1 Waterline FLAFAYETTE SAILING CLUB VOLUME COMMODORE S MESSAGE The sailing season has started with rain almost every day along with gusting winds. The weather will eventually calm down and let us sail without the fear of being knocked down or soaked by rain. With the start of a new sailing season, everyone needs to remove winter covers and mow under their boat. We need to have the harbor looking good for the next event, which is the Past Commodore cocktail party and regatta weekend. The Weekend Events start Friday evening June 10, with a Raft-up in the secret cove. Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12, we ll have Club racing for anyone interested in competing against Club members. We ll also Raft-up again, in the same location. Sunday evening June 12 at 5:45pm we ll have the Past Commodore s cocktail party. Please bring a covered dish of food to share with the group. The Club will provide the beverages. Please bring your own tableware, and lawn chair. I want to thank everyone who helped or attended the sailing school this year. We had 35 people at the evening school and several new people at the water class. I also want to welcome all new members to our Club. Please come to the Past Commodore party, it is for everyone in the Club, not just old Commodores. So remember these dates: Friday evening June 10, raft up in the secret cove (the cove is west of White Oaks on the high bank side) Saturday June 11, racing at noon, evening Raft-up Sunday June 12, racing at noon, Cocktail Party starts at 5:00pm I hope to see everyone sailing or at the Party, Kirk 1

2 Raft-up, Racing, Past-Commodore Cocktail Party: June 10 th 12th Friday, June 10th and/or Saturday, June 11th LSC Cruising vessels will anchor out overnight in the secret cove. We ll grill out for our evening meal and utilize the galley for our breakfast meal. Reservations aren t necessary, just show up. There is plenty of space in the cove. Bring food and beverages for an overnight stay, and don t forget to bring the head. Saturday, June 11th, 1:00pm, LSC Regatta/Saturday Series Races (2). Captains will gather at the picnic tables before race time for the customary Captains Meeting. The Race Committee will present the racecourse and any pertinent info necessary to have fun. Bring your Lunch. Sunday, June 12th, 1:00pm, LSC Regatta/Long Distance Races (2) AND 5:45pm the Past- Commodores Cocktail Party. Any and all LSC members are welcome, regardless of rafting-up or racing. The LSC will provide hard and soft beverages. LSC members are asked to bring a hot or cold hors d oeuvre to share, tableware, and your lawn chair. 2

3 MISSISSINEWA SUMMER SOLSTICE MINI CRUISE by Ray Justice and the cell is ) The cruise is scheduled for June 24 th, 25th, & 26 th With almost 18 hours of daylight at this time of year we should have some great early morning and late afternoon sailing. We can stay in the shade, drink refreshments, eat lunch and take a nap during the middle of the day. With the moon in its last quarter the night sky should be beautiful. There is no housing buildup around the lake so there is very little light pollution when you are sailing or anchored out in one of the many coves at night. I ve made my reservations for tent site # 454. I am in loop B of the back campground and my tent will be directly across the road from where it was last year. I have reservations from June 23 rd through June 29 th in case any of you want to come over early and stay into the next week. Kirk Gilbert has electric site # 374 reserved on the back cul-de-sac and we will use this site as a central gathering place. Another party in our group has site # 371 reserved next to Kirk. On Friday I will have sirloin burgers at my campsite for those people who have worked up an appetite from launching their boats and setting up campsites. On Saturday night we will have a joint supper and campfire at Kirks motor home. I haven t decided on a menu yet but I will probably buy some food from the local restaurants so we don t spend all our time cooking. When people arrive with their boats they can follow the road all the way back to the launch area. There is a large parking lot there where they can park their rigs and walk back up to the campsites. They can also disconnect their trailers and drive back to the campsites if they choose to do so. Just outside the park entrance Jacksons Country store serves biscuits and gravy in the mornings. The camp store within the park sells sandwiches, ice cream, and other goodies for midday snacks. They also have ice, firewood, eggs, bacon and all the normal supplies should anyone need them. Lake Mississinewa is located 7 miles Southeast of Peru, IN and is a 63 mile drive from Lafayette and 54 miles from the Club Harbor. The shortest route from the Club Harbor is to take US 421 South to Delphi. There take SR 25 East through Delphi and turn onto SR 218 East about two miles East of Delphi. Follow SR 218 East for approximately 30 miles to where it intersects with US 31, approximately 1 mile North of Grissom Aeroplex. Turn North on US mile and then turn East on CR 500 South at the large brown Mississinewa Lake sign. There is a huge rocking chair sitting on a hill by this intersection, so you can t miss it. Continue East on CR 500 South approximately 6 miles, and you will be at the entrance to the Mississinewa Miami State Campground. 3

4 LSC Spring Call-Out in review On April 15th LSC members and guest gathered, at the Historic Sportsman Inn Clubhouse for the annual Spring Call-Out. LSC Social Chairman, Tony Lavish, arranged for the LSC to have appetizers, deli platters, pasta, and potato salads, fruit, sweet stuff, and a cash bar. Very nice! LSC Sailors and guest had the opportunity to mingle and learn more about the LSC. Commodore Kirk Gilbert welcomed all, LSC Officers and Board of Governors informed those present of their responsibilities and encouraged participation. Many thanks to James Miller for assembling and presenting the slide show. Without question; LSC activities are being recorded and saved for future remembrance via the camera. 4
