Registration is from 10:30AM to 12:30PM. There is a short rallye school at 11:00AM for those new to rallying. The entry fee is $15.00 per car. There are 6 classes to run in, with awards in all classes. The profits from the rallye will go to charity: Canine Companions for Independence. 2 Z News April 2011 PRESIDENT'S C O R N E R Changes to Your Board As the first quarter of 2011 ends, there have been some changes to the Board of Directors of ZONC. Tiffini Clark resigned as President and under provisions of our Constitution, I became President and the Board appointed Ann Devor as Vice President to complete the 2011 terms. I would like to thank Tiffini for her contributions to ZONC. Ann is our Membership Coordinator and a past twoterm President of ZONC and her skills and knowledge are very valuable to our club. As is her nature, Ann is feverishly working on events for ZONC and just organized the 5th Annual Contra Costa Cruise held on March 12, I would like to say Thank you to Ann for accepting this position and for her passion for making ZONC a success! I would like to thank all of the Board and Members of ZONC for your support as I transition to the President. Fortunately, I ve known the current members of the Board for a few years and I know their passion for ZONC and their desire to have successful events that our members want! We re going to continue to work hard for our Membership and continue to educate the public about the Z, GTR, Roadster, 510, and G Coupe. As the year progresses, we have many events on our calendar (see ZONC.org for details) for our Members. Along the way, we ll be asking for help and I m always amazed that so many of you step up to the challenge and help out with whatever is needed! As we are preparing for our Annual Car Show at the Brisbane Marina, again, we re putting out that call for help. Please contact any Board Member and your talents will be utilized! 7 Z News April 2011 the occasional bicyclists, one who yelled at us for walking in the bike lane, our line of cars dominated the road and stretched down the length of the hill. Contra Costa Cruise to Berkeley By Ann Devor Thirty-two cars gathered at Panera Bread in Concord on Saturday, March 12 for the 5th Annual Contra Costa Cruise. At last count, we enjoyed the company of four 240Zs (Charlie Lincoln, Ken and Mary Clark, Duane Thomson, Paul Gommel), two 260Zs (Saul Korduner, Joe Armstead), one 280Z (Alex Headley), two 280ZXs (Stephen Wong, Juan Davila), two 300ZXs (Lyent and Gloria Hogue, Omar Esquivel), thirteen 350Zs (Dale and Chris Kusaba, Katrina O Brien, Odessa Moore, Jacob Wheeler, Lois and Ruff Apperson, David Laney, Dennis and Nancy Scovill, David Morse, Peter and Karen Iozzia, David Ee, Bob and Marci Jenkins, Rolf Johnsen, Ann Devor), five 370Zs (Tom Navone, Mike Fernandez, Wade Warren, Larry Becker, Curtis Lewis and Hal Archler), one G35 (Francisco Martinez), and one GT-R (Roy and Louise Dorn). Also along for the fun were Jack and Yolanda Atkinson whose 300ZX was at home awaiting some new tires. The Cruise started off in two groups making our way past a series of signals on Willow Pass and Taylor Blvd. to Grayson Road. Soon we were on Reliez Valley Rd. and headed toward the narrow Alhambra Valley canyon. The weather was cooperating, the roads were mostly dry, and we enjoyed blue skies and sunshine on the roads through Briones. After all of us (yay!) negotiated the left turn on Bear Creek Road, we stopped on a long hill to take pictures and say hi to the cows grazing on the hillside. Ignoring We crossed over San Pablo Dam Road and began the winding ascent up Wildcat Canyon Road. After passing by Inspiration Point, we stopped again at Tilden Park s Mineral Springs picnic grounds, this time for a pit stop, conversation and more photos. Then we took off again, driving past the Botanical Gardens, the Brazilian Room and the golf course, on our way to Grizzly Peak Blvd. Once we were on the crest of the Oakland Hills, we were rewarded with spectacular vistas of the Bay and San Francisco in the distance, with the wide concrete ribbons of the new Bay Bridge far below us. We descended from the hills via Skyline Blvd. to Old Tunnel Road. We passed by the historic site of the Old Broadway Tunnel, now dynamited and closed, and made our way to the transit section of the tour on Hwy. 13 and busy Ashby Ave. As Wade Warren commented, Now I remember why I hate Ashby Avenue because the traffic and signals were nearly unbearable. But we made our way through, no one getting ticketed for a missing front license plate, and eventually found ourselves on the Frontage Road alongside the Bay, next to congested I-80. Within a short distance, we turned on University and parked our cars at the Fourth St. parking lot across the way from Brennan s. Everyone enjoyed the heaping plates of food served cafeteria style at Brennan s. We settled down to eat in a private room reserved just for ZONC. New member Ron Jackson was waiting for us there. The buzz at the table as we talked and laughed was loud and happy. Many thanks to everyone who participated. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and some of the participants mentioned that they are already looking forward to next year. Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca, August 19-21, 2011 Main Corral on August 20, 2011 ZONC is hosting a VIP car corral at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion on August 19-21, 2011 at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway. The main event day will be Saturday, August 20. We have requested our favorite location in the lakebed area in the center of the Raceway. This year, the honored marque is Jaguar, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the E-type coupe and convertible and also the 60th anniversary of Jaguar's first win at the 24 Hours of LeMans. Please see the flyer in this edition of ZNews for pricing information. The track is selling tickets and corral passes separately this year please note that each person must have a ticket and each car must have a corral pass to park in ZONC s VIP corral. You will get a race program, event poster and a dash plaque with each corral pass. Only 25 parking spaces will be available, but if there is demand early enough, we can try to get more room. We will offer coffee and doughnuts on Saturday morning, August 20, while we watch the cars in warm-up laps around the track. As mentioned in earlier editions of ZNews, the Can Am race cars will be racing this year and Formula One cars will compete in another race, so the Laguna Seca pits will be jammed with high horsepower mania that you can see and photograph up close. And speaking of horsepower, we are working with Nissan on plans to show the updated 530 hp 2012 GT-R supercar, hopefully as an honored guest in ZONC s corral as in Don t miss the summer fun in cool Monterey! Card $15 $68 $90 BRUNCH RUN ~ MAY 21, 2011 ~ The Brunch Run is a good tune up for the major runs that come later in the season. It is not too short, nor too long. The Run provides different types of challenges for drivers and gets you ready for the summer. We will start in Winters with a leisurely brunch at the Putah Creek Café. The food is all home made and the portions are more than ample. The restaurant was featured in an episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. After brunch we will make a climb to Lake Berryessa and the dam overlook. After a photo shoot, we will continue around the south side of the lake and have another opportunity for photos by the lake. After this last photo shoot, we will continue around the lake until we hit the Silverado Trail and then Wooden Valley Road. The Run is both challenging for experienced and not so experienced drivers. There are no towns to go through and from the time we leave Winters there are no signals or stop signs until Silverado Trail.
