3 Important Event Day Notes 1. Before The Ride It is your responsibility to ensure your bike is tuned up and ready to ride the distance prior to Ride Day. Please see Page 9 for recommended retailers to service your bike. START LOCATION: West Langley Hall is located at St, Langley, BC V1M 2Y9 ARRIVAL TIME: All cyclists are asked to arrive at West Langley Hall by 7:30am. Parking is NOT permitted in the parking lot at West Langley Hall. Please park on the residential streets nearby and walk or ride to the venue. There is parking available on 93 Avenue, east of 208 Street. Cyclists MUST check in at REGISTRATION before the ride and pick up your Cycle for Sight jersey. You can also drop off cash and cheque donations at the registration table. Each offline donation must be accompanied with a donation form available on the website. After your ride please make sure that you check out at the Registration desk. Velofix will be onsite at the event and will be offering complimentary bike checks starting at 7:15am. Bike checks will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis (cyclists are responsible for the cost of any parts required). Cyclists will be asked to change into their 2018 Cycle for Sight jerseys upon arrival at the event. There will be access to washrooms for changing. Champions will be asked to wear their Champion sun sleeves and the Top Team will be asked to wear their Top Team socks. Please bring your change of clothes and shoes for after the ride to West Langley Hall. You will be able to check your bag before the ride. Cycling shoes are NOT permitted inside West Langley Hall. For a complete list of items to bring on event day see Page 7. Upon registering you will receive a license plate with our emergency contact number listed on it. You can enter it into your phone now Jane Caddick Please call this number in the event you have a mechanical breakdown or go off course. We recommend that you carry a cell phone and a route map with you in the event that you need to call and report your location. We have route support vehicles that will come and help you. At registration, all riders will also be assigned a starting group. Please only approach the Start Line when your group is called. If you are bringing your guide dog to the event and would like a volunteer to watch your dog while you ride please Jane Caddick at jcaddick@ffb.ca at least one week prior to the event.
4 2. The Ride ROAD SAFETY: Please be aware this event is on a shared roadway course. Event cyclists will have the right-of-way at intersections controlled by a certified traffic control person. At all other times, cyclist must obey rules of the road. Use caution at all times and be prepared for the possibility of pedestrians, non-event vehicles, non-registered cyclists and even animals on the course. ROUTE CLOSING TIME: The route is a 30km loop that you can choose to do between 1 4 times. You must start your final loop prior to 12:30pm. The route will begin to close at 12:30pm and no cyclists will be allowed to start another loop. SHORT CUT: There is one short-cut option for riders who do not want to climb the Armstrong Road hill. There will be a sign indicating the turn for the short cut. Taking the shortcut will reduce your route by approximately 5km. You will also miss the Armstrong Hill rest stop. REST STOPS & WASHROOM: Rest Stops will be located at the top of Armstrong Hill and at West Langley Hall. There is only a washroom available at West Langley Hall Rest Stop. Armstrong Hill Rest Stop will be operational until approximately 1:00pm. However, when the volunteers leave there will be water jugs left at this location for riders doing 4 loops. ROUTE MAP: Directional signage will be posted along the route but you should still have a route map with you just in case. Route maps will also be available at the Information tent on event day. The route map with turn by turn directions is also available on our website. RAILWAY CROSSINGS: There are 3 railway crossings on this route. Riders must dismount to cross. Obey all crossing signals and watch/listen for oncoming trains. Cycle for Sight support vehicles will be on route with you all day for extra support.
5 3. After The Ride CHECK OUT: After your ride please make sure that you check out at the Registration desk and collect your beer/wine tickets. All riders will receive a complimentary BBQ lunch generously provided by Cioffi s and Frank & Silvia Coletta and their amazing team of volunteers. Your lunch ticket is good for 1 sausage, lasagna, a salad, a drink & a cookie. Friends and family are welcome to purchase lunch tickets from the registration desk for $15. The BBQ will be serving from 10:30am 2:00pm. Cheer on other riders as they complete their ride. Chair massages available by donation. West Coast Cycle for Sight 5 th Anniversary baseball caps for sale for $30 Silent Auction The park beside West Langley Hall has tennis courts, a soccer field, a ball hockey court, basketball nets and a small playground. Kids can bring their equipment and enjoy the park while you ride (adult supervision is required).

7 What to carry with you on the ride Two water bottles - Decide if you want sports drinks or plain water or one with more carbs. Nuun tablets will be available for you to add to your water bottles. Snack - Sometimes you just need an extra boost so have something with you to get you to the next rest stop. Watch out for sugars that can give you a rapid boost but cause you to crash later. Rest stops along the route will have snacks and refreshments for all riders. Rest stops will have Nuun tabs, Honey Stinger Gels and other energy foods. ID and Health Card Credit Card and Cash Charged Cell Phone Route map Recommended: All-in-one tool A mini tool that has the bits needed to tighten or loosen things on your bike plus a chain tool. Spare inner tube and tire levers Pump - Carry either a mini pump, CO2 pump or a frame pump Patch kit Sunscreen What to Pack for the Finish Line Cash and Credit Card. Change of clothes (out of bike stuff), including a change of shoes. Note: Cycling shoes are not permitted inside West Langley Hall. (This is where the beer & wine will be served after the ride.) Small first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic spray or towelettes, analgesic cream (e.g., Rub A535), pain relievers (e.g., acetaminophen/tylenol) Plastic bag to hold wet items like your bike shoes, socks, shirt, and shorts. Appropriate clothes based on the weather (baseball hat, rain gear etc)
8 Safety Tips & Riding Etiquette You are responsible for your own safety Obey all traffic laws, red lights and stop signs as well as railway crossing signals Please be aware this event is on a shared roadway course. Event cyclists will have the rightof-way at intersections controlled by a certified traffic control person. At all other times, cyclist must obey rules of the road. Use caution at all times and be prepared for the possibility of pedestrians, non-event vehicles, non-registered cyclists and even animals on the course. Ride single file. Remember, this is NOT A RACE, but a bike ride organized for some visually impaired/blind cyclists and their friends and family. Cyclists will have various levels of visual acuity (not just those cycling on a tandem). Vocalize your actions. It is important to understand the rules of group riding. Communication through hand signals and shouting is key and the responsibility of every rider. Vocalize warnings and directions while performing hand gestures to communicate with other riders. This is especially important for riders with vision loss. Pass on the left and announce "on your left" as you approach. Do not make sudden unexpected movements such as changing your riding line, your speed or stopping in the bike lane. These unexpected actions can cause accidents. Learn how to shoulder check without changing your riding line and know who is around you at all times. Look down the road to see what other riders are doing and spot obstacles in time to react to them. Don't stare at the tire or road immediately in front of you as it can be hypnotic. When riding in a line with other riders, every hand signal should be announced and repeated from the front to the back of the line.
9 When we are riding in areas where there is light traffic, warn riders ahead of you of cars approaching them from the back. If you have an emergency such as a flat, shout "flat" and get out of the riding line before stopping. Take it easy and enjoy the scenic countryside around you! Leaving the ride - If you abandon the ride, please notify one of the ride volunteers en route or call the number on your license plate. About Your Bike Bike condition - Make sure your bike is well-tuned and your derailleur and brakes are in good working order. Cycle for Sight is fortunate to have the support of West Point Cycles, Velofix and Fort Langley Cyclery. If you are looking to have your bike professionally checked before the ride, please consider one of our event supporters. West Point Cycles W 10th Ave, Vancouver (604) West Boulevard (604) NEW! 215 East 2 nd Ave All registered riders receive a complimentary basic tune up at this location. Velofix: Mobile Bike ProShop VELO-FIX Velofix will be on-site before the ride and can do bike checks for riders starting at 7:30am (cyclists are responsible for the cost of any parts required). Please note that Velofix pre-ride bike checks will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Velofix will also be offering mobile bike services during the ride until 1pm. If required, call the emergency number on your license plate and Velofix will be sent to help you. Tire pressure - More tire problems occur when tires are not properly inflated. Check your tire pressure ensuring they are appropriately inflated according to the information on the tire.
