Someone who cares not only about himself but about others as well. Someone who wears the maroon-andgold uniform with pride on the field and inspires others off it. To be a Sun Devil is to live the dream. For every ASU player who steps onto the field, there is a small child who dreams to join him. Being a role model is both a reward and a responsibility. It is an experience to be remembered and cherished as you continue to grow as a person. It is a chance to make a difference in someone s life to help people create an opportunity to better themselves. Your commitment extends not only to your team but to the community at large. It is a wonderful thing to give back to the community that supports you and your efforts. Members of the Arizona State baseball team take part in the Guadalupe Project each week and teach baseball and life skills to the youth of Guadalupe. The T.A.L.E.S. Speaker s Bureau arranges for student-athletes to speak to children in local area schools and community youth groups throughout the year. Topics include doing well in school, reading, staying away from drugs and other negative influences, and the importance of participating in sports as a healthy and fun activity. ASU baseball, along with the Tempe Diablos, co-sponsors free clinics for Valley youth during the fall as well. Over the years the ASU baseball program has also made appearances at Arizona Diamondbacks games, spoken at countless schools and participated in the Lou Gehrig s Disease 5K walk and run. Coach Murphy has given back to the community in a number of areas, including founding the Guadalupe Project, and each year he participates in an annual charity boxing event with Father Joe. The event is commonly known as The Priest vs. the Devil. The Arizona State student-athlete has many outlets to reach out to the surrounding community and give back. As the saying goes, You only get what you give. SUN DEVIL BASEBALL THE TRADITION 52
