1 Corvette Club OF Texas Volume 60 Issue 5 - May 2008 Corvette Club of Texas PO Box Dallas TX, Sponsored by Friendly Chevrolet 2754 N. Stemmons Fry - Dallas TX, 75207

2 From the Editor Meeting Information Well, the last few tanks of gas I ve put in the Our Friendly Rep! Corvette Club of Texas (CCT) Monthly Membership Meeting Held every third Friday of the month, at 7:30 p.m. at Friendly Chevrolet, 2754 North Stemmons Freeway, Dallas. All members, visitors and Corvette owners are Welcome. Following each CCT monthly membership meeting, a CCT after club social event is hosted by a CCT Member, starting at approximately 8:30 p.m. Monthly Board Meeting Held on the Monday before the third Friday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at Friendly Chevrolet. All members are invited to attend. Corvette were pushing $60. (No, I don t want to talk about Paulette s Suburban...) I figured out that the Azalea tour last month cost around $40 in gas alone. The tour was great. We saw some very beautiful homes in Tyler and the flowers were in their prime. A nice touch was several pretty girls stationed along the route wearing antebellum costumes. Seemed like they liked our Corvettes as much as we appreciated their friendly waves and smiles. Don t get me wrong, I do like the tours Patti has been setting up for us each month. They are very entertaining and informative. But, if gas keeps going up every week as it seems like it is doing, I ll have to think twice before any more long day trips. My local gas station is up to $3.76 and I wouldn t be at all surprised if it doesn t hit $4 in May. I see that the next few month s activities, with the exception of the National Convention, are closer to home so we can think about others things than conserving gas for a while... 3 President s Prerogative May 2008 Activities I was not able to attend the April membership meeting because of the Boerne trip. My appreciation goes to Mel for leading that meeting. It looks as though I will also miss the May meeting as well due to prior business obligations. I don t have the final word yet as to my Dubai business trip which may require me to be there as long as four months. Mark your calendars for our upcoming CCT sponsored NCCC party on Sunday, June 22nd, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We will need everyone s help to make our club s party a fun and memorable event. My thanks go to Ronny Walker who extended an invitation to all our club members to join him, his wife, Brenda, and family on April 5th at their beautiful home in Euless for a pool side Louisiana crawfish boil. His warm hospitality and friendship is very much appreciated by all. Ronny will also be providing music for our Tulsa party. 8 Azalea and Spring Flower Trail By Charles Whitaker Twelve members of the Corvette Club met at the Cracker Barrel at I-635 and US-80 Saturday morning for a tour of the azaleas in Tyler, Texas. With six beautiful Corvettes lead by Dennis & Patti Bertwell, we followed our leaders toward Tyler stopping at Rudy s Barbecue Restaurant for lunch. The barbecue was great and the free dessert with ice cream that Gene received and shared with me was very much appreciated. After a big lunch that made me want a nap, we drove through downtown Tyler and picked up the Azalea Trail route through an upscale residential area. The first house that we saw had a very nicely landscaped yard with beautiful azaleas and very pretty young ladies as greeters. There were many more yards with beautiful azaleas, but there was one very nice house with a nice yard that Dennis and Patti had decided to stop in front of for Corvette photographs and a car show contest. My 1978 Corvette won 1 st price by unanimous decision of the judges who you can see in the photograph standing by my car. On the way back home we stopped at a DQ for refreshments and then Gene and I split off from the group who were headed to a Louisiana Low County Boil at one of our member s house in Euless, Texas. Since I am mildly allergic to seafood we decided not to go with them. We drove over 225 miles and the food and the hum of the car made me sleepy, but the car ran perfectly and we had a great time thanks to Dennis and Patti. 8

10 The CCT Bourne Journey, Spring 2008 by Carol Factor Friday, April 4 th was a perfect day to start our weekend trip to Boerne, Texas. Five Corvettes from the Corvette Club of Texas met with their two-way radios charged, tanks full (ouch! over $3.50 a gallon!), as all of us (James and Joann Powdrill, Brian and Janet Gelles, Mitch and Carol Factor) pulled onto the highway to start our caravan behind our leaders, Dennis and Patti Bertwell. In Glen Rose, Bob and Paula Mischel joined us. Chuck and Cathy Kraut and Ben and Billie Loflin had traveled to Boerne earlier in the week. Pat Clancy, one our newest members and living not far from Boerne in Spicewood, Texas, just outside of Austin, also joined us for the weekend activities. The next stop was Hico to visit the Wiseman House of fine artisan handcrafted chocolates. Then we continued south to Lampasas for a BBQ lunch. After lunch and before our stop at the famous Deutsch Apple for homemade pie and ice cream in Blanco, Texas, we made a short stop at Whittington s in Johnson City to get our weekend supply of beef and turkey jerky. We drove into Boerne that afternoon, full and happy, to check in and freshen up at the Holiday Inn before attending the 50 s style Sock Hop at the Boerne Community Center hosted by the Texas Corvette Association from San Antonio. Some of our group really got into the swing of it by wearing their 50 s attire. A barbecue dinner was served along with table after table filled with desserts of all kinds while a live band played familiar tunes from the 50 s. 10

11 The CCT Bourne Journey Continued The car show the next morning in downtown Boerne was fantastic! From old and new Corvettes to 50 s era cars and many custom street rods, it was a great display contributed mostly by the members of the Texas Corvette Association of San Antonio and the Longhorn Corvette Club from Austin. The event included a silent auction, vendors selling everything from car parts to pink t-shirts, and shopping on Main Street. We met for lunch at the Hungry Horse for some country cookin. After a leisurely afternoon, it was time eat dinner. We caravanned to the highly acclaimed Cabernet Grill Restaurant at Cotton Mill Village located just outside Fredericksburg surrounded by water ponds, herb gardens, and log cabin lodging. Sunday morning we left the little town of Boerne early to travel to the 22 mile paved route through a particularly rugged section of the Hill Country called The Willow City Loop, famous for its magnificent views and wildflowers in the spring. Three s a charm, and after driving through the loop, we couldn t resist the temptation to try family owned Cooper s Old Time Pit Bar-Be-Que located in Llano, Texas, rumored to be the best in the business. It was an excellent way to end the weekend! Patti and Dennis Bertwell did an outstanding job of leading and coordinating our Hill Country trip. All of us enjoyed the CCT camaraderie, a variety of events and, of course, great food! For sale ONLY FITS C5 TOPS Fitted top bag for C5 Coupe If you have two tops, leave your top off for long periods or have a lot of sharp stuff in the back when you stow your top this is just what you need.
