The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been an autonomous member of the University of Alabama system since 1969, and has had an intercollegiate athletic program since UAB is sometimes confused with the University of Alabama (Crimson Tide), which is located in Tuscaloosa; while this is inevitable, it is important to note that the two are indeed separate institutions. In addition, the UAB name is often altered by various media, opponents, merchandisers, etc. UAB GAME WEEK SCHEDULE MEDIA SERVICES Sunday: The team generally has meetings and a short workout in the late afternoon/early evening. 3 HEAD COACH NEIL CALLAWAY Neil Callaway, who has been a part of successful football programs throughout his playing and coaching careers, was named the head coach at UAB on December 17, Callaway, who most recently had been the offensive coordinator at the University of Georgia for the previous six seasons, became the third head coach in the history of the UAB football program. He is now in his fourth season after inheriting a program low on numbers and experience. The Blazers have improved on their record in each of Callaway s first three seasons in Birmingham. There are few coaches who have been a part of more championship teams than Callaway. Counting his years as a player and coach, Callaway has been a part of 10 Southeastern Conference championships, an accomplishment that includes three as a player at Alabama, four as an assistant coach at Auburn under head coach Pat Dye, one as an assistant at Alabama, and most recently, two at Georgia as offensive coordinator. During his six years at UGA, he was part of a staff that helped lead Georgia to 61 victories, two SEC championships, three SEC Eastern Division titles, four bowl victories, and four top 10 finishes in the final national polls. In 2002, the Bulldogs finished as the SEC s top scoring (32.14 ppg) and pass efficiency (138.91) offense and the Dogs were second in scoring offense in In addition, Callaway helped develop numerous outstanding offensive linemen for the Bulldogs. While under Callaway s tutelage, six different Georgia O-linemen earned All-Southeastern Conference honors on 10 occasions. One of them Max Jean-Gilles received All-America accolades in Callaway, a native of Macon, Ga., and a graduate of the University of Alabama, served as offensive line coach at Alabama in 1997 and line coach and offensive coordinator from 1998 to Prior to joining the Crimson Tide, he served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Houston ( ). He was the long-time offensive line coach under head coach Pat Dye at Auburn ( ). Callaway also served on Dye s staff at Wyoming (1980) and at East Carolina ( ). He was inducted into the Macon (Ga.) Sports Hall of Fame in During Callaway s tenure at Auburn, the Tigers won or shared four SEC championships and he produced four first-team All-Americans and 14 All-SEC players. In his four seasons coaching at Houston, the Cougars offensive line allowed just 19.5 sacks per season including only 10 sacks in his final year. Houston won the inaugural Conference USA championship while he was there. Callaway and his wife, Karen, have three children: Russ, Kate, and Clay. NOTING THE BLAZERS n UAB registered its largest comeback in school history Sept. 18 with its come-from-behind victory over Troy. The Blazers overcame a 23-0 first half deficit and trailed in the fourth quarter. Coming back to win after trailing by 23 points represented UAB s largest comeback in school history. n Four of UAB s 11 contests this season have been decided on the final play of the game. n WR Frantrell Forrest is now No. 2 on the UAB career list for receptions (164) and is third in receiving yards (2,215) and receiving touchdowns (20). He moved ahead of former Blazer All-American Roddy White (163 from ) in catches with his five-reception performance vs. Marshall on Nov. 6. n QB Bryan Ellis has passed for 2,692 yards and 22 touchdowns this season. Those are especially impressive considering he did not play in the opener vs. FAU, saw limited action in game two at SMU and didn t enter game three vs. Troy until midway through the second quarter. He was named Conference USA Offensive Player-of-the-Week in back-to-back weeks following his 360-yards/3 TD pass performance vs. Troy (Sept. 18) and his 373 yards/1 TD pass effort vs. Tennessee on Sept. 25. Ellis has passed for 779 yards and eight touchdowns in the past two games vs. East Carolina and Memphis. n QB David Isabelle ran for 214 yards in the opener vs. FAU, a C-USA record for a quarterback. That number broke the mark of 194 set last year by former UAB QB Joe Webb. It also is the second-highest single-game total in UAB history by any player. n QB Bryan Ellis came off the bench vs. Troy Sept. 18 to lead the Blazer comeback. In just over two and a half quarters of action against the Trojans, Ellis threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns. He engineered a 99-yard drive in the final 1:09 with the Blazers having no timeouts remaining. n UAB has registered 500 or more offensive yards in five of the past nine games (Troy - 535, Tennessee - 544, UTEP - 500, East Carolina and Memphis - 510) after hitting that mark only four times in the entire 2009 season. n Senior TE Jeffery Anderson was named to the John Mackey Award Watch List for the second consecutive year. n Senior WR Mike Jones has seven TD receptions this season to tie for No. 6 on UAB s all-time list for receiving scores in a season. Jones has 36 receptions for 492 yards. n UAB s 345 yards rushing in the Sept. 2 opener against Florida Atlantic was the Blazers sixth-most in school history and also was the No. 6 total registered nationally in the first weekend of the 2010 season. n RB Pat Shed s 176 rushing yards Oct. 30 at Southern Miss tied for the 7th-most yards in a game in UAB history. Shed s total was the most by a Blazer RB since the 2005 season (Corey White, 200 yards vs. Memphis). n UAB was held to less than 100 rushing yards vs. Marshall, the first time that has occurred this season. ALL-TIME SERIES WITH RICE UAB and Rice will be meeting for the fourth time when the teams kick off in Houston on Saturday. The Blazers lead the series by a 2-1 margin after the victory in the 2009 season opener. Thus far, the home team has prevailed in each of the three previous matchups. UAB won the first meeting (45-26 in 2005) in Birmingham. UAB vs. Rice UAB leads, UAB won at Birmingham Rice won at Houston UAB won at Birmingham 20TH SEASON OF FOOTBALL, 15TH AT I-A LEVEL UAB has a young football program compared to most of its opposition. The Blazers went through their first intercollegiate football season in 1991 as a member of NCAA Division III. The Blazers moved to Division I-AA two seasons later in 1993 and remained at that level three years before making the transition to Division I-A beginning in BLAZERS HAVE IMPROVED WIN TOTAL EACH OF PAST TWO YEARS Taking over a program low on numbers, head coach Neil Callaway knew when he became the head coach in December, 2006 that he faced a major rebuilding job. The process continues, but there has definitely been progress made. In 2007, Callaway s first at the helm of the Blazers, UAB had 63 scholarship players, far short of the allowable 85. A year later, that number rose to 68. Last year, the Blazers scholarship count was 73. With the start of the 2010 season, the scholarship number has climbed to near maximum. Along with the scholarship numbers improving, so has the team s record. In 2007, UAB finished 2-10 followed by a 4-8 mark in Then last year, the Blazers were 5-7.

4 DOWN TO THE WIRE Of UAB s eight contests it has played thus far this season, four of them have been decided on the final play of the game. Two of the four have resulted in wins (Troy and Southern Miss) and two have been losses (Florida Atlantic and Tennessee). Here is a quick look at each of the four UAB nail-biters and the final play that determined the outcome: Opponent Score Deciding Play FLORIDA ATLANTIC L, The 28-yard FG attempt by UAB s Josh Zahn was blocked with no time (Sept. 2) remaining as the Owls prevailed by one point. Game Highlights - UAB led 14-0 after one quarter and held a advantage early in the third quarter before FAU rallied to trim the margin to with 2:28 to play in the third quarter. Zahn made it a Blazer lead with 7:28 to go with a 34-yard FG. After an FAU punt was downed at the UAB 1-yard line with 4:11 left, the Blazers punted out of their endzone with the Owls taking possession at the Blazers 38. RB Alfred Morris scored on the first play from scrimmage on a 38-yard run to give Florida Atlantic its first lead of the game with 2:20 to play. After the kickoff, UAB drove to the FAU 5, aided by a 50-yard run by QB David Isabelle. After two rushing plays, Zahn s potential winning FG was blocked. TROY W, UAB QB Bryan Ellis connected with freshman WR Jackie Williams for a 44- (Sept. 18) yard Hail Mary pass with no time remaining on the clock to lift UAB to the victory. Game Highlights - UAB stormed back from a 23-0 second quarter deficit to record the largest comeback win in Blazers history. Ellis came off the bench and threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns in the game while Williams scored three touchdowns, two on receptions from Ellis (36 and 44 yards). UAB s game-winning drive was 99-yards, covered in nine plays and accomplished in only 1:09 with no timeouts. TENNESSEE L, (2 OT) Tennessee QB Matt Simms connected with Denarius Moore for a 25-yard (Sept. 25) touchdown in the game s second overtime to give the Volunteers a win at Neyland Stadium. Game Highlights - For the second straight week, UAB rallied with a huge comeback. Down 23-7 at halftime (same halftime score as a week earlier vs. Troy), the Blazers dominated play in the second half, outgaining the Vols by a yards margin. UAB outscored UT, 16-0, in the second half. QB Bryan Ellis, making his first career start, had another huge day as he passed for 373 yards and one touchdown. PK Josh Zahn missed five field goals in the game but was successful on both of his tries in the respective overtime periods. SOUTHERN MISS W, (2 OT) Bryan Ellis hit TE Jeffery Anderson for a two-point pass play to give UAB a (Oct. 30) dramatic double OT victory over Southern Miss at Roberts Stadium. Game Highlights - In a game that was tight from start to finish, UAB claimed the win in double overtime on Ellis pass to Anderson after head coach Neil Callaway made the decision to go for two. RB Pat Shed had scored on a 13-yard run to set up the game-winning conversion. Shed finished the game with 176 rushing yards and pair of touchdowns. WR Mike Jones had his best game as a Blazer as he had eight receptions for 86 yards and three touchdowns. The Blazers had a lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Golden Eagles scored two touchdowns in the final 5:32. SCHOOL RECORDS FALL IN GAME AT TENNESSEE Several UAB school records were broken in the Blazers double-overtime loss at Tennessee on Sept. 25. s The 92 plays run by UAB eclipsed the previous mark of 90 set vs. Hawai i in the 2004 Sheraton Hawai i Bowl s QB Bryan Ellis attempted 55 passes in the game to break the school mark of 54 set by Darrell Hackney in 2004, also against Hawai i in the bowl game s 60 pass attempts as a team vs. the Vols shattered the single-game mark of 58 set vs. Prairie View A&M in 1994 BLAZERS WITH BACK-TO-BACK 500-YARD GAMES Only once before in school history had UAB rolled up more than 500 yards of offense in consecutive games before achieving that feat against Troy and Tennessee earlier this season. The Blazers had 535 yards in the win against the Trojans on Sept. 18 before coming back the next week to register 544 yards in the game versus the Volunteers in Knoxville. Ironically, the only other time the Blazers have had 500-plus yards in back-to-back games was in the final two contests of the 2009 season when they totaled 520 against East Carolina and 527 in the season finale vs. UCF. UAB has averaged 430 yards this season and in the past eight games, the Blazers have averaged 449 yards. The Blazers rolled up 464 yards against Southern Miss three weeks ago and had 223 rushing yards against a USM defense that had come into the game ranked No. 3 in the country in rushing defense (having allowed only 83 yards per game on the ground). A Quick Look At Rice 4 Rice is coming off its best offensive effort since the 2007 season. The Owls ran up 639 yards and 62 points in Saturday s win over East Carolina. 4 Rice has averaged 55.5 points in its last two contests. 4 Like UAB s Pat Shed, Owls RB Sam McGuffie has been a versatile rusher and receiver out of the backfield. McGuffie now has 827 rushing yards and 370 receiving, very similar to Shed s 813 on the ground and 377 receiving. 4 Rice punter Kyle Martens was recently named as one of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award. Martens leads Conference USA and is second in the NCAA in average at 46.8 yards per kick. ELLIS FIRST BLAZER TO EARN BACK-TO- BACK C-USA PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS SINCE 2000 SEASON UAB quarterback Bryan Ellis picked up his second consecutive Conference USA Offensive Player-of-the-Week honor on Sept. 27, two days after he passed for 373 yards in a double-overtime loss at Tennessee. Only once in school history has a Blazer been tabbed for C-USA Playerof-the-Week accolades on consecutive weeks. In 2000, kicker Rhett Gallego was named the league s Special Teams Player-of-the-Week on back-to-back occasions. SHED HAS MADE IMMEDIATE IMPACT UAB running back Pat Shed has made quite an impact in his first season with the Blazers. Shed, who enrolled last January after transferring from East Mississippi CC, has been a productive runner, receiver and return specialist through the season s first nine games. Shed ranks first on the team in rushing with 813 yards, averaging 73.9 yards (No. 6 in C-USA). He is also the Blazers team leader in receptions with 40. In addition, Shed is the team s top punt and kickoff return specialist. He averages 6.1 yards per punt return and is returning kickoffs at a 22.1 yards clip. In all-purpose yards, Shed is averaging yards per game, ranking No. 2 in C-USA and No. 4 in the NCAA. Shed has 230 touches in 11 games (average of 20.9 touches per contest). HEARN HAS BEST GAME AS A BLAZER UAB WR Patrick Hearn had his best game of his Blazer career in last Saturday s win over Memphis. Hearn finished with four receptions for a career-best 123 yards and one touchdown. The touchdown came on a 72-yard pass from Bryan Ellis early in the fourth quarter and represented the longest reception of Hearn s two-year UAB career. He has now caught a TD pass in three consecutive games.

5 20 SENIORS HONORED FOR FINAL HOME GAME Twenty UAB seniors were honored in pregame ceremonies prior to last Saturday s UAB/Memphis game. Here is a list of the Blazers 2010 seniors: 39 Stephen Allen SAF Sumiton, Ala. 86 Jeffery Anderson TE Selma, Ala. 21 Daniel Borne RB Avondale, La. 30 Justin Brooks RB Dothan, Ala. 78 Greg Bulls OL Lubbock, Texas 4 Roddell Carter WR Mount Pleasant, S.C. 72 Logan Creel OL Loganville, Ga. 50 David DeCordova DT Manhattan Bch., Calif. 44 Caleb Dyck LB Dothan, Ala. 25 Brock Ferguson SAF Montgomery, Ala. 7 Frantrell Forrest WR Mobile, Ala. 22 Mike Jones WR Nashville, Tenn. 36 Elliott McGaskin SAF Mobile, Ala. 97 D.J. ELLIS OWNS 4 OF C-USA S TOP 14 PASSING PERFORMANCES IN 2010 UAB quarterback Bryan Ellis has achieved four of the top 14 (in passing yardage) performances in Conference USA this season. His 418-yard effort against East Carolina two weeks ago is the second-best single-game mark in the league thus far. He also threw for 373 yards (vs. Tennessee), 361 yards (vs. Memphis Saturday) and 360 yards (vs. Troy). Here is a look at the 14 highest passing yardage games in Conference USA during the 2010 season: Yds QB (School) vs. Opponent Date 467 David Pilano (Houston) at Sou. Miss 11/20/ B. Ellis (UAB) vs. Memp. 11/20/10 ELLIS HAS SECOND-MOST TOUCHDOWN PASSES FOR A SEASON IN UAB HISTORY With three more touchdown passes in last Saturday s win over Memphis, quarterback Bryan Ellis now has 22 for the 2010 season. That number ties for the second-most TD passes in a season by a UAB signal-caller. Darrell Hackney holds the Blazer record with 26 scoring throws during the 2004 season. Ellis 22 tied Hackney (2005) and John Whitcomb (1994) for the No. 2 mark in the Blazer record book. ELLIS 418 YARDS BEST IN NCAA NOV WEEKEND In addition to being the top passing performance in Conference USA this season, the 418-yard effort registered by quarterback Bryan Ellis vs. East Carolina on Nov. 11 was the high passing yardage mark in the country that weekend. Ellis total is the 16th-highest passing yardage figure put up this season nationally. SHED BREAKS UAB RECORDS FOR ALL-PURPOSE YARDS IN GAME AND SEASON With his 309 all-purpose yards in UAB s game vs. East Carolina two weeks ago, Blazer junior running back Pat Shed set school records for a single-game and a season. Shed s all-purpose total vs. the Pirates broke the previous UAB mark of 289 all-purpose yards set by Derrick Ingram vs. Prairie View A&M in In addition, with his 204-yard effort last week vs. Memphis, Shed has now increased his season all-purpose total to 1,939 (rushing - 813, receiving - 377, punt returns - 64, kickoff returns - 685) which also is a new Blazer record for a season. Ingram also held the season record for all-purpose, recording 1,504 during the 1994 season. SHED BREAKS UAB SEASON RECEPTIONS RECORD FOR A RUNNING BACK Junior Pat Shed, winding down his first season at UAB, has made quite an impact in several different areas. Shed, from Starkville, Miss., has established a new Blazer record for most receptions by a running back with 40. He broke the old mark by catching two in Saturday s win over Memphis. Shed eclipsed the mark held by Robert Porter who caught 38 passes during the 1993 season. Shed is also now the Blazers team leader in receptions this season with his 40 catches. That is the 10th-highest single-season total overall in UAB history. In the Oct. 23 game at Mississippi State (29-24 loss), Jones finished the contest with four receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown. Then a week later at Southern Miss, Jones bettered those numbers with eight receptions for 86 yards and three touchdowns. Against ECU on Nov. 11, Jones again caught eight passes for a career-high 110 yards. Jones already has eclipsed his personal best numbers for a season as well. He has 36 receptions for 492 yards and seven touchdowns, all career-highs for the Nashville, Tenn. native. 500-YARD CLUB UAB has rolled up 500 or more offensive yards in five of the past nine games. Anderson has increased his season totals to 27 catches for 362 yards and four touchdowns. He has career numbers of 91 receptions for 1,344 yards and 13 touchdowns. FORREST SPARKS OFFENSE WITH PAIR OF TDS Senior WR Frantrell Forrest s first of two touchdowns Oct. 16th vs. UTEP, a 20-yard touchdown grab in the fourth quarter, put him over the 2,000 mark in receiving yards for his career. He added his second touchdown of the game later in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard reception, the 150th catch of his career, to complete a 99-yard drive. He now has four touchdowns this season, five multi-touchdown games in his career, 20 career receiving touchdowns and 22 career touchdowns overall. He now has 2,215 career yards on 164 receptions, the latter second-best all-time at UAB. BLAZERS PICK OFF THREE PASSES VS. UTEP After recording only one interception in the first five games of the season and that one came in game one vs. Florida Atlantic the Blazer defense finished the game against UTEP and quarterback Trevor Vittatoe, the Miners all-time leading passer, with three interceptions. It marked the most interceptions in a game for the Blazers since they had four against Tulane on Nov. 15, UAB now has seven picks in the last six games after going four straight contests without one. STOPPING THE RUN The UAB defense held its opponent under 100 yards rushing for the third time this season in the win over UTEP last month. The Blazers held the Miners to 60 rushing yards in the contest. UAB also held Florida Atlantic (93) and Tennessee (42) to under 100 rushing yards. Conversely, the Blazers have rushed for more than 100 yards in 10-of-11 contests this year. Against UTEP, UAB rushed for 228 yards, marking the most rushing yards since the Blazers had 345 on the ground against Florida Atlantic in the season opener. Of UAB s 228 rushing yards, 226 of those were accounted for by Blazer running backs. SHED SHREDS GOLDEN EAGLES RUSH D Junior RB Pat Shed ran for 176 yards in the Oct. 30th double OT win over Southern Miss, a career-best for the product of Starkville, Miss. Shed s effort is even more impressive when one considers it came against a Golden Eagle defensive unit that had come into the game ranked No. 3 in the country in rushing yards allowed (83.4 yielded per game). Shed more than doubled that figure on his 29 carries. TWO DOUBLE OVERTIMES FOR UAB IN 2010 UAB has played in two double-overtime games this season.
