundation. Founded in January 2009, the foundation has four major focuses: breast cancer research, the Family Effect, Call Me MISTER and the ClemsonLIFE Program. Their efforts through the foundation alone have resulted in gifts of over $2 million to these causes. Two focus areas, ClemsonLIFE and Call Me MISTER, offer young people the opportunity to improve their lives and the lives of others through the power of education. Involvement with special-needs young people began as a tribute to the touching life of John Mark Stallings, the special-needs son of Gene Stallings, the coach who deeply impacted the Swinneys during their time at the University of Alabama. The ClemsonLIFE program has helped hundreds of young people learn to live independently as self-suficient adults. Call Me MISTER, a program begun at Clemson and now spread to 20 colleges and universities, is an initiative that increases the pool of available teachers from a broader more diverse background particularly among the state s lowest performing elementary schools. The program has created a group of educational leaders who serve as mentors and role models to the communities they serve. It is hard to ind programs that are closer to my heart than ClemsonLIFE and Call Me MISTER, Clemson President Jim Clements said. The Swinneys generously gave to an endowment established in the name of my daughter, Grace, that offers grants to students who need inancial assistance to be a part of ClemsonLIFE. And, anyone who has seen Call Me MISTER in action has witnessed the incredible impact of this program in building leaders across the country. These men are changing lives every day not just in the classroom, but in their families and the community. It s great to have a head football coach who continuously shows his commitment to Clemson University through these tremendous programs and others, and is an advocate for and supporter of the entire community. Changing lives is the overarching theme of Swinney philanthropy. And much of that vision stems from their own personal experiences. The Family Effect works to reduce alcohol and drug addiction as a leading cause of family collapse and harm to children. The Swinney family has felt the impact, understands the risk and knows the need for intervening healing in these homes. There s no doubt that times were tough for my family when I was younger. But what I try to do with those experiences is turn them into empathy. I do understand. I do know how these people feel. And as long as we have the inancial resources to try to make a difference, we will, Swinney said. The Swinneys have also experienced irst-hand the toll that breast cancer can take on an entire family. Kathleen s older sister died of breast cancer, and Kathleen discovered that she and her younger sister carry the BRCA gene mutation, making the risk of the disease very close to her. That passion has led to support of early detection as well as the breakthrough research being done on the Clemson campus by Dr. Brian Booth of the Institute for Biological Interfaces of Engineering. As Kathleen says, I really dream of a day when no one suffers 2015 FOOTBALL NOTES 17

18 CLEMSON at Boston College from this disease. That s why I am so passionate about the work of the foundation. I want to help ind the cure and meanwhile make things just a little easier for the families who are in the battle with this disease. While Kathleen and Dabo Swinney have a long history of generosity, they would never call their missions accomplished. Dabo sounds like the passionate coach he is when he talks about getting behind these Clemson programs: You know; Clemson is a great school. But we can t rest on that. We ve got so much more to do. We have to always strive to get better and that s why we ve got a new strategic plan at the University called ClemsonForward. That says it all. Just like playing offense in football: It s all about the forward progress. No progress. No win. We can t stop now. Renfrow to Miss at Least Four Weeks Clemson starting wide receiver Hunter Renfrow will miss a few weeks, according to Head Coach Dabo Swinney. Renfrow suffered a broken hand in the Tigers win over Troy on Saturday while making a 35-yard touchdown reception. Preliminary reports on Saturday indicated it was not a serious injury. We thought Hunter was going to be fine, but the MRI on Monday showed a little crack below his thumb, said Swinney on his Monday night radio show, Tiger Calls. He could play with it, but the injury would make it more difficult to hold on to the ball when he tried to tuck it away. He will have surgery to repair it and miss a few weeks. We hope to have him back for the NC State game, but certainly by the Florida State game after the open date. Renfrow was one of Clemson s top players in the school s run to the National Championship game last year. He had 33 receptions for 492 yards and five touchdowns in The original walk-on had seven receptions for 88 yards and two scores against Alabama. He has caught at least one touchdown pass in each of the last four games. He has four receptions for 62 yards and two scores in two games so far this year. Ray Ray McCloud is expected to move into the starting lineup with Renfrow s injury. Renfrow also served as the backup punter. The backup punter will now be Carson King, a red-shirt freshman walkon from Nashville, Tenn. 30 AUBURN, ALA. - Clemson opened the 2016 season Saturday with a win over Auburn in front of a sellout Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers batted down a Hail Mary pass attempt on the final play of the game to move to 1-0 on the season. Deshaun Watson passed for 248 yards and a touchdown, while wide receiver Mike Williams signaled his return with a career night. He caught nine passes for 174 yards to lead the playmakers. Defensively, Clemson came up with three takeaways and held Auburn to just 262 yards. A scoreless first quarter saw the Tigers put together a pair of drives that resulted in points in the second. After three big completions to Williams who returned from a neck injury suffered in last year s opener Wayne Gallman plunged in from a yard out behind two defensive tackles lined up in the backfield. With just seven seconds left before the half, Greg Huegel tacked on a 30-yard field goal to put Clemson up Auburn pulled to within a touchdown at 13-6 heading into the fourth quarter, but Hunter Renfrow provided the play of the night. Facing third-and-goal, Watson lofted a beautiful pass from the 16 to Renfrow, who made a spectacular catch in the corner of the endzone. It was his third straight game with a touchdown reception. 31 GAME 2 TROY 24 #2 CLEMSON 30 SEPT. 10, 2016 MEMORIAL STADIUM CLEMSON, S.C. CLEMSON, S.C. - The No. 2 Clemson Tigers defeated Troy at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The victory extended the Tigers home winning streak to 17 games. The Tigers (2-0) were led by quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was passing for 292 yards and three touchdowns, as he moved ahead of Woodrow Dantzler for third place on Clemson s all-time passing yards list. The first quarter featured little scoring, as both teams struggled to develop any type of offensive rhythm. Favorable field position following a punt allowed the Trojans (1-1) to convert a short drive into the game s first score, a 39-yard field goal by Ryan Kay. On the ensuing possession, the Tigers reciprocated with a 26-yard field goal by Greg Huegel. The second quarter was a far different story. Watson took advantage of a Troy turnover by throwing a 35-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Renfrow, marking the sophomore s fourth straight game with a touchdown reception. Interceptions played a key role in the second quarter, with Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers throwing three to Clemson linebackers. Interestingly enough, these were the first career interceptions for all three (Jalen Williams, Kendall Joseph, Dorian O Daniel). Williams interception, which was the byproduct of a tipped pass at the line, bailed out the Tigers, who had just turned the ball over in their own territory. Despite several electrifying offensive and defensive plays, including a 66-yard touchdown run by Troy running back Jabir Frye that tied the score Late in the quarter, Clemson s Ray-Ray McCloud dropped a sure punt return for a touchdown on the one yard line, and after a lengthy video review, Troy took over on a touchback. After Kay missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt in the final seconds, the Tigers took a advantage into halftime. McCloud, who had seven catches for 86 yards in the game, had three receptions on a key third-quarter drive en route to a goal-line situation. Defensive lineman Christian Wilkins then made the second-most important reception of his college career later in the drive in the fourth quarter, a one-yard touchdown grab, the first of his career, that gave the Tigers a lead. Clemson scored to take a lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game when Watson found Deon Cain in the endzone for a 23-yard touchdown. After a Huegel field goal with 2:25 remaining, Troy drove 68 yards and scored to cut the deficit to 30-24, as Silvers connected with Deondre Douglas for a one-yard touchdown pass with 44 seconds remaining. The Tigers recovered the ensuing onside kick and held on for the victory. 32 GAME 3 SC STATE 0 #3 CLEMSON 59 SEPT. 17, 2016 MEMORIAL STADIUM CLEMSON, S.C. Fueled by a 31-point first quarter, No. 3 Clemson routed SC State 59-0 on Sept. 17, 2016 in Memorial Stadium. That opening frame was the highest scoring first quarter in school history. With the win, the Tigers improved to 3-0 on the year. Today was a great day, said head coach Dabo Swinney. It s hard to play 92 guys and still get the shutout...i don t care who you re playing. I m so proud of our guys. They played a clean game for four quarters today. This was great for our team, for our spirit and our morale. It was great to get out there today and go play. On the offensive side of the ball, the Tigers were led by Deshaun Watson, who was passing for 152 yards and three touchdowns, and Ray-Ray McCloud, who totaled 60 yards and two touchdowns on four receptions. Clemson finished with 555 yards offensively, and 92 Tigers saw playing time. The Tigers started scoring with 11:33 left in the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Watson to McCloud, and they did not look back from there. Later in the quarter, the Bulldogs fumbled a Tiger kickoff in the endzone and Denzel Johnson pounced on the ball for his first career touchdown, upping the lead to 21-0 with 5:20 remaining in the first quarter. Nick Schuessler then added to the scoring with his first career touchdown pass, a 45-yard connection with freshman Diondre Overton. A 26-yard field goal from Greg Huegel rounded out the first quarter, giving the Tigers a 31-0 lead. Second-quarter action picked up with a second touchdown pass from Watson to McCloud, marking McCloud s first career game with multiple scores. One more touchdown from Watson to Deon Cain later, and the Tiger took a 45-0 lead into halftime. Clemson s 45 first-half points were the most scored in a first half since the Tigers matchup with Ball State in 2012, when Clemson also scored 45 points. With the third and fourth quarters shortened to 12 minutes each, the Tigers kept rolling. Bringing the Clemson point total over 50 was Tavien Feaster, who scored his first career touchdown midway through the third quarter. Trevion Thompson also hauled in his first career touchdown in the third quarter on a seven-yard strike from Kelly Bryant. 33 GAME 4 #3 CLEMSON 26 GEORGIA TECH 7 SEPT. 22, 2016 BOBBY DODD STADIUM ATLANTA, GA. ATLANTA Clemson snapped a five-game road losing streak in the series against Georgia Tech in a nationally televised Thursday night contest, as the Tiger defense was once again dominant against the Yellow Jackets triple option attack in a 26-7 victory at Bobby Dodd Stadium. With the win, No. 3 Clemson moved to 4-0 on the season, 1-0 in the ACC. Tech fell to 3-1 overall, 0-1 in league play. Brent Venables stingy unit allowed only 22 yards of total offense in the opening half and 124 for the game. Offensively, the Tigers were efficient in the opening half behind the passing of Deshaun Watson, who was for a season-high 304 yards and two touchdowns. Clemson wasted no time in announcing its presence, as the Tigers put together a perfect 75-yard drive that ended with Mike Williams first receiving touchdown of the season, a four-yarder from Watson. He marched Clemson into scoring position on its next two drives as well, the second of which ended with a Wayne Gallman one-yard plunge for a touchdown and a 14-0 score after a quarter. The Tigers put together a great scoring chance late in the second quarter, but Watson was intercepted after a miscommunication with his receiver. Georgia Tech returned the ball two yards, but fumbled into the endzone and the play resulted in a safety for the Tigers. Following the free kick, Clemson took advantage by getting in Tech s redzone again. Watson threw a laser for a touchdown to Jordan Leggett, his first score of the 2016 season. The Tigers dominance was on display in the opening half. Clemson ran 56 total plays, compared to just 21 for Tech. The Yellow Jackets were stuffed for only 22 total yards, most of which came on the final play before halftime. Clemson owned a 325-yard advantage as well in the first 30 minutes of play. The Jackets finally reached the scoring column in the fourth quarter, but Clemson answered with a career-long tying 47-yard field goal from Greg Huegel to close out the game s scoring. 34 GAME 5 #3 LOUISVILLE 36 #3 CLEMSON 42 OCT. 1, 2016 MEMORIAL STADIUM CLEMSON, S.C. CLEMSON, S.C. - Marcus Edmond tackled James Quick one yard shy of a first down at the three-yard line on fourth down with 33 seconds left in the game, as No. 3 Clemson held on for a thrilling win over No. 3 Louisville at Memorial Stadium on Oct. 1, Led by quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was passing for 306 yards and five touchdowns, the Tigers (5-0, 2-0 ACC) came out on top of the back-and-forth matchup featuring electrifying offensive displays from both teams. Clemson also upped its home winning streak to 19, the longest active streak in the nation. It was a great win, said head coach Dabo Swinney. Louisville played their hearts out. We stuck it out in the third quarter. We had the right plays. Defense was the story of the first quarter, as both teams struggled to manufacture any substantial drives. Clemson s pass rush was particularly effective and pressured Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson throughout. The Cardinals (4-1, 2-1 ACC) were the first to score, as Jeremy Smith capped an 82-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the second quarter. The remainder of the quarter was practically all Clemson, however, with the Tigers outscoring the Cardinals Deon Cain made a big splash during that stretch, hauling in two touchdown receptions that covered 70 yards altogether. connected to put the Tigers up Cain finished with four catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns. The Cardinals added a field goal with under a minute to play in the half, but the Tigers were able to answer with a frenetic scoring drive in just 26 seconds. Advancing 73 yards in four plays, Clemson increased its lead to on a five-yard touchdown pass from Watson to Artavis Scott. Louisville outscored Clemson 16-0 in the third quarter, capitalizing on two Tiger turnovers. Following a Watson interception, Jackson connected with James Quick for an eight-yard touchdown. A Louisville field goal on its next possession pulled it to within nine points. After a Clemson fumble in Louisville territory, Jackson drove the Cardinals 77 yards and finished the drive off with a one-yard touchdown rush. The Cardinals pushed their run to 26-0 by scoring the first 10 points of the fourth quarter by way of a field goal and an 11-yard Jackson scamper into the endzone. In the wake of the score by Jackson, Scott provided the Tigers with excellent field position via a 77-yard kickoff return, then Watson found Mike Williams for a 20-yard touchdown pass.
