The No. 12 University of Oklahoma baseball team hits the road for the first time in the 2017 season. The Sooners open a five-game swing in Georgia by playing Georgia Tech Tuesday, March 14 at 3 p.m. CT. The following day, OU visits Georgia State for a 5 p.m. CT first pitch. About the Sooners... Oklahoma responded to its 12-game win-streak being snapped against Wichita State on Tuesday by rattling off four wins against Buffalo on the weekend. The Sooners outscored the Bulls, 33-13, for the series. After allowing 10 runs in the opener, OU pitchers gave up just one run over the next three games and strung together 25-consecutive scoreless-innings. Sophomore right-hander Dylan Grove gets the ball on Tuesday night at Georgia Tech. He is 0-1 with a 4.05 earned run average in three starts. Grove has struck out 20 in just 13.1 innings of work. Sophomore designated hitter Brylie Ware was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on MOnday after hitting.562 last week. He is hitting a team-leading.462 with 15 RBI and 13 runs. Sophomore outfielder Steele Walker is second on the team at.387 with 19 RBI and six runs. He is slugging a team-high.613 with seven doubles, two triples and two home runs. The Sooners are without senior first baseman Austin O Brien this week, though he did travel with the team, after a left elbow injury was sustained in the ninth inning of Saturday s game. O Brien, who is hitting.373 and slugging.597, tore his UCL and a muscle in his forearm, but will not require surgery. Oklahoma is hitting a league-leading.328 as a team with all nine players with 30 at-bats or more hitting.300 or better. On the Air... Hughes recorded five straight 30-win seasons at Virginia Tech, including a pair of 40-win campaigns that culminated with NCAA Tournament berths in 2010 and He inherited a club that hadn t reached the NCAA Tournament since 2000 and went on to compile a (.561) record in seven seasons with the Hokies from In 20 seasons as a head coach, Hughes owns a career record of (.569), including his stints at Boston College ( ) and Trinity University ( ). Georgia Tech is 10-4 overall and 1-2 following a three-game series against Miami (Fla.) this past weekend. The Yellow Jackets will throw RHP Ben Schniederjans on Tuesday night. Mark Roberts was excellent on the hill for OU; going eight innings with eight strikeouts to just two walks. As a team, the Sooners registered just seven hits, but Ole Sheldon and Matt Bose each drove in two runs. All-Time vs. Georgia Tech... The Sooners are undefeated in the all-time series, 6-0. All six contests have been played at a neutral site. The two teams first met in 1988 in Las Vegas. Most famously, Oklahoma and Georgia Tech squared off in the 1994 College World Series National Championship game. OU won the game, 13-5, as center fielder Chip Glass was named Most Outstanding Player. Irvin s 14 was the most by a Sooner since Michael Rocha struck out 13 against Texas A&M in He struck out three in an inning in the second, fourth and sixth and struck out five in a row for the second time in his career between the fourth and fifth inning. In relief, right-hander Connor Berry accomplished the rare feat of striking out four in an inning. He got the first batter looking before the next struck out swinging, but reached on a wild pitch. Berry then punched out the next two. Steele s Streak Snapped... The Sooners last turn at bat against Buffalo (3/11) ended on a groundball-double play with Steele Walker in the hole. He finished the game 0-for-4 as his 21-game hit-streak came to an end. Walker hit.405 (34- for-84) during the streak. Walker s streak is tied for the fifth longest in program history with Kevin Burdick (1986) and Zach Leske (2000). Senior Ben Hollas provided the walk-off single to beat Boston College (2/26) in a come-from-behind, 5-4 Sooner victory. It marked the first walk-off win of the season for OU and the sixth overall dating back to last season. Five of the Sooners last six walk offs have come on Sundays. Twice in 2016, Hollas came through with the walk-off knock. He launched a single to right to beat Texas (4/3/16) and hit a comebacker to the mound that was thrown away to beat West Virginia (4/22/16). TreMENDous Feat... Junior second baseman Kyle Mendenhall homered in back-to-back games of a doubleheader on February 25. He first hit a solo home run against Northern Illinois and later added a two-run shot off the light pole in left field against Villanova. Steele Walker was the last player to homer in back-to-back games and the last to do so in a doubleheader as he recorded the feat at Austin Peay (5/19/16). A Different Meaning to 19 Ways... The Sooners open the season with a string of 19 consecutive games played at home thanks to the opening series being moved from California to Norman. It tied for the longest homestand on record (1962-present), which was recorded in 1976; the year OU reached in fifth consecutive College World Series and won a program-record 62 games. Four-Hit Freshman... In Oklahoma s 17-1 rout of Villanova (2/25), freshman shortstop Brandon Zaragoza went 4-for-5 with three runs out of the nine hole. He became the first Sooner freshman to record four hits in a game since That season, Sheldon Neuse did so at UTA (3/11/14) and vs. Oklahoma State (5/23/14) in the Big 12 Championship. Austin O Brien also had a four-hit day that year by going 4-for-5 against Belmont (3/16/14) at home. Irvin Ks 10 Again... Opening day starter Jake Irvin matched his career-high with 10 strikeouts in the Sooners win over Long Beach State (2/17). He struck out the side in the first. Irvin previously struck out 10 against No. 25 Oklahoma State (4/20/16); a game in which he struck out the side in the first and the first two batters of the second. His opening day total was the most by a Sooner in the first game of the year since Andrew Doyle fanned 10 vs. Western Illinois in Back-to-Back Top-25 Series Wins... Dating back to last season, Oklahoma has won back-to-back series against ranked opponents following its season-opening series win over No. 17 Long Beach State. In 2016, the Sooners took two out of three as the visiting team in the Bedlam Series against No. 12 Oklahoma State played in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Under head coach Pete Hughes direction, Oklahoma previously claimed top-25 series wins over No. 25 Texas (2015) and No. 10 Texas Tech (2015). Freshman Starting Shortstop... In the season opener against Long Beach State (2/17), Brandon Zaragoza became the first Sooner freshman to start at shortstop on opening day in a decade. Bryant Hernandez was the last to do so. Tommy John Triumphs... A pair of Sooners returned to competitive, collegiate baseball in Oklahoma 11-2 win over Grambling State (2/21) after rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery. Sophomore Domenic DeRenzo, who was shut down in mid-may of 2016 and underwent surgery in June, started as the designated hitter and went 0-for-3 with three RBI on a bases-loaded walk and a rare two-run sacrifice-fly. Redshirt-junior right-hander Joey Zurawik, who began his college career at Texas Tech and has had two Tommy John surgeries, pitched the eighth inning.
