1 FALL 2012 NEWSLETTER
2 EVERY KID DESERVES A PLACE TO PLAY On diamonds and playgrounds, in dugouts and gymnasiums, children and youth learn the valuable life skills of teamwork and cooperation, discipline and dedication, respect and responsibility. These are the skills they will take with them forever to their families, their peers, their neighbourhoods and their jobs on a lifelong track to success. Growing up on the baseball diamonds in Langley, BC, I learned how to be a competitor, a teammate, and a hard worker. The skills I learned while playing baseball helped prepare me for many life circumstances. Every kid should get this opportunity. Brett Lawrie 13 Third Baseman, Toronto Blue Jays
3 A HOME OF THEIR OWN BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SOUTH COAST BC The Surrey chapter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC operates in the chronically underserved neighbourhood of Whalley, a high-needs area with 1,000 children living amidst crime and poverty. Operating in a temporary space, the Surrey chapter began in response to the urgent need for affordable after-school programs in the community. The Club s membership grew to the point that it was forced to cap at 160 children and youth until a permanent Clubhouse could be built. With the help of Jays Care s $50,000 investment, a stand-alone Jays Care Community Clubhouse is being installed this year and will help 90 more boys and girls make new friends, play sports, interact with positive role models, and make a lifetime of memories. Ace hangs out with the children from Ronald McDonald House in the Jays Care Community Clubhouse Playing with friends, being active every day, and getting the opportunity to be involved in organized sport is the right of every boy and girl in every community across Canada, regardless of financial circumstance. That is why Jays Care, in 2012 alone, invested more than $900,000 in dedicated, safe, youth spaces across the country, through its Field of Dreams granting program. Whether the funds are used to refurbish community baseball diamonds or to build Jays Care Community Clubhouses, Jays Care believes in equipping charitable and community groups with the resources necessary to reach more kids, more effectively. In 2011, Jays Care invested $250,000 in the Langley chapter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC, to subsidize the development of a fully-accessible Jays Care Community Clubhouse. This portable will allow the Club to serve over 100 kids each day, twice the capacity of its current programming space. The Clubhouse will open its doors to boys and girls in the Langley community in Fall Funds for these projects were made possible, in part, by the funds raised from our first-ever Charity Home Run Derby in Vancouver! At Boys and Girls Clubs, we know our job is to reach out to do more. When groups like Jays Care support our facility projects, it means that hundreds MORE kids will belong to a Boys and Girls Club this year! Those kids will have the sense of belonging and success they crave, and a strong foundation and the life skills they need to succeed and pursue their dreams. For that, we re grateful! Carolyn Tuckwell, President and CEO Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC With only 51% of Canadian municipalities providing community programs for at-risk youth, and even fewer offering discounted child fees,* Jays Care uses its capital grants to support organizations that remove financial barriers to sport and physical activity for children and youth. *2012 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card
4 ST. JOHN S MINOR BASEBALL ASSOCIATION St. John s Minor Baseball Association provides baseball programs for children and youth ages 5 to 18 in St. John s, Newfoundland. The Association has experienced significant growth over the past five years, with registration numbers climbing from 259 to 685 players. Jays Care s $125,000 investment will cover the installation of lights at Airport Heights Field, and extend the field to accommodate the growth of its bantam division. This renovation will allow more than 130 additional players to access the sport of baseball, and double the field usage during evening programming next season. The Field of Dreams grant to the Airport Heights Baseball Complex will provide a premier lit field to our evergrowing Bantam League, so they can have a field to call their own, and we can attract new players to the sport. Jays Care s presence in St. John s will go a long way towards promotion of baseball on the Island. Truly, your presence is now coast to coast FIELD OF DREAMS GRANT RECIPIENTS ORGANIZATION Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC Langley & Surrey, British Columbia East Nepean Baseball Association Ottawa, Ontario PROGRAMS FUNDED Building a stand-alone Jays Care Community Clubhouse Reconstructing two player dugouts Frank O Leary, Executive Director St. John s Minor A Baseball TORONTO KIWANIS BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club offers accessible and affordable programs for low-income families in the Cabbagetown and Regent Park communities, where 69 percent of the households they serve earn less than $20,000 annually. During 2010 and 2011, TKBGC s facility was renovated to add 80 per cent more square footage and accommodate double the capacity. In 2010, as many as 1,100 unique visitors were inspired to make healthy lifestyle choices through the Club s after-school programs. Jays Care s $100,000 investment in the TKBGC Capital Campaign subsidized the development of the new Jays Care gymnasium, which offers Regent Park youth a safe, supervised space to participate in athletic programming. Over 100 participants hit the streets of Toronto for an exciting day of exploration and competition. GREGG ZAUN Raised $7,700 During every Blue Jays home game, fans stopped by the Sportsnet broadcast booth, met announcer Gregg Zaun, got his autograph, and posed for a photo simply by making a donation to Jays Care. Special thanks go out to our other fantastic Fan Fundraisers: Buck Martinez and Pat Tabler from Sportsnet, Far Niente and FOUR restaurants, mopupduty.com and bluejaysnation.com! To learn more about hosting your own Fan Fundraiser, visit bluejays.com/fanfundraisers INSTANT REPLAY On August 22nd, the Jays Care Community Crew hosted 79 families living at Ronald McDonald House Toronto through their Home for Dinner program. It took 350 tortillas, 80 tomatoes, 44 kg of chicken, 30 kg of steak, 25 heads of lettuce, 22 avocados, 10 blocks of cheese, three hours and 30 volunteers to make a fajita dinner for 170 hungry and grateful people! Things got heated on August 31st, as Toronto Blue Jays players Ricky Romero, Henderson Alvarez, Moises Sierra, Chad Jenkins, Adeiny Hechavarria, and mascots Ace and Junior played an intense game of wheelchair baseball with kids from Holland Bloorview Children s Rehabilitation Hospital! On September 3rd, Sportsnet released a documentary, Diamonds in the Rough, narrated by Blue Jays pitcher Ricky Romero. This moving story follows 11 Rookie Leaguers from Toronto as they are given the lifechanging opportunity of participating in the Jr. RBI Classic in Kansas City! Visit the Video page of bluejays.com to watch the whole documentary. On July 28th and September 30th, Jays Care hosted its annual Garage Sale at Rogers Centre! As soon as gates opened, fans picked up Blue Jays swag, game-used equipment and autographed memorabilia at great prices! All together, the Garage Sales raised more than $37,000! On September 13th, Jays Care hosted its first-ever Charity Home Run Derby at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver, BC. Five teams of four raised funds all summer long, and collected more than $85,000 to support Jays Care s commitment to the children and youth in BC. Blue Jays alumni Joe Carter, Jesse Barfield, Kelly Gruber, Homer Bush and Lloyd Moseby were on hand to offer batting advice and cheer on the participants.
