Mississippi State struggled to a 6-22 record last season. "We're going to play Tennessee, I believe our fifth game," Tate said. "That's the other reason I picked (Mississippi State). I believe the conference has a high level of competition, and I feel like I'm the kind of player that can play on that level." Tate, a two-starter at TJC, averaged 12.7 points and 9.2 rebounds last season. Her best game was a 27-point, 22-rebound performance

2 Page 2 of 6 against Panola on Feb. 25. James' only visit was to North Texas, a contender in the Sun Belt Conference. UNT won the Sun Belt's West Division before losing in the first round of the conference tournament. James, who averaged 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds last season, was TJC's top 3-point shooter. She was also the team leader. She said Jones gave her a solid foundation to build on as a studentathlete. "I know I've grown as a person, whether it's basketball, education or getting adapted to everyone," James said. "I've learned how to become a better listener and a better person." Vann, a 6-2 forward, visited Eastern Washington before choosing a school much closer to home. Texas Southern belongs to the Southwestern Athletic Conference. "It wasn't really a big deal if I stayed (close to) home or not, but I know both sides of my grandparents haven't seen me play before and I wanted to give them that opportunity," said Vann, who averaged 6.2 points and 5.8 rebounds. "I looked at the schedule for everybody TSU played in Houston, where my mom's family is from, and also in Alabama where my dad's from." Schmalzried, a 5-8 shooting guard, played one year at Hill College after graduating from Copperas Cove High School. She transferred to TJC and played mainly a reserve role last season while averaging 3.6 points per game. Schmalzried was recruited to play point guard at Wayland Baptist, located in Plainview.
