The date was May 1, 1920, and the 29-year-old right-hander faced Joe Oeschger of the Boston Braves at Braves Field. Cadore s team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, scored in the fourth inning and the Braves answered with a run in the fi fth and that would be were the scoring would end. Cadore and Oeschger batted to a 1-1 tie when the game was called following the 26th inning due to darkness. Both pitchers threw complete games with Cadore allowing 15 hits, fi ve walks and seven strikeouts. The curve ball specialist would go on to win a career-high 15 games that season for the Dodgers, including his only World Series start that season against the Cleveland Indians. 4 Bulldogs Clubhouse The new home of the Gonzaga University baseball team, Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field, not only features state-of-the-art amenities for fans, but for the Bulldogs themselves. Major League amentites include authentic home and visitor dugouts with underground passages to full-service clubhouses. The Zags clubhouse is highlighted by a player lounge, both coaches and players locker rooms, a training room, a mud room, showers and a laundry facility. The clubhouse not only serves as a game-day amenity, but also provides meeting space for the Bulldogs, as the lounge is highlighted by several leather couches, a wall-mounted fl at-screen television and a pair of computers set aside for academic use by the Zags. Indoor Practice Facility In November of 2002 the Gonzaga University baseball program began use of a new indoor baseball practice facility - The Warehouse. The facility contains a weight room, exercise area, three state-of-the-art pitching machines, four regulation hitting cages, and two full length pitching lanes. The batting cages can also be moved back to allow infi elders to take ground balls on the artifi cial surface. Since the opening of the Baseball Warehouse, Gonzaga has achieved early-season success against high profi le programs across the country, including victories over Oklahoma, Arizona State, San Diego and the two-time National Champion Oregon State Beavers. The use of the facility also propelled Gonzaga into the national rankings in 2006 and the program s second appearance in the West Coast Conference Championship series in

6 6 Mark Machtolf Head Coach Fifth Season Overall Record.528 Winning Percentage WCC Record Mark Machtolf is entering his fi fth year at the helm of the Gonzaga University baseball prgram. Prior to being named head coach on Aug. 7, 2003, the Spokane native served 13 years as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs. Since being named head coach, Machtolf has posted a record for a.528 winning percentage, placing him third all-time in Gonzaga history. Machtolf made an immediate impact on the Bulldogs program guiding Gonzaga to a record in West Coast Conference play and a overall record for the 2004 season. He also placed three players on the All-WCC fi rst team including catcher Kiel Thibault, who was named the WCC Player of the Year. Last season, for the fi rst time as head coach, Machtolf guided the Bulldogs to a second-place fi nish in the West Coast Conference and, as a result, a spot in the WCC Championship series against regular- season champion University of San Diego. Gonzaga s second-place fi nish was its highest in WCC history as the Zags had not fi nished higher than fi fth when the league played a non-divisional format. In 2007, the Bulldogs posted a record, marking the most victories since the 1990 campaign. Last season also marked the fi rst time since 1990 the Bulldogs posted 30-plus victories. As a result of their 15-6 WCC record, the Zags landed eight All-West Coast Conference selections, including WCC Pitcher of the Year and third team All-American Clayton Mortensen. The eight conference accolades tied a program high. Under Machtolf s guidance the Bulldogs have become one of the top power-hitting teams in the country. In 2002 the Bulldogs set a school and West Coast Conference record for home runs with 92, fi nishing 7th in the nation in home-runs-per-game. Gonzaga slugger Nate Gold led the nation with 33 home runs en route to earning fi rst-team All-America honors. In 1999, Gonzaga hitters smashed several offensive school records including home runs (82), runs scored (455), runs batted in (425) and hits per game (10.75). In the summer of 2006, Machtolf was named one of the assistant coaches for the USA Baseball Team. Under Machtolf s guidance, the National Team posted a record, including going a perfect 8-0 at the Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World Championships in Havanna, Cuba. The.919 win percentage for the season was the best ever posted by a USA Baseball collegiate team and the tournament win was the inaugural title for a USA Baseball National Team in Cuba. Machtolf has also been instrumental in the construction of Gonzaga s new state-of-the-art facility, Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Machtolf assisted with the guidance of the project that helped create the new home of Bulldog baseball. Prior to becoming head coach Machtolf s primary responsibilities were working with Zags hitters and coaching outfi elders. He also served as Gonzaga s recruiting coordinator. During his 17-year tenure with the Bulldogs, Mactolf has seen the program produce 69 All-West Coast Conference selections, including two WCC Player of the Year selections and last season s conference Pitcher of the Year. He has also been part of coaching of four All-America selections, six academic All-American honorees as well as six Freshman All- America selections. Under his guidance, Gonzaga has seen 22 former Zags drafted in the Major League Baseball draft, including eight in the top-10 rounds and 12 in the top 20, en route to 33 Bulldogs signing professional contracts. Machtolf has coached three former Bulldogs with MLB experience, including two-time National League All-Star and 2004 NL Rookie of the Year Jason Bay. Machtolf entered the coaching ranks as the hitting coach at Gonzaga for the season and worked with the Zags until the completion of the 1990 campaign. Following one season as an assistant coach at Whitworth College, Machtolf accepted the head coaching position at Gonzaga Prep and coached through the 1995 season. In 1996, Machtolf returned to the Bulldog dugout as a volunteer coach and was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 1998 season. A 1987 graduate of Stanford University, Machtolf was a member of the Cardinal s 1987 College World Series championship team and was an All-CWS selection. A 4-year baseball letterman and 2-year football letterman, Machtolf received his B.A. in history in He received a Master of Education degree in 1990 from Spokane s Whitworth College. Machtolf and his wife Sheila have three sons, David ( ), Steven ( ), and Jack ( ).

8 8 Danny Evans Danny Evans enters his ffi th season as a member of the Gonzaga University coaching staff and will serve as the Bulldogs infi elder coach. Under Evans, the Bulldogs have become one of the top defensive teams in the West Coast Conference and in NCAA Division I. Since 2005, Gonzaga s fi elding percentage has consistently ranked in the top 30 of NCAA Division I institutions as well as the ranking top in the WCC. In 2005, the Bulldogs fi elded a.972 average to rank second in the league and 13th in NCAA Division I. The next season, Gonzaga continued its strong defensive skills, posting a.976 fi elding average, while setting a program and West Coast Conference record, as well as ranking the Bulldogs seventh nationally. Last season the Zags recorded a.971 fi elding percentage to rank 30th in the nation. During West Coast Coference play, Gonzaga posted a.980 average to rank fi rst in the league. The Zags committed only 16 errors in league play, setting a WCC record. Evans has overseen the development of a pair of fomer Bulldogs who are currently playing in the professional ranks - Darin Holcomb and Scott Campbell, both of which were top 15 round draft picks. A 2003 graduate of Gonzaga University, Evans was a 4-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs appearing in 162 games over his career. Evans alternated between shortstop and third base during his career and capped his senior season with a second team All-West Coast Conference honor. In August of 2008, the native of Glendale, Ariz., married the former Kellie Buller, also a Gonzaga graduate. Gary Van Tol Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Former Gonzaga University player and assistant coach Gary Van Tol returned to the Bulldogs program in 2006 for his second stint. Van Tol enters his third year this time around after three years as an assistant coach at the University of Portland where he served as the Pilots pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Van Tol was a 2-year letterwinner at Gonzaga under head coach Steve Hertz, earning fi rst-team All-Pacifi c 10 Conference North honors in He also was Gonzaga s fi rst academic baseball All-American, earning third team honors in Following his playing career Van Tol joined the Bulldogs staff as an assistant coach from prior to accepting his fi rst head coaching job at Centralia College in After one year as the associate head coach at Treasure Valley Community College in 1995, he was promoted to head coach and guided the Chukars to four NJCAA Regional appearances in fi ve years. While at Treasure Valley, 90 percent of his players moved onto 4-year colleges or the professional ranks. Included in that list are former Gonzaga players Nate Gold, the 2002 NCAA home run champion, and Marshall Bratton, a fi rst-team All-WCC selection. During his 18 years of coaching Van Tol has had the opprotunity to coach or manage 39 players who have played professionally, 11 of which have played in the Major Leagues. A native of Pincher Creek, Alberta, Van Tol was a member of the Canadian National Team from Van Tol also played professionally in Holland. Van Tol and his wife Chrissy have four children Gehrig (8), Amaia (6), Peyton (3) and Gibson (born September 12, 2007). Steve Bennett Assistant Coach/Pitching Coach Steve Bennett enters his fourth season as a member of the Gonzaga University coaching staff and will serve as the Bulldogs pitching coach. A 2000 graduate of Gonzaga, Bennett was a 4-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs appearing in 54 games over his career. He earned West Coast Conference Honorable Mention as a freshman, was selected second-team All-WCC as a junior and was drafted by the New York Mets in the 28th round after his senior season. Bennett chose to return to the Bulldogs for his fi fth year where he earned fi rst-team All-WCC. He then went on to play four years in the Mets organization reaching as high as the AA level. In 2007, Bennett served as the Bulldogs pitching coach. During his fi rst season in the position, Gonzaga produced its inaugural West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, third-team All-American and 36th overall draft pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, Clayton Mortensen. The native of Helena, Montana is engaged to Abby Cullen, an assistant volleyball coach for the Bulldogs. Marshall Bratton Director of Baseball Operations Marshall Bratton enters his second season as the Director of Baseball Operations for the Gonzaga University baseball team. A graduate of Gonzaga University, Bratton was a 2-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs during the 2003 and 2004 seasons. He earned All-West Coast Conference All-Academic accolades as a junior and was selected to the All-WCC fi rst team as a designated hitter his senior season. Prior to his career at Gonzaga, Bratton was a NJCAA Academic All-American at Treasure Valley Community College, where he played for current Gonzaga assistant coach, Gary Van Tol. Bratton is currently working on his Master s degree from the School of Business. He is also active with the Spokane South Little League, serving as the treasurer and is employed part-time by ASC Machine Tools, Inc. in Spokane. Dustin Colclough Graduate Assistant Dustin Colclough enters his fi rst season as the Graduate Assistant for the Gonzaga University baseball team. Colclough was a two-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs during the 2006 and 2007 campaigns. As a catcher, Colclough hit at a.276 career clip with 97 hits including 17 doubles with 58 runs batted in. As a senior, Colclough also etched his name into Gonzaga baseball history, hitting the fi rst home run at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Prior to Gonzaga, Colclough played baseball at College of Marin (2004) and San Jose City College in 2006.
