1 13 TANJUNG MANIS FISHING SAFARI 2005 PUSAKA The encouraging response of the first Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari in 2004 had inspired STIDC to make it an annual event aiming at promoting the township as a new tourist destination and a prominent economic hub of the central region of Sarawak. This year s fishing safari, 7th. - 8th. May was held simultaneously with MAKSAK Fishing Safari. This auspicious event saw an overwhelming participation of anglers statewide. Indeed, this is a visible sign that the township has great potential to entice the masses particularly the fishing enthusiasts and it is therefore hoped that the future fishing safari would lure even more participants from both inside and outside the country, Malaysian Tourism Minister, the Honourable Datuk Dr. Leo Michael Toyad said. His speech was read by the Deputy General Manager of STIDC, Haji Rabani Taip. Besides being an interesting hobby, fishing also tests the level of perseverance and builds the personality of a person. In addition, it helps to minimize social illness. Hence, it should be promoted intensively, the minister said. Winners posing after the prize giving ceremony. He pointed out that the fishing industry of Sarawak has not been fully exploited by the locals citing the example that the state is producing only 200,000 metric tons of marine resources per annum though it has the potential to produce 600,000 metric tons worth RM2 billion annually. He added that the state is renowned for having abundant of marine resources. The locals were therefore urged to grab these opportunities taking advantage of the good infrastructure provided by STIDC and the promising prospect of this sector. Hopefully this activity will create awareness among the locals on the potential of this industry and becomes the platform to make fishing an important economic activity that could generate lucrative income, he emphasised. The fishing communities were also advised to shift from traditional into modern fishing technique to ensure optimum income and sustainable supply of marine resources for mutual benefit. STIDC Fishing Safari was divided into three categories based on aggregate points, fish weight and navigator s performance. Under category I (aggregate point), Wong King Uieng, Chiew Hoo Ann and Pek Guan Seng won the top three position with 180, 99 and points respectively. Majid Openg, Amrizan Madian and Masmu Na became the winners of category II (fish weight) with 15.15kg, 9.40kg and 8.70kg of fish each. Yakub Sabu emerged champion of category III (navigator s performance) while Chen Hoo Sing and Abu Bakar secured the second and third placing respectively. MAKSAK Fishing Safari on the other hand was divided into Group and Individual categories. LAK-A, PUSTAKA- A and STIDC-B won the first three placing under the Group category. Bahrin Rosli was the overall victor of the Individual category while Standley Sayang and Wong King She secured the second and third position respectively. STIDC Golf Competition 2005 Head of the state of Sarawak, His Excellency Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Mohammad Salahuddin was among the 250 participants for the recent Golf Competition organised by STIDC. The competition was held at Sarawak Golf Club on 22nd. May 2005 with attractive prizes such as Rolex watch and a 2.5 litre Mazda Fighter Arista. Head of the state (centre) posing at the golf-course.
