Let s Begin with a Basic Math Problem Article and photos by Mary Rozmajzi Ten cars met up in Petaluma, CA, for a weekend run to Ft. Bragg, CA. ((1) Datsun Roadster convertible, (4) Datsun 510s, (2) Datsun 240Zs, (1) Nissan 350Z. Lois and Ruffin Apperson were in the final car, a Subaru Outback. (Their Nissan 350Z was on loan to their daughter.) Run host, Ken Clark led the group out of the parking lot, heading for Highway 1, through Bodega Bay, Jenner, Point Arena, Mendocino, and finally, Ft. Bragg. So here is the math problem How did the Subaru (the final car in the run) arrive in Ft. Bragg before anyone else? 2 Z News Flying Start July 2017 Zs at Speed By Jason Green Until recently, I was a fan of the push-to-start button, including the one found in my Nissan 370Z. It was more thrilling to hear the engine roar to life at a simple touch than the old-fashioned twist of a key. But my outlook has changed, thanks in part to a bit of humorously bad luck. As I left the office on a recent Monday, my keys, including the fob needed to activate the button, slipped from my grasp and fell through the inch-wide gap between the eighth floor and the elevator I was getting ready to board. What are the odds? I probably should play the lottery. Fortunately, there were people in the building working on the elevators and they were able to recover my keys. But that was the extent of the good news. The fob split apart when it hit the bottom of the elevator shaft, expelling its critical electronic guts to parts unknown. If I want to drive the Z again anytime soon, I ll have to replace the fob. And it won t be cheap. If you go through a dealer, the fob runs about $188 and costs $80 to program. Oh, and the Z also will have to be towed to the dealer to be programmed. So, yeah, I d gladly trade my starter button for a traditional ignition. Ironically, I recently purchased a GTR button to replace the stock button. Anyhow, there are more reasons to be happy than not, especially with ZONC s annual car show nearly upon us. 3 Z News July 2017 Datsloco Car Show Article and pictures by Jason Green There s nothing quite like a gathering of Datsuns and Nissans, and when it comes to pulling them together en masse, few can do it better than Datslocos California. On May 27, Z Owners of Northern California Vice President Linda Williams and I woke up at the crack of dawn to join a colorful caravan of vehicles to the 13th Annual Datslocos Car Show and Swap Meet in Manteca. Our caravan served as a preview of sorts for the event and included a tangerine 510, a range of Datsun pickup trucks, Zs and a silver R32 (Nissan GT-R) with electric blue wheels. A low-slung Mazda RX-7 and a Toyota Supra also showed up. Held in a parking lot near a Bass Pro Shop, the show easily attracted more than 200 entrants and vendors. Among the more eye-catching rides were a Marvin the Martian-themed Roadster, a lifted Datsun 1200 pickup (green and reminiscent of the Hulk) and a 510 wagon with one of the most pristine engine bays I ve ever laid eyes on. Just as impressive to Linda and I was the laid-back and welcoming vibe. This was evident by the presence of cars other than Datsuns and Nissans. For example, one section of the parking lot was occupied by classic Toyotas. Page 3 The annual car show began as a swap meet at a home in the early 2000s and soon required a bigger venue. Different shops in Tracy and Livermore hosted the event until it finally moved to the parking lot in Manteca. Linda and I were happy to represent ZONC at the car show and saw our participation as a way to give back to Datslocos, which has supported several of our events in recent years. ZONC member, Gino Guillen, his wife and three children joined the run in OL BLU, their teal 2-door 1971 Datsun 510. And they brought along friends and five cars from the California chapter of Datslocos. (Gino is founder and president of that Datsun club.) Gino traded mechanical labor for OL Blu back in It came all-original with an automatic transmission and a shifter on the column. He said the car was so slow, it Answer Lois and Ruffin were the only ones on the run to follow the run map. Everyone else followed the lead car and trip navigator Mary Rozmajzl (Ken s wife). Mary got lost less than a mile from the start and detoured everyone into a Petaluma shopping mall. Carol and Bob Gray came to the rescue in their Nissan 350Z, navigating everyone, minus Lois and Ruffin, back on track. The remainder of the run was uneventful, though quite pleasant with blue skies, ocean views and rolling, winding roads. Lois reacted to the turn of events. So that s what it feels line on a one-car rally, she said once everyone caught up with her and Ruffin at the Surf Motel and Gardens in Ft. Bragg. A visit to the Glass Beach was the next stop. It s always fun to get that one special souvenir. And the Glass Beach offers a few unique ones along with seashells and driftwood. Then (Continued on page 7) Page 6

7 Z News Let s Begin with a Basic Math Problem (Continued from page 6) couldn t get out of the way if its life depended on it. So he installed a 1998, ka24de fuel injected motor from a Datsun 240SX. Next came a Datsun 280ZX 5-speed transmission and finally a Datsun 240Z differential. Gino says OL BLU is very respectable now. Datslocos member, Brian Lee, is also a proud owner of a blue 2-door 1971 Datsun 510. He bought it on E-bay back in 2007 and spent 3 years restoring it. Now he drives it everywhere 125,000 miles so far and many more to go. Brian s ride goes by the name SSSIZZL. That s hot! Sammy Barajas yellow 4-door Datsun 510 is three years older. Sammy, by the way, is a Datslocos original, having July 2017 been with the club since it began 5 years ago. His ride is known as OXITO or little eight. Jason Towns Townsend from Datslocos, owns the newest Datsun 510 in the group a blue However, he has owned his car the longest. It was purchased back in high school as his very first car. The price? $500. Half he paid and the other half was covered by his mother. Thanks Mom. Patrick Johnson and his son, Gary, drove their red, 1969 Datsun 1600 Roadster convertible. It s been a labor of love for Pat who has handled most of the work himself. 36,000 miles later, and that ride shows no signs of slowing down. Juan Rendon began his love affair with Datsun when he lived in Mexico. He s owned his red 510 for 18 years. This rainbow parade of Datsun s through the streets of Ft. Bragg drew many onlookers. But all too soon, the Datslocos group headed back south to the Lathrop, CA area. Their trip to Ft. Bragg was a one-day run up and back. Ken and Mary hosted the ZONC members who stayed overnight to sample local cuisine and, in Carol Gray s case, photograph a sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Sunday morning was spent leisurely touring and photographing the beauty of the Mendocino Botanical Gardens. The most recently purchased Z on the run was owned by the newest couple Aaron Green and his wife, Regina O Shea. They ve been married just over six months, AND have owned their 1970 Datsun 240Z less than two months. Aaron saw the car online and fell in love. As soon as they returned from the run to their home in Sunnyvale, CA, he began that all too familiar ritual of repairing and upgrading the clutch, transmission and engine. Not one to sit around, Aaron already has front and rear wheel bearings on order. One last observation on the Ft. Bragg trip It could easily be called an Old-timer s Run. But, that has nothing to do with the age of the folks behind the wheel. For the first time in a long time, Datsun s outnumbered Nissans 8 to 1.
