2010 Season Outlook Competing For...Everything Beckman Sticks to His Plan, Feels His Rockets Are Poised to Compete for Championships When Tim Beckman assumed the head coaching position at the University of Toledo a year ago, he emphasized that competitiveness would be his mantra. It is simple, he said. His team would compete for everything. One year later, nothing has changed. From strength-training, to off-season workouts, to practice, to academics, to personal conduct even to team bowling outings the Rockets still compete for everything. We re sticking to our plan, said Beckman. We came in here in December of 2008 with a championship plan. It covers every part of our student-athlete s life social, academic and football. We know it will build champions. Beckman s Rockets took a step in the right direction in 2009, improving by two wins over the previous season. Just as important, perhaps, is the changed mindset of the team. There is a renewed aura of confidence among the players. These Rockets feel it is only a matter of time before they return the UT football program to its stature as one of the powers of the Mid-American Conference. We all share the vision of taking this program to another level, said Beckman. Our players are heading in the right direction, both on and off the football field. Beckman is very enthusiastic about the group of players he has assembled for Among the 14 returning starters from last year are second-team All-MAC wide receiver Eric Page and third-team 18 All-MAC linebacker Archie Donald. Joining these veterans is a 2010 recruiting class that many experts rated as the best in the Mid-American Conference. I think you will see great competition at every position, said Beckman. We ve had great competition in the off-season, and that will only help us get better this fall. The following is an overview of the Rockets: Quarterback Consistent with the theme of competitiveness, the Toledo offense will see intense competition at quarterback. Going into two-a-days, there are four serious candidates for the starting position. Vying for the starting position vacated by four-year starter Aaron Opelt will be sophomores Austin Dantin and David Pasquale, senior Alex Pettee and redshirt freshman Terrance Owens. Dantin may have an edge because he played in seven games as a true freshman last year, starting three. He completed 66 percent of his Sophomore Austin Dantin started three games a true freshman in passes and led the Rockets to victories against Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan. He also proved to be nimble on his feet. Pettee also saw duty, mostly in a loss to Temple in which he completed 29-of-47 passes for 265 yards. Pasquale was used strictly as a Wildcat QB, running for 78 yards on 24 carries. In the 2010 spring game, all four quarterbacks saw equal time. Beckman said the battle for the starting QB spot would continue during two-a-days. It s wide open, said Beckman. All our quarterbacks have their strengths. Each one had some good

2010 Season Outlook -Continued next pagescrimmages last spring. But we may not make the final determination until just before the start of the season. Running Back Even though there is no clear No. 1 candidate at running back, Beckman feels this is the team s strongest position on offense due to its quality depth. Junior Morgan Williams, who has rushed for nearly 1,500 yards over the past two seasons, is joined by a trio of talented players. Junior Adonis Thomas, sophomore Jake Walker and redshirt freshman Darius Reeves will all get a crack at moving into the rotation. Sophomore Eric Page caught 82 passes in 2009, more than any other freshman in the country and earning him All- America honors. Following a 1,000-yard season as a freshman in 2008, Williams ran for 444 yards as a sophomore while maintaining his 6.0 yards per rush average. Thomas rushed for 151 yards on 5.6 yards per carry in Walker rushed for 67 yards as a freshman in 2008, played briefly in three games last year before receiving a medical redshirt. The running back position is probably the biggest strength of our team and maybe our most competitive position, said Beckman. We have four guys who are competing for playing time, and any one of them could end up being a starter. Morgan Williams has great quicks, great speed and good hands. Adonis Thomas has great speed. He s had a great off-season. Jake Walker is a tough guy, very hard-nosed. Darius Reeves didn t get a chance to play last year because of injury, but he s very talented. He could be a factor. Wide Receiver/ Tight End Depth could be an issue at receiver. But there is no doubt about the talent of sophomore Eric Page. Page made a huge impact as a freshman, leading the nation s newcomers with 82 receptions and 1,159 receiving yards. He also led the Rockets in kickoff and punt return average. He was named Freshman All-America by numerous outlets, and also earned second-team All-MAC honors. Eric is ahead of his age in how he understands the game, said Beckman. He always knows where he s supposed to be heading on the field. He doesn t have blazing speed but he has good football speed. He s very competitive. He does not like to lose or give anything less than maximum effort. Opportunities abound for Toledo s other returning receivers, such as juniors Kenny Stafford (14 receptions in 2009) and Tim Cortazzo, sophomore Julian Bellinger and redshirt freshman Ed Williams. James Green, a true freshman, joined the team in January, giving him a head start on a talented and speedy group of newcomers. The top candidates at tight end are junior Danny Noble (26 receptions in 2009), sophomores Justin Jones and Jared Strait, as well as true freshman Gerard Atkins, who also joined the team in January. Danny Noble had a very good sophomore season, said Beckman. He runs extremely well so he can be a tight end/wide receiver threat. He also had a great winter, so we expect as lot from him. Gerard is a true freshman, but as an early enrollee he had the 19

2010 Season Outlook -Continued from previous page- Toledo has four offensive linemen who have started since their freshman seasons. advantage of having 15 practices before the rest of the freshman class got here. Offensive Line The offensive line is Toledo s most experienced position, with four returning starters from a line that keyed the No. 16 offense in the nation in Leading the way is senior center Kevin Kowalski, who moved to the middle of the line last season after two years as the starter at right guard. Kowalski quickly established himself as the leader of the o- line in 2009, a role he is likely to continue this fall. Joining Kowalski are three other returning starters: senior guard Nate Cole, along with junior tackles Mike VanDerMeulen and John Morookian. Others battling for playing time include junior Phillipkeith Manley, sophomores Fadi Farha and A.J. Linderman, and redshirt freshmen Erik Carlson and Zac Kerin. True freshman Robert Lisowski, who joined the team in January, will also be competing for playing time. We have four offensive linemen who have played since they were freshmen, said Beckman. They have a lot of games under their belt. We re definitely looking for leadership from them to help make us a successful offensive football team. Secondary Change is coming to the Rockets defense, both in attitude and personnel. We need to change the image and the attitude of the defense, said Beckman. The first thing we can do as coaches is bring in the players that can help us. I think we have done that. True, Toledo lost five defensive starters from 2009, including safety Barry Church, a fourtime All-MAC player and a free agent signee of the Dallas Cowboys. But 23 letterwinners return on defense, including three defensive backs who started as true freshmen. Also, four newcomers joined the team last January, three of whom are junior college transfers, and Diauntae Morrow, a junior safety who transferred from Iowa, will be eligible this fall. The defensive backfield could have the most interesting battles for playing time. Sophomores Byron Best (20 tackles) and Daxton Swanson (31 tackles) held down the all-important cornerback slots as true freshman in Swanson only had limited practice time last spring as he recovered from off-season surgery. Challenging for the corner positions are junior college transfer Taikwon Paige and senior Desmond Marrow. Paige comes in with solid credentials from Georgia Military College, while Marrow has played well in his UT career but has often been sidelined with injuries. Paige had a great off-season. We look for him to compete for playing time right away, said Beckman. Des had the best off-season on our team. He worked hard to come back from his injury (missed 2009 season). If he can stay healthy, he could really help us. Toledo s defense features three safeties, including Church s star position, a safety/linebacker hybrid. Candidates for that slot include junior Isaiah Ballard (23 tackles), senior Drey Lon Pree and junior college transfer Charles Rancifer. Ballard was the Rockets special teams MVP in One of those three players likely will shift over to a deep safety positions, competing with sophomore Jermaine Robinson (58 tackles, 6.0 TFL), a starter as a true freshman in 2009, and junior Mark Singer (16 tackles). 20

2010 Season Outlook Linebacker/ Defensive Line The linebacking corps is led by senior Archie Donald, a third-team All-MAC selection in Donald has led the Rockets in tackles in each of the past two seasons, including 116 last year. He will be joined in competition by sophomores Dan Molls (43 tackles) and Robert Bell (12 tackles), as well as senior Terrell Willis, who has played linebacker and defensive end throughout his career. The defensive line has about a dozen candidates for four positions, including five players who sat out as redshirts in 2009: redshirt freshmen Ben Pike, Christian Smith and Ben Steele, along with junior Johnie Roberts and sophomore Hank Keighley. We feel these guys have really benefited from sitting out a year, said Beckman. It s a position where a lot of guys need a year to get physically ready to play at this level. Vying for playing time at defensive tackle are Roberts, Pike, juniors Malcolm Riley and Johnathan Lamb, and sophomore Danny Farr. Roberts could have helped us last year but we felt he needed to learn a little more, said Beckman. Ben Pike could end up being our best inside lineman. He s very strong and hard-nosed. He weighed about 230 in high school and he s up to close to 270 now. He could be up to 280 by next fall. It will be interesting to see what (converted offensive lineman) Danny Farr can do. He s about 290 and gives us a little more beef in there. About the same number of players are competing for the two defensive end positions. The leading candidates are seniors Alex Johnson and Douglas Westbrook, along with sophomore T.J. Fatinikun. Westbrook had 24 tackles and 8.0 TFL in 2009 while Johnson added 22 tackles and 3.0 sacks in Fa- Senior linebacker Archie Donald led the Rockets in tackles for the second straight season in tinikun (20 tackles, 2.0 sacks) made great progress as a true freshman and is improving rapidly. Other players vying for playing time are junior Damien McIntosh, Keighley, as well as Smith and Steele. Alex Johnson is our most proven guy on the line. He s a good pass rusher and does a good job holding down his edge, said Beckman. T.J. Fatinikun played very well as a true freshman. He s gotten bigger. He could be special. Douglas Westbrook has a lot of experience and had a very good off-season. Hank Keighley redshirted last year and will definitely be competing for playing time. Christian Smith, Ben Steele and Damien McIntosh will all have a chance to play. Special Teams Beckman is confident that special teams will be one of the most improved areas for the Rockets in Both kicking positions, as well as the return positions, will see intense competition during two-a-days. Four-year placekicker Alex Steigerwald is gone, leaving a battle between senior Bret Brodbeck and juniors Ryan Casano and Andrew Weber. Casano missed most of last season due to injuries. Junior Bill Claus (37.4 avg.) is back at punter but he will be pushed by redshirt freshman Vince Penza. Junior Colin McHugh, a two-year starter at long snapper, will be competing with redshirt freshman Matt Wall. Various players will have an opportunity to return kickoffs and punts this spring. The most experienced returners are sophomore Eric Page, who led the team with 25.4 yards per attempt on kickoffs and 10.8 on punts, and fellow sophomore Julian Bellinger, who averaged 17.4 yards per return on kickoffs. 21

Q & A With Coach Beckman You are entering your second season at UT after many years as an assistant at other schools. How are your impressions of UT different now? Beckman: I ve been here for a little more than a year now and the thing that I keep seeing is the commitment. Every time you walk out on campus you see a commitment from the administration and from the faculty to strive to make this University a better place for students. So many of the changes you see are for the betterment of the students. It s the same for our Athletic Department. So much is happening that is making the lives of our studentathletes better. You have that feeling that this University is committed to making people s lives better. What is the biggest key to the success of the 2010 team? Beckman: It comes down to the fundamentals of the game. We ve got to improve on those. Avoiding turnovers, better tackling, better blocking. That s what wins games. We are striving every day to become a better football team. We re sticking to our plan. We came in here in December of 2008 with a plan, a championship plan, in my opinion. It covers every part of the studentathlete s life social, academic and football. We know it will build champions. How does having the Fetterman Training Center help your program? Beckman: For recruiting, it is our Wow factor. But what people don t realize is that when a young man walks in, he doesn t just see a great facility. He sees a commitment of excellence by the University. He also sees the vision the University has for its athletic programs. It shows that we are dedicated to make this the best football program in the Mid-American Conference. Think about all the years the punters and kickers were kicking balls into a net. Kicking is not just about kicking the football. It s about kicking the football where you want it to go, being able to drop a punt inside the 10-yard line between the numbers and the sidelines. You can t practice that kicking into a net. For wide receivers, it s about running complete routes at full speed instead of running on a basketball court in sneakers at three-quarters speed. For quarterbacks, it s about throwing deep routes on a football field. For defensive backs, it s about working on back-peddling while covering receivers who are going at full speed. Having an indoor facility is going to make a huge difference in our program. We came in here in December of 2008 with a plan, a championship plan, in my opinion. It covers every part of the student-athlete s life social, academic and football. We know it will build champions. You ve built a reputation as a coach who embraces social media, like Facebook and Twitter. Why are those things important to you? Beckman: I love it. I love talking about Rocket football. You won t see me talking about myself, what movie I watched or what I had for lunch or what have you. The only thing I want to talk about on Twitter or Facebook is Rocket football. It s a great way for me to communicate with fans and recruits. - Tim Beckman You ve also gained a reputation for putting in long hours in the office. Beckman: Well, is not a 9-to-5 job, that s for sure. It s a very rewarding job, but you have to be dedicated to it 100 percent. Just as importantly, your family has to be totally committed to it because they make sacrifices. But I also look at Rocket football as being part of my family. All 105 of these players and all the coaches are my family. 23

Q & A With Coach Beckman Most recruiting experts ranked your class this year as the best in the MAC. How do you feel about that? Beckman: Well, they haven t played a dang snap yet, but we re excited about these young men. They re not just great football players, they re good people. We have a valedictorian in this class (James Gordon). The average GPA for this group is about a 2.9, which is outstanding. This class will make us a better team in every way. You don t have a lot of seniors on your roster. Where will your leadership come from? Beckman: Leadership is earned. It doesn t always have to come from a senior. That s one of the reasons why we name different captains each week. Eric Page, a freshman, was a captain for one game last year. Leadership has to come from all classes. We have regular leadership lunches where I meet with players from all classes. We try to teach the players how to be leaders. We have nine seniors and only three who have played all four years. So we need leaders to step up from the junior, sophomore and even freshman classes. You may have a young team overall, but your offensive line is certainly filled with veterans. Every time you walk out on campus you see a commitment from the administration and from the faculty to strive to make this University a better place for students. You have that feeling that this University is committed to making people s lives better. - Tim Beckman Beckman: We have four offensive linemen who have played since they were freshmen. They have a lot of games under their belt. We re definitely looking for leadership from them to help make us a successful offensive football team. They did an excellent job last year. We just need them to be a little bit more physical. Senior Kevin Kowalski moved to center last year and seemed to thrive there. Is he the leader up front? 24 Beckman: Kevin has played just about every position on the offensive line so he knows it well. We put him at center last year because that s such an important position in our offense. Kevin is very competitive. He has great strength and quickness. He has a great work ethic. He s trying to be the best player he can be, and also wants the guys around him to be the best they can be. With all the adjustments we ask our center to make during a play, you need a guy in there who is a leader. You have three other starters back on the offensive line, Mike Van- DerMeulen, Nate Cole and John Morookian. Who else are you looking for to step up? Beckman: (Junior guard) Phillip Manley s going to have to step in and be a factor for us. Zac Kerin, A.J. Lindeman and Fadi Farha all had good offseasons. We will need them to improve and become part of our rotation. Danny Farr moved to defensive line. We will continue to evaluate that move and go from there. Who will be competing for playing time at tight end? Beckman: Danny Noble had a very good sophomore season. He runs extremely well so he can be a tight end/wide receiver threat. He also had a great off-season, so we expect as lot from him. Our other three tight ends are Justin Jones, Gerard Atkins and Jared Strait. Gerard is a true freshman, but as an early enrollee he has the advantage of having 15 practices before the rest of the freshman class gets here. That can be a huge advantage. At wide receiver, you lose Stephen Williams but you return Eric Page, who as a freshman was probably one of the best receivers in the MAC. What made Page develop so quickly?

Q & A With Coach Beckman Beckman: Eric is a very intelligent player. He s ahead of his age for how he understands the game. He always knows where he s supposed to be heading on the field. He doesn t have blazing speed but he has good football speed. He s very competitive. He does not like to lose or give anything less than maximum effort. Who are the other candidates at wide receiver? Beckman: (Junior) Kenny Stafford is an experienced receiver who keeps improving. We need to have a big year from him. (Sophomore) Julian Bellinger has great speed and potential. He had a great winter. We also have (redshirt freshman) Ed Williams, (junior) Tim Cortazzo and (freshman) James Green who competed during the spring. Eric is a very intelligent player. He s ahead of his age for how he understands the game. He always knows where he s supposed to be heading on the field. He doesn t have blazing speed but he has good football speed. He s very competitive. He does not like to lose or give anything less than maximum effort. - Tim Beckman on Eric Page How do you assess the running back position? Beckman: The running back position is probably the biggest strength of our team and maybe our most competitive position. We have four guys who are competing for playing time, and any one of them could end up being a starter. (Junior) Morgan Williams has great quicks, great speed and good hands. (Junior) Adonis Thomas has great speed. He s had a great off-season. (Sophomore) Jake Walker is a tough guy, very hard-nosed. (Redshirt freshman) Darius Reeves didn t get a chance to play last year because of injury but he s very talented. He could be a factor. Who are the leading candidates at QB? Beckman: The quarterback position will be very competitive. We have four players who will be competing at QB. (Sophomore) Austin Dantin could be said to have an edge because he played the most last year. He has proved he can be a leader. He just needs to be more consistent. (Junior) Alex Pettee also proved he can come in and play. (Sophomore) David Pasquale will get a chance to throw the ball more. Having the Fetterman Training Center to throw over the winter really helped David. He can throw the ball. But he s also a 238-pound guy who can run. (Redshirt freshman) Terrance Owens is a guy nobody knows about. He s a taller guy and he s put on some weight. He s up to about 190 now from about 165 pounds in high school. He s had a good off-season and he s ready to compete. OK, now the defense, starting with the defensive line. Is it fair to say we will see a lot of new faces there? Beckman: No doubt about it. We redshirted five players from the defensive line that should help us this year: Ben Pike, Johnie Roberts, Christian Smith, Ben Steele and Hank Keighley. It s a position where a lot of guys need a year to get physically ready to play at this level. We have six candidates for the two tackle position and seven guys competing at defensive end. At tackle we have (junior) Malcolm Riley, (junior) Johnathan Lamb, (junior) Johnie Roberts, (sophomore) Danny Farr and (redshirt freshman) Ben Pike all competing for playing time. 25

(Redshirt freshmen) Christian Smith, Ben Steele and (junior) Damien McIntosh will all have a chance to play. Who are the candidates at linebacker? Beckman: (Senior) Archie Donald has been our leading tackler for the past two seasons. He s always around the football making plays. He just needs a little work on his pass coverage to become a complete player. (Sophomore) Dan Molls had a good freshman year. He runs well and he s 26 got a great work ethic. We expect a lot from him. (Sophomore) Robert Bell is a playmaker. He s very competitive. Senior Terrell Willis will also be competing for playing time. He has played both on the defensive line and at linebacker, but I think he is more comfortable at linebacker. Your secondary was young last year but the good news is they are a year older. Beckman: We started three true freshmen in the defensive backfield last year. We will have all those guys back plus some new guys that I think will really help us. Our cornerbacks were (sophomores) Byron Best and Daxton Swanson. Daxton had limited contact in the spring as he recovered from offseason surgery. Those two will be competing with (junior college transfer) Taikwon Paige and (senior) Desmond Marrow. Paige had a great spring. Des had the best winter on our team. He worked hard to come back from his injury (missed 2009 season). If he can stay healthy he could really help us. We will have three players competing this spring for Barry Church s old star position, (junior) Isaiah Ballard, (senior) Drey Lon Pree and (junior college transfer) Charles Rancifer. Ballard was our special teams player of the year in 2009, so he is very valuable player on special teams, as well. One of those three will probably move to safety, competing with (sophomore) Jermaine Robinson and (junior) Mark Singer. Who are the candidates on special teams? Beckman: (Junior) Bill Claus is back at punter. He will be competing with (redshirt freshman) Vince Penza. At placekicker, our candidates are Brett Brodbeck, who is a senior, (junior) Ryan Casano and (junior) Andrew Weber. Casano missed most of 2009 with injuries so he is eager to show what he can do. At long snapper, (redshirt freshman) Matt Wall will be competing with (junior) Colin McHugh, who has done a good job for us the past two seasons.

2010 Rocket Notebook ROCKETS RETURN 13 START- ERS, 41 LETTERWINNERS The Rockets will have 41 returning letterwinners on the roster this fall, including 13 returning starters from Among the returnees are returning All-MAC players Eric Page and Archie Donald. Page, a sophomore wide receiver, led the nation s freshmen with 82 receptions in 2009 and made second-team All-MAC. Donald led the Rockets with 116 tackles and made third-team all-league. six rocket newcomers get a head start Six newcomers to the UT program got a head start in their careers as Rockets by enrolling last Janaury. All six participated in winter workouts as well as the spring practice season. ROCKETS ADD TWO COACHES AND ONE ADMINISTRATOR TO THE STAFF The Rockets added Scott Izzy Isphording and Louis Ayeni to the Rockets coaching staff, while Tom Manning joins the football staff as the director of football operations. Isphording will be the quarterbacks coach, while Ayeni will coach the running backs. Alex Golesh will move from coaching running backs to become the tight ends coach, while maintaining his duties as recruiting coordinator. SPRING GAME HIGHLIGHTS The Blue team defeated the Gold team, 21-14, in the Blue and Gold intrasquad scrimmage in April. The game wasn t decided until a minute left in the game when junior Morgan Williams scored on a one-yard run to give the Blues the victory. The Rocket coaches made sure that the skill players had ample opportunity to make a case for playing time. All four Rocket quarterbacks saw significant action, 13 different receivers caught passes and four running backs carried the ball at least five times. Sophomore Austin Dantin was a perfect 8-of-8 for 56 yards and senior Alex Pettee was 12-of-19 for 94 yards for the Blues, while sophomore David Pasquale was 7-of-14 and redshirt freshman Terrance Owens was 9-of- 13 for 66 yards. Leading rushers for the Blue team were Williams, who rushed for 51 yards and one score on 13 carries, and Reeves, a redshirt freshman who gained 48 yards on 15 rushes. Thomas, a junior, led the Gold squad with 79 yards and two TDs. Sophomores Eric Page and Jake Walker led all receivers with five catches each. Leading tacklers for the game were freshman safety Ross Madison (11) and senior linebacker Archie Donald (10), both for the Gold team. 27
