The second-most times a Buckeye had been intentionally-walked in a career in the last decade is six. ONE FOR THE SENIORS The 5-3 upset victory vs. No. 2 Michigan April 28 was one the Ohio State senior class will remember. Powered by home runs from seniors Courtney Pruner and Rebecca Schultz, the Buckeyes snapped the Wolverines 16-game winning streak and delivered UM its fi rst conference loss in 2010 while notching the class fi rst career win vs. Michigan. For Pruner, it took just one pitch to air mail her ninth home run of the season over the left fi eld wall to give OSU a 3-0 lead in the fi rst. In the bottom of the fourth, Schultz, who had a 3-1 count, added two more runs on the board as she hit her second homer of the year and fourth career. FLIRTING WITH A SWEEP After falling behind 4-0 in game two vs. No. 2 Michigan April 28, Ohio State put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run game. The Buckeyes then loaded the bases in the sixth but Michigan s Jordan Taylor, who leads the league in strikeouts, was able to escape the inning. For the game, Ohio State had seven hits while Michigan had eight. IN THE BIG GAMES Senior Courtney Pruner has proven to be a vital part of the Ohio State team in the clutch, providing strong at-bats against both Top 25-ranked Illinois (April 10-11) and Michigan (April 28). The Akron, Ohio, native batted.400 vs. two of the nation s top pitchers, going 2-for-5 with a threerun home run in the 5-3 victory vs. No. 2 Michigan. Against the No. 18 Illini, Pruner was the hardest batter to get out, going 6-for-7 with seven RBI and three runs scored. She homered twice vs. Illinois, including a grand slam in Ohio State s 10-2 victory April 11. 4 10 IN A ROW Between April 11-28, Ohio State recorded a 10- game win streak with freshman pitcher Melanie Nichols recording the W in seven games. Nichols won five-consecutive games for the Buckeyes, sweeping Indiana (April 21) and Minnesota (April 24-25) before helping Ohio State to its fi rst victory over No. 2 Michigan (April 28) since the 2003 season. In that 10-game stretch, Nichols went 7-0 with a 0.85 ERA while allowing just fi ve earned runs, striking out 37 and walking seven, fi ve of which came vs. Michigan. SCHULTZ HOMERS Senior Rebecca Schultz hit her fi rst home run of the season, a solo shot over the left fi eld wall in the third inning of game two vs. Indiana April 21. And just a week later, the fi rst baseman helped solidify Ohio State s 5-3 victory over No. 2 Michigan (April 28) with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. She has four career homers after hitting two in both her junior and senior campaigns. ONE HITTER Freshman pitcher Melanie Nichols threw her fi rst career one hitter, shutting out Indiana, 8-0, April 21 at Buckeye Field. Nichols faced just 19 batters, striking out six and retiring the Hoosiers in order in fi ve of the six innings. NOTING THE RANKINGS Last season, the Buckeyes spent 14-consecutive weeks in the national rankings, spanning from Feb. 20 when they debuted at No. 23 through the NCAA Super Regional May 22 as they concluded the season with the highest ranking in program history at 12th. The 14 weeks spent in the Top 25 set an Ohio State record for consecutive weeks in the polls. Previously, the 2003 and 2008 squads had maintained a Top 25 ranking for eight-consecutive weeks. Ohio State, currently ranked 19th in the NFCA and 22nd in the USA Softball Collegiate polls, is all-time when ranked, including at home when owning a Top 25 mark Overall Stats Player avg gp-gs ab r h 2b 3b hr rbi tb slg% bb hp so gdp ob% sf sh sb-att po a e fld% 24 Herron, Alicia Hillman, Dee Dee Marder, Sam Pruner, Courtney Goodchild, Brittany Ledford, Leah Cooper, Whitney Coletta, Megan Schultz, Rebecca Mills, Brittany Medrano, Karisa Pecina, Julia Spears, Vanessa Simonton, Katie Shepherd, Rachael Nichols, Melanie Totals Opponents LOB - Team (288), Opp (243). 5 GETTING IN THE SWING OF THINGS Freshman third baseman Megan Coletta is quickly proving her abilities not only in the fi eld but at the plate. The rookie from Fullerton, Calif., batted.500 in the eighth spot against Minnesota April 24-25, recording her fifth career multiple RBI game with three in game two. She has 23 RBI on the season to rank fi fth on the squad. A tall and fast third baseman, Coletta has a.935 fielding percentage, playing in 37 games and starting 30. IN A RHYTHM The Ohio State offense was in a groove April 21, out-hitting Indiana, 23-6, in a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. In the two games, junior Brittany Goodchild led the squad batting.750 (3-for-4) with an.833 on base percentage while Whitney Cooper was second on the squad with a.571 batting average and a leadoff home run. Sophomore Alicia Herron was third, batting.500 while producing fi ve RBI and scoring three runs. Freshman pitcher Melanie Nichols helped limit the Hoosier bats, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 batters in her combined 8.2 innings pitched as she picked up both wins. OUT-SPARKING SPARTY Senior Rebecca Schultz went 3-for-4 against Michigan State April 17-18, including a clutch hit-and-run RBI double in game one. Schultz and classmate Whitney Cooper tied with a team-high four runs in the series. Alicia Herron hit two doubles and a three-run home run to lead the squad with fi ve RBI while senior Sam Marder hit two solo homers for the Buckeyes. NICHOLS FANS EIGHT Freshman pitcher Melanie Nichols fanned a careerbest eight batters vs. Bowling Green in game one April 14. Her previous high had been seven notched vs. UC Riverside (March 5). PRUNER POUNDS ILLINOIS Senior Courtney Pruner was named Big Ten Player of the Week April 12 after proving to be the hardest batter to get out in the Illinois-Ohio State series April 10-11, going 6-for-7 with seven RBI and three runs scored. The Akron, Ohio, native homered twice, including a grand slam in Ohio State s 10-2 victory April 11. The two-time captain, who has had hip surgery twice, also made a critical diving catch in the bottom of the second to limit the Illini to just one run. HITTING MILESTONES With two home runs over the April weekend, senior captain Courtney Pruner upped her career record to 34. She still ranks third in the Buckeye all-time career record book but is just seven shy of tying for second. April 10, she brought in both Ohio State runs in the one-run loss to the Illini to take over the No. 3 spot on the all-time Ohio State RBI list and has 150 in her career. The Akron, Ohio, native also hit the century mark with her 100th walk. SOLID PITCHING Senior Megan Miller and freshman Melanie Nichols both held No. 18 Illinois, who was ranked third in the country in runs per game (7.50) prior to entering the Big Ten series, to just two runs. Miller recorded her eighth win on the season, allowing just six hits and one earned run April 11. The two also paired to shutout Bowling Green April 14 at home. Melanie Nichols threw a seasonhigh eight strikeouts for the 4-0 victory in game one. Miller allowed just two hits through four innings to help the Buckeyes down the Falcons, PRUNER AND GRAND SLAMS Courtney Pruner knows how to rise to the occasion. After batting just.333 between March 27 and April 2, the senior captain came through big for Ohio State against No. 18 Illinois, going 6-for-7 with 7 RBI April in Champaign. Alicia has come up with some big shots for us when we needed her in the last couple of games, Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said of Herron who ended the game vs. the Bobcats 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. During Ohio State s seven-game spring break trip in Florida March 19-24, Herron hit.478, scoring a team-high six runs and adding three RBI. A TRIPLE-THREAT TRIO For a second-consecutive year, seniors Whitney Cooper, Sam Marder and Courtney Pruner will serve as Ohio State captains. Whitney, Sam and Courtney will represent an outstanding team of young women as tri-captains this season, Linda Kalafatis said. It s no mistake that all three repeat as captains again in their senior year after serving in this role along side of last year senior Kim Reeder. I like that each represents a different position group and that they understand the privilege of serving their team members as captains. We have high expectations for the upcoming season and these three will have crucial roles in keeping our team focused and working hard. They ve got a great group to work with and I am confi dent that they ll do a great job of leading the way for us. POWER HITTING The Buckeyes return a dynamic hitting trio in Sam Marder, Courtney Pruner and Alicia Herron. With their help a season ago, Ohio State outscored its opponents, , as Marder knocked in a program-high 19 home runs to take over No. 1 in the record book with 43 in her career. Herron contributed 14 homers, the most by any Buckeye freshman, as Pruner chipped in 12. AT THE HELM Head coach Linda Kalafatis, in her14th season at the helm of the Buckeyes, is one of the most successful coaches in the Big Ten and the NCAA. She is one of four conference coaches with more than 700 career wins, placing her among the Top 30 active coaches in the country. The 2007 Big Ten Coach of the Year, Kalafatis is third among current Big Ten coaches in number of victories with fi ve fewer years coaching experience than her nearest colleague. The Buckeyes have won 30 or more games in nine of Kalafatis 13 seasons in Columbus and in each of the last six seasons. Also the Big Ten coach of the year in 2002, she has guided Ohio State to fi ve of the program s six NCAA tournament appearances (2002, 04, 06, 07, 09), including its fi rst trip to the NCAA Super Regional a season ago. Kalafatis entered the 2010 season with a (.615) record in 13 years at Ohio State, which marks the best win total and winning percentage in program history. In 21 years as a collegiate head coach, including stops at her alma mater California (Pa.) and Akron, she owns a record of (.650). GIVE HER A PROMOTION Ali Viola was promoted to associate head coach of the Buckeyes prior to the start of the 2010 season. Viola will be serving her fi fth year at Ohio State this year, working primarily with the Buckeye infi eld, as well as tutoring the team s power hitters. Viola has shared the credit for the Buckeyes success over the last few seasons - including their run to the 2009 NCAA Super Regionals, one of Ohio State s three appearances at the national tournament (2006, 07 and 09) in her four years with the program. In just her second season, Viola assisted in guiding the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Championship in STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE In 2010, Ohio State will face one of the toughest schedules in head coach Linda Kalafatis tenure, playing 20 games vs. 14 teams that made the NCAA Regionals a season ago, including three teams coming off Women s College World Series appearances. In Houston, the Buckeyes defeated two Top 25 teams in then-no. 15 Baylor, 4-3, and No. 21 Louisville, 2-0. OSU played its fi rst of three 2009 WCWS opponents in No. 8/9 Alabama, facing the Crimson Tide three times in DeLand, Fla., last weekend. Alabama played four games at the WCWS a season ago, fi - nally falling to runner-up Florida. Conceivably one of the toughest overall tournament weekends for the squad was the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., Feb At the tournament, four of the fi ve teams the Buckeyes played were selected to at least an NCAA Regional, including UCLA who made the Super Regional before falling to Missouri, a 2009 WCWS team. Also at the tournament were Top 25 opponents Fresno State and Tennessee. At the aten Construction Tournament March 5-7, Ohio State fell to Notre Dame, who made an appearance at the NCAA Regionals in I LL TAKE A SAM MARDER, PLEASE Senior catcher Sam Marder was inducted into the inaugural sandwich club at Sloopy s Diner, a restaurant in Ohio State s new student union, March 16.
