2 College of Charleston Baseball Game Notes HEAD COACH CHAD HOLBROOK FIRST SEASON OVERALL RECORD: (.660) With more than 20 years of coaching experience recruiting and producing top-level talent, being a part of two national championship teams and making six trips to the College World Series and 17 NCAA Regional appearances, Chad Holbrook was named head coach of the College of Charleston baseball program on July 20, We are excited to add Chad, Jenn, Reece and Cooper to the College of Charleston family, CofC Director of Athletics Matt Roberts said. It is a tribute to the tremendous heritage and tradition created by our incredible baseball alumni that our program can attract a coach with the talent, experience and national reputation of Chad Holbrook. It s a great day to be a Cougar. Holbrook, 46, previously served five seasons as head coach at the University of South Carolina, compiling a overall record and.654 winning percentage. During his time at the helm of the baseball program, the Gamecocks made three NCAA Regional appearances, with two NCAA Super Regionals in 2013 and What an honor to be the head baseball coach at the College of Charleston, Holbrook said. It is a privilege to be associated with the College s incredible tradition of excellence that I have admired for years. My family and I can t wait to entrench ourselves in one of the most unique communities in the country. I am especially looking forward to meeting our players and the passionate alumni who make Charleston such a special place. Our goal is to create a championship program that excites both our student-athletes and fans alike. That journey starts today. Holbrook is the only active coach to have been to eight NCAA Super Regionals, made 6 CWS and 5 national championship appearances and won 2 national championships. Chad Holbrook is a great addition to the College. I want to first thank our search committee for their hard work during this process. I greatly appreciate their insights and their recommendations, College of Charleston President Glenn F. McConnell said. Obviously, Coach Holbrook brings a wealth of experience and an incredible résumé of success. I know he will do big things on the diamond. However, what impressed me most about Coach Holbrook is his vision of modern-day student-athletes and how they are woven into the fabric of campus, academically and socially. Coach Holbrook s emphasis on civic engagement and community service perfectly reflects our institution s core values in producing graduates that will make a difference in the world. Plain and simple, Chad Holbrook will be a great fit on our campus a premier coach for a premier program. The junior catcher now leads the Cougars with three long balls. ON-BASE MACHINES Dupree Hart has reached base in each of the Cougars first 12 games, while Danny Wondrack had an 11-game streak snapped on Sunday. Hart and Luke Morgan have each posted five multi-hit games - with Morgan carrying an eight-game hit streak, and Hart seeing his 10-game stretch come to an end on Sunday. BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK JACKS The Cougars hit the program s first back-to-back-to-back home runs since 2011 on Febuary 24, when Luke Morgan, Logan McRae, and Danny Wondrack led off the third inning of CofC s 11-4 win over LIU Brooklyn with three straight solo homers. LOVE AT THE TOP Senior Carter Love has been oustanding in the early going this season, picking up two saves on the opening weekend to enter the week tied for 50th in the national rankings. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound righty has thrown 14 scoreless innings over five appearances, and with two and one-third shutout frames last Tuesday, became the program s all-time leader in relief outings. Love now ranks third on the program s all-time list with 18 career saves. SLICK-FIELDING DUO Middle infield tandem Dupree Hart and Luke Manzo have been nothing short of superb over the first 12 games of the season, combining for 37 putouts, 62 assists, and just one error for a combined fielding percentage of.990. Hart has been flawless with a perfect fielding percentage in 57 attempts thus far. FRONT FOOT START The Cougars got off to their first 3-0 start since the 2012 season with a sweep of Southeast Missouri State on the opening weekend. CofC s pitching and defense lead the charge, allowing runs in only three of 27 innings while committing just one error in the field. PRESEASON PHENOM Redshirt junior Logan McRae has been tabbed to a pair of Preseason All-American teams following nods to the Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA Preseason All-America First Teams. The sweet-swinging slugger was also named the CAA s Preseason Player of the Year after pacing the Cougars with 17 home runs and 63 RBIs last season. COUGARS TABBED THIRD IN CAA With a plethora of veteran leadership and an abundance of offensive talent, the Cougars are tabbed to finish third in the race for the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship. WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE The Cougars are likely to benefit from a bevy of experience - both in the dugout and on the field - this season. Coach Holbrook and his staff boast more than 30 years of head coaching experience, including an 18-year stint at the helm of the Erskine College baseball program for assistant head coach Kevin Nichols.
