2 Washington State University baseball began the Donnie Marbut era in 2005 by winning its season-opener over Sacramento State, an 8-7, extra-inning victory in Sacramento. Comprising a roster of 19 first-year players, the Cougars learned on the fly as they posted a record. Among the Cougar highlights: With the Cougars season-opening, 8-7, win over Sacramento State, head coach Donnie Marbut became the ninth WSU head coach to win his first baseball game as a Cougar and the first since Bobo Brayton beat Gonzaga 9-4 March 22, 1962; WSU had a season-long four-game win streak late in the nonconference season, defeating Portland, Lewis-Clark State and taking the first two games against Northern Colorado (3/4-12); WSU won three series during the season, defeating Southeastern Louisiana (2-1), Northern Colorado (2-1) and Utah Valley State (3-1); Kaeo Rubin tied a school record with six hits against Northern Colorado (3/11); Dane Renkert established a new school record by appearing in 30 games during the season; James Freeman tied a WSU single-season record by starting 17 games on the mound; Senior Brady Everett was the first Cougar in three seasons to be named to the All-Pacific- 10 Conference first team; Jay Miller moved into 10th place on the alltime hits list at WSU with 219; Jim Murphy s 440 putouts marked the 9th highest single-season output at WSU; Dane Renkert s five saves tied for 7th on the Cougars single-season list while his seven career saves are tied for 9th; Four Cougars were named to the Pac-10 All- Academic team, including one first-team selection, Zach Kostorus. Leading the Cougars with the battling title for 2005 was Zach Franklin who hit.364, raising his career average to.328. Franklin also led the Cougars with an OBA of.455. Coming in second for the batting race, Brady Everett finished with a solid.337 average. Everett also contributed in many other categories by finishing first in runs scored with 50, total bases with 126, runs batted in with 62 and homeruns with 15. He kept the power alive by also finishing atop the list for slugging percentage with a.606 average. Winning the batting title in 2003 and 2004, Jay Miller continued to hit well as he posted a.322 average and finished with a team high 12 doubles and 74 hits. Miller comes in 10 th on the career hit list at 219. As a team, WSU hit.285, had 566 hits and drove in 319 runs. The Cougars also tallied 34 homeruns, 209 walks and 70 stolen bases. On the mound, James Freeman finished the season with a 7-8 record and an ERA of Freeman led the team in innings pitched with 88.2 and struck out 71. His notable 17 starts tie the all time record. Relief pitcher Dane Renkert finished the season with a 1-3 record and led WSU with a 4.89 ERA. Achieving a school record 30 appearances with 29 games in relief, Renkert posted a team 2005 review high 5 saves and secured his name on the leader board for all time saves. Cougar pitchers struck out 329 opponents and allowed 256 walks. RECORD SETTERS Several WSU Cougars moved into the record books on both the single season and career lists: Jay Miller, Junior, Outfielder Career Hits 219 (10th) Dane Renkert, Senior, Pitcher Career Saves 7 (10th) Season Saves 5 (T-7th) Season Games Pitched 30 (1st) Jim Murphy, Freshman, Infielder Season Strikeouts 47 (7th) Season Putouts 440 (9th) James Freeman, Senior, Pitcher Season Games Started 17 (T-1st) Season Losses 8 (T-3rd) Season Walks 54 (6th) COUGAR BASEBALL RANKS SEVENTH IN ALL- TIME NCAA VICTORIES: Washington State University is ranked seventh in all-time NCAA Division I baseball victories with 2,347 at the end of the 2005 season a list of the top seven baseball programs appears below with their respective records and number of seasons played through 2005: SCHOOL W L T YRS 1. Fordham 3,912 1, Texas 2,971 1, USC 2,537 1, Michigan 2,468 1, Stanford 2,450 1, Arizona State 2,399 1, WSU 2,351 1, THE EDMONDS CC CONNECTION: Four current Cougars played for WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut during his tenure as head coach at Edmonds Community College former Tritons new to the squad this year are Eric Dingwall and Brady Everett Kaeo Rubin and Zach Kosturos both played under Marbut at Edmonds before coming to WSU last season all four players won a NWAACC Championship under Marbut. EXTRA INNINGS FIRST SINCE 1975: The 10-inning opening game of the 2005 WSU baseball season against Sacramento State Friday, February 4, was the first time since 1975 a Cougar team has played extra innings in its first outing of the season the Cougars lost 7-6 to LCSC at the start of the 1975 season. NCAA TOURNEY INCLUDES FIVE WSU FOES Washington State played six teams that reached the 2005 postseason, including five conference opponents to play in the 2005 NCAA Baseball Championships. Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State, Stanford and USC all played in regional tournaments, with Arizona State, Oregon State and USC advancing to Super Regionals and ASU and OSU participating in the 2005 College World Series. In addition to the five Pac-10 teams, NAIA power Lewis-Clark State also reached the NAIA World Series, finishing one win shy of the championship game. FOUR COUGARS NAMED TO ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM Zach Kosturos earned first team honors, Jason Freeman was named to the second team, while Jay Miller and Jeff Miller each earned honorable mention honors when Pacific-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced the conference allacademic baseball teams. Kosturos, a junior communications major, held a 3.52 GPA while starting 28 games in 2005, collecting 31 hits, including 11 doubles and a team-high three triples. He also earned CoSIDA All-Academic District VIII second-team honors. Freeman, a senior business administration major, carried a 3.25 GPA. The outfielder recorded 51 hits, 24 RBI and scored 30 Cougars in 55 starts last season. Jay Miller, a two-time all-academic honoree, held a 3.10 GPA in business administration. The junior posted a.322 batting average and led the team with 74 hits, including a team-high 22 multiple hit games. Jeff Miller, a 3.00 GPA student, made 57 starts in the Cougar infield, posting a.282 batting average with 59 hits and 40 RBI. Miller posted a team-high five RBI against Portland, March 4, last season. EVERETT, THREE OTHERS EARN PAC-10 HONORS Washington State senior Brady Everett was named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference first team while teammate Jay Miller, Jeff Miller and Dane Renkert earned honorable mention recognition. Everett led all Cougar regulars with a.337 batting average and led the team in runs batted in (62), runs scored (50) and home runs (15), which ranked second in the Pac-10. The senior catcher started 57 games for WSU, collecting 70 hits, including a team-high 18-game hitting streak early in the season. Jay Miller started all 58 games in the outfield for the Cougars and ended the season with a.322 batting average. Renkert led the team with a school record 30 appearances and ranks seventh on the singleseason saves list with five. Jeff Miller made 57 starts in the Cougar infield, posting a.282 batting average with 59 hits and 40 RBI. EVERETT CONCLUDES BRIEF COUGAR CAREER Brady Everett s brief WSU career concluded with the senior leading the Cougars in several offensive categories. Everett played just the 2005 season at WSU after spending one year at Edmonds CC and two seasons at Clemson, but he made a big impact. Everett led all Cougar regulars with a.337 batting average and led the team in runs batted in (62), runs scored (50) and home runs (15). The senior catcher started 57 games for WSU, collecting 70 hits, including a team-high 18-game hitting streak early in the season. Everett finished the season ranked 48th nationally in home runs per game (.26) and was No. 30 on the hardest to strike out list. Everett also left his mark on the Pac-10, ranking second in home runs, tied for third in RBI, and fifth in slugging percentage (.606). He capped his season year by being selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 15th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft C o u g a r B a s e b a l l

3 2005 review MURPHY S A MIDSEASON FRESHMAN ALL- AMERICAN: Jim Murphy was named to Baseball America s College Midseason All-Freshman Team, April 8 the first baseman was the only Pac-10 player named to the rookie team the Juanita High graduate from Kirkland led WSU regulars at the plate for four consecutive weeks in the 13-game span beginning March 24 and ending April 19, he hit.365 Jay Miller was the last freshman to lead WSU in batting average at the end of the season, hitting.341 in 2003 before Miller, the last time a freshman finished the season with the batting title was 1997, when red-shirt freshman Steve Curran led with a.350 batting average Murphy is currently fourth among Coug regulars with a.296 overall batting average and second with a.496 slugging percentage has 13 extra-base hits, including six doubles second on team with seven long balls. PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bellevue, Wash. native, Jay Miller was named the Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week for the week of March for his.688 hitting performance against Utah Valley State went 11-for-16 against the Wolverines, including three doubles, a triple and a homer scored six runs, while driving home as many and stole base three times with his performance he improved his overall batting average from.318 to.376, which led the team the week of March he is the first Cougar to receive the weekly honor this season. RUBIN SETS AND TIES WSU RECORDS: During the course of the Banana Belt Tournament and the following series against Northern Colorado, Kaeo Rubin set a school record with hits in nine consecutive trips to the plate tied a school record set in 1992 with hits in 10 consecutive at bats, not counting walks the record was originally set by current Cleveland Indian Mike Kinkade went 6-for- 6 March 11, tying a school record for hits in a game set in 1907 Rubin used hits over threegame span to set and tie school records had two hits sandwiched around a walk March 6 hit in first two plate appearances, going 3-for-4 March 12 against Northern Colorado had 11 hits with three doubles and five RBI in the threegame span.
