jtàxüä Çx LAFAYETTE SAILING CLUB SPRING/SUMMER 2006 A Message from the Commodore by Randy Carie Kevin Bachelder: Editor Bill Muir: Publisher The LSC is composed of individuals and families interested in sail boating, sail boarding and sail craft racing. The LSC objectives are: To promote wider interest in sailing, water safety and seamanship; to encourage knowledge and use of rules and courtesies of the nautical road; To promote inter- and intraclub sailing competition; and to provide a forum for social contact among sailing enthusiasts. This is what the LSC is all about. I would like to thank the LSC 2006 BOG for ensuring that the LSC continues on course. The LSC has been very active this Winter and Spring. I encourage Club members to review the LSC Calendar of Events and mark your calendars for the many events that are scheduled. You'll be glad you did LSC sailors had a wonderful time on Lake Carlyle, IL for the Winter Cruise. Sailing was great on this inland lake. We had the Club house, parking lot, and marina all to ourselves. The temperature was around the 50's, everybody had foul weather gear. It was just a good weekend. Pictures will tell a thousand words. The LSC 2006 Winter Cruise pictures will be on the LSC Web-Site. The LSC Ice Breaker series was a little less than perfect. A number of sailors got some sailing time in. I'm envious! The typical mid-west Spring time weather put a damper on my participation. I'll be better prepared for the Ice-Breaker Series next year. Lake Freeman offers some good sailing in the Spring time. Between work, meetings, and family events I'm pleased with myself for the amount of sailing time that I have gotten in. Those seasonal gusts can aid to getting water in the cockpit of a C22. The LSC Sailing School is now complete for this year. Participants were educated on the finer points of sailing and seamanship. I d like to thank Dave Keller, Bill Burchell, Steve Titolo, and Lee Kreul for sharing their knowledge. I'd like to take this time to thank the LSC Vice-Commodore, James Miller, for organizing the Mini-Cruise to Lake Monroe. My family and I had a wonderful time. The sailing and socializing were excellent. I look forward to doing this for years to come. As of this writing I'm preparing for the August 18 th weekend on Lake Freeman. This is big weekend for the LSC. A LSC raft up is scheduled, the LSC Fall Race Series will be Saturday and Sunday and the weekend will conclude with the LSC Board of Governor s Picnic on August 20 th at 5:45 pm. I look forward to seeing the membership at some or all of these events. The Raft-Up offers an opportunity for the LSC Cruisers to sail and socialize on Lake Freeman. I'll suggest that we sail until dark, then rendezvous at the small bay west of White Oaks and raft-up for the night. We'll have breakfast Saturday morning. I'll have the pre-cooked bacon and coffee. We'll casual sail until noon, race until 5pm, casual sail until dark, and raft-up again Saturday night. On Sunday, August 20th, we can sail and race some more. The LSC Social Committee will collect RSVP's for the Board of Governor's Picnic. This event is open to all LSC members. Friends of LSC members are welcome (members are responsible for their friends expenses). The LSC will provide rib-eye Steak, hot dogs, cold beverages (both soft and hard), and the tableware. LSC members are asked to bring a dish to share and lawn chairs. The picnic tables will be moved to the area between the lake and harbor to accommodate the crowd that is expected. The Board of Governor's look forward to seeing everybody. This is a great opportunity to meet LSC members. Please RSVP to Lee Kreul. And, lets not forget about LSC racing. The Race Committee has scheduled races for Sunday, July 16th, Sunday, July 30th, August 5th, 13th,19th, 20th and 26th. Please mark your calendar and give it a try. The LSC I ENCOURAGE CLUB MEMBERS TO REVIEW THE LSC CALENDAR OF EVENTS AND MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE MANY EVENTS THAT ARE SCHEDULED. 2 jtàxüä Çx LSC MEMBERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING THE LAWN BENEATH THEIR BOAT. THE LSC PROVIDES LAWN MOWERS AND GAS POWERED WEED TRIMMERS FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE. Message from the Commodore (Continued) Sailing Committee, and all LSC veteran sailors are eager to offer some assistance. This is a great way to test your sailing skills and learn a few things about your boat. All LSC members can participate. The traditional captains meeting will be at 12:30pm. Report to the Club picnic tables if you are interested in racing. Take your lunch and have fun. On September 8th, the LSC has a Moonlight Sail scheduled. That means a Moonlight Sail picnic will be organized at the picnic tables. All LSC members are welcome, whether you intend to sail or not. Members commonly ready their boat for sailing, then gather around the picnic tables at 7pm to share their favorite picnic items and socialize before setting sail. I hope to see you there A special thanks to Art Lenaerts, LSC Ground & Equipment Chairman, the lawn mowers are fixed and available for use. LSC members are responsible for maintaining the lawn beneath their boat. The LSC provides lawn mowers and gas powered weed trimmers for your convenience. The equipment is locked in the shed. Thanks for helping to keep the LSC looking nice. I hope everybody is having a fun Summer and getting plenty of sailing in. The LSC is about sailing, racing, cruising, socializing, and a little work. The LSC, with easy access to Lake Freeman, offers any sailor the opportunity to have a good time. I would have to say that Daylight Savings Time was a good idea. Sunset is around 9pm. It's easy to get a couple of hours of sailing in before dark. 3 Introduction to Sailing 2006 by Bill Burchell Not exactly what the organizers had envisioned. One returning student, one new student, and a room full of members there to support and share. As a recruitment tool, not a big success. As an intra-club event, a huge success. Thanks to guest speakers, Lee Kreul, Steve Titolo, James Miler and others I have forgotten by now. Session #3, Dave Keller proved to be the source of all knowledge (including little known, free and cost-effective maps etc.) on cruising. Most cruisers missed this gold mine, as they were, well, cruising. During the session Dan and Sandy arrived on their way back and parked their 25 footer by the library. The room emptied and went out to pour over their craft. The beginners were in awe. So were the old salts. An offshore-class boat on a trailer, on a city street looks so much bigger than it does in 8' seas 10 miles offshore on the big lakes! In hindsight we did many things well. It was like an intellectual sailing swap meet. The difference being that one kept the knowledge they came with, and left with more knowledge. No attic or garage needed to store the new acquisitions. From beginner to old salt, everyone came away richer for the experience On the downside, the number of "converts" to sailing was "possibly" two. About six folks expressed interest at the spring callout (thanks to the work or Darrel Keim and other members). We need to follow up by mail and phone to convert those leads to students, and those students to sailors. We need to construct a platform and act on Lee Kreul's youth program and Dan's et al ideas to create a new generation of enthusiasts. Foul weather gear has many meanings and uses WE NEED TO CONSTRUCT A PLATFORM AND ACT ON LEE KREUL'S YOUTH PROGRAM AND DAN'S ET AL IDEAS TO CREATE A NEW GENERATION OF ENTHUSIASTS Bill and Lee demonstrate points of sail Page 3

jtàxüä Çx Harbor Cleanup by Kevin B. "DAVE, MARY KAY AND ALL THOSE THAT MAKE USE OF THIS WONDERFUL FACILITY THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS As the sailing season approached, LSC members were already hard at work at the harbor. The annual harbor cleanup was April 29 th this year. Turnout was fairly good and many of the projects on our spring list were accomplished. Some new cleats were added and others re-anchored. Winter debris were cleaned out of the launch area, leaves were raked and gathered, mowers were all put to the test (after their spring checkup), boats were moved to make better use of space, and the committee boat was made ready for races to come. It was a busy and rewarding day for all. Dave, Mary Kay and all those that make use of this wonderful facility thank you for your efforts. For those that did not or could not attend the spring cleanup, you still have another chance to lend a hand! There is a fall cleanup scheduled for October 21 st at 11:00am.After the work comes the chili tasting so don t miss out!. Good food and drink is always part of any project Fixing deck cleats, Dan is wondering why Glen is telling Robert to hold it right there Page 4 Dave caught Art and Glen telling a good story

Racing News by Bill Burchell The Past-Commodore's-hosted food, fun and beverages picnic is already behind us. As is the kickoff of the points racing season with a Saturday and Sunday Regatta. We encourage dinghy and off-shoreclass owners alike to show up and enjoy the sailing and company. Associate members are welcome to race the Club Sunfish and Zuma, and they are always in demand as crew. Keep in mind last year's fastest skipper on average was a rookie that had never skippered races before--3.7 seconds from unbeaten in Experienced racers should consider serving on the RC boat when needed or crewing for a new racer and showing him/her the ropes. (You get your average for the series for either, so no lost points). Race results are now online at Please follow the link on the home page for the Excel document. (Thank you to Bill Muir and Kirby Reed for relocating the site's server and URLS's) Current results will usually be posted within a few days of the races (if I was present). Expect a week or so delay from my receipt of the results from Mary Kay and Elaine. Throw outs and averages (for crewing or RC-boat service) will not be factored in until the end of a series. If you have a question or notice an error, please contact me ASAP. Despite the heat and forecast 0-5 kt winds, July 16 th, the skippers came ready to race. The air was better than expected with a dome of high pressure overhead, with knock-down puffs of 4.4 kt recorded by the RC. The breezes behaved pretty well and oscillated from the south west, except between the leeward nark and finishing line, where it felt the need to express its northern persona. If you had the native boat speed and skills to stay with the leaders, life was good. If not, while they were heeling we were watching magnetic tape, (which takes all of 1 kt to stream) just hang limp. Dave Fisher was first, first, second, and second, in the Spring Regatta. The alteration flag officer, Commodore Carie and Glen Kats are ruling the cruiser ranks at this point, with new racer Greg Shaner nipping at their heels. Former Club Champ Art, returning member Bob Dwyer, Lee Kreul, Kevin Bachelder, and former Commodore Lewie Wallace have joined the hunt as well. Past Commodore Doug Matthews is a threat yet to be realized, but the rumor mill has him returning *very* soon. Regarding clouds and rain, we race. To paraphrase Commodore Carrie, "What is the purpose of owning expensive high-tech-foul-weather gear if you're not going to use it?". ON A SERIUOS NOTE I will be sending, under separate cover, a review of the ISAF long-series scoring system I/we adapted this year. In theory, it reduces bias in a long series compared to the low point system that that we have been using. It also claims to reduce the bias between races with a small versus a large number of boats participating. The thinking being one should reward the first place (or middle of the pack) racer in races where more boats are on the water. That is, it is harder to win third place WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF OWNING EXPENSIVE HIGH- TECH-FOUL- WEATHER GEAR IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO USE IT? Page 5 LSC racers pass the finishing mark, Cole leading the pack

Racing News by Bill Burchell with 10 boats racing than with 3 boats racing. By my reckoning, just the opposite is happening. More on that under separate cover Dave Fisher, winner of the the Spring Regatta, is still the man to beat. Titolo and Rossmann made cameo appearances to keep Dave honest, but Dave has won his share. On a serious note, the Club and program needs participation. We have seen quite a few racers (many new faces, lot's of "cruisers") but no one on a regular basis (except for Dave). Nobody has close to a lock on the Spring Series or season. A high percentage of the racers are new to racing at the LSC this year, so a beginning racer's chances are as good as the next guy or gal's chances. Meaning that the places at the podium for the Fall Banquet are still up for grabs. The caveat here is that racing is still a "must be present to win" kind of a game. When Elaine or Mary Kay take a welldeserved break, we need volunteers. If you have not done it before, it is a superb overview of the races from a different perspective, as well as a great learning experience for a racer at any level. The last two race days can be painted with the same brush--courtesy. Faster boats build a sizeable lead, and then sit and wait for the pack to catch up. Being within 20' constituted being in the same wind pattern, past that, good luck. Lee Cole observed two flags on one shore pointed in opposite directions Saturday. The oscillating shifts, 90 degrees or more, defied predicting a time cycle. On the upside, there were good puffs and not too many deep holes. Still, many many lead changes among a fleet of quality racers, so exciting and a lot of fun. At least exciting and interesting, ;-) Pretty much the luck of the draw. 150 feet away from the windward mark one poor soul had been severely headed, lost his lead and fell behind the pack, looking forward to 2 tacks to fetch the mark. Moments latter the fleet found themselves on the wrong end of a 90-degree wind shift. The (former) poor soul was lifted the mark, and the remainder of the fleet had another two tacks to fetch it. That's kind of a days they were unless you were the aforementioned Lee Cole in race number #1 last Saturday. No doubt Lee is one of the top LSC racers, but he finished 6 minutes ahead of the 2nd place boat (a fivetime Club Champ), and for Lee the race only lasted 28 minutes! DAVE FISHER, WINNER OF THE THE SPRING REGATTA, IS STILL THE MAN TO BEAT. Club Racers heading for the mark Page 6

Waterline WE CALL IT SEEING THE ARCH, AND IT S SIMPLY A REFERENCE TO MISSING THE TURN OFF AND GOING ALL THE WAY TO ST. LOUIS BY MISTAKE Nancy Miller stirs her great vegetable soup before dishing it out, um umm good Mini-Cruising in 2006 By James Miller It takes about five hours to drive over to Lake Carlyle, in Illinois. That s where we had the first mini cruise of the 2006 season, on March 17, 18 and 19. Of course, it can take a little bit longer when it s the Commodore driving, and the Vice Commodore navigating in the pick up truck. We call it Seeing the Arch, and it s simply a reference to missing the turn off and going all the way to St. Louis by mistake. We don t really go all the way to St. Louis, but this wasn t the first time we ve missed that turn, either. "Winter Cruise" participants included Randy Carie and me (James Miller), on Randy's Catalina 25; Kevin Bachelder, on his O'Day 22; Bruce and Maury Borror (Bruce's dad), on Bruce's ComPac 19; Dan and Sandy Cserep, and Dave Cserep (Dan's dad), on the Cserep's O'Day 25; and Kirk Gilbert and Art Lenaerts, on Kirk's new boat, the "Valentine", a SouthCoast 26. It was cold and windy the whole time, but the wind made for really great sailing. And, at the end of each day, we would go back to the marina and plug in our electric heaters. The marina also had a warm clubhouse with a gas fireplace and full kitchen, which we took advantage of each morning and evening. Best of all, we had the lake, the marina, and all it s facilities all to ourselves. Next year, we ll do it again. The "Winter Cruise" was a success! The year's second minicruise took place on May 19, 20, and 21: it was the Lake Monroe mini cruise, held at Paynetown State Recreation Area, down by Bloomington. Festivities got started on Friday, May 19, when we held an evening cookout on the deck at my brother s house. Tom (my brother) lives right up the hill from Paynetown State Recreation Area. Each LSC member brought something to cook on the BBQ grill (steak, chicken, fish, etc.) and enjoyed Tom s hospitality. Lake Monroe is Indiana s largest manmade lake, and on Saturday everyone was out sailing. Lee Kreul had come down and crewed on my boat, on Friday. Lee had to head home Saturday, but Bill Muir came down and crewed for me as several boats headed down the lake to the Four Winds Marina complex, where we ate lunch. After lunch, we made our way back up the lake to the campground where we were staying (Paynetown). That evening, everyone gathered around the fire pit in one of the campsites to cook a group dinner in a pair of cast iron hanging pots. A big thank you goes out to my wife, Nancy, for providing the food again this year. Sunday provided more sailing, and yet another crew change on my boat. Bill Muir switched to Kevin Bachelder s boat, and my two grown children, Lea and Adam, showed up to crew for me. The weather was very nice throughout the weekend, but by Sunday, people were starting to head back to the real world. Mini cruises can be brutally short. Randy and I stayed put and continued sailing at Lake Monroe right through Monday and into Tuesday. Randy crewed on my boat, and the following day I crewed on his boat. We enjoyed the challenge of sailing the full length of Lake Monroe with its twists and turns all the way down to the dam and back. Hey, we had ten boats this year. That s up from seven last year. We had three Catalina 25 s: Randy Carie s, Chuck Wiltfong s, and mine. Randy rotated crew at various times. His wife, Carla, and Carla s sister, Cammy, were down for part of the trip. Randy s son, Carl, was also there. Chuck Wiltfong was single-handing his boat, and you ve already heard about my crew changes except I should add that my brother, Tom, and my cousin, Scott Miller, also crewed for me on Monday morning. Ken and Page 7

Mini Cruise (continued) Doris Toye joined the group with their Catalina 22, and entertained their grandchildren: Meranda, Sydney, and Reese. Scott Brown had his Catalina 22, and for a crew he brought along his brother, Clark Brown. Dan and Sandy Cserep had their O Day, and for a crew they had their niece. Kevin Bachelder single-handed the other O Day on this trip Old Blue. Kirk Gilbert also returned this year, and single-handed his new boat, Valentine. Kirk s boat is the red-hulled beauty that we first saw in action over at Lake Carlyle, back in March. Glenn Kats and Dan Honor arrived Saturday, but still managed to get in some good sailing. Glenn single-handed his MacGregor, sporting a new red bimini top. Dan came down, camped in a tent, and singlehanded his Hunter 170. The Hunter is a day sailer, but Dan still managed to run with the big boys down to the Four Winds Marina for lunch. In fact, we had trouble keeping up with him. At any given time, half the boats were being single-handed. And, Dan Honor was the only participant to pitch a tent. So, if you are a non-cruising member of the LSC, we missed having you come down and join in. You could have crewed on several different boats during the trip. The Party met all of my expectations. I would like to thank Lee Kreul, Social Committee Chairman for organizing a splendid event. As the cook, entertainment, and activities organizer Lee had his hands full. The Club provided the party beverages We ll try this again next year. Just plan on bringing your tent, your sleeping bag, and your favorite PFD. OK, let s answer some of the questions I know you are dying to find out about. Yes, Randy brought pre-cooked bacon. And, on the morning we did breakfast, I was using Egg Beaters (they re easy). And yes, there were real varmints, in addition to my brother, Tom. The real varmints showed up on Monday night, after everyone else had gone home. Randy and I were left with the job of burning up the remaining firewood (DNR rules say you can t leave it behind, due to emerald ash borer problems). So, Randy and I were there, burning this stuff up late into the night. For a snack, to go along with my one beer, I opened a can of sardines, a package of saltine crackers, and some low fat turkey stick (like summer sausage). It was driving the raccoons crazy. Randy heard them first, in the woods directly behind us. I turned around; shined the flashlight back there, and there they were. You couldn t miss them their eyes light up like bike reflectors. They were everywhere. We stoked the fire and ate the sardines, confident that we had locked up the boats this year. And yes, there were raccoon footprints all over the cockpit of my boat when we finally called it quits for the night. Past Commodores Cocktail Party by Randy Carie and entree. The members provided the extras. Everything was delicious. It was good to see everybody in good spirits on a gloomy weekend. A special thanks to Dave and Mary Kay for opening their home for the Party. Page 8 Rafting up on Monroe Farmer doing some Full-Tilting I WOULD LIKE TO THANK LEE KREUL, SOCIAL COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN FOR ORGANIZING A SPLENDID EVENT

Independence Day, 4th of July by Kevin B Independence day, or the day before it, actually, Turned out as a wonderful sailing day on the lake. A decent breeze, some sunshine and that handy long weekend brought several of the boats out. The kids had a great time swimming and building supersized sand castles on the beach. The women decided that they wanted to sail, sail, sail. They were looking to practice their tacking and sail handling skills. It was a bit of a balancing act for the skipper, but as the sun began to set, there were smiles from all. After a picnic dinner, the boats began to gather outside the harbor for a good view of the fireworks display. As show time drew near, mother nature began her own show. Fireworks began as thunder rolled across the lake. Rain and lightning followed as the now hurried fireworks show concluded. With dampened bodies, yet undampened spirits, fellow sailers gathered at dockside and enjoyed stories and cocktails under cover of the tarp until the weather began to clear. Many thanks to the Club for supporting the fireworks at the harbor each year. We all had a great time See you there for 2007! A Family event: building sandcastles on the beach waiting for the fireworks to start LSC Cruisers Safely Home From Death s Door by Lee Kreul Well it wasn t quite the Death s Door. But it was the Port d Morts (translation: Death s Door Passage) an infamous body of water separating Washington Island and the Door Peninsula. Here winds and currents combine for interesting sailing and many ship disasters. The LSC cruisers traversed this passage on day one of the 2006 cruise, a dark day with light but tricky winds on the nose. This years cruise (last week of July) marked the Club s second trip to Door County, Wisconsin to sail Green Bay. The cruise cov- ered more than 90 miles in five days. This year s cruisers included: Jim and Nancy Miller on Lea Bedea; Lee and Carol Kreul on Avery Marie II; Doug and Debbie Keller on First Class; Kirk and Judy Gilbert on Valentine; Randy, Carla, and Clayton Carie on WELL IT WASN T QUITE THE DEATH S DOOR. BUT IT WAS THE PORT D MORTS Cruisers flying their colorful headsails was inspiring Page 9

LSC Cruisers Safely Home From Death s Door (continued) Randa Sue; Dan and Sandy Cserep on proste III, Dave and Donna Keller on Lani; Chuck Wiltfong and Dan Honor on Transcendence; Kevin and Julia (Linda?) Bachelder on Treat Me Right, and Glenn and Patty Kats on Wind Quest. The cruisers put in and took out at Sister Bay. Other ports visited in Wisconsin included Detroit Harbor on Washington Island, Nicollet Bay and Fish Creek, and Cedar River and Menominee in Michigan. There were two long days of 22 and 25 miles each, and two crossings of Green Bay. The Cruise did not officially begin until Sat. night with a pot-luck dinner shoreside at Sister Bay Marina, but boats started arriving on Thursday. Kirk Gilbert won the prize for fastest set-up and launch (without assistance). Some people say he did it in about 45 min. The pot-luck dinner was the first time that all cruisers were able to don their new tie-dyed (WOW!) 2006 cruising t-shirts. A new tradition was also started with the cruise directors Glenn Kats and Doug Keller accepting Hells Angels of Sailing dew rags. They were required to wear their symbols of authority entering and leaving port each day. This year there was a change in the LSC cruising by-laws. The Cruise Directors ordered a daily Captains meeting and required all boats to depart at the same time each day, usually 9:30AM, instead of a boat by boat when we get around to it approach as was followed in past years. (No one knows, and we can only speculate, what punishment awaited a boat that was not under way by the appointed time.) After the mandatory 9:30 start on the first day out, the Cruise Directors tried lining up all the boats for a classic picture of all the boats sailing together. Did it work? Answer: No. According to Vice Commodore Jim Miller, We were lucky to have one picture with three Miller s Lea Bedea, Donna and Dave Keller's Lani, and Kreul s boat, the Avery Marie, rafted up at Detroit Harbor boats in it. It was like herding cats. The first day of sailing was Sunday. It started with a reach to clear Sister Bay Shoals, then a difficult upwind sail to Washington Island. The ten boats anchored at Detroit Harbor for the night with intentions of island exploration. However, gray skies, rain and strong winds dispelled any possibility of shore visits. Instead, the cruisers rafted up in two s and three s for dinner. A rising wind about dessert time forced them to break off and anchor separately for the night. Winds of knots from the south throughout the night kept nearly everyone awake checking their anchors and the position of other boats. At dawn the cruisers were greeted with a sudden 180 wind direction change to the north. The wind change put Dan and Sandy Cserep s boat and Gilbert s Valentine aground. No problem for these intrepid cruisers. The captains merely donned their Page 10 THE CRUISE DIRECTORS ORDERED A DAILY CAPTAINS MEETING AND REQUIRED ALL BOATS TO DEPART AT THE SAME TIME EACH DAY Boats line up and head out for daily muster

LSC Cruisers Safely Home From Death s Door (continued) swim suits, jumped in, and gave their boats a good shove to get the boat afloat in deeper water. Let us say that Washington Island was not the high point of the cruise. After a cold breakfast aboard the group left en mass for Cedar River, Michigan. The cruisers headed northwest on a close reach, across Green Bay for 25 miles. The trick was to avoid the very large Whaleback Reef about 15 miles out. Remarkably most boats made the 25 miles on one tack. It was one of the fastest runs of the whole trip. Most boats averaged better than 5 knots. Late that afternoon a thunder storm with sixty mile per hour winds and hail hit the area (fortunately when everyone was safely in Cedar River Marina). Afternoon entertainment was provided by Avery Marie s headsail coming loose in the middle of the storm. (Lee blames Carol for not securing the sheets, Carol blames Lee for not securing the furler line). The only restaurant open in Cedar River was offering $1 burgers and pizza. All agreed the nearly empty Cedar River marina and staff was great. However, the town of Cedar River itself has little to offer. Third day (Tuesday ) was mostly a long upwind run to the south, with a good change of direction near the end that allowed for a good southwesterly reach into Menominee. Our marina fee here allowed us to use one of the finest sailor s lounges ever seen by any of the crews at any marina. A bevy of fine restaurants had everyone eating out. A second huge thunderstorm brought a quick end to dinner and sent everyone but the Kreul s heading for shelter ashore (they were still trying to settle blame for the furler thing). Day four (Wednesday) yielded a nice downwind run of 15 miles to Fish Creek s Alibi Marina. That day it started to get very hot. The cruisers spent two nights here with one group of the guys heading for the golf course, another fishing, another biking at Peninsula State Park, and most of the women off shopping. Fish Creek s restaurants, shopping, and art galaries were expected to be, and were the highlight of the trip. A shore side Pizza party capped Thursday evening. However, late that night, while most of the cruisers slept peacefully, the heat (their stories) finally got to Patty Kats who switched to on-deck sleeping in the middle of the night, and to Nancy Miller who paced the dock searching for a breeze. Day five (Friday) was again a short downwind run to Sister Bay with a twohour lunch and swim stop at Nicollet Bay. The cruisers were expecting a secluded, quiet anchorage. However no one told about 60 other boats whose skippers also had the same expectations. It turned out to be a nice test of anchoring in a crowd. The cruisers arrived that afternoon at Sister Bay in continuing hot weather. That night everyone gathered on the deck of a local bar for our annual cruise ending awards banquet. The Hell s Angels of Sailing dew rags were passed to next years Cruise Directors Kirk Gilbert and Randy Carie. The cruisers also discussed and voted on several sites for next year s cruise. (Somewhere in Michigan at this point).
