Last week alone, three workers were eaten by tigers and by the end of the honey season in June the average death total is around 20. As the season 4: in late April that means that on average two workers will die every week most of them killed by tigers, crocodiles or poisonous snakes. Why do these people risk their lives by collecting wild honey? Well the answer is simple money. The north-west region of India is very poor and the honey is extremely valuable and can 5: the workers more money in one 15 day trip than they could usually earn in six months in other jobs such as fishing. Mr Raptan one of the honey collectors 6: this year said of the job, It is very dangerous, but I have no land and no alternative. 4 Another worker Mr Gyan, aged 82, described an attack by one of the park s Bengali tigers that happened last week. Mr Gyan who is covered in bites, scars and 7: from the tiger attack said, The tiger hit me in the chest and threw me on my back. He was standing over me we were face to face.
