2 12 History Records 2013 Review Players Coaching Staff Media The 16th baseball coach in school history, Daron Schoenrock enters his 10th season at the controls of Memphis baseball armed with a club featuring both experienced players and a talented group of newcomers One of the top head coaches in the business, Schoenrock led his 2013 team to the program s seventh 30-win season and second straight since joining Conference USA in 1995 The 2013 C-USA Coach of the Year led the Tigers to its best winning percentage (593) since 1994 with a record, which included five wins over top-25 teams (Ole Miss, Rice and Houston) The Tigers pitching was superb for Memphis in 2013, and the results proved it The U of M claimed C-USA Pitcher of the Year honors with junior Erik Schoenrock getting the nod while junior Sam Moll was also named to the league s first team Junior reliever Jonathan Van Eaton claimed C-USA second team accolades after breaking a school single-season record with 13 saves on the year The Memphis hurlers combined for a 305 ERA during the season for the fourth-best mark in the Tigers history, and the best since 1976 Off the mound, the Tigers were just as impressive, posting a 970 fielding percentage, third-best in program history Memphis also racked up a C-USA All-Freshman Team selection with Jake Little becoming the first Tiger since 2009 to be named to the team Off the field, the Tigers had a league-best four players named to the conference s all-academic team with Moll, Ethan Gross, Tucker Tubbs and Zach Willis earning the distinction In 2012, The Tigers won 12-of-15 games down the stretch to take momentum into the C-USA Tournament Memphis went 2-2 in the tournament, ending the season in the C-USA Championship game, but along the way, the Tigers earned a series win on the road over a top-10 opponent (UCF) for only the second time in program history For the second-straight season, Memphis was home to the C-USA Player of the Year with third baseman Jacob Wilson taking the honors Overall, Schoenrock saw the program lay claim to three first team All-C-USA players, one second team selection and three players on the All-Academic Team With Schoenrock at the helm of the Memphis program, the Tigers were able to end the 13-year postseason hiatus and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2007 The 2007 team went 36-27, marking the most wins since 1994 and, combined with the 2006 campaign, represented the first back-to-back winning seasons since 1994 and 1995 Since coming to Memphis, Schoenrock has brought in three nationally-ranked recruiting classes, while H e a d C o a c h D a r o n S c h o e n r o c k Tennessee Tech, 1984 Tenth Season At Memphis: /9 yrs Overall: /11 yrs 11 Tigers have been drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Twelve players have gone on to play professional baseball either through the draft or free agency Schoenrock inherited a program that had lost its top three pitchers and 10 seniors from 2004, and struggled through a campaign in 2005 With a well-planned goal, he wasted little time working to get the Tiger baseball program back on track, signing 25 newcomers for the 2006 season, including four, four-year transfers, a National Junior College Player of the Year honoree and five major league draftees Schoenrock brought those additions together and led the Tigers to a 32-win season in just his second campaign The 32 wins were the most wins for Schoenrock in his first three years as a head coach and the most by a Memphis baseball club since 2001 The 19-game turnaround tied for the second-best winning turnaround in the country in 2006 and also equaled for the best turnaround in Tiger baseball history--matching that of the 2001 team Along with that mark came Memphis first appearance in the Conference USA semifinals since the 2001 season Hired on June 29, 2004, Schoenrock immediately launched his plan to elevate Tiger Baseball by intensifying recruiting efforts, marketing season ticket campaigns, increasing revenue generated by the Bullpen Club and yearly banquets, and putting a plan in motion to upgrade the Tiger baseball facility The Tiger skipper oversaw the facelift recently given to FedExPark--the Tigers home since 2010 Through 17 years as an assistant (the last seven in the SEC), Schoenrock learned the importance an entire coaching staff has in carrying out the daily process of a program In 2011, Schoenrock hired Clay Greene, one of the top up and coming young coaches in college baseball, as his hitting coach and recruiting coordinator In the summer of 2013, he brought in g o Tigersg o c o m The University of Memphis

8 Director of Baseball Operations A l W o o d s Academic Advisor B r i d g e t V a n L a n d e g h e m STAN BRONSON MOST DURABLE BAT BOY Eighth Season Tenth Season 18 History Records 2013 Review Players Coaching Staff Media Al Woods enters his eighth season as the Director of Operations for the University of Memphis baseball program Woods, who joined Daron Schoenrock s staff prior to the 2007 season, is an invaluable facet to the program s success A native of Memphis and graduate of Ridgeway High School, Woods primary responsibilities include assisting in game day operations, team travel accommodations, umpires accommodations, coordinating the Tiger baseball Diamond Darlings, assisting with Tiger baseball camps, Tiger baseball s equipment needs and serving as the staff liaison with the Tiger baseball Bullpen Club As the Bullpen Club liaison, Woods is responsible for building the Memphis baseball booster club s membership He has been instrumental in recent efforts to reach out to former Tiger baseball letterwinners to get them involved in the program Over the last year, Woods has taken on a new responsibility for the University of Memphis athletics program, serving as the Nike liaison He is charged with ordering all equipment for baseball, men s basketball, men s and women s soccer, track and field and softball Woods is no stranger to baseball in the Memphis area The former RHS Roadrunner slugger served as the assistant coach at Southwest Tennessee Community College in 2004 and assisted Johnny Ray through the 2006 campaign Prior to his three-year stint at SWTCC, Woods coached for several years in the youth baseball ranks in Memphis Woods, 48, is married to the former Denise Medlin, and the couple has a son, Will (22) Game Administrator R y a n B r a d l e y Athletics Communications M a r k T a y l o r Fourth Season Athletics Communications B l a k e B a r i n g t o n Second Season Marketing K a y l a B o s c o Voice of the Tigers J e f f B r i g h t w e l l Eleventh Season Turf Management B e n W a i t s Second Season Strength & Conditioning B r e t H u t h Athletic Trainer J o n a t h a n D i e r c k s Second Season Manager S a m W i e d m a n Fourth Season Manager B r a n d o n P o r t e r Third Season Manager J a k e E d w a r d s A tradition lives on for Memphis Baseball Every time a Tiger home game reaches the middle of the seventh inning, it is Stan Bronson Jr s time in the spotlight The 86-year-old living legend pops from his seat beside the home team s dugout and heads to the home plate area where he acknowledges the Tiger faithful who have made it out to that day s game The fans, in turn, acknowledge Bronson, who has served as the Tigers batboy since 1958 Due to a decline in health, Stan may not be able to attend every game As the weather warms up, the University of Memphis hopes to see the tradition continue He has been a Tiger baseball fixture for more than 55 years and the U of M is looking forward to many more years with Stan in the dugout Known as a living legend in Tiger baseball, he now holds a place in history as the MOST DURABLE BATBOY ever, as approved by Guinness World Records Bronson was honored by the University s athletic department and presented the official Guinness World Records certificate in a pre-game ceremony on Sat, May 5, 2007 During Bronson s tenure as the batboy, Memphis has played more than 2,500 games Bronson was included in the 2008 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records Spearheaded by Tiger booster Beverley Dunn, the record-setting process came about in 2006 and was aided by yearly University of Memphis baseball media guides, as well as feature productions by Shirley Downing of the Commercial Appeal and Rob Petrone of WPTY/WLMT-TV Stan is a cornerstone of University of Memphis baseball Our players love having Stan around and I look to continue the tradition of having Stan as the official batboy of University of Memphis baseball -Head Coach Daron Schoenrock g o Tigersg o c o m The University of Memphis
