2 his first Hofstra victory Liberty played fellow CAA foe Old Dominion on Tuesday, and won 7-6 This series marks the third series of the 2005 campaign for Hofstra, and the first for Liberty. Liberty has only played the one game so far in the 2005 season. STREAKS AND OTHER Hofstra heads into this weekend on a two-game road winning streak Junior Mike Walsh ended last season on a 13-game hitting streak including three home runs in the last week and a half of play and a CAA Player-of-the-Week award He has continued his streak this season, hitting in all six games to increase his streak to 19 games Walsh also leads the Pride in batting with a.458 batting average Senior Josh Stewart and junior Josh Stern have also hit in all six games. Stewart and Stern are right behind Walsh with.448 and.400 batting averages, respectively. JOSH 2 Both senior Josh Stewart and junior Josh Stern had a monster weekend at VMI. Stern batted.583 (7-12) through the three games with three doubles, a triple, a home run, and five RBI. His on-base percentage was.600% and his slugging average sat at 1.250%. He also had a stolen base and committed no errors in the field. His overall batting average now stands at.400, right behind first baseman Mike Walsh at.458 and centerfielder Josh Stewart at.448. Stern also leads the team with four doubles. Stewart hit.529 (9-17) through the three games last weekend. He hit three doubles and had three RBI while accumulating an on-base percentage of.529%. His overall batting average of.448 ranks second on the Pride. BEGINNINGS. For the fifth consecutive year, Hofstra has traveled in February to play a top Division I program in a premier conference. In 2000, the Pride played two games in Boca Raton, FL, facing Florida Atlantic out of the Atlantic Sun Conference. This season Florida Atlantic is pre-season ranked #28/NCBWA poll/#30 Collegiate Baseball as they finished 2004 with a record. In 2001, Hofstra started out the season in the Southwest taking on Mountain West favorite New Mexico Lobos and Sun Belt Conference member New Mexico State. In 2002, College of Charleston appeared on the Hofstra schedule for the first time ever. The Pride opened the 2004 season with a trip to Charleston. The Cougars are out of the Southern Conference and they won that title in 2004; they finished with a record. This season, Baseball America has them pre-season ranked #29. In 2003, Hofstra faced a SEC (Southeastern Conference) team for the first time in school history, when they played a threegame set with then ranked #23 Florida Gators in Gainesville, FL. It was the first time the two schools had met. This season, the Gators are pre-season ranked #15 Baseball America/#21 NCBWA/#22 Collegiate Baseball. In addition to the College of Charleston, the Pride also played Auburn in February of It marked the second time in school history; the Pride would face a SEC school. Auburn was ranked #10 last year when they swept the Pride marks the third year in a row, Hofstra took on a SEC team and the second time it faced Auburn in the month of February. Auburn was pre-season picked 49th by Baseball America and had received votes in the NCBWA poll. WEATHER CONDITIONS Hofstra hopes the early start will allow them to play more than 50 games. The Pride has 56 games scheduled, and six are in the books already. In 2004, the Pride had 16 games postponed, cancelled, or rescheduled due to snow, rain, or poor field conditions. In fact their first game at the College of Charleston started on a Saturday, and finished on a Monday. After Liberty, Hofstra will take a 12-day break until its next series at Delaware State, March 4-6. CAPTAINS OF LEADERSHIP Seniors Josh Stewart and Brett Stambolian and juniors Ricky Caputo and Mike Walsh will take over the reigns of leadership for the Pride and serve as Team Captains. Additionally, Caputo, Walsh, and Stewart led the Pride with the top three batting averages. Stambolian is coming back from an injury which kept him out most of the 2004 season.
3 AND THEN THERE WERE THREE The 2005 Hofstra squad features only three seniors. Senior centerfielder Josh Stewart returns for his senior season after playing one year at St. John s and the last two at Hofstra. His batting average has steadily risen, and he finished last season with.330. He stole a team-high 16 bases, and hit 16 doubles, third on the all-time list for doubles in a season by a Pride player. Stewart continues to provide leadership and a strong bat, usually in the leadoff spot. Senior Brett Stambolian looks to rebound from an injury that plagued most of his 2004 season. Outfielder Steve Conley will be battling the newcomers for a starting position in the crowded outfield. Conley started nine games, but played in 25 providing relief at key times. So far in 2005, he has played in four and started one game. THE SOPHOMORE CLASS GROWS UP The six juniors on this year s squad all made an impact in 2004 as sophomores. Ricky Caputo broke the hit record, and led the Pride in several categories. He had a.361 batting average, eight homeruns, 202 at-bats, and 73 hits(a new school record). He also entertained 10 and 15-game hitting streaks and 23 multi-hit games. For his efforts, he was selected 2 nd team All-CAA. Catcher/utility/1B Mike Walsh also was a breakout star as a sophomore. Selected first team All-CAA and CAA Player-of-the-Week (5/17), Walsh hit for the cycle, hit his first career grandslam, and ended the season batting.330. Defensively, he had the most putouts, 326, and the second best fielding average with.981%. Catcher Steve Oliveri had a strong season behind the plate and at the plate. His batting average ended at.286 with 40 hits. He had a.970% fielding average in Shortstop Josh Stern looks to return to the lineup after a late injury in 2004 kept him out of the last six games. He ended 2004 batting.270 with 11 doubles and led the team with seven sacrifice flies. Stern is looking to improve his average from the last two years. He batted.294 as a freshman. Eric Balson is another outfielder who will be battling for duties in the crowded outfield. Balson started at Auburn last year going one-for-two with a double, and RBI and a run scored. Right-handed pitcher David Huth will be adding wins to his column this season as several of his outings in 2004 were close games. He threw 25 strikeouts and 69.2 innings, fourth on the Hofstra all-time list for a season. Huth also subbed in at times in the infield, playing third and first base in eight games. FAB FRESHMEN TURNED SOPHS Sophomore starting pitcher Charlie Frago looks to build on his freshman campaign, as he ended last season going 1-1 on the last week. He won at St. John s, while losing at Old Dominion. Frago had the most victories for any Pride pitcher in 2004 with four. He threw a team-high 73 innings while posting a 6.04 ERA. He threw the team s only complete game, a victory over Quinnipiac. He struck out 21 batters over the course of the season. Sophomore right fielder and CAA Rookie-of-the-Week (4/5/04) George Athanasopoulos will be continuing his hitting ways, also fighting for a spot in the crowded outfield. This sophomore stayed over.300 in batting most of A small injury kept him out of the last five games, but he looks to rebound this season and smash the triple record; a record he tied in 2004 with four. In 2004, Athanasopoulos batted.302 with 11 doubles, four triples, 29 RBIs, and three home runs a strong freshman campaign that can only lead to a better sophomore season. Andy Campana played in 42 games in 2004, playing mostly second base and left field, but he remained a staple throughout the season. He ll be battling for a starting position in the infield this season. He batted.262 in Right-handed pitcher Jeff Denlea will be called upon by Coach Dotolo to come into the game and finish it off, a position he was leaning towards last season. Denlea had two saves for the Pride and posted a 2-2 record with a 7.15 ERA. He will be looking to decrease his ERA, and earn a few more saves. He also appeared in 27 games in 2004, a new Hofstra record, and threw 27 strikeouts. Four players ended 2004 with batting averages over.300. Ricky Caputo.361 Josh Stewart.330 Mike Walsh.330 George Athanasopoulos.302. Five players have begun 2005 with batting averages over.300. Mike Walsh.458 Josh Stewart.448 Josh Stern.400 George Athanasopoulos.400 Ricky Caputo.370.
4 NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Hofstra features 13 newcomers on the 2005 roster. Two are transfers and pitchers, 11 are true freshmen. OF/1B Shawn DeYoung is the only walk-on to make it to the squad. Some of the newcomers saw action at Auburn and VMI. Freshman Anthony Sarno got the start as designated hitter in game one at Auburn. He went 0-3, and was replaced by freshman Matt Kougasian who got his first collegiate single in the ninth. Freshman pitcher Mike Xydias pitched two innings in relief in game one at Auburn, giving up four runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts, but earned his first collegiate win at VMI in game two. He entered the game in relief of starter Ryan Dunn, pitching 1.1 innings, and giving up only one hit. Freshman Matt Kougasian got the start at DH in game two at Auburn, but went 0-2. He also went 0-2 in game two at VMI, subbing for George Athanasopoulos at DH. Freshman pitcher Dan Lux pitched at Auburn, but only faced three batters. In game three, George Athanasopoulos started at DH and freshman David Cole started in right field, going 2-for-4 with two singles. Those singles were Cole s first collegiate hits. Cole also played all three games at VMI in right field, getting a hit and three RBI. Sophomore transfer Will DeVito got to see action on the mound in game three at Auburn, relieving Ryan Dunn for the remaining three and a third innings. He only gave up two runs on three hits with two walks. He earned his first Hofstra win in game three of the VMI series, a game he started and Hofstra won DeVito pitched 5.1 innings, allowing only four runs on 10 hits, while striking out three. His overall ERA stands at 6.23 and he has a 1-1 record. Other freshmen who have seen some action in the games, but haven t had a hit yet include John Boyd III, Scott Rader, and Greg Polius. Pitchers Greg Lane, Anthony Sarno, and Mike Xydias all saw action at VMI. THE PROBABLE ROTATION The rotation will probably stay similar to the setup through the first six games Sophomore lefty Charlie Frago could take the mound first or junior David Huth, or sophomore Ryan Dunn. Ryan Dunn had two good outings with no-decisions at Auburn and VMI. He leads the Pride with a 6.17 ERA and 11.2 innings pitched. He has started two games. At VMI, he started game two and threw 6.2 innings, allowing only four runs on eight hits. Huth and Frago have struggled a little bit as of late, but look to rebound at Liberty. Frago leads the Pride with five strikeouts. Sophomore Jeff Denlea earned his first save of 2005, when he pitched the ninth inning of the 5-4 victory. Denlea threw one strikeout in the inning. In 2003 vs. the GATORS, in 2004 vs. the TIGERS, in 2005 vs. the TIGERS 2003 in Gainesville, Mike Walsh went 1-4 with two runs scored, shortstop Josh Stern went 2-3 with two runs scored, and catcher Steve Oliveri went 3-4 with two RBI s in Auburn saw Josh Stewart go 2-10 with four RBIs and a run scored, George Athanasopoulos go 2-11 with a run scored, and Eric Balson went 1-5 with a RBI and two runs scored in Auburn saw Josh Stewart go 4-for-12 with three runs scored, Mike Walsh went 6-for-11 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI, and George Athanasopoulos went 5-for-9 with a double and a run scored. THE FIRST TIME SINCE The Pride won back-to-back road games at VMI; they haven t done that since last April when they won two-in-a-row at Towson. The Pride scored 21 runs in Sunday s win; the Pride hasn t scored 21 runs in a game since the 1997 season when it defeated St. Francis, The largest scoring attack last season was a 16-4 win over Quinnipiac at University Field. Charlie Frago threw a complete game for the win. WHEN DO THEY GET HOME? Hofstra won t start its home season until Wednesday, March 9, when it will host the St. Peter s College Peacocks at 3 p.m. at University Field. The difficult Colonial Athletic Association schedule begins at the end of March, when Hofstra will travel to University of Delaware in Newark, DE. The Blue Hens were picked to finish fourth in the CAA. Hofstra will host the Wingate Inn Invitational the second weekend in March featuring Cornell University and University at Albany. The first home CAA series will feature UNC Wilmington April 1-3. Hofstra will play 13 road games before their home schedule begins.
5 SCOUTING LIBERTY Hofstra and Liberty have never met. Liberty is a member of the Big South Conference, the same conference VMI belongs to. The Flames are lead by top returning players outfielder Phillip Laurent, and infielders Chad Miller and Carlos Garcia. Laurent, a junior, leads the Flames with a.500 batting average after one game. Miller, also a junior, Garcia, a senior, and freshman Travis Johnson, all follow Laurent with a.333 average each. Senior hurler Chris Zuvich earned the win over Old Dominion on Tuesday, pitching four innings and allowing only two runs. He also has five strikeouts. All the members of the coaching staff are Liberty graduates.
