Waterline FLAFAYETTE SAILING CLUB VOLUME From the Desk of the Commodore I find it sad to say the 2009 sailing season is finally over. Our boats are packed away safe from the harsh winter ready to emerge to sail again. There may be a few who are snowbirds and have plans to move south for the winter. I wish them all sunny skies and warm breezes. I suggest that if your boat is stored at the sailing club for the winter that you visit your boat every once and awhile to make sure that your boat cover isn t sagging and building a big block of ice. If your boat is stored at the Club this winter you are required to send in your 2010 dues for next year before December 31. All others join by February 28 please. I know you wouldn t want to miss all of the fun we have planned for you in Please send in your Participating member s rewards program sheet so you may get a big discount on the 2010 dues. Next year I would like to encourage you to get involved in the planned cruising events. My favorite Mini-Cruise is the second one of the year, which is sailing on one of the inland lakes here in Indiana. We have sailed on Monroe Lake in southern Indiana, where camping and sailing are combined. Sitting around the campfire and telling sailing stories of the day is one of my favorite things to do. Many people stay on the bigger boats for the evening which can be much more comfortable then sleeping on the ground. I myself prefer a tent. Next year there is consideration of moving the spring event to Lake Mississinewa, which is only 60 miles from Lafayette. Please make plans to join us, as fun will be had by all. What s much more fun and more involved is the cruising events planned for Lake Michigan. This is real blue water sailing. If you don t have a boat big enough for big water there is always someone looking for crew. The way to get a ride on a big boat just get involved in the sailing club and a ride is sure to pop up. Let me introduce our 2010 Commodore. He is Rex Henthorn. Rex lives in Crawfordsville and has a cottage on Lake Freeman. Rex sails a Rhodes 22 but more often than not you will find him sailing a Capri 14. He is a very fast racer; which amazes me because a Capri is known as a day sailing family boat. Built for comfort not speed. I would like to encourage you to get involved in Lafayette Sailing Club s racing program. We sail almost every weekend. Our Club motto is Nothing but Fun! and that is where our racing program starts. When we race our boat it is not so much about the competition and conquering strategy. It is about spending the day sailing with friends. Believe me. It is great fun sailing along side by side another sailboat, 10 feet apart, talking and poking fun. I can t wait for the 2010 season to arrive. Some day the sun will shine and wind will blow. Steven Titolo 2009 Commodore LSC An Organizational Member LSC - BoatU.S. Cooperating Group

LSC 2010 Spring Mini-Cruise It's time to make a campsite reservation at Mississinewa, if you need one. If you are bringing your cruising boat, you may not actually need a campsite. That's because there will be a few club members with campsites (like me)... and you can be assigned to one of those, if you are sleeping on your boat. Each campsite can have up to six adults. I can even put another small tent on my site, if necessary. Ray Justice is my coordinator for this mini-cruise. Ray will be in campsite no I just reserved the site next to Ray's... which is no These are in the "back campground, non-electric" section. Go to this website: and use the drop down menu choose the property: MISSISSINEWA LAKE. Then, just below that, select the MISSISSINEWA LAKE MIAMI MODERN NON-ELECTRIC as a location choice. That will take you to the area where Ray and I are camping. Use the map to select an available campsite. Cruising in 2010 By James Miller, LSC Cruise Director In 2010, the Lafayette Sailing Club will once again have two cruises, each one-week long. The difference next year will be that these two cruises will occur back to back. LSC members can choose to go on either one of these cruise events, or they can choose to do both, making their cruise two weeks long. The two cruises are Grand Traverse Bay and Little Traverse Bay. Our cruises will take place the last two weeks of July. From July 17 to 24, we will be cruising Grand Traverse Bay. We will launch and retrieve from Elk Rapids, which is on the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay. From Elk Rapids, we will sail over to Northport then down to Sutton s Bay then on to Traverse City for a two day visit then back to Sutton s Bay and then back to Elk Rapids for the farewell dinner and takeout. The second week, July 24 to 31, will begin where the first left off in Elk Rapids. IF you are only doing week two, you can join us there. From there, we will sail to Northport then Charlevoix then Petoskey then Harbor Springs then Bay Harbor and then back to Charlevoix for the farewell dinner and takeout. Sounds hectic but keep this in mind: Petoskey, Harbor Springs, and Bay Harbor all form a triangle and each town is no more than five miles from the other two. This means that our LSC cruisers can choose to stay out on Little Traverse Bay and sail around OR, they can quickly arrive at the next destination and spend their time relaxing and/or exploring that town. Things to be aware of: Charlevoix has a week long event called the Venetian Festival and Elk Rapids has their own week long event called Harbor Days. We are working around those. Elk Rapids won t be a problem but Charlevoix might be. Charlevoix s Venetian Festival will be wrapping up when we go there. The good news is that Charlevoix is on the Michigan DNR reservation system so we will know where we stand six months in advance. Also note: at the end of week two, we will have to shuttle our trailer rigs from Elk Rapids to Charlevoix, for the takeout. It s not a great distance, and will be arranged. Lee Kreul is coordinating these cruises with me. As always, it will be ESSENTIAL that you indicate your intentions to participate and then, listen to Lee when he says, it s time to make your reservation. The Venetian Festival at Charlevoix will draw a large number of boaters to that part of Lake Michigan, and so we will be competing for the available slips. Contact Lee Kreul or James Miller for additional information, or to indicate your interest in participating. We hope you can join us.

Cruising 2009 By James Miller July 2009 brought the Lafayette Sailing Club cruisers to Door County, Wisconsin. We put in at Sister Bay on Saturday, July 18. The next day, we said goodbye to the goats on the roof at Al Johnson s restaurant and sailed to Washington Island, where we stayed at Kap s Marina. On Monday, we sailed west to Cedar River. Tuesday saw us going south to Menominee and by Wednesday we were back at the Door Peninsula, at a place called Fish Creek. Two nights at Fish Creek were followed by a return to Sister Bay, with a quick stop anchoring out off the beach at Peninsula State Park. This was our main cruise event of 2009, and so we had an excellent turnout for this trip. Nancy and I were sailing our Beneteau, Lea Bedea ; Kirk and Judy Gilbert were sailing their South Coast 26, Valentine ; Randy and Carla Carie were sailing their Catalina 25, Randa Sue ; Rex and Sandra Henthorn were sailing their Rhodes 22, Bow vs. Wave ; Lewie and Beverly Wallace were sailing their Catalina 25, Dream n ; David and Suzanne Lemler were sailing their Catalina 25, Kallista ; Don and Rebecca Lang were sailing their Classic Yacht 26, Providence II ; Dan Cserep and his crew, Luann Gregory, were sailing his O Day 25, Prost III ; Dan Honor was sailing his Catalina 22, Cerveza ; Bruce Borror and his crew, Steve Brumit, were sailing Bruce s ComPac 19, Peapod ; David and Donna Keller were sailing their MacGregor 26, Lani ; Glenn and Patti Kats were sailing their Hunter 260, Sea Maiden, and Dan and Pat Harrington were sailing their Catalina 34, Weal Sea. New this year we had cruise shirts that were embroidered, rather than screen-printed. Glenn and Patti Kats cruised with their new boat, Sea Maiden. Lewie Wallace installed roller furling on his Catalina 25. Ohio Kellers, Doug and Debbie, didn t actually cruise with us this year, but they were there all the same buying a new cruising boat. It s an extremely rare LM-24 that we will likely see on next year s cruise. The guys (Dan Cserep, Dan Honor, Kirk Gilbert) and I went fishing and had some success. That gave us an excuse to gather the LSC cruisers for a spur of the moment party to eat salmon. Of course, just about any excuse will do to gather this group. Pizza; ice cream; pitch in dinners around the BBQ grill, pie expeditions any of those will work! Henthorn,Harrington,Lemler,Wallace heading to Washington Island The Raft-Up On August 8, four of the LSC boats met at Petoskey to cruise Little Traverse Bay, for the second major cruise event of Nancy and I were there, with our Beneteau and we added Lee Drifting to Cedar River and Carol Kreul, as crew. Rex Henthorn and his son, Mark, were sailing Rex s Rhodes 22. Don Lang sailed his Classic Yacht 26, with son-in-law Denis Cellighen as crew. David and Suzanne Lemler were sailing their Catalina 25, Kallista. From Petoskey, we sailed the short distance over to Harbor Springs and used the shopper s dock to tie up, while we had lunch. Our next official stop was Bay Harbor a fairly new facility that was created from an old limestone quarry. The floating docks were in water that was 65 feet deep. After Bay Harbor, we put in at the town of Charlevoix and enjoyed their new facilities for two nights. Our final destination was Boyne City, which we arrived at after sailing the length of Lake Charlevoix. Boyne City was then the take out and departure point. Overall, the 2009 cruising season was a success. The weather cooperated; we avoided serious injuries, and our cruisers had the kind of fun they ve come to expect. And with the Dans (Cserep and Honor) aboard I even managed to boat some nice fish!

LSC 2009 Fall Banquet LSC Social Chairman-Kirk Gilbert put together a mighty fine evening for the members on Nov. 6 th. The evening included, cocktails & hors d oeuvres, great company, a slide show of spectacular LSC moments, dinner, wine, LSC awards & the briefest business meeting by Commodore-Steve Titolo, Racing awards & gift presentation by Race Chairman-Bill Muir, Ships Store inventory reduction sale and newly introduced book exchange, introduction of LSC 2010 Commodore-Rex Henthorn, and gift exchange hosted by Art Lenaerts. Congratulations to Dave Fisher-sailing Thumper, our 2009 LSC Champion and all racers for their gallant efforts. The Race Committee made things interesting and Committee Boat crew was always the best and greatly appreciated will go down as a wet year, but we always had plenty of wind. Racer Average Place Fisher Keller Wallace Rossman Cole Titolo Carie Henthorn Muir Lenarts Eisman Riggs Gilbert Goppert Jason Westman Our LSC 2009 Autumn Mini Cruise Our Autumn Mini-Cruise was at Grand Haven, Michigan from September 25th thru, September 27 th this year. Mini-Cruise Advisors: David W. and Suzanne M. Lemler really planned this one out well. First they put together a top-notch brochure, which included direction, contact info, photos of the area, and points of interest. A standard has been set. Grand Haven, MI in the Autumn is a happening place. The summer tourist traffic was gone, but the waterfront was the place to be. Ice cream/hotdog shops are right there, within a 100 of your boat. The downtown shops are just across the street. Grand stand seating on the waterfront for the water/light show something new for us. And the ship traffic in and out of Grand Haven was always interesting to see. Sailing in and out Grand Haven was probably the best. Ten miles to the north was Muskegon, to the west was open water, ten miles to the south was Port Sheldon. A days sail can be exciting and invigorating, then upon returning you can walk to the beverage or ice cream shop with-out much effort.,and Found this at Port Sheldon

LSC 2010 Membership Application Changes by Rex Henthorn-Commodore 2010 WE RE UNIQUE If Indiana would give the general membership of the Lafayette Sailing Club an ISTEP exam, I d bet that our combined experience, education, and talent would set the standards and goals of sailing clubs nationwide. If Sail, US Sailing, or Northern Breezes would just send a representative to hear our conversations while we are cooking brats, sitting at the picnic tables, on a raft-up, listening in at a BOG meeting, or participating in one of those 4:00 p.m. sundowner sessions during our cruises, the magazine reporter would acquire enough information to fill their respective magazines with interesting sailing news for years. Participation in Club activities permits us to experience creative ideas all the time, ranging from Kirk Gilbert s trailer loading plank, Steve Titilo s picnic table umbrellas, Art s Lenaert s lawn mower ramp, Dave Fisher s bellybutton launch rule, Randy Carie s two beer racer, Dave Keller s Laser catapult launch, to Dan Honor s sail-trolling rig,.you get the idea. MAXIMIZE FUN MINIMIZE WORK. Why waste all that talent. We need everyone s involvement and participation not just because it s a credit against dues, but because, if you don t participate, YOU MISS THE FUN. Remember--the more the merrier. PARTICPATE--- I would recommend, appreciate, and invite every member to participate in some fashion upon a committee, on-going project, or Club function. Based upon the diversity of the membership of this Club, if you will help on some Club project or committee, it can make Club functions and activities more fun and less work for a few that historically have taken on the responsibility for the sake of the Club. The BOG will still provide the leadership, but GET INVOLVED AND HAVE FUN HELPING! SO--- You ll find a paragraph devoted to finding out your area of interest on the application form for FILL IT OUT. Your willingness to help those providing the leadership will maximize fun and minimize work in Areas to consider are: Racing Events: committee boat statistics Cruising Events Harbor: equipment maintenance ground maintenance Sailing School: classroom instruction on-water instruction Social Events: Spring Callout BOG Picnic Past Commodore s Picnic Moonlight picnics/sails IceBreaker events FrostBite events Raft-ups LSC 2009 Oktoberfest The weather wasn t the best but the food, fire, and companionship were excellent. Oktoberfest weekend started off with a Moonlight Picnic at the Harbor. Picnic favorites are always nice. The Raftup in the Cove was pleasant. The Cove offers shelter from the wind. The Full-Moon finally broke from the clouds just before we went to bed. Sailing on Saturday morning was the norm for an Autumn day on Lake Freeman. To say the least, It was brisk. Our Oktoberfest met with some foul weather but we persevered. The trick was to find the right place to set a picnic table, and build a fire. The south tree line on the Harbor grounds was the answers. The many leaves hanging onto the trees provided a windbreak from the southerly breeze.
