1 The Grand Strand Hibernian Newsletter Friendship Christian Charity Unity Joseph J McGarry Division 1 January February, 2017 President s Report Brothers: Allow me to express, once again, my appreciation for all the support that I have been given during my tenure in office. Without your help, nothing would have been accomplished. Special thanks to Mark Bermingham and Jim McGuire for that they have done over the past two years. all Don t forget to get the money to me for the Raffle Tickets. The money needs to be in to the State at the beginning of March, before our March Meeting. Also, I hope you all plan to attend our Annual Installation and Awards Luncheon at Ocean Creek, Sunday, January 29, See Paul Jenkins to reserve a spot. Also coming up is the return of Seamus Kennedy with a whole new afternoon of Irish entertainment. The concert will be on February 12, 2017 at OLSS Banquet Hall. The Saint Patrick's Day Parade in North Myrtle Beach on Saturday, March11th, A reminder that annual dues were due January 1,2017, if you have not paid please do so as soon as possible. LEST WE FORGET Patrolman Joseph McGarry AOH Brother Last December 29 th marked the slaying of Patrolman Joseph McGarry of the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

3 LEST WE FORGET Patrolman Joseph McGarry AOH Brother Last December 29 th marked the slaying of Patrolman Joseph McGarry of the Myrtle Beach Police Department. Officer McGarry died on that date in 2002 at the age of 28. He was questioning an individual when he was gunned down. His partner, Michael Guthinger, who was also fired upon, returned fire, wounding the assailant, who was later captured. McGarry's killer, Luzenski Cottrell, age 25, was convicted twice for his murder. Officer McGarry has been described as an exemplary police officer. A native of Rhode Island, he had been on the Myrtle Beach P.D. for four years. He was also, a member of this Division. The name of the Division was changed to the Joseph McGarry Division in his honor and as a means of perpetuating his memory. The practice of handing out St. Michael medals, the Patron Saint of Police Officers, by Division members was established to thank them for their service to our communities and to insure that Officer McGarry is not forgotten.

5 LAOH St. Brigid s Division Presents St. Brigid s Feast Day Mass Our Lady Star of the Sea Noon January 29, 2017 This Mass is being held in Conjunction with the AOH / LAOH Installation Luncheon held at 2 PM at Ocean Creek Resort. All AOH / LAOH members and guests are welcomed to participate in this Mass Hibernians and guests gather in the Church Vestibule prior to mass (11:45). The OLSS Pastor has reserved seating and we will enter as a group.
