1 CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION TO: FROM: SUBJECT: Recreation and Parks Commission Mark Odell, Urban Designer Historic Route 66 Signage June 26, 218 The purpose of this meeting with the Recreation and Parks Commission is to present the preliminary locations for the sign standards and roadway signage for historic Route 66 on North Santa Monica Boulevard. Proposed signage for the historic Route 66 Route along was reviewed by the Cultural Heritage Commission on October 1, 217 and the City Council/Cultural Heritage Commission Liaison Committee Meeting on October 3th 217. At a subsequent Liaison Committee Meeting on May 21, 218, the Liaison selected a final preferred design and directed staff to consult the Traffic and Parking Commission on the placement of street sign markers and to present the proposal to the Recreation and Parks Commission. Staff had presented the proposal to the Traffic and Parking Commission at a public hearing on June 7, 218. Discussion Route 66 is a historic motorway and was once the primary highway from America s interior to the West Coast. This roadway is 2,45 miles long and has played a key role in United States history since its commencement of operation in Route 66, or U.S. Highway 66, in Southern California is the western terminus for this cross-country highway system developed from 1926 until This historic thoroughfare is one of the earliest automobile transport routes in the United States that was greatly publicized during the early years of construction and was instrumental in bringing much of the burgeoning tourist industry to southern California. The mid-i 93 s era stretch of Route 66 into the Los Angeles area began at Pasadena s Colorado Boulevard and connected to a number of existing roadways as the route made its way to downtown Los Angeles and beyond. From Los Angeles the roadway followed Sunset Boulevard to connect with as it headed through Beverly Hills and terminated in Santa Monica at the Pacific Ocean. Recognition of as Historic Route 66 is a commemorative act only, intended to celebrate and honor the roadway s place in Beverly Hills history and increase public awareness amongst residents and visitors; its commemoration is not a formal act of historic designation. The City Council/Cultural Heritage Commission Liaison Committee reviewed the potential for installing signage along to indicate the location of historic Route 66. The liaisons offered recommendations regarding the type and design for the signage proposed and suggested that the project be reviewed by the Traffic and Parking Commission for their input with regard to the final locations for the historic roadway markers as the proposal moves forward in the approval process. The roadway standards or pole signs were suggested to be placed every three-to-four blocks for the length of in Beverly Hills. Staff is reviewing this recommendation in relation to existing infrastructure and street signage, and presented these options at the recent Traffic and Parking Commission meeting. The TPC was supportive of the proposed signage and the locations preliminarily

In addition, the Liaison Committee suggested the placement of roadway markers or signage painted on the road bed within the bike lane on North Santa roadway markers. At this time, staff requests the Commission s input on locations for these Parks Commission for any pertinent recommendations regarding the street sign markers and Commission s expertise regarding Santa Monica Boulevard and its reconstruction, the Liaison Committee forwarded the matter to the Traffic and Parking Commission and the Recreation and Monica Boulevard only at the entry and exit points of the City. Due to the Traffic and Parking selected and provided by engineers in the Transportation Section of the Community to the Cultural Heritage Commission for final approval. The Historic Route 66 Signage project will return for final review by the Liaison Committee and Next Steps Recreation and Parks Commission
