1 Kibitzer Unit 451 Fall, 2016 State of the Unit 451 by Bruce Yoder, President The Unit has a couple big projects coming up. The first is the new membership directory. This is a little tricky because we want to include everyone that participates at our local clubs as well as all official Unit members. I also want to give everyone the opportunity to opt out if they choose. An went to all members on our list asking them to contact me if they did not want to be included or contact me with names missing that they think should be added. I have also talked to club owners and managers trying to make sure we haven't missed anyone. Hopefully, the list will be updated accurately. The directories will be available at the local clubs. The second is the Holiday Sectional. The flyer is at the end of the newsletter. As always, this is a reasonably big undertaking, but "many hands make light work". We are fortunate to have Sue Edwards, Jim Ernest and Wanda Novak in charge of hospitality and Maggie Burke as partnership chairman. As time gets closer, we will be looking for volunteers to help set up tables and chairs and then put them away at the end of the tournament. Please consider saying yes if asked to help. Thank you. Other business of the Unit Board consists of nominating members to replace any vacancies as terms expire this year. We are also considering making a change with the Annual Dinner. Since the awards for the year ending December 31, aren't currently being handed out until June, it might be more appropriate to try and schedule this closer to the first of the year. These and other topics will be discussed at our next board meeting Wednesday, Nov 9, in Bremerton. The new directories have been printed and can be picked up at the local clubs. 2 Sad News from the Gig Harbor Club The Gig Harbor Club has had a major flood caused from the unit above the club. As a result the Club is closing indefinitely as the management won t let them relocate to a different unit in the existing complex. It is such a shame knowing the beautiful facility is so badly damaged. There is a possibility of opening a new club in a different location in Gig Harbor, but that won t likely occur until spring or summer of Watch your for further updates. Unit 451 Page 2

Bridge is played here every Thursday at noon in the St. Andrews church should you be visiting the area. I have really enjoyed seeing and visiting with many of you at recent tournaments. Here are some tips regarding Weak Two bids -- as taken from a Mike Lawrence newsletter (August 1998). Why preempt? not to buy the contract, but to impair opponents bidding What Style? PUSHY!!!!!! First Seat? use modest amount of imagination.. likely that one of the opponents has best hand at table Second Seat? come close to classical requirement as this makes life easier on partner Third Seat? preempt on ANYTHING not vulnerable as more than half your bids will be on a five card suit really disturbs opponents Fourth Seat? David Hoss In Memory of : We are saddened by the passing of David Hoss last March. David had serious health issues which frequently required him to cancel scheduled games.

4 David Hoss In Memory of : We are saddened by the passing of David Hoss last March. David had serious health issues which frequently required him to cancel scheduled games. But when he was at the bridge table he was always of good cheer and demonstrated a high level of skill. He never let his health problems interfere with the game. He is missed. Larry Josties Ted Rogers Larry Josties passed away on March 5, 2016 after a brief illness. Larry began his teaching career in Costa Rica in 1961 and returned to the Tacoma School District in 1966 with Mathematics and English as his subjects. He retired in 2004 but continued as a substitute teacher for 5 more years. Larry with Hugh and Sherry sponsored the TGIF Bridge Club on Friday Evening in Tacoma for many years; upon Sherry's passing in 1989, Larry, Wes and Shirley continued the Club in a variety of locations for the next 10 years, closing it in Larry was the Bridge Director at the Emerald Bridge Club in Federal Way, now located in Fife for the Thursday game from 2003 until February, His temperament and friendly attitude to all players will certainly be missed as he conducted a very friendly and relaxed game atmosphere. Larry was an accomplished player and played regularly in Federal Way and Tacoma with a variety of partners. Wes Kuhlman Unit 451 Page 4

5 Beginners by Paul Bartron Without beginners the game of bridge will die. Therefore we have to treat the club game as a stepping stone to more competitive bridge. There is good competition at Nationals, Regionals, and Sectionals. So the club games are places for beginners to learn the game. We were all beginners once. Perhaps only one in ten newcomers will make it at duplicate because to succeed one has to want to compete and have the determination to do better. For some unknown reason there are no Mozarts or Bobby Fischers at Bridge. Be nice to unknown opponents because they might be beginners. We are all turned off by offensive players and some of the most offensive ones can be the experienced life masters. When tutoring a beginner it is most important to do some self examination and recognize your own errors. First take the rafter out of your own eye, before you can take the straw from your partner s eye. I do a beginner class at Fircrest Community Center in Fircrest on Tuesdays at 6pm. Lunch time at the Tacoma Club. Paul makes the sandwiches for the group every time we meet. Unit 451 Page 5

8 The Big Bam: The Life and Times of Babe Ruth by Leigh Montville For as many years as I can remember Babe Ruth was a hero to all the boys at my schools. He was not only a great baseball player, but a candy bar was named after him. What more could a boy wish for? Until I took this book off the library shelf it came to me that I knew practically nothing about this American legend. I had heard he was originally a pitcher and then switched to just hitting. That was the extent of my knowledge. George Herman Ruth, was born February 6, 1895, in a neighborhood of Baltimore, called Pigtown. He was placed in St. Mary s Industrial School for Boys, an orphanage, by his parents on June 13, There are no records as to why his parents gave him up. This was the beginning for a boy who would be known as Sultan of Swat, the Bambino, the Big Bam, the Caliph of Clout, the Monster of Mash, and the Babe. George lived in the orphanage for thirteen years, and it was here that he learned how to play baseball. His notable record starts when he was purchased by the Boston Red Sox s. He pitched, the day he got off the bus, and recorded his first major league win, 4-3 over Cleveland, on July 11, On January 7, 1920, it was announced that the Babe had been sold to the New York Yankees. He arrived in New York on February 28, 1920 and until his last game as a Yankee on May 30, 1935, he amazed the world of baseball. During that time he hit 714 home runs, walked a record 2062 times, and his batting average was.349. This is all the more outstanding because until 1920, the dead balls were still used and the bats were heavy and not considered useful for hitting home runs. So you might say, where does bridge come into the life of the Babe? The ball players traveled from city to city on trains. The Babe had his own Pullman car where he could play his ukulele and saxophone. But more importantly he played a lot of bridge with his favorite partner Lou Gehrig. Other players were Don Miler, Mike Gazella and Ford Frick, reporter for the New York Evening World. In 1924, he met Harold Vanderbilt who revised the scoring system for contract bridge and added the concept of vulnerability. The Babe met the Vanderbilt s at their mansion on 57 th and Fifth Avenue, during a social gathering. It was said that Mrs. Vanderbilt took a liking to George and taught him some modern bridge. The game of bridge would have been given a huge boost if the public Unit 451 Page 8

9 had learned of their sports hero s deep interest in bridge. Especially since he came from such a disadvantaged beginning at St. Mary s orphanage. On June 13, 1948, the Babe said his last words in Yankee Stadium. Ladies and gentlemen, I want to say one thing. I am proud that I hit the first home run here in I m telling you it makes me proud and happy to be here. He died on August 16, Jerry Thorpe Camaraderie at the Tacoma Club Unit 451 Page 9
