UNC Wilmington George Mason 11 THE PRIDE PICKED TO WIN EIGHTH STRAIGHT CAA TITLE: For the second year in a row, was the unanimous pick to collect the 2009 CAA softball title based on the votes by the league s eight head coaches., the seven time conference champion, received all possible first-place votes as coaches weren t allow to vote for their own team. The Pride finished atop the poll with 49 points., last year s runner-up due to a 3-0 loss to the Pride, received one first-place vote and finished second in the poll with 42 points. Georgia State was picked third receiving 37 points, while and followed with 29 and 28 points, respectively. and UNC Wilmington tied for sixth ahead of George Mason. CONFERENCE NOTES: CAA SOFTBALL REPORT: won the regular season with a 14-3 conference record and earned the right to host the 2009 CAA Softball Championship for the seventh time in eight years. Fourth-seeded went 3-0 in the tournament to dethrone the Pride and capture its first CAA Softball Championship in school history. For the first time in CAA Softball Championship history, a new champion was crowned as had won seven straight CAA titles since joining the league. The 11-title streak was the longest in NCAA Division I softball history, eclipsing the previous record of nine held by Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 ( ). DUKES IN KNOXVILLE FOR NCAA TOURNAMENT: advanced to the Knoxville Regional for first-round action of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Dukes fell to #13 Tennessee, 4-3, in the opening round. The regions other two participants, Jacksonville State (39-13) and Nebraska (34-17), will play the region s opening game at 3:30 p.m. NFCA FIRST-TEAM ALL-REGION: The CAA had six players receive First-Team All-Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on May 14. The Softball team had three players in junior first baseman Michele DePasquale, senior second baseman Casey Fee, and senior pitcher Kayleigh Lotti named first-team All-Northeast Region by the NFCA, while catcher Ashley Botelho was also named to the All-Northeast first team. pitcher Shannon Johnston and second baseman Mindy Bean were named to the first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration. CAA SOFTBALL FINISHES AT 15 IN NCAA RPI: The CAA finished the season ranked 15th in the NCAA RPI Rankings. completed the season ranked 60, while followed closed behind at 64. Georgia State wrapped up the season ranked 73, while edged the top 100 at 102. (149), (180), UNC Wilmington (199) and George Mason (215) also faced tough components to assist a conference ranking of 15 out of 31 leagues. CAA SOFTBALL INDIVIDUALS RANKED IN NCAA STATS: Georgia State s Holly Willis finished a top all Division I softball players averaging just over half a sacrifice hit per game (.54). s Michele DePasquale ranked as the second toughest player to strike out, while Carley Hughes of UNC Wilmington followed at sixth. s Casey Fee was eight posting six triples on the year. She also ranked eight in triples per game (0.13). The Pride s Kayleigh Lotti posted a 1.27 earned run average which was the 14th best among NCAA student-athletes. CAA SOFTBALL TEAMS RANKED IN NCAA STATS: The Dukes completed the season with a team ERA of 1.76, which ranked 16th among all Division I teams. followed close behind at 29th with a team ERA of The Dukes also ranked in the top 30 in stolen bases per game at 24th with 1.67 per outing. **Complete Rankings Listing is attached in the back of the PDF.**

3 CAA FINAL SOFTBALL REPORT CAA SOFTBALL ACCOLADES junior first baseman Michele De- Pasquale was selected as the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association Softball Player of the Year by a vote of the league s eight head coaches. Her honor highlights this year s All-CAA awards, which were presented Tuesday night on the campus of University, which will host the 2009 CAA Softball Championship. Joining DePasquale as major award winners were senior Kayleigh Lotti, who was selected as the Pitcher of the Year for the third straight season, Georgia State freshman pitcher Alana Thomas, who was honored as the Rookie of the Year, and s Bill Edwards, who was voted CAA Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. DePasquale ranked second in the league with a.370 batting average and completed the regular season with 54 hits and 30 runs batted in. The junior first baseman batted.421 against conference foes and drove in a league-best 17 runs. DePasquale is the nation s second toughest player to strike out, fanning only three times in 146 at-bats. She is the third player in the past five seasons to receive CAA Player of the Year honors. Lotti once again dominated from the circle, posting an 18-7 overall record with one save and a league-best 1.29 earned run average. The senior tossed innings and struck out a conference-high 221 batters. Opponents batted only.172 against her this season. Lotti was perfect in the circle during CAA play with an 11-0 record and a 0.27 ERA during 78 innings of work. The senior gave up just three earned runs in league action and struck out 97 batters. Thomas turned in an impressive rookie campaign for the Panthers with a 12-6 overall record in 121 innings of work. She completed the regular season with a 2.78 ERA and struck out 36 batters. Thomas tossed 11 complete games and recorded four shutouts in her 23 appearances. Currently in his 20th season at the helm of the Pride, Edwards led to its seventh CAA regular season title in eight years with a 14-3 conference mark. The Pride lost its three conference contests by a total of just five runs. After starting the season 5-11, Edwards guided to 21 wins in its next 26 contests. The Pride has captured an NCAA-record 11 straight conference tournament titles under Edwards and reached the NCAA regional finals three times. It is his second CAA Coach of the Year honor.
