CRICKET Cricket is a common lunchtime activity. Bins and bags can be utilised as wickets, tennis balls provide a safe option for this type of play. Bats can be lent out at the beginning of breaks. Cricket can be adjusted to cater for all abilities and it is suitable for mixed gender teams. The benefits of participating in such an activity may include: Developing coping skills (losing/getting out) Communication skills (both informative and social) Developing hand eye coordination Developing gross motor skills Improved balance and coordination Developing persistence and stamina
CRICKET POETRY 1 Categories: IM, Au, Junior, Senior, Individuals, All ages Rationale: Students will develop an understanding of the need for fast running between the creases Related social activity: playing cricket in the nets Lesson Resources : worksheet, dictionary Method: English (Stage 4/5) LS.8: A student responds to increasingly complex written texts. English (Stage 6) 4.5 Comprehends and responds to a variety of texts in a range of formats to obtain information, engage in a range of recreation and leisure activities and to undertake further education, training and employment 1. Students will need a basic knowledge of the game of cricket before attempting this poem. 2. Have students read the poem to themselves then have one student read the poem out loud. 3. Before answering question 7 ask students to comment on why it is important to walk quickly across the road. Then ask students to comment on why it is important to run quickly between the creases. This information could be represented in a Venn diagram to show how the two overlap. It may also be necessary to use a visual image of a cricket pitch.
Epitaph by George McWilliam As in life so in death lies a bat of renown, Slain by a lorry (three ton); His innings is over, his bat is laid down: To the end a poor judge of a run. 1. Use your dictionary to look up the word epitaph. What does it mean? 2. Where would you expect to find an epitaph? 3. Was the cricketer who is the subject of the poem a batsman or a bowler? 4. How did he die? 5. What is the meaning of the line: His innings is over, his bat is laid down? 6. The poet has identified a cricketing weakness which might have been apparent in the dead man s attempt to cross the road. What aspect of batting was his weakness? 7. Write down a list of similarities between crossing the road and running between the wickets there are at least four.
Epitaph by George McWilliam As in life so in death lies a bat of renown, Slain by a lorry (three ton); His innings is over, his bat is laid down: To the end a poor judge of a run. Answers 1. An epitaph is words written in memory of someone who is dead. 2. Epitaphs are usually found on gravestones. 3. The cricketer was a batsman. 4. He died when he was knocked down by a lorry. 5. The line His innings is over, his bat is laid down means he is dead. 6. Running between the wickets was his cricketing weakness; he was a poor judge of a run. 7. Similarities between running between the wickets and crossing the road include: deciding when it is safe to go not being safe until you have reached the other side the kerb being like the crease, marking the beginning and end of the journey once you have left to set off you are unsafe and once you have crossed to complete the journey you are safe again sometimes having lots of time to saunter across and sometimes having little time and having to hurry both involving judgment of time speed and distance both requiring travel in a straight line as the shortest route
CRICKET POETRY 2 Categories: IO, Junior, Senior, Individuals, All ages Rationale: Students will learn that cricket can be played in lots of places Related social activity: playing cricket in the nets Lesson Resources : worksheet, coloured pencils Method: English (Stage 4/5) LS.8: A student responds to increasingly complex written texts. English (Stage 6) 4.5 Comprehends and responds to a variety of texts in a range of formats to obtain information, engage in a range of recreation and leisure activities and to undertake further education, training and employment 1. Students should brainstorm ideas about playing cricket. Put these up on the board. 2. Have students read the poem to themselves then have one student read the poem out loud. 3. Check the students understanding of the language eg Calypso, trade winds, village green, Lords etc 4. Question 1 is subjective but the students must be able to justify their feelings (Question 2). 5. Ask students if they can see the pattern of the rhyme. It may be useful for students to colour in the rhyming words at the end of each line to show the pattern (AA BB CC). This will also help them find the matching rhyming words in Question As an extension activity it may be possible for students to learn about the rhythm of the poem. The stressed syllables in each line could be underlined and then clapped out (like music) 7. Have students turn over the page and draw the cricket scene they imagine from the poem. 8. Finally, have students compare their final drawing with the brainstorm words on the board. Did their idea of cricket change after reading the poem?
Cricket Poetry Below is a cricket poem written by John Agard. Read this aloud and think about where it is set. Calypso Poem Cricket lovely cricket On a beach where I played it With those little pals of mine Under the tropical sunshine The palm trees waving at me And all the sea for my boundary. Cricket lovely cricket On a beach where I played it Here is where many greats begin To learn the art of bounce and spin And every time you hook a four Hear the seagulls cheering for more. Cricket lovely cricket On a beach where I played it Brown sand was our village green The trade winds spectating the scene I bet even Lord s cricket ground Don t have palm trees all around. Poems work through our emotions and imagination. 1. How does this poem make you feel? 2. Write down three words from the poem that make you feel this way. 3. Many poems use rhyme and there is usually a pattern about the rhyme. This poem uses rhyme. Can you list the words that rhyme with each of these words. cricket mine me begin four green ground
CRICKET POSTER Categories: IO, IM, Junior, Senior, Individuals, All ages Rationale: Students will understand the fun aspects of cricket and use these to encourage others to participate in cricket. Related social activity: playing cricket in the nets Lesson Resources : worksheet, poster Method: English (Stage 4/5) LS.11: A student views and responds to a range of visual texts, media and multimedia. 1. Students should examine the poster and complete the worksheet. There are 2 levels of worksheets. 2. Extension activities include making a PowerPoint presentation to encourage students to participate in the program. This could be based on the twelve areas of study. 3. Students with a moderate level of disability could collaborate and make a large poster on the benefits of playing cricket at lunchtime. English (Stage 6) 6.3 views and interprets a range of media to access information and for leisure and recreation

Specialist Cricket Program 1. Look at your poster. What is the main purpose of this poster? 2. Where will the cricket program take place? 3. Who can participate in this program? 4. South Australian Cricket Association Government of South Australia Department of Education and Children s Services The Heights School 3. Who can participate in this program? Boys only Girls only Both boys and girls Cricket players 4. Which of these things will players study? Level 3 coaching History of cricket Modified cricket Goal Setting 5. What kinds of protective equipment is the cricket player wearing in the poster? Pads Gloves Helmet Mouth Guard
CRICKET STATISTICS ON THE IPAD Categories: IM, Au, Junior, Senior, Individuals, All ages Rationale: Students will learn that statistics are useful in understanding who the best players are in a cricket team. Related social activity: playing cricket in the nets Lesson Resources : worksheet, Ipads with StatCalcLite installed (free app) Mathematics Method: 1. Prior learning of median, mode, range and mean is essential. 2. This lesson makes use of Ipads but similar statistics calculators can be found in the internet. 3. Once students have entered the data they will need some guidance on what to look for. 4. The mean is the average. Batsmen with a higher average are more valuable to the team. 5. The "range" is just the difference between the largest and smallest values. Do we want our batsmen to be consistent? 6. The "median" is the "middle" value in the list of numbers. To find the median, your numbers have to be listed in numerical order. In cricket a player can have one really bad day or one really good day that throws off his stats (scores). A players median represents their true middle score, we want this to be as high as possible 7. The "mode" is the value that occurs most often. If no number is repeated, then there is no mode for the list. If the mode is low then our batsman often has low runs.
Cricket Statistics Dear selector, We need to announce the team to represent Australia in the Ashes this summer in England. As you know we have lots of excellent batsmen but we can only take 3 out of the following 4 players. Michael Clarke Brad Haddin George Bailey Ashton Agar I have included their scoring records for last year to help you make your decisions. Please report back to me before the end of our lesson tomorrow. Yours sincerely Mr Rod Marsh National Selector Scoring record for 2011/12 season M Clarke B Haddin G Bailey A Agar Work out the range, mode, median and mean for each player. Use the StatCalcLite App on your Ipad. Complete the final document and be ready to present at the board meeting tomorrow

CRICKET CARDBOARD RELIEF SCULPTURE Categories: IO, IM, Au, Junior, Senior, All ages Rationale: Students will learn to translate their image of cricket as shapes and colours (abstract art) Related Social Activity: Watching and playing cricket Lesson Resources : Newsprint, Drawing Pencils, corrugated cardboard, Utility Knives, Scissors, Acrylic Paint, Brushes. Optional: sports magazines Method: Visual Arts 1. Think about the game of cricket and list: the objects or equipment used for this activity the sounds related to the activity the movement or speed of the activity the feelings you have when you watch or do this activity; do you feel excited, scared, powerful, peaceful, happy? 2. Think of how you can express all these ideas with shapes, colours, and art materials, such as paper and cardboard. 3. Brainstorm all the different things involved with cricket- equipment, number of players, field or place, how the game is played etc- everything they can think of. 4. Talk specifically about the movement and motion involved in all the aspects of their sport. What the player does- how they move, how the ball or equipment moves- directions of throws or passes etc. tackles, dives, spins, falls, kicks, jumps, whatever is in their sport- and to really think about the things that make their sport unique.
CRICKET CARDBOARD RELIEF SCULPTURE Categories: IO, IM, Au, Junior, Senior, All ages Method: 5. Draw sketches get up and try out the movements to see what it really looks like. 6. Draw shapes that showed the path of the motions they had figured out. Trace the line the ball travelled sort of thing. How do you draw the path of the movement of feet running? 7. Draw the shapes on newsprint then, cut them out and began playing with arrangements together. They have to have at least 6 shapes in their final piece. 8. Cut shapes from corrugated cardboard. Teachers may need to Visual Arts LS.8 do a lot of cutting if utility knives are used (alternatively assign this task to a senior class to complete then return all pieces to the students) 9. The pieces are then painted using colour schemes that represented the sport. 10. The pieces are then glued together and hung. Add a title their work and write an artist's statement explaining the work.
