The Bulldogs face the host Broncs on Thursday evening followed by games against Lamar University, Texas State University and the University of Northern Colorado. This marks one of the longest road trips the Bulldogs have ever made to open a season as they will travel some 2,300 miles for the first pitch of the season. Gonzaga has opened its season in Arizona the last three years playing in either the Surprise Coca- Cola Baseball Classic or Arizona State Bob Schaefer Memorial Tournament. HEAD COACH MARK MACHTOLF: Mark Machtolf enters his third season as the Bulldogs head coach and 14th year as a member of the Gonzaga baseball staff. Following an 11-year stint as an assistant coach, Machtolf was handed the head coaching reigns on August 7, 2003 when former head coach Steve Hertz moved into an adminstrative position with the GU athletic department. Machtolf has posted a record at Gonzaga including a mark in West Coast Conference games. During his first two years he led the Bulldogs to consecutive third place finishes in the WCC Coast Division and produced the WCC Player of the Year in A 1987 graduate of Stanford University, Machtolf was a member of Stanford s 1987 College World Series championship team and was an All-CWS selection. BULLDOGS COACHING STAFF: Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf added for Gonzaga University player Gary Van Tol as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs staff. Van Tol replaced Scott Asan and will serve as the Bulldogs pitching coach. Van Tol joined the Bulldogs after three years as an assistant coach at the University of Portland. Van Tol played two seasons for the Bulldogs earning All-Pacific-10 Conference North honors in He joins former Bulldogs Danny Evans and Steve Bennett who return from last year s coaching staff.

This will be the first meeting between the schools as Series Record UTPA plays host to the multiple team tournament. First Meeting The Broncs were last season playing as an NCAA Division I Independent. Outfielder Louis Alamia is the team s top returning player, hitting.344 last season with 21 RBI. LAMAR CARDINALS: The Bulldogs face the first of two Southland 2005 Record: Conference opponents when they square off with 38-23, Southland Lamar University on Friday. The Cardinals were Series Record last season and missed the NCAA First Meeting Tournament with a second place finish in the SLC. Lamar was in the tournament field in Catcher Michael Ambort has been named to several preseason All-America teams with a.336 average, 18 home runs and 65 RBI. TEXAS STATE BOBCATS: Gonzaga plays Southland Conference member 2005 Record: Texas State University on Saturday in the first 32-26, Southland meeting between the two schools. TSU was Series Record last season, finishing third in the SLC with a 15- First Meeting 12 mark. The team lost its two top pitchers from last season after the team posted a 4.36 team ERA last year. Right-handers Scott Moore and B.J. Boening are two of the top returning relief pitchers from last year s staff, Moore posting a team best four saves. NORTHERN COLORADO BEARS: Gonzaga concludes play at the Texas 2005 Record: Pan American Tournament with a Sunday matchup with Northern Colorado. The Bears play as an Series Record NCAA Division I Independent after making the UNC leads 2-1 jump from the NCAA Division II ranks two years ago. The team was last year with outfielder Grady Gorman the Bears top returning hitter at.298, 3 home runs and 21 RBI. Northern Colorado owns a 2-1 series advantage over the Bulldogs winning two of three games in the 1973 NCAA District Championships. WEST COAST CONFERENCE FORMAT CHANGE: The West Coast Conference has undergone a format change for the 2006 baseball season. Gone are the two divisions and 30 game conference schedule. Teams will now play a 3-game series with each conference school for a 21-game WCC slate. The top teams will then play a best two-out-of-three series to determine the WCC automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament field. This season Gonzaga will play four WCC series at home and three WCC series on the road. Gonzaga won 52 percent of its games in the two division format that was in place from the 1999 season through last year. Gonzaga posted a record including winning the Coast Division championship in ONE MORE YEAR AT AVISTA: Gonzaga University will play one more season at Avista Stadium as the Bulldogs conclude fund raising for a new oncampus baseball stadium. Construction is expected to begin in early Spring with the new stadium located adjacent to the Gonzaga Law School and approximately 200 yards from the previous baseball stadium. Gonzaga has played at off-campus sites since the middle of the 2003 season when August/A.R.T. Stadium was cleared to make way for the new McCarthey Athletic Center.

Departed are outfielder Jeff Culpepper and Kiel Thibault. Culpepper was a fifth-year senior that was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. Thibault, the 2004 WCC Player of the Year as a sophomore, turned pro after being drafted in the 9th round by the Kansas City Royals. ALL-WCC PLAYERS RETURN: Gonzaga will again have the services of five All-WCC players as the Bulldogs prepare for the 2006 season. Returning for the Bulldogs are first-team selection Scott Campbell, second team honorees Bobby Carlson and Darin Holcomb and honorable mention selections Patrick Donovan and Josh Monroe. All five players are once again expected to be vital parts to the Bulldogs success this season. NEW PITCHERS TO GET A LOOK THIS WEEKEND: Gonzaga will open the first weekend of competition with two new pitchers expected to get starts this weekend. Slate to pitch for the Bulldogs this opening weekend are right-handers Clayton Mortensen, Bobby McEwen and Matt Fields. Left-handed senior Patrick Donovan is the other projected Bulldogs starter. Mortensen is a junior college transfer from Treasure Valley CC where he was 7-5 last season with a 2.36 ERA. Fields is redshirt freshman from Lake Stevens HS where he was 15-2 during his final two years of high school competition. He appeared in four games last season for Gonzaga before taking a medical redshirt. McEwen was 1-4 in 10 starts last season for the Bulldogs while Donovan earned All-WCC honorable mention honors with a 6-7 record and 3.22 ERA. INFLUENCE AT THE HOT CORNER: Darin Holcomb returns for the Bulldogs at third base after earning 52 starts at the hot corner as a true freshman. Holcomb ranked fourth on the Gonzaga squad with a.313 average while hitting 15 doubles with 31 RBI. He was a second-team All-WCC selection and ranked first on the Bulldogs squad with 20- multi-hit games. TOP HITTER RETURNING: Second baseman Scott Campbell returns at second base for the Bulldogs after leading the team with a.332 average last season. Campbell started all 54 games for Gonzaga with 10 doubles and 30 RBI. He was Gonzaga s lone first-team All-WCC honoree hitting.357 in league action. Campbell is a native of New Zealand and a member of the New Zealand Olympic Development Program. He enters the 2006 season with a four-game hitting streak intact after putting together a 10-game hitting streak last season.

Pepperdine (6) San Diego (2) San Francisco LMU Gonzaga Santa Clara Saint Mary s Portland (first place votes) BASEBALL EARLY SIGNEES: Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf signed three players during the fall early signing period. Signing National Letters of Intent were Bryan Barnes, Mark Ellis and Sebastian Herve. Barnes is a middle infielder at Mountlake Terrace High. Ellis is middle infielder at Archbishop Carney Regional Secondary School in British Columbia. Herve, a native of France, is an outfielder at Cochise CC in Arizona. TOP RBI MAN BACK: First baseman Bobby Carlson returns for his senior season after leading the Bulldogs with 15 multiple RBI games last season. Carlson led the WCC with 57 RBI which was tied for the seventh best single-season output in Bulldogs history matching Gordon Corder s 2003 mark. Carlson enters the season with 32 career doubles and a.302 career average. He needs five doubles to crack the Bulldogs career Top 10 for doubles. Bill Hainline ( ) is currently 10th with 37 career two-baggers. INFIELD INTACT: Gonzaga returns all four starters from last years infield as Bobby Carlson returns at first, Scott Campbell at second, Aaron McGuinness at short and Darin Holcomb at third. Gonzaga had a record setting season on defense last year fielding.972 for a new school mark. The Bulldogs committed only 60 errors all season with only two players having 10 or more errors on the year. Gonzaga tied with nine other schools to rank 13th in the NCAA in fielding percentage. BATTLE BEHIND THE DISH: Gonzaga must once again find a new signal caller behind the plate after former WCC Player of the Year Kiel Thibault joined the Kansas City Royals organization following his junior season. Gonzaga had four players battling for the position in fall practice with the decision on which player may take a bulk of the load still up in the air. Gonzaga currently has six catchers on the roster but may redshirt two freshman catchers. The four catchers listed as possibles for the opening weekend are Dustin Colclough, Dan Ramsay, Tyson Van Winkle and Nick Merriman. Ramsay redshirted at Gonzaga last season while Merriman appeared in 10 games in a reserve role. Van Winkle is a freshman from Hudson s Bay High in Vancouver, Wash., while Colclough is a junior college transfer from San Jose CC. The other two freshman catchers on the GU roster are Tom Johnson (Littleton, CO) and Michael Stobie (Yakima, WA). 18 STRAIGHT ON THE ROAD: Gonzaga will play its first 18 games on the road this season as the Bulldogs once again face life as a cold climate school. Gonzaga s first home games will be a two-game series with Chicago State University on March 10 & 11. Gonzaga s opening road trip includes stops in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Seattle and Lewiston, Idaho. The Bulldogs do have 21 home games scheduled this year at Avista Stadium. Last season Gonzaga played its first 19 games on the road with a series against Utah Valley State in Pasco, Wash., serving as a home set for the Bulldogs in the middle of those 19 games. RELIEF RETURNS IN 2006: Gonzaga returns two of its top relief pitchers from last season with right-handers Brandon Harmon and Nate Williams back on-board this season. Harmon led the Bulldogs with 5 saves last season, making 21 relief appearances with a 5.73 ERA. Harmon also posted a 2-1 record in 33 innings of work. Williams has been a steady force in the Gonzaga bullpen for the last three seasons with 5 career saves. Last year he made 19 relief appearances with 3 saves and a 3-2 record in 34 innings. Williams ranked second on the staff with a 3.18 ERA. BULLDOGS PICKED FIFTH IN WCC: Gonzaga was tabbed to finish fifth in the West Coast Conference in a preseason poll of league coaches. The Bulldogs had 26 total points, finishing six points behind Loyola Marymount for fourth place. Pepperdine received six first-place votes and 48 total points for first place while San Diego was second with 42 points and two first-place votes.
