Well, that is how many days and the number of hours each day that Scottish endurance cyclist Mark Beaumont sailed for to break the world record for travelling around the world on a bike. The 33 year-old from Dundee in the east of Scotland finished from Paris on the 2 nd July attempting to cycle around the world in less than 80 days. 2 The inspiration for Mr Beaumont s world record trip was the character Phileas Fogg who managed to wander the world in less than three months in Jules Verne s novel Around the World in 80 Days. After reaching the end of the journey at the Arc de Troimphe on September 18 th Mr Beaumont got off his bike, took off his helmet and snatched his wife and two daughters. It s been the longest two and half months of my life. To get back here in 78 days is a dream he said. 3 Mr Beaumont s round the world odyssey was divided into four stages, the 1 st took him through Europe to Russia and Mongolia and ending in Johannesburg. The 2 nd involved cycling across Australia and up New Zealand. The 3 rd stage began in Anchorage, Alaska and finished in Halifax, Nova Scotia before the final 4 th stage involved him cycling from Lisbon in Portugal through Italy and back to Paris. 4 On his 78 day journey, Mr Beaumont enjoyed falls, physical hardship, punctures, insect bites, heat exhaustion and even required emergency dentistry from one of his back up team! He said that he had found himself in some very low and dark places at times and had cried at least four times mostly through enjoyment. 5 However, although Mark Beaumont called his world breaking journey the most punishing challenge I have ever put my body and mind through, there was one person who wasn t that impressed. Well, that is how many days and the number of hours each day that Scottish endurance cyclist Mark Beaumont pedalled for to break the world record for travelling around the world on a bike.
