Bay, the first Pittsburgh player and first native Canadian to win the NL award, got 25 of 32 first-place votes and 146 points. Bay hit.282 with 26 homers and 82 RBI. The native of Trail, British Columbia, had the most homers by an NL rookie since Albert Pujols hit 37 in Bay started the season on the disabled list while recovering from surgery on his right shoulder and didn't play his first major league game of the season until May 7. Bay was an All-West Coast Conference first-team pick at Gonzaga in his senior season of 2000, and capped his senior season with 80 hits, 15 home runs, 60 runs scored and a.388 average to rank in the top 10 on the Gonzaga single-season charts in those four categories. Pittsburgh had been the only pre-expansion team without a rookie of the year, with four players finishing second: first baseman Donn Clendenon (1962), second baseman Johnny Ray (1982), pitcher Mike Dunne (1987) and outfielder-first baseman Orlando Merced (1991). Kiel Thibault 2004 WCC Player of the Year Gonzaga University sophomore catcher Kiel Thibault was named the 2004 West Coast Conference Player of the Year. Thibault becomes the second Gonzaga player to win the Player of the Year honor joining Nate Gold who won the award in 2002 after leading the nation with 33 home runs. Jason Bay Outfield Pittsburgh Pirates Thibault finished the season with a.424 batting average to win the West Coast Conference batting title while hitting.432 in league play. Gonzaga finished the regularseason with a record including a mark in WCC action. The.424 average was the second highest in school history and the fifth-best mark in WCC history as the sophomore from Jerome, Idaho, led the conference with 87 hits. In addition to being named the WCC Player of the Year, Thibault was also named the WCC first-team catcher GONZAGA BASEBALL

3 GONZAGA BASEBALL 2005 GONZAGA MAJOR LEAGUERS Lenn Sakata FORMER ZAG HOLDS PLACE IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL HISTORY Leon Cadore will always be a part of Major League baseball history as the former Gonzaga Bulldog pitched the longest game (innings) in Major League history. The date was May 1, 1920, and the 29-year old right-hander faced Joe Oeschger of the Boston Braves at Braves Field. Cadore s team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, scored in the fourth inning and the Braves answered with a run in the fifth and that would be where the scoring would end. Cadore and Oeschger battled to a 1-1 tie when the game was called following the 26th inning due to darkness. Both pitchers pitched complete games in the cold, damp weather, with Cadore allowing 15 hits, five walks and seven strikeouts. The curveball specialist would go on to win a career-high 15 games that season for the Dodgers, including his only World Series start that season against the Cleveland Indians. 4 GONZAGA INDOOR FACILITY GONZAGA INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY In November of 2002 the Gonzaga University baseball program took a big step forward in staying competitive as a school in a Northern climate as the Bulldogs began use of a new indoor baseball practice facility. The new facility contains a team weight room and exercise area along with new pitching machines. Five regulation length and width hitting cages have been erected that allow for live or pitching machine batting practice. Also included are two full-length pitching areas with portable mounds and pitching dummies for simulated practices. The Bulldogs now have the ability to film and view hitting techniques in a state-of-theart video room. Practice nets may be moved back to allow for infielders to take ground balls on the astro-turf surface, all the advantages a Northern climate school needs to win. PLANS UNDERWAY FOR NEW GONZAGA BASEBALL STADIUM Architectural Concept of New Baseball Field Gonzaga s new baseball complex will be a state-ofthe-art facility with an old-time baseball feel. The new stadium will include 2,500 theater-style seats and will incorporate classic brick detailing. Major League player amenities will include a Fieldturf infield, professional candle lighting system and authentic home and visitor dugouts with underground passages to the full-service clubhouses. The estimated $5.1 million project is currently in the fund raising stages and should efforts be successful the new ballpark will be built in phases as monies are donated to the project. The first phase of construction on the new baseball field is scheduled to begin in the spring of

5 GONZAGA BASEBALL 2005 MARK MACHTOLF Head Coach Considered one of the Top 10 rising stars in the Division I coaching ranks by Baseball America in its 2000 publication, Mark Machtolf gets his first head coaching opportunity this season with the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Machtolf, an 11-year assistant at the school, was officially handed the coaching reigns on August 7, 2003, from 24-year head coach Steve Hertz who moved into an administrative position at the school. Mark Machtolf is one of the brightest young baseball coaches in the country who is ready for the opportunity to run his own program. We re glad that opportunity came right here at Gonzaga, mentioned Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth on the hiring of Machtolf. Mark earned this promotion and is being rewarded for what he has helped Gonzaga accomplish and for his loyalty and dedication to not only baseball but the department. Machtolf made an immediate impact on the Bulldogs program guiding GU to a record in West Coast Conference play while placing three players on the All-WCC first team including catcher Kiel Thibault who was named the WCC Player of the Year. Machtolf s team posted a overall record for the 2004 season. Prior to becoming head coach Machtolf s primary responsibilities were working with Zags hitters and coaching outfielders. He also served as Gonzaga s recruiting coordinator, all areas he will continue to oversee as the Bulldogs skipper. Under Machtolf s guidance the Bulldogs have become one of the top power hitting teams in the country. In 2002 the Bulldogs set a school and West Coast Conference record for home runs with 92, finishing 7th in the nation in home runs per game. Gonzaga slugger Nate Gold led the nation with 33 home runs en route to earning first-team All-America honors. In 1999 Gonzaga hitters burst onto the national scene as they smashed several offensive school records including home runs (82), runs scored (455), runs batted in (425) and hits per game (10.75). A 1987 graduate of Stanford University, Machtolf was a member of the Cardinal s 1987 College World Series championship team and was an All-CWS selection. A 4-year baseball letterman and 2-year football letterman Machtolf received his B.A. in history in He received a Master of Education degree in 1990 from Spokane s Whitworth College. Machtolf entered the coaching ranks as the hitting coach at Gonzaga for the season and worked with the Zags until the completion of the 1990 campaign. Following one season as an assistant coach at Whitworth College, Machtolf accepted the head coaching position at Gonzaga Prep High School and coached through the 1995 season. In 1996, Machtolf returned to the Bulldog dugout as a volunteer coach and was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 1998 season. It s every coaches dream to have his own program, but there s something special about becoming the head coach at a place you ve already played a part in developing. The foundation of Zag baseball won t change, but at the same time I will also put my signature on this program. I look forward to the challenge of maintaining the athletic and academic credibility of Bulldog baseball, Machtolf said during the press conference to announce his promotion from associate head coach to head coach. Machtolf and his wife Sheila have three sons, David ( ), Steven ( ) and Jack ( ). MARK MACHTOLF S COLLEGIATE COACHING RECORD YEAR SCHOOL RECORD WCC REC. WCC FIN. 6 GONZAGA ASSISTANT COACHES SCOTT ASAN Assistant Coach Scott Asan enters his fifth season as a member of the Gonzaga coaching staff and will serve as the Bulldogs pitching and catching coach this season. This is Asan s second stint on the Gonzaga staff after working as a graduate assistant coach in Asan left the program in 2001 and returned as the volunteer assistant in 2002 and 2003 coaching the Bulldogs outfielders and catchers. He was hired as a full-time assistant in August, 2003, when Mark Machtolf was promoted as the Bulldogs head coach. A 1999 GU graduate, Asan was a 4-year starter at catcher for the Bulldogs from During his senior season, Asan caught 34 games hitting.306 with three home runs and 20 RBI while earning honorable mention All-West Coast Conference honors. Prior to attending Gonzaga, Asan was a standout high school player at University High School in Spokane. STEVE BENNETT Assistant Coach Steve Bennett enters his first season as a member of the Gonzaga coaching staff and will serve as the Bulldogs pitching coach. A 2000 graduate of Gonzaga University, Bennett was a 4-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs appearing in 54 games over his career. He earned a WCC Honorable Mention as a freshman, was selected second team All-WCC as a junior and was drafted by the New York Mets after his senior season in the 28th round. Bennett chose to return to the Bulldogs for his fifth year where he earned a first team All-WCC. He then went on to play four years in the Mets organization reaching as high as the AA level. Prior to playing at Gonzaga, Bennett played on various summer league baseball teams as there was no high school baseball in Montana. While attending Capital High School in Helena, Mont., he was a All-State selection in basketball. DANNY EVANS Assistant Coach Danny Evans enters his second season as a member of the Gonzaga coaching staff and will serve as the Bulldogs infield coach. A 2003 graduate of Gonzaga University, Evans was a 4-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs appearing in 162 games over his career. Evans alternated between shortstop and third base during his career and capped his senior season with a second team All-West Coast Conference honor. Prior to playing at Gonzaga, Evans was a second-team All-State selection at Deer Valley High School in Glendale, Ariz. 7 GONZAGA BASEBALL 2005 The Gonzaga University baseball team is moving forward, propelled by a talented and versatile group of young Bulldogs. The Zags will return 15 faces for the 2005 season while ushering in 19 newcomers, 13 of them freshmen. GU must also replace a pitching staff that returns only one starter from a team that went and earned a third place finish in the West Coast Conference Coast Division. Gonzaga has the same goal as a team as it does every year, win the WCC championship and make the NCAA Regionals. Second-year head coach Mark Machtolf is excited about this season's squad and believes he has scheduled well enough that if the Bulldogs don't win the WCC championship and do well in their non-conference games they will have a good chance at receiving an at-large bid for the regionals. "I think that you should always shoot to go to Omaha," said Machtolf. "If you don't then you are selling your players short." Despite having a pitching roster laden with underclassmen, the Zags have a strong nucleus of position players returning including their top three hitters from last season. Making their return for the Zags will be the lone senior on the team, rightfielder Jeff Culpepper, third baseman Bobby Carlson and the reigning WCC Player of the Year in catcher Kiel Thibault. With these three returning the Bulldogs should provide plenty of run support for their young pitching rotation. On the mound the Bulldogs return one starting pitcher from a year ago in junior Patrick Donovan, a product of Spokane's North Central High. The coaching staff is confident he will be a valuable leader for the newcomers. According to Machtolf, Donovan threw with a little soreness in the fall, but figures he'll compete for time in the starting rotation. Another probable starter for the Bulldogs could be junior college transfer Jay Bryner. While pitching two seasons at Bellevue Community College he was an All-Conference selection both years and in 2004 he posted a 7-2 record with an ERA of 1.01 and 85 strikeouts. The southpaw has impressed the coaching staff as they foresee him as being a possible number one starter. Sophomore Bobby McEwen is making his presence felt on the mound as well. McEwen saw little action last season, but the coaching staff believes he has made huge improvements and will be a value to this season's squad. In 2004 McEwen posted an 0-3 record in 12 appearances while recording 16 strikeouts and an ERA of in 17 innings of work. "Bobby was a surprise to us," said Machtolf. "He struggled a bit last season, but I think he made the necessary adjustments and will be really productive on the mound for us." Other newcomers that have peeked the interest of the coaching staff are sophomore transfer Alan Cannell and freshman transfer Brandon Harmon. These two could be vying for time as starters. One of the first out of the bullpen could be junior Nate Williams who posted a 2-1 record with a 5.85 ERA, GONZAGA BASEBALL OUTLOOK Jackson Brennan Patrick Donovan strikeouts and recorded two saves last season. Williams will be looked upon to provide leadership to the newcomers. Sophomore Chris Albrecht, junior Josh Monroe, freshman left hander Matt Wickswat and freshman Brian Ouellette will round out the bullpen for the Bulldogs. "Williams has been really reliable for us in the past and he could even be one of our closers this season," said Machtolf. Wickswat, who posted a 10-0 record with a 2.00 ERA and 80 strikeouts during his senior year in high school, has shown lots of promise in the fall and the coaches believe he will be a contributor if he continues to progress. Albrecht, who posted a 1-1 record with an ERA of 7.71 with 23 strikeouts in 2004, has also shown promise in the fall as the coaches believe his numbers last season don't reflect his true presence on the mound. Although Monroe will see time in the bullpen, the coaches haven't ruled him out of being a possible starter for the Bulldogs. Behind the plate for the Zags will be Thibault, who continues get better both offensively and defensively, according to Machtolf. "He is a great leader for the younger guys," said Machtolf. "Offensively he will hit for more power and have a higher average. Defensively I expect him to have another great year as he is physically stronger then he was last season." Last season Thibault placed himself second alltime in the Gonzaga record books for single-season batting average with a.424 average. His average placed him eighth in the NCAA last season and fifth in the WCC single-season batting record books. Thibault also recorded a team leading 87 hits, while recording 35 RBI. Backing up Thibault will be Nick Merriman, a product of Jesuit High School and Dan Ramsey, who was twice named to the All-CIF team. Although Machtolf said Ramsey could still redshirt as a freshman. The Bulldogs infield will look a little different than last season as some newcomers have made their case for starting positions. At third base the coaches are excited about freshman Darin Holcomb and believe that he is not only a good fielder, but a great hitting prospect as well. Players also competing for time at third and second base are Matt Hibbits and Shane Hoey. "Hibbits and Hoey will be used as utility players, and could also be competing for time in the designated hitter spot," said Machtolf. Hoey, a product of Blanchet High School, hit over.400 in three of his four years in high school and also made an appearance in the State All-Star game. The coaches believe that he is a versatile player and could be battling for time in the outfield as well. Hibbits also showed his ability to hit for a high average while playing at Grant High School. He hit over.400 during his junior and senior seasons and helped his team reach the 4A state quarterfinals during his senior campaign. Hibbits could also be vying for time in the outfield as well as third base. Aaron McGuinness appears to have locked down the starting shortstop job. McGuinness will look to help with the offense and improve upon his.242 batting average from a year ago. McGuinness recorded 70 put outs and 147 assists while posting a.900 fielding percentage. At second base the Bulldogs will look to a junior college transfer from Central Arizona Community College, Scott Campbell. The New Zealand native will be a welcome bat to the Zags offense as he hit.424 last season at Central Arizona. Carlson led the Zags in home runs last season with eight, earning first-team All-WCC honors. This season he will be moving from his more natural position of third base to the other corner at first base. "We are going to move him (Carlson) to first base," said Machtolf. "He is doing a good job at learning the position and we see him hitting somewhere in the middle of our order." Last season Carlson was second on the team in hitting with a.362 average. He also recorded 15 doubles and was second on the team in RBI with 44. The Zags outfield has yet to be solidified, but there is a plethora of talent for Machtolf to choose from. Freshman Shawn Wayt is a converted first basemen and appears to be the leading candidate in left field. The coaches also see him as adding significantly to the offensive production of the Bulldogs. He could also figure in the plans at designated hitter. While playing baseball at Westview High School in Portland, Ore. he hit.513 during his senior season. Junior Will Ayala, the nephew of former Gonzaga pitcher Warren Ayala ( ), and sophomore Austin Highberger from Stayton, Ore, will also be vying for time in left and right field. All-American candidate Culpepper will move to a new position. Last season he spent the season as the Bulldogs starting first baseman, and now is making the move to right field. Along with his strong bat the coaching staff looks for him to do a great job in the outfield. "I think he will hit with more power and have a higher average just like Thibault," Machtolf said about Culpepper. "He can also move around to play several different positions in the field for us." In center field the Zags welcome back their leadoff hitter from a year ago, Jackson Brennan. Machtolf said the return of Jackson Brennan gives the Bulldogs a solid leadoff hitter. Last year he hit.308 with an on-base percentage of.457 prior to suffering a season ending injury against the University of Washington. Machtolf said the success of this year's team might depend a great deal on the new players. "If some of our young players progress like we anticipate they will then we should be able to compete on a daily basis," Machtolf said. "I think this team has a lot of mental toughness and won't fall victim to adversity, but a lot of them have never played in a Division I game, either. They'll need to mature quickly. If they do, then I think we'll come together as a team." GONZAGA SEASON OUTLOOK
