IAAF World Junior Championships, July 2010, Moncton CAN UK Athletics Selection Policy (January 2010) Overview UKA recognise the importance of this Championship as a major step in the development of senior international athletes. Aspiring athletes should see this as a key target and a measure of where they stand against international opposition. The UKA qualifying standards are set to reflect competitive performances at a World final (top eight) level. Automatic selection, in the same discipline, will be given to the first eligible athlete past the post in the relevant Trials event (1) provided that they achieve a UKA qualification from 1 st April 2010 up to and including the relevant Trials (for the 5000m, 10000m and 10000m walk events the qualification period will start from 1 st April 2009). (1) The Trial events are: Women s 5,000m: the U20 women s 5000m Trial incorporated into the BMC GP 1 A race at Sports City, Manchester on 29 May Men s 10,000m: the U20 men s 10000m Trial incorporated in the Aviva European Trials and UK Championships, on the weekend of 25/26/27 June 2010 All other events: the Aviva England U20 Trials and U23 Championships on the weekend of 19/20 June Endurance events Women s 5000m The U20 women s 5000m World Junior Trial will be incorporated into the Women s `A race at the BMC GP 1, Sports City, Manchester on 29 th May, The U20 Trial entries will be limited to six places in the A race and will be prioritised on a performance basis if interest exceeds the permitted six entries. The entry standard for U20 s wishing to compete in this Trial is sub 17:00.00 minutes for 5000m. Performances inside 9:30.00 for 3000m will be considered as well as other noticeable performances throughout the winter season. Those U20 athletes wishing to compete in the 5000m Trial should Spencer Barden sbarden@uka.org.uk no later than 30 th April but must also enter the race via the British Milers Club. See - Men s 10000m The World Junior Trial will be incorporated within the Senior Men s Aviva European Trials and UK Championships on the weekend of 26/27 June This event will be by invitation only. Any junior men interested in competing should contact Spencer Barden on: sbarden@uka.org.uk NB athletes will not be selected to compete in more than one long endurance event. (For example; women s 3000m or 3000m s/c and 5000m or men s 5000m or 3000m s/c and 10000m). Junior Men and Women s 10000m walks The Trial for this event will be held as a mixed race at the Aviva England U20 Trials and U23 Championships on the weekend of 19/20 June The race will have a split start with men and women starting on separate start lines. The first U20 male and female athletes to finish will gain automatic selection provided that they achieve a UKA qualification from 1 st April 2009 up to and including the relevant Trials. The full list of UKA designated qualification meetings for the Walking Events is available from Spencer Barden as above. The team will be picked in two selection waves, the first wave on Tuesday 22 nd June 2010; the final selection will be made on Monday 5 th July 2010.
Requirements Athletes must be eligible to compete for GB and NI to be considered for selection. Athletes seeking selection for the World Junior Championships must compete at the relevant Trials unless a prior medical reason has been disclosed to the Team Leader, Kevin Tyler, ktyler@uka.org.uk. Athletes must be born in 1991, 1992, 1993 or 1994 i.e. be 16 to 19 years old in the year of competition. The selection process is detailed in the Selection Process section below. The qualification standards are listed in the UKA Standards section below. Other rules and regulations regarding the eligibility and standards are listed in the UKA Conditions section. Selection Process The UKA qualification period is from 1 st April 2010 to midnight (BST) on 4 th July 2010, (for the 5000m, 10000m and 10000m walk the qualification period will start from 1 st April 2009). In the notes below a current standard means a performance achieved during the 2010 outdoor season, specifically between 1 st April 2010, and midnight (BST) on 4 th July 2010 or in the case of the 5000m, 10000m and 10000m walk between 1 st April 2009, and midnight (BST) on 4 th July The first wave of selections will be made on Tuesday 22 nd June 2010; the rest of the team will be picked on Monday 5 th July Round 1 automatic selections The first eligible athlete past the post in the relevant Trials (1) will be selected, in the same discipline, provided that they hold a current UKA qualification standard before the Trials or achieve a UKA standard at the Trials. Athletes will only be automatically selected for the discipline that they compete in at the Trials. Note that there will not be a trial event for the Combined Events therefore these athletes cannot be automatically selected. Round 2 other athletes: The selection panel may select from the following groups of athletes. For the combined events and 10000m walk athletes who have: - Achieved at least one UKA qualification standard during the selection period, or - Previously finished in the top 8 at the World Junior Championships For all other events one further athlete (two if the winner of the Trials has not achieved the UKA qualification standard) can be considered for selection on the basis of; Achieving a UKA qualification standard within the qualification period. Position at the Trials Consistency of performance at or around the UKA qualification in higher level competitions. Head to head performances at higher level competitions. There is no automatic right of selection for athletes in Round 2. The selectors will prioritise athletes that they believe can realistically finish in the top 8 in Moncton. In coming to this decision selectors will consider the factors above.
Round 3 Relays: The selection panel will add athletes to relay squads (which can be up to six athletes) where it considers that the squad will be capable of at least a top eight place in Moncton. Relay squad members do not need to hold individual qualification standards. Round 4 Team Leader discretion: The Team Leader, at his sole discretion may add one or more exceptional athletes to the team if they marginally miss the UKA standards but they meet the IAAF qualification standards and have clear potential (in the Team Leader s opinion), to finish in the top 8 at the World Junior Championships. Note that the Team Leader cannot replace one of the athletes selected in one of the previous rounds. Some U18 athletes may consider themselves able to compete in the World U20 Championships, the Youth Olympic Games and the EA European Championships; however UKA will not consider athletes for all of these events. Under 18 athletes will only be eligible to compete at one major championship in 2010, either the Youth Olympic Games (taking place in Singapore, August), the IAAF World Junior Championships or the EA European Championships (taking place in Barcelona, Spain 27 July - 1 August). However if an athlete competes at the European Youth Olympic Trials (EYOT), but does not qualify for the Youth Olympic Games, they will still be eligible for selection for the World Junior Championships or the European Championships. Key point for athletes who qualify for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) through the European Youth Olympic Trials, Moscow, RUS May 2010). The qualification place at the YOG is allocated to the athlete and not to the country; it cannot be transferred to another athlete within a team. Athletes should note that if they qualify at the EYOT they will be required to compete at the Youth Olympic Games. Athletes will not be able to withdraw from the Youth Olympic Games to make themselves eligible for selection for the World Juniors or European Championships. UKA strongly recommend that eligible athletes prioritise the U18 event if they fall into that age group. U18 athletes who wish to prioritise the World U20s instead should make a request on the attached form to the Team Leader (Kevin Tyler, ktyler@uka.org.uk) as soon as possible and before the relevant Trials at the latest. U20 athletes will have the option of competing at one major championship this year; either the World Junior Championships or the EA European Championships. UKA will not select an U20 athlete for both events and will select athletes to compete in their age-group championship unless they have informed the Team Leader otherwise. U20 athletes who wish to prioritise the European Championships should make a request on the attached form to the Team Leader (Kevin Tyler, ktyler@uka.org.uk) as soon as possible and before the relevant Trials at the latest.
UKA Qualification Standards The UKA standards for the 2010 World Junior Championships in Moncton are shown below. For conditions on how these standards will be used and what counts as eligible mark see the Selection Process and UKA Conditions sections. Men Event Women m m m : m 2: : m 4: m 9: : m 16: : m 8: k SC 10: (.995m) 110/100mH mH H/Jump PV L/Jump T/Jump /17.00 Shot Put /52.50 Discus /62.40 Hammer Javelin /7000 Dec/Hept : m Walk 46: x100m & 4 x 400m Relay
UKA Conditions All entries must conform to the IAAF entry rules and conditions for this event see ( UKA may enter up to 2 athletes per event in accordance with its selection criteria. All performances must be achieved between the 1 st April 2010 and midnight BST on 4 th July 2010 inclusive(apart from the 5000m, 10000m and 10000m walk, the qualification period for which will start on from 1 st April 2009). The selectors may, in exceptional circumstances, consider performances set indoors as long as they are achieved between 1 st January 2010 and midnight BST on 4 th July 2010 inclusive, but they will normally give outdoor performances a higher priority. Hand timed performances in 100m, 200m, 400m, 100m/110m hurdles and 400m hurdles shall not be accepted. Performances must be achieved in bona fide competition organised in conformity with IAAF rules. Performances achieved in mixed events (between male and female participants) held completely in the stadium, may be accepted under specific circumstances the conditions (see IAAF rule 147). Wind assisted performances in the relevant individual events and combined events will not be accepted (the conditions set in IAAF Rules (d) and will be applied). Athletes must be eligible to compete for GB & NI to be considered for selection. Only athletes aged from 16 to 19 years of age on 31st December 2010 can participate. (Year of birth 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994). Some useful information for consideration by athletes and coaches The 2010 summer competition year is relatively short with 4 weeks separating the Loughborough International weekend and the Aviva World Junior trials. Therefore careful planning of your competition plan will be vital to gain selection and then to go on and be successful at the Championships. You should consider a mixture of qualification opportunities and competitive experiences. Experience shows that athletes achieving consistent performances above the qualification marks go on to compete successfully at the championship. UKA wishes to keep athletes and coaches continually up to date with information regarding the World Junior Championships. Relevant information will held on the UKA website and all athletes and coaches to athletes on the long list will be sent log-in details and a password to enable them to access this site. Personal coaches who intend to travel to the championship are encouraged to start talking immediately with the Team Manager (Lorna Dwyer ldwyer@uka.org.uk) IAAF web site: LOC web site: Team Leader: Kevin Tyler ktyler@uka.org.uk
