Maritime Radio and BOAT PRO Don t forget to tell your friends and family about our upcoming courses: Maritime Radio is tentatively scheduled for spring BOAT PRO is tentatively scheduled for Nov Cost is $60 per person. Both courses will be held in Room 2001 at NWCC Terrace. You can sign up at Aqua Clear Bottlers (Bev) or by phoning Ron or Mike. Boat Pro is suitable for young people as well. We ve had kids as young as 12 successfully complete the course (are you smarter than an 8 th grader?). What a great age to begin your boating safety education! If you have a friend that is younger than 25 years and operating a boat without a PCOC you may want to suggest taking the boating course as soon as possible. If that person was operating a boat that results in an accident; perhaps the insurance company may put up a strong resistance for any coverage. Also check with your insurance agent to ensure you have all forms of coverage both in the water and on the trailer if applicable. The Squadron will be setting up a table at Canadian Tire Dec 19 & 20 if you would like to help please call Mike or Ron. Note for the upcoming boating season the Terrace Squadron has a new hot mail address cpsboating@hotmail.com. Squadron Burgees, decals and hats are available. Contact Mike for information. Copy of newsletter in colour is available for reading on the Terrace Squadron web site.
2 Kommander s Korner The summer has gone by too fast and I am getting a lot slower in keeping you abreast of happenings. The picnic and training at Furlong Bay didn t materialize as I could not make contact with the required people. We played telephone tag and with the government regulations we couldn t have a hamburger barbeque without a serve it right etc. Maybe next year? My personal fishing wasn t good this year and from what I hear it wasn t very good for people on the Douglas but it has been good on the Skeena. A refresher (upgrade) training was held for the certified courtesy inspections people and we only had three of the original group attend..mike and Kelly are fully qualified and preformed inspections at the Fishermans Park boat launch. They also did a rescue when they decided to go fishing instead of making inspections (they said there were no inspections to do)!! Mikes report is attached. Good work guys. Mike s article on MICE ADVICE was published in the Aug 2008 Pacific Yachting. The cruise to Welcome Harbour was only attended by Morning Mist and Daruma. We have to figure out how to get more participation. Any ideas or suggestions??? We are looking at scheduling a fall Boat Pro course and are starting to get a few inquiries. Make sure all your friends and fellow boaters are aware. The replies to the questioner from the last AGM haven t been acted on at this time. We put some of the money in a term deposit. Have to look at purchase of a mike and amp to go along with presentations so that all can hear the trainers. The NWCC (Northwest Community College )wants us to go in partnership with them on courses. They will advertise, collect dues and pay us to provide the courses. This is an ongoing discussion at the bridge meetings. If you have any thoughts on this or any other suggestions please note that the bridge meetings are open to everyone and the times will be posted on our web site. If you don t have internet you can phone myself or any bridge member to find the next meeting. (We have coffee and some snacks at these meetings and lots of ideas!!!) The photo contest is really lacking in participation. The deadline will be extended to the end of Oct with the results at the general meeting. There will be a couple of great prizes. Make sure you read the rules on the web site and submit your favorite nautical picture. Anything pertaining to the outdoors and water and whatever is appropriate. We would like to come up with some means of getting more involvement in the bridge positions, proctoring and ideas on how to make it more interesting for the members. Proctoring (helping with the classes) strengthens your knowledge and you meet many new people. Marilyn and I are heading of to the prairies this week to see the grandchildren, shoot some gophers, go elk hunting and whatever, will return in a few weeks so if you have any ideas or would like to express ideas or suggestions please e- mail me or talk to another bridge member or wait till we are home and phone me. Hope your summer was good and see you in a couple months. We have had over 400 people so far in our courses and look forward to many more. Best regards, Commander Ron Boating Safety Specialists Transport Canada, and CPS have reached agreement regarding the Boating Safety Specialists (Courtesy Safety Inspections) program. The program authorizes specially trained CPS members to conduct vessel safety checks in B.C. Mike Mitchell held a refresher course. Volume 8 Issue 2 Page 2

All boats checked were jet boats. ESSO to discontinue marine service According to the January issue of Pacific Yachting, all of Imperial ESSO s seven remaining marine fuel facilities up and down the BC coast will soon be shut down and their facilities dismantled. Pacific Yachting issue Aug 2008 it appears that the Esso fuel station in Prince Rupert will be transferred to operator Rick Wampler at the September 30 date Esso plans to have divested itself of all its marine fuel station on the coast. Environmental studies are currently under way to determine if there is an soil contamination, but Wampler is confident that there will be no issues. As with the other facilities, Esso will be removing its tanks, pipes and pumps and Wampler will be replacing them with new equipment. Some of the other facilities are being turned over to their longtime operators. MK Bay Marina stocks up If you ve visited MK Bay Marina recently, you ll realize that they probably have one of the best stocked marine supply stores in this area. Almost everything is available at the marina. There are two new nautical charts for this area Chart 3946 edition Grenville Channel and Chart 3944 edition Princess Royal Channel. 4 TRIP TO WELCOME HARBOUR JULY 19 TO JULY 26 Mike and Joset depart Terrace for Prince Rupert on July 16. They are going to a wedding in Prince Rupert and we are meeting them on the weekend to partake in our week s cruise this year the plan is Welcome Harbor. We are hoping some of the other members meet up with us. We (Carol and Gerald) finally get away on July 19 and head down the channel to Hartley Bay. It s raining and water is choppy but we make the turn around 6:00pm to head up the Grenville. Fuel prices are out of the world and we ve decided the only salvation of this is to travel slower. We ve been averaging 8.5 Nm/h the only thing that s good about going slower is the engine noise is less. This stretch has taken us two hrs longer but saves us about $ On Sunday, we wake to rain and head down Grenville Channel. Around Pitt Point the weather turns snotty and we anchor and watch killer whales. We get going later and reach Hunt s Inlet about 17:00. It s still snotty and we look for a place to tie up. Someone in Hunt s Inlet radios and says 32 ft Ennos join us at the dock. It turns out it s the parents of a girl we know. They remember our boat s previous owners from Williams Lake. That was interesting. Monday morning, we motor in to Prince Rupert for fuel, etc. The water is flat but still raining. In the afternoon, we head back across the channel and arrive at Welcome Harbour on Porcher Island about 13:00. After anchoring in the outer basin, Gerald and I hiked the near beach for a couple of hours, saw rope ladder, etc. Then went on tour in the dinghy and found Campbell s Place two abandoned houses, boats, backhoe, lots of personal stuff, no sign of people. Mike and Joset arrive in time for supper, visited, listened to two maydays on the radio. One kid said float sinking and another guy said help me off the rock. This is way more action than we ever hear in the Douglas. Tuesday awoke to sun and had breakfast on the deck with Mike and Joset. It gets cool when the sun hides behind the clouds. C & G put prawn traps down and we all went touring, back to Campbell s Place. M & J had been there before; very interesting. We hiked over to Oval Bay. Joset s knee was sore she fell coming back from the Queen Charlottes but she kept going. Nothing in the prawn traps. Wednesday the water is flat as paper it s a fishing day. Another Mayday - we hear the Coast Guard and they are sending their First Responder to take an injured crab fisherman off. Caught some fish and cooked a salmon on a cedar board we salvaged. The evening was lovely and it was nice to be on shore. Thursday more sunshine, but rain and wind expected by tonight. We go thru the gut then off to Hunt s Inlet. That s quite a place. We all agree we could hang out here for a month. Lots of interesting residences, a few with their own sawmills. The feeling is just relaxing. Friday - Leave Hunt s Inlet and begin the journey towards home. We want to fish for halibut at the bottom of Kennedy. Very windy tried to anchor but won t hold. Fishing not great head off the Baker Inlet with a major gale blowing north up Grenville. Meet M & J and raft together for evening. They went to Prince Rupert again for supplies and have decided to stay out a day or two longer. Saturday Pulled traps we had set the night before actually got twelve prawns in the three traps. We pull out of Baker at 11:00, with the tide averaging 9.2 Nm per hour. At this rate we could get home today decide to push it and get home today. Mike and Joset turn west at Sainty Point to spend some time in Twartz Inlet. We arrive back at MK Bay by 20:40. A very good trip! Volume 8 Issue 2 Page 4
