1 NEWSLETTER May 2004 From the President Well here we are into spring. Summer will soon be here. The horseshoes will be clanging, and there s lots of fun ahead. There are lots of tournaments to take in again this year. Hope to see some of you at the Ontario Doubles and Singles. If anyone is planning to take in the Canadian this year, July 13 th to 17 th in Victoria B.C., represent Ontario well. Saying that, I will try to explain Years before I was involved with Horseshoe Ontario, the governing body Horseshoe Canada came up with a dress code for players pitching in the Canadian Championships. Each province was given colours they were to wear in the parade of colours and while pitching. Ontario s colours are powder blue and white. Some of the provinces really look sharp when all dressed in their colours. A lot of our people have not known this request by Horseshoe Canada. Hope this will help inform and encourage our players to wear Ontario s colours at the Canadian Championships. Every year Horseshoe Canada publishes a Horseshoe Canada Yearbook by Andre Leclere. In it is information and results of tournaments on the Canadian and provinces. We need more material put in this yearbook by Ontario. If you would like your tournament, your club play or interesting story or picture to be included give it to Tami Becker. Tami is in charge of material for the yearbook. Looking forward to seeing you around the horseshoe courts, thanks for listening. Charlie Hastings President, Horseshoe Ontario FLYING TO VICTORIA? It is airli ne poli cy that you mus t pac k your horseshoes and other related items into your luggage to be checked into baggage. You cannot take your horseshoes with you as part of your carryon luggage. We are pleased to introduce our new MessageBoard, with no banner advertising and no pop-up windows! The new board is a lot more userfriendly with many added features and functionality. This new discussion forum requires everyone to register before being able to post any new topics or replies. Once you register, you must activate your account by clicking on the link you will receive at the address you provide in your registration. We trust you will like the new MessageBoard as much as we do. As always, be professional in your posts and have fun. Page 1 May 2004

9 On February 27, 2004 Dean McLaughlin of Oshawa, Ontario passed away. Dean was born March 7, At the age of 17 Dean became the youngest Canadian to win the Canadian Championship in Dean s career is one of the longest and most illustrious. Besides winning 12 Canadian titles and 7 Provincial titles, Dean won the North American championship in 1960 and in 1967 put on one of the best performances ever on Canadian soil. Thirty-six years separate his first Canadian title in 1938 at the age of 17, from his last in 1974 at age 53. Dean held a world record of 91.9% for 5 consecutive games. He was inducted into the Horseshoe Ontario Hall of in 1988, the Horseshoe Canadian Hall of Fame in 1987 and the NHPA Hall of Fame in The right-handed pitcher, Dean would pitch a turn and a quarter up to 1953 when he started to pitch a turn and three-quarters. His best with the turn and a quarter was 79.6% in 1950 and with the turn and three-quarters was 83.8%. Only Walter Ray Williams has shot better with both turns in the 1990 s. This is an account of the 1938 Dominion Championship. Gains Title But Loses Overcoat. In the almost deserted coliseum of the Royal Winter Fair, Dean McLaughlin won the Dominion horseshoe pitching championship but lost an overcoat. While they looked for the 17 year old Oshawa automobile worker to present the trophy to him, he was searching through tiers of seats for the overcoat he had laid aside while he won the singles crown. Someone had taken it while the youngster was beating the county s best at heaving cast-iron and the champion, clutching the big trophy, had to travel 30 miles home without a coat. But he still was happy. In the picture above, Dean is holding the Championship Trophy he won on August 29, The Hamilton Spectator reported, Champion Rings 92% to Sweep Horseshoe Honors. In winning the Canadian Championship, statisticians claim that Dean McLaughlin probably walked 16 miles between pegs and lifted about 1800 pounds. Accuracy has probably improved also. McLaughlin had a 92% ringer average to defeat defending champion Elmer Hohl. It was the first time the horseshoe pitching championships had been held in Hamilton. For the past 25 years they had been staged at the CNE grounds in Toronto. In recalling that Championship in later years Dean said, I held the shoe a certain way that day, and the funny thing is I ve never found that same method since. You can read more about Dean s accomplishments in the History of Horseshoe Pitching in Canada by Andre Leclerc. Copies this is book can be purchased from Jean Markle or online at under merchandise. Excerpts for this article came from this book.

10 The 2004 season is upon us, and for some members the season has already started. May this year be special to one and all, and may you reach that elusive higher level of ability, and may you enjoy every day and COACHES CORNER by Al Springall, National Certified Coach every game played. If you reach for a high level you must first set a reasonable goal that can be attainable with a positive attitude and the use of positive thoughts, such as I can, I shall, I will. I would suggest a reasonable increase to your average would be a 3, 4, or 5% increase is a goal to reach, and would be considered commendable. It would take determination, hard work and a positive attitude on ones part, I can do it; I will do it. Don t fall into thinking negative thoughts when ringers seem to be close but not on. It s easy to say, I can t this game, I give up, I don t care, these thoughts will vanish if you maintain the right positive attitude. Just a word about court courtesy. Always respect your opponent, shake his hand at the start of the game and again after the game is over. Compliment him win or lose, not too many people will remember if you have a bad game, but they will remember how you conducted yourself during and after the game for a long time. Be respectful to officials, committees and executive members, they are doing their jobs, not for money but for the love of the game. I will be playing again this year, and look forward to meeting old friends made over the past years and making new ones. Good luck to all, I will look for you on the courts The 7 th ANNUAL MERV LICHTY MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT K. W.
