1 Yobe State Cholera Outbreak Situation Report No. 9: 8th tember 18 Yobe State Ministry of Health Highlights: 18 new cases were reported on tember 8, 18 from LGAs (Gujba, Gulani, Damaturu, Fune and Potiskum) death was reported. Epidemiological Summary: The total reported in Yobe state is 1 with 61 associated deaths (CFR.%). In the state, up to 399 cases have been reported in Gulani LGA (affecting wards), 3 cases in Gujba LGA (affected 8 wards) and cases in Damaturu LGA (affecting 11 wards). In Fune LGA, 119 cases were reported (from 9 wards) and 67 cases were reported in Potiskum LGA (from wards). Out of 6 samples collected and tested using cholera RDTs, (79%) were positive and 9 (17%) were negative. Again, 9 (7%) out of 19 samples cultured were positive for Vibrio Cholerae. However, the 9 positive samples were taken to national reference laboratory for quality checks and further analysis samples and Vibrio Cholerae O1 (Inaba) serotype was isolated in out of the 9 samples. Fourteen (1) of the new cases were reported from Gulani, representing % increase in number of cases reported in the previous day from Gulani LGA (Fig. ). One (1) case was reported in Gujba (Fig. 6), two () cases were reported from Damaturu (Fig. ), one (1) case was reported from Fune (Fig. ) and no case was reported from Potiskum LGA (Fig. 1). 1

Response Activities Surveillance: WHO supported EHAs conducted house-house active case search and sensitization in at-risk households in various LGAs. They identified 1 suspected cases during house-to-house search in the LGAs and referred them all to CTUs/ORPs in the respective LGAs Active case search by other SPHCMB Epidemiology unit staff and partners in all affected communities and LGAs is also ongoing Priority areas have been identified and communicated to WASH and risk communication teams to scale-up interventions. In Gujba, the areas are Buni Yadi, Goniri and Gotala and in Gulani LGA, they are Tetteba, and Gagure settlements. In Fune, Kollera and Kayeri have been identified as priority areas of interventions, and Damaturu LGA, the areas for interventions are Bindigari Fawari, One million road, and Nayinawa.

5 Case Management: Gulani Gujba Damaturu Fune Potiskum Total Admissions New admissions New Discharges On admission UNICEF conducted refresher training for health workers, including newly deployed staff, on cholera surveillance, case management, infection prevention and control (IPC) in CHC Bara CTU SPHCMB and WHO technical staff conducted supportive supervision in CHC Bara CTU and PHC Tettaba ORP in Gulani LGA to mentor health workers on case management and IPC Case management in new MSF-supported CTU in Buni-Yadi, Gujba LGA has commenced. MSF-Spain has deployed necessary human resources, drugs, supplies and IPC commodities to the new facility The number of new cases being admitted in CTUs across affected LGAs continues to decline. No mortality was reported from all LGAs in more than one week now. Risk Communication: UNICEF-supported VCMs sensitized 189 persons on hygiene promotion in Buni-Yadi, Katarko and Sola in Gujba LGA WHO- and UNICEF-supported radio jingles and recorded cholera risk mitigation messages are being broadcasted by Yobe Broadcasting Corporation (YBC) MSF-Spain IEC team continues group discussion sessions, house-to-house visits and sensitization of household members on cholera prevention and promotion of personal and environmental hygiene in Nayinawa ward Fourteen (1) trained mosques Imams in Potiskum have continued awareness creation and cholera risk prevention messaging during Mosques sermons. WASH: WASH teams distributed 178 Aquatabs to 71 households in Buni-Yadi, Bungai and Sola settlements of Gujba LGA IRC-supported volunteers sensitized 118 community members on cholera risk prevention and hygiene practices in Mutai and Karako settlements on Gujba LGA ACF-International continues sensitization of affected and at-risk household members on hygiene promotion and cholera prevention during nutrition and food distribution programme in Buni-Yadi and Bungai, Gujba LGA The State Ministries of Water Resources and Environment have commenced procurement of NFIs, equipment, materials for water disinfection and sanitation to scale-up WASH interventions in affected LGAs. Coordination: Regular state and LGA RRT meetings are ongoing to sustain integrated and well-coordinated response in affected LGAs.
