1 Yobe State Cholera Outbreak Situation Report No. 1: 1st October 18 Yobe State Ministry of Health Highlights: 36 new cases were reported on 1st October 18 from LGAs (Gujba, Gulani, Damaturu and Fune) death was reported. 6 new samples were collected and tested using RDT kits in Damaturu LGA, and all 6 samples tested positive for cholera. Epidemiological Summary: The total number of suspected cholera cases reported in Yobe state is 1,319 with 61 associated deaths (CFR.8%). In the state, up to cases have been reported in Gulani LGA (affecting wards), 367 cases in Gujba LGA (affected 8 wards) and 317 cases in Damaturu LGA (affecting 11 wards). In Fune LGA, 18 cases were reported (from 9 wards) and 67 cases were reported in Potiskum LGA (from wards). Out of samples collected and tested using cholera RDTs, 7 (78%) were positive and 13 (%) were negative. Again, 9 (7%) out of 19 samples cultured were positive for Vibrio Cholerae. However, the 9 positive samples were taken to national reference laboratory for quality checks and further analysis samples and Vibrio Cholerae O1 (Inaba) serotype was isolated in out of the 9 samples. Eleven (11) of the new cases were reported from Gujba, same as the number of cases reported on the previous day (Fig. 6). Nine (9) cases were reported from Gulani (Fig. ) and Damaturu (Fig. ) each, seven (7) cases were reported from Fune LGA (Fig. 8) and no case was reported from Potiskum LGA (Fig. 1). 1

Response Activities Surveillance: WHO supported EHAs conducted house-house active case search and sensitization in at-risk households in various LGAs. EHAs identified 17 suspected cases during house-to-house search in the LGAs and referred them all to CTUs/ORPs in the respective LGAs Priority areas have been identified and communicated to WASH and risk communication teams to scale-up interventions.
5 Case Management: Admissions New admissions New Discharges On admission Gulani Gujba Damaturu Fune Potiskum Total UNICEF conducted training for 7 health workers deployed to support ORPs in Ngurubuwa and Bularafa health post in Gujba and Gulani LGAs respectively UNICEF supplied drugs, ORS and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) materials to support ORPs and the remote health facilities Case management in MSF-supported CTU in Buni-Yadi, Gujba LGA is ongoing. No suspected cholera case was reported in Potiskum LGA since th tember 18 No mortality was reported in all affected LGAs Risk Communication: Trained Imams are sensitizing community members on hygiene promotion and cholera risk mitigation practices during daily prayer sermons UNICEF-supported VCMs sensitized 389 persons on health and hygiene promotion in Bara, Tettaba and Bularafa communities of Gulani LGA WHO-supported motorized cholera awareness and prevention prevention campaign continued in Dogon-Zare, Yerimaram and Damboa areas of Potiskum LGA Airing of radio jingles on health seeking behavior and cholera prevention by YBC was conducted along with Nigeria independence day messages. WASH: RUWASA has commenced water supply from the newly drilled hand pump boreholes in Mutai and Bungai communities of Gujba LGA to ensure community members have safe water IRC-supported volunteers sensitized additional 186 people on cholera risk prevention and hygiene practices in Tsallake and Tukuban Akawu areas of Damaturu LGAs WASH and IRC teams distributed 611 Aqutabs in affected households in Tsallake and Tukuban Akuwa areas of Damaturu LGA. Coordination: State Ministry of Water Resources (SMOWR), UNICEF and other WASH partners are working to procure additional materials and mobilize local partners and volunteers to scale-up interventions in Gujba, Fune and Gulani LGAs where accessibility due to insecurity, difficult terrains, and poor communication networks are affecting response efforts.
