2 PRESIDENT'S CORNER Moving Swiftly Along As we come to the end of the year, so comes the end of my term as your President. I ve enjoyed working for you and working with your Executive Board of Directors. We accomplished many things over my two year term, we ve had many events and activities and 2013 looks to be another great year for us! I would like to thank you, the Membership, for your support during the past two years! Because of you, we have ZONC! We have added some new Members who have stepped up and have planned events that you, our Members, enjoyed. Our North Valley representative, Rolf Johnsen, and Members Ike Holloman and Rae Davis were very active and exposed ZONC to the North Valley region with several Meet and Greets and runs amongst the beautiful Calaveras County hills and communities. I would like to thank Curtis Lewis and Hal Archler for being an influence to get 370Z owners into ZONC. I would like to thank Alan Hirotani for his thezenthusiast calendar and web site, thezenthusiast. com, which shows all of the events that the Z community of Northern California are interested in. I would like to thank our super volunteers : Ken and Mary Clark, Ruff and Lois Apperson, Dale and Chris Kusaba and Jason Green. These folks were at all of our events and they would do whatever was needed to make the event successful. I would like to thank our many sponsors who help promote ZONC: Antioch Nissan, North Bay Nissan, Vallejo Nissan, Central Valley Nissan, Driven Authority of Sacramento, Auto Heaven of Sacramento, ZCar Garage of San Jose, Hagerty Insurance, Meguiar s, Doc s-auto.com of Mariposa, and many others who offer discounts for parts and services to our Members. I would like to thank those who contribute to the ZONC.org Facebook page. Lastly, I want to thank your Executive Board for their dedication and hard work in promoting ZONC and our events. These folks have attended many meetings, traded many s and telephone calls to conduct ZONC business. We successfully transitioned our Annual Car Show from the Blackhawk Museum to the Brisbane Marina, we developed guidelines for events for our Members who plan events, we ve developed a great working relationship with the Sonoma Raceway, formerly Sears Point Raceway, to where our Members are given access to the hospitality area and laps on the track at the events that we attend there, we rejoined ZCCA and attended the 25th Annual Z Car Convention, ZCON 2012, in Chandler, AZ and we were transparent and kept the Membership informed about our activities. In addition to approving events, your Board attended several events because like you, we too love to drive our Zs. Ann, Roy, Peter and Marci, its been a pleasure and honor to have worked with you! Thank you Ann for accepting the Vice President position when I became President, your knowledge and connections with the Z community are invaluable. Thank you Roy, our finances are accurate and accounted for to the very last penny! Thank you Peter for your connections with the Sonoma Raceway and for making the ZNews able to be mailed in color. And lastly Marci, thank you for all of the work that you have done, making sure that everything was in order and for sending out the blasts to our Members about our meetings and events. I look forward to working with you as our new President in Upcoming events: December 2, Our 40th Annual Installation and Awards Banquet at the Harvest Buffet in Cache Creek Casino in Brooks, CA. Please bring an unwrapped toy for our Toys for Tots donation to the United States Marine Corps. Please see ZONC.org for more details. Our Planning meeting for 2013 will be on January 12, 2013 at the Straw Hat Pizza, 251 Pittman Road, Fairfield, CA 94533, (707) , with the meeting starting at 11:30AM. This is the meeting where we will plan our calendar for the year and we would like you to attend the meeting with your event and two or three days that you can hold your event on. It s autumn in Northern California and Mother Nature has playfully given us some nice days, some cold days and some rainy days! There are still many nice days to go out and take a scenic drive to shop, eat or just visit some place new. Gas prices are going down, so fill up the tank and go for a drive and remember to always enjoy the ride! (continued in the next column) Page 2

6 Postscripts from ZCon, 2012 Article and Photos By Ann Devor Last month we told you about the main event (at least for us) at ZCon 2012, the tour of Nissan s Arizona test track, but there was a lot more going on at the Z Convention. A few final notes about ZCon 2012: We arrived at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino on Thursday evening after a short tour of northern Arizona and standin on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. We left Winslow, traveling south on Hwy. 87 that took us high up on the Mongollon rim and through mostly volcanic mountains and saguaro cactus north of the Valley of the Sun. The hotel entrance was dominated by a large and dramatic sculpture of a wild horse, and the hotel room was very nice, lacking only a refrigerator. Friday morning, we registered for the convention, received our goody bag and met the people who worked hard to put the Z event together. The ZCCA store was full of attractive merchandise including t-shirts, posters, and road gear. We bought a sun-shade for our 350Z to help protect it from the blazing Arizona sun. From the hotel, we drove a short way to Firebird Race Track to see Zs darting around the track. There, we found ZONCers and good friends, Lee Woolfolk and Stuart and Sandy Gates watching the track activity. The local Nissan dealership, a big sponsor of the convention, set continued next column up a tent and brought a variety of new cars. Given that the weather was already 95 in the morning sun, we were happy to spend some time in the shade of the Nissan tent while we watched a white GT-R speed around the track. Besides the tour of the test track, the other big event on Saturday was the banquet and closing ceremonies. The banquet opened with Native American song and dance performed by Yellow Bird Productions, perfect entertainment for the Arizona location and its native heritage. Mr. K attended the banquet via Skype and although the Skype hook-up repeatedly failed, Mr. K was determined to see the show and kept logging back on. At 103 years old, Mr. K showed unlimited enthusiasm for the Z car and waved to all of the Z owners in the audience. He greeted his former assistant, Johnnie Gable with great fondness and noted that she looked good after a recent hospitalization. We were all really happy to see Johnnie too. Yoshiko Matsuo, Chief of Design and the head of the 240Z design team, presented a slide show of the 240Z s design stages, showing everything from drawings to clay models to final production. While Mr. Matsuo spoke in Japanese through a translator, we recognized a few words like sports car and We were fascinated to learn that Mr. Matsuo had hoped to create a line of 240Z cars including a station wagon. A convertible 240Z was also designed and at least one spec convertible was manufactured for testing and possible production in Japan. continued on page 7 Page 6

7 Postscripts continued from page 6 Following Mr. Matsuo, Randy Rodriguez, the designer of the 370Z also presented a slide show. Randy described the competitive process that led to his drawings being chosen for the 370Z s production. He also promised us that we can expect exciting new cars to be unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show in January, 2013 and told us, as Z owners, that we will not be disappointed. While Randy understandably would not disclose any specific details about a possible new Z, he showed drawings of Infiniti s Emerg-en and said there was a good chance it would go into production. Diego. San Diego also is home to a Nissan design facility and we will be watching the line-up of events to see if it will include a tour of Nissan s San Diego location. Mark your calendars you won t want to miss it! 2013 CAR EVENTS The 2013 ZCCA convention will be in New Hampshire and plans are already being put together for a great show next August 5-9. On the same dates in August, 2014, the convention will be closer to home in San April Z-Car West Coast Nationals April 28 May 2 California Mille May 9-11 American Le Mans at Laguna Seca May Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival May 19 Marin Sonoma Concours June NASCAR at Sonoma Raceway Aug Rolex Monterey Motorsorts at Laguna Seca Aug Indy Grand Prix at Sonoma Raceway Sept 5-7 Continental Tire Car Festival at Laguna Seca Sept 7-8 WTCC at Sonoma Raceway Sept 15 Danville Concours continued next column Page 7
