26 MICHAEL M. CROW M ichael M. Crow became the 16th President of Arizona State University on July 1, At ASU, Crow is focused on building a new type of American university, one that is directly engaged in the economic and social success of its region. In addition, the university will pursue unique research and creative excellence focused on the large intellectual questions of our time, as well as those questions central to the building of a sustainable and globally correct environment and economy for Arizona. Prior to joining ASU, Crow was Executive Vice Provost of Columbia University, where he also was Professor of Science and Technology Policy in the School of International and Public Affairs. As Executive Vice Provost, Crow oversaw Columbia s research enterprise, technology and innovation transfer operations, strategic initiative program, interdisciplinary program development and an assortment of special projects. He played the lead role in the creation of the Columbia Earth Institute (CEI), a leader in earth systems teaching and research. CEI is a federation of eight research and teaching centers: Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Goddard Institute for Space Studies at Columbia, Biosphere 2 Center, Center for Environmental Research and Conservation, Earth Engineering Center, International Research Institute for Climate Prediction, Center for International Earth Science Information Network and Laboratory of Populations. He also helped found Columbia s Center for Science, Policy and Outcomes (CSPO) in Washington, D.C., an intellectual center dedicated to linking science and technology to desired social, economic, environmental President and other outcomes. Crow holds a bachelor s degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies from Iowa State University (1977) and a doctorate degree in Public Administration (Science and Technology Policy) from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University (1985). Prior to moving to Columbia in 1991, he was Institute Professor of Technology Management and Director of the Institute for Physical Research and Technology at Iowa State University. At Columbia he served as Vice Provost, Vice Provost for Research, and Associate Vice Provost for Science and Engineering before becoming Executive Vice Provost in He is the author of many articles and the author or editor of several books relating to the analysis of research organizations, technology transfer, strategic R&D management, research universities, science and technology policy and the practice and theory of public policy. GENE SMITH G ene Smith was appointed as Arizona State University s 18th director of athletics on July 27, Smith arrived at ASU as no stranger to collegiate athletics, serving as athletics director at Iowa State University for seven years prior to coming to ASU. Smith was also the athletics director at Eastern Michigan University ( ). In his three years at Arizona State, Smith has started his own legacy of success in Tempe. He has hired nationally regarded coaches in football, soccer, wrestling, women s golf, water polo and volleyball while overseeing each of ASU s 22-sports programs, many of which have seen unprecedented competitive success the past three years. Smith also helped to finish a $30 million capital campaign, which in part funded the construction of the $19 million Ed and Nadine Carson Student-Athlete Center, completed in The state-of-the-art facility affords ASU one of the finest student-athlete centers in the country, including perhaps the premier weight room and sports rehabilitation areas. In his first three years at ASU Smith, who was named the 2003 Division I West Region Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) has created a winning environment dedicated to building stronger programs and providing student-athletes the opportunity to be successful academically, athletically and socially. With 341 of 470 student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or higher (Fall 02), and a major leap in student-athlete graduation rates, the Sun Devils also continued to excel on the fields of play. In addition, ASU produced its first three individual national champions since 1996: Eric Larkin in wrestling, Alejandro Canizares in golf and Joona Puhakka in diving. Significant competitive achievement has been realized in every Olympic sport and ASU earned a No. 10 ranking in the annual NACDA Athletics Cup (formerly Sears Cup). While at Iowa State, Smith engineered exceptional financial and competitive performance that propelled the Cyclone athletic department to the forefront of the Big 12 Conference and diligently prepared it for the 21st century. Promising to make Iowa State one of the premier athletic programs in the nation, Gene Smith began his tenure as Iowa State s 12th athletics director on July 1, Smith is a past president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) who oversaw an athletic department transformation during his tenure in Ames. The construction of new facilities, record-breaking fundraising, exemplary athletic-academic achievement and recruitment of staff whose performance has affirmed his choices underscore Smith s legacy at Iowa State. ISU s student-athletes were community leaders, participating in a variety of local and regional initiatives that demonstrate the athletics department s proactive outreach under Smith s leadership. Smith s strong reputation among his peers was affirmed in June 1994 when the Notre Dame graduate was named president of NACDA. In 1991, Smith was appointed to a four-year term on NACDA s 32-member executive committee. In 1992, he was elected third vice president of the organization and was named to the Division I-A Executive Committee. He was elected first vice president of NACDA in Smith has also served on the NCAA President s Commission Liaison Committee, the NCAA Executive Committee, the NCAA Men s Basketball Committee and the NCAA Working Committee to Study Basketball Issues. He was appointed to the NCAA s Management Council in May of 1996 and continues to serve on that committee. He is also a member of the NCAA Infractions Committee. In addition, Smith is a member of the Fiesta Bowl 62 Director of Athletics Board in Tempe as well as a number of Pacific-10 Conference committees. He serves as the vice president of the Pac-10 Executive Committee and the chair of the Pac-10 Football Officiating Committee and is a member of the Pac-10 Selection, Athletics Directors Revenue Sharing, Rose Bowl Management and Bowl (Ad Hoc) committees. He is a member of the Honors Court of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, the NCAA Infractions Committee, the NCAA Football Rules Committee, the NCAA Administrative Review Committee and the BCS Athletic Director s Advisory Committee. Prior to his arrival at Iowa State, Smith served as athletic director at Eastern Michigan University for seven years. Smith joined the EMU staff in 1983 as assistant athletic director for non-revenue sports. He was named interim executive athletic director in 1985 and was elevated to the position permanently on June 25, Smith earned a bachelor s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame in He earned three varsity football letters as a defensive end at Notre Dame and was a member of the Associated Press 1973 national championship team. Smith also served as an assistant football coach at Notre Dame from , helping the squad to its 1977 undisputed national championship. He then spent two years as a marketing representative for IBM prior to joining the Eastern Michigan staff in April A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Smith earned eight letters in football, basketball and track while attending Chanel High School and was the football squad s MVP as a senior. Smith, who was born Dec. 18, 1955, and his wife Sheila, have four children: Matt, Nicole, Lindsey and Summer; and two grandchildren: Marshall and Steele. Sheila, a 1976 Canadian Olympian basketball player, holds a doctorate in Higher Education Administration and currently serves as Senior Vice President for the ASU Foundation.
