1 river city rascals (14-6) lhp justin edwards (1-2, 4.22) boomers 6, rascals 5 The Boomers rebounded a night after allowing 15 hits in a 12-3 loss by holding River City to just five hits in a victory. Five pitchers combined in the win. Starter Jose Rodriguez was much improved from his first professional start, utilizing his pitch count to work through four innings. Dave Whigham earned the win, his first of the season, after allowing two runs in two innings. Joe Parsons and Adam Tollefson bridged the gap for Patrick Mincey, who posted the final three outs to earn his third save. The Boomers opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second including a solo homer from Nate Baumann. River City posted three unanswered runs, taking a 3-2 lead when Jason Patton connected on a two-run homer in the sixth. Schaumburg answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead again and added two in the eighth to pad the lead. Gerardo Avila s ninth inning two-run homer accounted for the final tally. Sean Mahley drove home four runs for the Boomers in the win while Baumann collected three hits. Every member of the lineup reached base at least once in the game. bottom boys The eighth and ninth hitters in the Schaumburg lineup recorded five of the eight hits last night as well as driving home all six runs and scoring twice. Sean Mahley, batting eighth, drove home a franchise record four runs. Nine times previously a Boomer player had driven home two runs in a game. Mahley lifted a sacrifice fly in the second to plate the first run and added a first pitch two-run opposite field single to put the Boomers back in front in the sixth. The rookie also singled and scored in the eighth. Nate Baumann hit ninth for the first time this year and responded with three extra-base hits. Baumann hit his second homer of the year in the second, clearing the wall in right-center. The right-fielder also added doubles in the fifth and eighth. The eighth inning double scored Mahley with the game-winning run. perfect patrick To begin the 2012 season, Manager Jamie Bennett has used closer by committee with four different Schaumburg pitchers posting saves. That may have changed with the emergence of rookie Patrick Mincey. Mincey collected his third save in as many chances by retiring three straight in the ninth last night. Mincey entered following a two-run homer to pull River City within 6-5 but capped the game with a three-pitch strikeout of catcher Zach Deutscher. The Hartsville, South Carolina native has not allowed a run in eight appearances out of the bullpen. Mincey has logged 8.1 innings and tallied 13 strikeouts with three walks and just four hits. The Boomers are 7-for-8 in save opportunities this season. In addition to Mincey's three, Alex Theiroff has saved two games while Jason Braun and Dave Whigham one apiece. schaumburg boomers 2012 GAME NOTES boomersbaseball.com. 2 manager jamie bennett As the Boomers take the field in 2012, Jamie Bennett will be stepping out of the dugout as a manager for the first time in his storied baseball career. Bennett admits his career to which many young baseball players are judged, high school, was not overly decorated. He was, however, a three-sport athlete in high school, playing basketball and running track. But the focus for Bennett was baseball, pitching and outfield. Bennett received only one offer to play ball at the collegiate level - Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tenn. He remains grateful to the Pioneers experience for the good conditioning programs and baseball regiment, furthering his development into a full time left-handed pitcher. In JuCo, I was (topping out) in the high-80s, so I grew a lot, Bennett explained, and opened a lot of doors. Had two good years and did well in JuCo. The University of Tennessee noticed his success and brought Bennett on for the final two years of his collegiate career. While at Tennessee, Bennett was named All-SEC pitcher both years and set the SEC single season record for innings pitched (164 IP) and Tennessee single season record for strikeouts (144 Ks) in With his star on the rise at the collegiate level, the Philadelphia Phillies organization drafted the undersized left-hander. Jamie Bennett pitched in the Phillies farm system for over two years. Bennett quietly smiled as he revealed his Major League moment: striking out Derek Jeter in an Extended Spring Training contest. The numbers game caught up to Jamie in affiliated ball, however, and he was forced to set his eyes on independent baseball, continuing his passion and helping franchises win. With a few offers on the table, Bennett chose to play for Greg Tagert, then-manager of the Dubois County Dragons, a former Frontier League franchise. The two forged an instant connection. Greg was always straight-forward and always ran a regimented program. A lot of structure. Those were things I looked for, Bennett said. Bennett pitched for Tagert for three years in the Frontier League before traveling to Tagert s current team and fellow Salvi Sports Enterprises franchise, the Gary SouthShore RailCats of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. During the 2005 season, the RailCats capped off a historic championship run (formerly the Northern League Championship) against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (currently of the American Association) in five games. And for Game Five, Tagert chose his most reliable arm to start on the mound, Jamie Bennett. The left-hander hurled five innings and allowed only one run. It was the first playoff appearance and league championship in RailCats franchise history. Game Five was also Bennett s final professional outing. You couldn t have drawn up 2005 any better, Bennett said. After winning the 2005 Northern League Championship, Bennett started coaching the University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team for the 2006 collegiate season while he finished his bachelor s degree. The transition, like for any player, proved difficult. It was time to move on from playing, Bennett explained, It s a little tough to not be out there. Once the game gets going, things are out of your control, which is difficult to get used to. A call from Greg Tagert, however, in the middle of the 2006 professional season launched a decorated coaching career. When Bennett joined the RailCats 35 games into the season, the pitching staff posted a below-average 5.63 ERA. Bennett s effect was evident immediately. Over the final 62 games of the season, under Bennett s leadership, the RailCats pitching staff recorded a 3.45 ERA. Under Bennett s watch ( ), his pitching staffs posted an ERA under 4.00 twice, and two of his RailCats pitchers earned the league s Pitcher of the Year awards. Four of his former players, Willie Glen, Chad Blackwell, Kris Regas and Edwin Walker, signed to Major League organizations from the RailCats. During Bennett s playing days and coaching career with the club, the RailCats went to the playoffs all six years ( ), reaching the league championship series five times ( ) and winning the league championship twice (2005, 2007). After the 2010 RailCats playoff run, Bennett contemplated his next move in baseball. Life s unexpected turns always play a role. Months after the season, his wife, Julie, expected the couple s first baby. With the timing of the baby s due date, Jamie was forced to walk away from baseball for a year. The baby boy, Oliver Andrew Bennett, was born on August 13, 2011, just as the 2011 season was wrapping up. Coaching, for the Bennett family, was impossible. For the first time in years, Jamie had to watch from the stands. Yet the development of a baseball professional lived on in Jamie s heart. He wanted to manage. Under Tagert, he learned and contributed to the player procurement process and became a vital part to constructing a pitching staff, which was manifested in the team s success. Bennett didn t have to wait too long after changing diapers and feeding the little infant milk. Greg Tagert called Jamie once again in September, this time with a different opportunity. Pat Salvi s new franchise, the Schaumburg Boomers, needed a manager. Tagert knew just the guy, his trusted (left-handed pitcher) right-hand man, Jamie. When the Schaumburg Boomers and logo were introduced to the world on October 18, 2011, the Schaumburg community met the man at the helm of their new baseball franchise. Bennett attended the Unveiling Party and addressed the crowd. He wowed the audience while promising a team they d be proud of, both on and off the field. In 2012, Bennett is going to field a professional baseball team as the manager for the first time. And he couldn t be more thrilled. Boomers fans shouldn t be more thrilled either, because Jamie s track record speaks for itself. Success is his in his D.N.A. As is the orange. When asked which logo he preferred, RailCats or Boomers, he answered, Boomers logo. Going to Tennessee, I m a huge fan of the orange, Bennett said with a smile. first career win: may 18, 2012 at lake erie; 4-0

17 2012 SCHAUMBURG BOOMERS: ballpark information boomers stadium Built as a joint venture by the Village of Schaumburg and the Schaumburg Park District in 1999, the Schaumburg Boomers play all of their home games at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium located at the southeast corner of the Elgin-O Hare Expressway at Springinsguth Road (adjacent to Schaumburg Metra Station). The park is just five minutes west of I-290 and 8 miles southwest of Woodfield Mall. The $17 million stadium was designed by Sink Combs Dethlefs Architects and built by Turner Construction to the exact same dimensions as Wrigley Field, the historic, landmark home of the Chicago Cubs. With a capacity of 7,365 fans with 5,665 fixed seats, the ballpark also includes 16 luxury suites, 200 outfield bleacher seats and an additional 900 fans can be accommodated in the lawn area along both foul lines. The Schaumburg Club located on the first base side of the suite level features restaurant style seating complete with a full bar and glass-enclosed viewing of the game and is also available for private parties and banquets year round.
