North Bristol SusCom
North Bristol SusCom Two key strands to our work Strategic Development (Influence) what we want others to do Sustainable Transport Ac(vity (Delivery) what we can do ourselves We promote travelling by cycling, walking, car sharing/car clubs, buses, trains, and electric vehicles (cars, buses, bikes). Meet together bi-monthly share ideas, opportuni(es, informa(on, challenges Our members are regularly recognised for their work through the annual Travelwest business awards
Aztec West this morning
Issues around Aztec West area The average weekday traffic in June 2016 entering Aztec West was 7,957 vehicles.
Issues around Aztec West area
Issues around Aztec West area The current roadworks are making the situa4on worse but I m willing to deal with the addi4onal delays if the situa4on is improved in the longerterm, but this remains to be seen. ROADWORKS S4ll no safe or viable cycle route from Almondsbury to Filton. A dedicated cycleway from Thornbury to Bristol is needed Cycling this route is done mainly by people who are into cycling anyway, rather than it being an obvious op4on for all CYCLING ROUTES In general, public transport links to Aztec West are quite poor It is a shame to learn that the Kings Ferry contract will end, I hope the new service will be longer las4ng and s4ll have the same level of service, compe44ve pricing etc BUS SERVICES
It s gonna get worse if we do nothing
Strategic Transport Investments to 2036 In 2015, the four West of England Councils started a major study to shape the future of our transport network over the next 20 years Summary document produced and contains recommended package of 7.5bn worth of investments to tackle current issues and future requirements. Consulta^on alongside Joint Spa^al Plan looking at where and how we can accommodate 105,000 new homes and 82,500 jobs to 2036.
Strategic Transport Investments to 2036 Package of investment includes smarter choices ac^vity to promote walking, cycling and new technology to move around alongside corridors of integrated mul^ modal investment to tackle conges^on and promote a shib in trip making from the private car onto more sustainable modes.
Strategic Transport Investments to 2036 Corridors in the Joint Transport plan include Weston-super-Mare to Bristol via the A38 Bath to Bristol Corridor Yate and the East Fringe to Bristol North Fringe and Severnside to Bristol
Current Projects Updates Motorway Network Cycling & Walking Aztec West Roundabout Metrobus Project Q&A
Highways England Sean Walsh Asset Manager
Highways England Government Owned Company-April 2015 Manage the Strategic Road Network (SRN) in England. Locally: M4 Severn Bridges to J15 M5 J9-30 M32 A4 in Avonmouth A46/A4 to Bath A36 south of Bath 16
Highways England An enabler of growth in that we facilitate the strategic movement of goods and people via maintenance and improvement of the SRN. We inform the planning process in order that growth does not result in a severe impact on the SRN 17
Smart Motorways M4/M5 Opened in Jan 2014 Three elements to the scheme: Controlled motorway through M5 J15 All Lane Running on M4/M5 Approaches to J15 (M4 westbound and M5 northbound) Dynamic Hard Shoulder (M M ) 18
Scheme Objectives Improve safety-reduce incidents through the scheme. Improve journey time reliability Offset detrimental environmental effects via mitigation where possible Provide Value for Money
One Year After Opening Findings (POPE Review) Safety ü 50% reduction in collision rates in opening year ü There have been no fatal or serious collisions since the scheme opened.
Journey time Reliability & Benefit üreliability has improved M4-M5 in both peaks üreliability has improved AM for M5-M4 X? Slight journey time disbenefit in opening year against a negligible benefit forecast. Smart motorways works best in periods of congestion. Congestion was less than forecast
Environmental Impact ügreenhouse gas have reduced by 2% against a forecast increase üflows are lower that forecast so impact on noise better than expected ülandscape mitigation has been implemented
Value for Money Scheme cost 77.6 million Forecast of safety and reliability benefits assessed at million Too early to tell- Another review five years after opening
Cycling Designated Fund 100 million nationally to: Remove the barriers posed by the SRN Encourage cycling for those who currently do not see it as an option Encourage modal shift Schemes must have benefits to cost ratio >1 and we still have to have a free flowing network.
Junction 16 Have to manage the aspiration of all our customers including NMU and motorists Pinch point scheme had provided a facility but scope of project left a gap on the southbound on slip road Four crossing option considered but BCR<1. Costs high because of interface with managed motorways infrastructure. One crossing option pursued as a priority but may well consider options again in context of South Glos. A38 study
Improved NMU & Cycling provision at J16 26
M49 Intermediate Junction Will facilitate significant numbers of jobs and growth over next 30 years. Decision to fund the junction in RIS1 ( ) Options for location have been considered. Announcement imminent. Construction commences
Projects: A38 Walking & Cycling Corridor South Glos Council has commissioned a review of cycle facili(es along the A38 corridor between Thornbury and the South Glos/Bristol Boundary. The feasibility study will examine the current cyclist and pedestrian provision in the study area, iden(fy gaps in provision, iden(fy op(ons and make recommenda(ons for addressing those gaps. It is hoped Bristol will undertake a similar study in 2017/18 looking at the A38 Corridor from south Glos/Bristol Boundary to the City Centre.
Poten^al Strategic Transport Improvements* *For Illustra^on purposes only this map does not represent exact routes/stops but illustrates the types of mul^ modal investment that could take place across the area
Projects: Aztec West Roundabout Part of 4 junc(on package to mi(gate traffic impact on A38 from new developments Addi(onal lanes of traffic capacity, two lane flow for all key traffic movements Pedestrian/cycle access and crossing improvements On schedule - comple(on due Autumn 2017.
