2 About Bloomsburg A Few Facts About Bloomsburg... Enrollment Total enrollment is over 8,040, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields. Faculty With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. Governance is through the State System of Higher Education s Board of Governors and through the university s Council of Trustees. Degrees Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees,18 master s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Financial Aid About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,026 per year. Cost About $5,358 per year for Pennsylvania residents tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans, $13, 396 for non-residents. Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education. Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 19 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it s a busy place with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division I wrestling and II athletic programs and a popular recreation center. The university s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, offcampus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town. The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC. School Colors, Mascot The school colors, originally lemon and garnet, have been maroon and gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole. 2

5 Head Coach Mike Collins The Collins File Bloomsburg University s 16th head coach St. Joseph s University, 95 Mike Collins Head Coach Bloomsburg University Head Coach Record PSAC Total Binghamton University Assistant Coach Record America East Total Keystone College Head Coach W-L , Region 19 Runner Up , Region 19 Runner Up Total Mike Collins is beginning his fifth season as the Huskies head baseball coach in Bloomsburg narrowly missed reaching the PSAC playoffs in Collins first three seasons. The youthful 2008 Huskies staff were eliminated from the playoffs in the final weekend of the season. Three of the top starters who were on the shelf due to injury in 2008 return in 2009 to anchor a talented and deep pitching staff. Seven of the nine starters return to a strong 2009 line-up. Collins has also helped the Huskies lower their team ERA by more than two runs per game from 2006 to 2007 (6.97 to 4.91) and also improve the team s fielding percentage in the same period (.926 to.946) and batting average (.282 to.303), while scoring more than six runs per game. Collins came to Bloomsburg after spending four seasons as the top assistant at Binghamton University. A former Division I player, Collins was instrumental in the recruiting process for Binghamton, and played a prominent role in the success of the Bearcats program, helping the team to a berth in the America East playoffs in just the fourth season of Division One competition. He also holds a successful Crack of the Bat summer and winter camp for youngsters in the Greater Binghamton area. Collins previously served as head coach at Keystone College, compiling a overall mark for the junior college in La Plume, Pa. His 2001 team won a school-record 18 consecutive games en route to a record and runner-up finish in Region 19. In 2000 and 2001, Collins-coached teams earned pre-season national rankings, and he produced 11 all-region and two All- America players during his tenure at Keystone. Collins played Division I baseball at St. Joseph s University in Philadelphia before graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in politics in He was a two-time team captain and four-year letterwinner. 5

6 Assistant Coaching Staff Assistant Coaching Staff Assistant Coaching Staff Bill Carter Assistant Coach Bill Carter enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Huskies. Prior to joining the staff at Bloomsburg, Carter spent 18 years as Head Baseball Coach at Pocono Mountain East High School. While there, his teams won three Centennial League championships and advanced to two District XI Finals. He was named the Pocono Record newspaper Coach of the Year in Carter also spent four years as an assistant coach for the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Red Sox in the A.C.B.L. College Summer Baseball League from In 2002 & 2003, Carter served as head coach of the Lehigh Valley Keystone State Baseball Team. He has also served as director of the Cardinal Baseball Camps at Pocono Mountain East High School from 1995 to Carter has worked various baseball camps/clinics at East Stroudsburg University, Western Wayne High School, Stroudsburg High School and Delaware Valley High School. In addition, Carter worked the Diamond Kings Showcase at Lackawanna County Stadium. Carter is currently a 7th grade science teacher in the Pocono Mountain School District. He lives in Bartonsville with his wife Debbie. Their son, Chris, is a junior pitcher for the Huskies. Dusty Johnson Assistant Coach Dusty Johnson enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Huskies. Prior to joining the coaching staff, Johnson was a fouryear member of the Huskies baseball team, appearing in 37 games as a pitcher, with 22 career starts. He struck out 95 batters in innings and tossed 10 complete games. Johnson had his best season as a freshman, starting 11 times with 44 strike outs in 72 innings of work with seven complete games. 6

8 2010 Season Preview There are a lot of positive things that can happen having a young team. But there are even better things that can happen when a team has a high-level of maturity. Bloomsburg baseball coach Mike Collins feels that the maturity his team possesses is the strength of this year s team. I think our maturity is the key to this year s team, said Collins. Last year we possessed talent but we were unable to weather the storm and rebound when things got tough. That was largely due to the youth in our line-up. The guys learned that a college baseball season is a marathon not a sprint and consistency is the key. I feel that the struggles we faced last season taught us how to believe in yourself and bounce back from a sub-par performance. Collins feels this team has the necessary skills and desire to be very successful. The players worked hard and sacrificed throughout the summer fall and winter in preparation for the spring and I believe they are mentally and physically ready, Collins said. There s nothing about the team that does surprise me. We are as I imagined. I know these guys well and I know how badly they want to succeed. We don t have a lot of rah-rah type personalities. However, their intentions and goals are evident in their actions every day. These guys want success as badly as any team I ve coached. STARTING PITCHER The key to any team, especially at the collegiate level is pitching. The Huskies return three very talented conference starters who are capable of beating anyone in the PSAC East in Grant Kernaghan, Vinny Voorhees and Chris Tressler. The trio has faced and beaten the best the league has to offer. Bloomsburg lost two of them due to injury last year, but this season they are healthy and ready. The fourth spot is up for grabs with a battle among Chris Carter and David Langton for the spot. Cody Boren, Tyler Gansner and Mitch Troy are also possible candidates. BULLPEN Out of the pen Joe Crossin and Mike Rossetti are the experienced guys that can handle the pressure that comes with that role. Anthony Forman and Matt Dean have shown great promise on the mound and can add great depth to the pitching staff. CATCHER Behind the plate the Huskies have a pair of outstanding defensive catchers in Corey Eisenhart and Scott Kacelowicz. Both guys are outstanding in shutting down an opponent s running game. They have come a long way offensively since last year and expect to see a greater offensive contribution from both guys. Nick Eversole will give the team some depth. INFIELD At shortstop Tony Donofry is the centerpiece of the Huskies infield. He has improved in every phase of the game every year he has been at Bloomsburg. Donofry can hit for average and power; can steal bases and play great defense. New to the lineup this year at second base is Joey Ianiero. A transfer from Rutgers he is an excellent hitter and base runner. Ianiero possesses instincts at the plate and on the bases that will make him an ideal leadoff guy. At first base Jarrod Kramer will make across the diamond from third. Kramer has really dedicated himself to the weight room and has greatly improved his work with the bat. Taking over at third base is Gino Wise, a transfer from Delaware Tech. Wise is an athletic player who can hit with power and run. At Delaware Tech last spring he hit.409 with two homers and 28 RBI. In addition, Bloomsburg has several talented guys providing depth with Keith Meyer, Jerry Lloyd and Seth Pauling. Lloyd and Pauling both power hitters are strong candidates for DH. Both Lloyd and Pauling hit well last fall, while Meyer is a versatile middle infielder who can run the bases and put a lot of pressure on defenders. OUTFIELD In the Huskies outfield Chris Tressler is the most experienced and capable outfielder. Tressler can run and play all three positions and will hit anywhere from 2-4 in the line-up. Along with Tressler, Eric Ebert is a left-handed, power-hitting freshman that has shown great offensive potential and should make a splash right away in leftfield. Devin McLaughlin is a speedy centerfielder who will cover a lot of ground and help lower the team ERA. McLaughlin is a good bunter and should develop into a fine base stealer. Ryan Nanni is left-handed hitting right fielder that is a solid defender and shows pop at the plate and will also see plenty time in the outfield when Tressler is pitching. Collins and his team will begin play as usual in Virginia the Apprentice tournament and will then head south for the team s annual spring break trip against teams in North and South Carolina. In the middle of March the team will begin play in the always tough PSAC East, where the team was picked to finish last. The PSAC East is so tough from top to bottom, said Collins. Predictions are difficult. However I believe we will be in the top four heading into the conference tournament. These guys have been through this before. They know what lies ahead and there should be no surprises. They are ready. 8
