Times and dates subject to change W&M NEWS AND NOTES The Green and Gold is fresh off its first Colonial Athletic Association series win after taking the first two from Towson last weekend. W&M escaped with a pair of one-run wins in a doubleheader sweep on Friday to clinch the three-game set. The Tribe jumped out to a 5-0 lead, before being force to hold off furious Towson rally in both victories. Sophomore Wade Strain was responsible for saving both CAA wins, collecting three in total last week. The closer out of Burke, Va., secured an 11-inning victory at Big Ten member Maryland on April 3. Strain's six saves rank third-best in the league. He ties teammate Charlie Fletcher for most appearances (18) in the association and shares the lead in most games finished (14) with UNCW's Clark Cota. Big swings and ideal wind conditions helped the Tribe blast three home runs in its series opener with Towson. The effort ties 13th in school history, and the last time W&M homered three times was on April 24, 2011 against VCU. Smith launched a solo bomb, junior Zach Pearson smoked a two-rbi homer and classmate Colin Lipke sent a three-rbi blast out of the park. McDermott is one of just nine CAA players to triple at least two times this year. As the only freshman to start every game, McDermott is third-best on the team in hits (30) and batting average (.259). The second baseman has tallied seven multi-hit games and ties first for the longest reached base streak (10). W&M has played 63 percent of its games right here in Williamsburg. Since the month of March, the Tribe has posted a 9-7 (.562) mark at Plumeri Park and claimed three of its four weekend series. However, W&M will be on the road in 13 of its last 21 games. A quick start is critical for the Tribe in winning games. The Green and Gold is 8-1 when it scores in the first inning and 12-4 in scoring the first run of a game. W&M has also displayed the ability to maintain a lead with a 10-3 mark when ahead after six innings. In addition, the Tribe also improved to 5-2 in night games and 3-3 in extra innings. For those keeping track all season, it is not a surprise that senior Charlie Fletcher is right around the corner from becoming the program's new appearance leader. After logging 2.2 innings vs. Towson, Fletcher is only three calls away from breaking the record with 94 under his belt. He currently ties seventh in the CAA record books as well. Senior CLASS Award Candidate Ryan Hall recently became one of the top hitters in program history, tying 15th all-time with 217. He is also top 15 at W&M in most doubles (t-8th), games started (8th), at bats (8th), walks (7th), runs scored (11th), and sacrifice flies (13th). For the season, Hall is second-best in the CAA and tied 37th in the NCAA with 12 doubles. Rookie Justin Pearson will make his first career start against the Monarchs on Tuesday. Pearson has made eight appearances leading up to the mid-week nod and logged 11.2 innings of work. The lefty has strikeout five and allowed five earned runs on 12 hits in owning a 3.86 ERA. Also, Pearson have given up just one earned run in his last four appearances. Relief pitcher Michael Toner is enjoying a standout senior season with the Green and Gold. He has notched career-highs in appearances (14), innings pitched (23.2), and strikeouts (30). The Cummings, Ga., native has allowed just seven earned runs on 22 hits for a 2.66 ERA. He also pitched in a shutout against ETSU (March 16). W&M will play against another school from the Commonwealth 12 times in The Tribe plays VCU (L, 4-3), No. 18 Virginia (L, 4-3), Radford (L, 2-1; W, 3-2), Old Dominion (5-2; April 10), James Madison (April 13-15), Norfolk State (April 17), Richmond (April 24), and Virginia Tech (May 15). So far, the Green and Gold is 2-3 versus in-state rivals. Three former Tribe players in the pros have received their minor-league assignments, all of them drafted last year. After helping the rookie level Elizabethton Twins capture a league title last summer, Nick Brown '17 will start his second season pitching for the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Parent Club: Minnesota Twins). Third round draft pick Nick Raquet will hurl for the Hagerstown Suns (Parent Club: Washington Nationals), while fifth rounder Cullen Large was assigned to the Lansing Lugnuts (Parent Club: Toronto Blue Jays). A trio of Tribe Baseball players earned preseason recognition from the Colonial Athletic Association, highlighted by sophomore Brandon Raquet making the All-Conference Team. Hall and Smith both received Honorable Mention distinctions. In the predicted order of finish, the Tribe tied fifth with Elon with 37 points. UNCW (six first-place votes) is the preseason favorite, followed by Delaware (three first-place votes) and College of Charleston rounding out the top three.

Wife: Karen Murphy Children: Connor (4) Education North Carolina, 1976 Coaching Career William and Mary (2013-P) CAREER HIGHLIGHTS 2014 CAA Coach of the Year 2014 CAA Regular Season Champs 2016 CAA Tournament Champs 2016 NCAA Regional Final Appearance 2016 VaSID Coach of the Year Three 30-plus win seasons Nine MLB Draft Picks Two National Award Semifinalists 22 All-Conference Players STAFF Brian Casey - Assistant Coach (sixth season) Pat McKenna - Assistant Coach (second season) Chad Marshall - Volunteer Assts. (second season) Brian Murphy was named head coach of the Tribe baseball program on Dec. 3, 2013, and enters his fifth season as the Tribe's head coach. It will be his sixth season in Williamsburg, after spending one season as the Tribe's top assistant coach. The former one-year assistant guided the Green and Gold to three 30-plus win seasons, a NCAA Regional Final appearances and a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament bid each season in his first four years as the skipper. Before his promotion, Murphy helped the Tribe earn its first-ever NCAA Tournament at-large bid and win its first regional games in school history on the strength of a record-setting 39-win season in He made a seamless transition to head coach the following year as W&M secured its first-ever regular season conference title, culminating in CAA Coach of the Year honors. A couple seasons later, W&M captured its first CAA tournament championship since 2001 en route to reaching the NCAA Regional Final for the second time in a four-year span. In 2017, a third-place finish in the CAA standings allowed W&M to make its fifth consecutive postseason appearance, which is a program-best since qualifying started for the CAA Baseball Tournament. Murphy secured his 100th career victory mid-way through the season after the Tribe edged conference rival UNCW, 10-9, on March 26. At the end of the regular season, the Green and Gold landed five players on the all-conference teams, highlighted by junior Cullen Large receiving All-CAA First Team accolades. Senior Ryder Miconi, who was tabbed All-CAA Third Team, continued to excel in the classroom as he repeated as CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year. In addition, All-CAA second teamer Brandon Raquet was named to Collegiate Baseball s Freshman All-American Team. Murphy also helped produced a draft class of at least three W&M players for the fifth time in program history. Redshirt sophomore Nick Raquet became the third-highest all-time MLB draft pick by getting selected in the third round by the Washington Nationals, Large was chosen in the fifth round by the Toronto Blue Jays and senior Nick Brown was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the 32nd round. It was the second time in program history that two players were taken inside the first five rounds of the MLB Draft. The 2016 season will go down as one of the most memorable seasons in program history. Down 8-1 in what looked like its final at-bat of the season, the Tribe answered with seven runs in the ninth and sparked a two-week run for the ages. Following a 27-hour rain delay, W&M went onto win the first CAA Championship game in 12 innings, before senior Josh Smith s grand-slam homer in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted them to the CAA Tournament crown and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA Regional, the Tribe, which fell in its first game, knocked out Bryant and defending national champion Virginia on its way to its second Regional Final in four seasons. When all was said and done the Green and Gold won six elimination games against Northeastern, College of Charleston, UNCW (twice), Bryant, and Virginia. For his efforts, Murphy was named VaSID Coach of the Year. Individually, he helped lead six Tribe players to all-conference awards, including senior Charley Gould, junior Ryder Miconi, and sophomore Ryan Hall, who were named to the second team. Miconi was rewarded for his hard work in the classroom by being named the CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year. Gould became the 35th player in school history to be drafted when the Oakland Athletics drafted him in the 26th round. It was the fifth straight season that the Tribe had a player selected in the MLB Draft. Throughout his stint in the W&M dugout, Murphy has mentored a total of nine MLB Draft picks, two national award semifinalists and 22 all-conference players. Michael Katz ( ), who garnered multiple All-American honors, was tabbed a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist in Additionally, Katz and Charley Gould ( ) were just two of three players in program history to become Dick Howser Trophy semifinalists, representing W&M on the prestigious list in back-to-back years ( 14 & 15). Murphy also helped develop a quartet of record-setting athletes. Under his watch, three pitching records were shattered as John Farrell ( ) set a new single-season wins standard (11), Jason Inghram ( ) replaced the school s all-time wins mark (26) and Joseph Gaouette ( ) broke the career saves record (18). Furthermore, Katz eclipsed the single-season RBI ledger (75). The Easton Mass. native, who enters his sixth season with the Tribe baseball program, after spending threeseasons at Ivy League school Brown. While at Brown, Murphy served as the Bears recruiting coordinator and hitting coach. During his three-year tenure in Providence, R.I., Murphy mentored 10 All-Ivy League selections. Prior to his time with the Bears, Murphy was an assistant at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., ( ) where he was the recruiting director for the Bulldogs. His on the field responsibilities at Bryant included overseeing the catchers, outfielders and batting. In 2008, he was a member of a Bulldog squad that captured the Northeast-10 Championship. His tenure at Bryant was highlighted by 132 victories, two NCAA Tournament Regional final appearances and a school-record 42 wins in At the plate, Bryant improved every season in batting average and runs per game under Murphy's tutelage. In 2004 and 2005, Murphy served as an assistant at Wheaton College in Norton, Ma. While coaching at Wheaton, Murphy's coaching engagement centered on the Lyons' hitting approach and catchers. The Lyons captured two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) titles and made it all the way to the 2005 NCAA New England Regional finals during Murphy's two seasons. Murphy has summer coaching experience in the Cape Cod League and the Northwoods League. Murphy served as the hitting coach for the CCBL's Hyannis Mets during the summers of 2005 and In 2008, he was the Head Coach of the Battle Creek (MI) Bombers of the Northwoods League.
