Download this Handbook prior to leaving for the race make sure you have the latest version as it could be updated during the year. 13 General Assistants and Teammates cannot follow their competitors or offer assistance on any stage of the event. This includes both One Day and Two Day competitors. Assistants and Teammates are not allowed to enter any part of the running or kayaking stages except at transitions. Competitors assistants or Teammates must be on hand at the end of Stage 1b, 2, 3 and 4 to take charge of the competitor s equipment. With large numbers of competitors competing in the event and limited areas to effect the transitions it is critical that assistants remove the equipment immediately from the transition areas. One competitor bib will be provided per Team and must be swapped along with the timing transponder when team members chance for various stages. Bibs must not be altered in any way and must be worn throughout the event and in the finish chutes. The bib must be your outermost garment at all times (so over the top of any thermals, jackets, etc) it can be worn under your running bag but it must be worn over the top over your kayaking PFD. Failure to clearly show your number when asked will lead to you being stopped until officials can accurately determine your bib number. Calling out your number is not sufficient as a number of competitors call out the wrong number each year. If bibs are seen to be covered during the running or kayak stage, competitors will be stopped and made to correct the problem. You must attach the supplied number to the rear of your running pack so officials can see your number from behind. Competitors are not allowed any help from assistants, friends or family on any stages except in transitions. If competitors have assistants, friends or family monitoring their own or another competitor s behaviour they will be deemed to be assisting their competitor and their competitor will be disqualified. Any competitor or assistant who wishes to make a complaint about another competitor must do so in writing to a race official within an hour of the complainant finishing. The Race Director s decision regarding the complaint is final. No responsibility is taken by the Race Director or sponsors for any loss or damaged property of competitors, assistants, or friends during the Kathmandu Coast to Coast. Competitors and support crews must have their own personal property insurance. Assistants must provide names and cell phone numbers (NZ number) in case they or their competitor needs to be contacted during the Kathmandu Coast to Coast in case of emergency. Officials are an important part of the Kathmandu Coast to Coast safety system. Instructions by officials to competitors and assistants must be followed. Failure to do so will result in heavy time penalties or disqualification. Assistants are advised to study the transition area diagrams and prepare their competitor s equipment, clothing, food and drink well in advance of their arrival. Lost property will be available at Klondyke Corner on Friday, New Brighton finish line on Saturday and the prize giving at Addington on Sunday. Make sure all items are named and numbered. Lost property will be kept for one month and then either disposed of or given to charity. Assistants ensure your competitor does not over-train. Keep a balance between family, social, training and work relationships. Assistants try to remain cheerful. Remember that competitors will become possessed of the devil 13 P a g e

14 during the event, totally irrational, and if things get really bad may even blame assistants for their mistakes. Humour them at the time then make their lives pure hell while they re recovering. Medical Services SportsMed and ProMed are available at every transition of the Kathmandu Coast to Coast for general medical support and emergency response. Providing specialist paramedic staff and equipment, they have been able to integrate with and complement our river and mountain safety teams. There are also medical crews on cycle stages. Assistants Assistants are an integral part of your team and should be briefed by the competitor for their role. Teams may only have two assistants there is no limit on supporters but they will not have access to transitions and they may not help with your transitions in any way (except for removal of gear at certain points and having the kayak scrutinized - see stage descriptions for details). It is possible to have team mates as the only assistants. Assistants should be able to lift, carry and securely tie down kayaks, if you only have 1 assistant do not rely on officials to help with moving the kayak around. You will only get two assistant wristbands so chose carefully who gets these, as they will be the only ones besides the competitors who can access the transitions to collect bikes and provide you support it is not permitted to swap these between crew during the day. This number includes for kayak entries and exits. Children will be allowed to access Transitions with supporters to cheer on their parents or vice versa no wristband required but please keep them close to you at all times. Transitions sometimes take place in paddocks and in the dark, so assistants should wear sturdy footwear and bring a torch or headlamp. You may need to walk up to a km from your car. Any assistants getting out of their cars at Kumara bike stands should wear reflective ankle bands and bright reflective clothing. Thin beads of reflective material are not sufficient. At the kayak put in at Mt White and take out at Gorge Bridge it is highly likely your competitor will expect you to get in the water to hold your boat steady a spare pair of shoes that can get wet and some shorts will come in handy! Supporters who are not critical to the transition at Mt White (start of Kayak stage) are encouraged to continue on their journey to Gorge Bridge (kayak exit point) as parking space is limited at Mt White. Make sure you know where to go if you are not familiar with the course and area please make sure that you have a good map of Canterbury and Christchurch and program the transitions into your GPS or check out the locations prior to the race remember to obey all officials instructions in terms of parking etc at the different areas. Familiarize yourself with pickup areas such as Gorge Bridge (kayak exit) and directions through Christchurch to the finish line at New Brighton. Toilets Portable toilets for competitors, support crew and officials are located along the course at various venues. We try and position them to meet demand, but at times we ll never have enough and you may have to queue. The toilets are serviced to ensure they remain clean, fragrant and stocked, so at times will be unavailable. If you find that toilets need servicing or are short of supplies, please let the service staff know. Toilets do not have lighting; so if you re using them at night, take a torch. While we endeavour to keep them stocked with toilet paper it is highly recommended you bring a back up supply! 14 P a g e

15 Toilets are located at: Kumara Race Course - there are permanent Kumara Racing Club toilets adjacent to the kitchen. There are also some container toilets on-site, but these are generally not available for the Kathmandu Coast to Coast. Kumara Town - there are permanent toilets located at the rugby field. Kumara Junction Bike Transition (Total Span Yard) There are toilets at this transition. Kumara Junction Bike Transition to Kumara Beach toilets are positioned at various locations on the way to the beach, all near the road on the northern side. Some toilets are located on the beach side of the checkpoint. Aickens transition - there are toilets at the transition. You pass them on your left as you drive to the car park. There are also toilets at the car park. Please do not go to the toilet in the trees Aickens transition competitors only there is a reserved toilet for competitors only located between the cycle finish and the timing tent. Klondyke corner - there are toilets located across the shingle road on the grass (south of the finish chute) as well as a permanent Department of Conservation toilet in the scrub. Klondyke corner catering and medical only these two toilets are reserved please do not use them. Klondyke Corner camping - there are toilets placed around the camping area, plus toilets on a trailer. The towable toilets will remain on site until the last Two Day competitor has departed for Mt White on Saturday. Mt White turn off - there is a toilet placed near the highway. Support crews must not stop to use it as you drive down to Mt White Bridge. Mt White Bridge - there are toilets located just over the bridge on the left hand side. Mt White Bridge catering - there are toilets located between the parking area and the bridge, near the Springfield School catering. Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge - there are toilets located in the riverbed and assistants car park. There are permanent Selwyn District Council toilets on the left hand side of the shingle road down to the river. Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge cycle stands competitors only - there is a reserved toilet for competitors adjacent to the cycle stands. Finish there are toilets under the south ramp of the pier, and toilets located at various points around the finish area. Temporary Traffic Management An extensive, approved traffic management plan is in operation and is updated annually. A variety of signs are used along the course. Some that you need to know that relate to assistants parking areas are: Site access 150m - entrance to a car park on your right, approximately 150m ahead, followed by... Site access - entrance to a car park on your right, approximately 75m ahead No stopping or waiting even for just a minute! Do not park between the signs or on the road shoulder or grass verge behind the signs. 15 P a g e

16 Registration, Kumara Racecourse Run number to be attached to the back of your backpack during the Mountain Run stage Competitor wrist bands. This must be worn at all times during the event Kathmandu event t-shirts Assistant vehicle stickers Assistant wrist bands (2). These must be worn to access transition areas to collect gear. This is for the security of competitor s gear no wristband = no gear collection. Assistants will only be able to collect gear corresponding to your wristband number Meal tickets you ordered Timing transponder If you ordered a GPS tracker you will collect at registration Bike & Gear checks Welcome to Kumara, West Coast, South Island, New Zealand. Thursday 3-7pm Registration and Sponsor Expo open at Kumara Racecourse. 5pm Race Briefing During registration competitors will be provided with the following; Kathmandu race bag (doubles as your gear bag for the start line) Race bib Race numbers for bikes & kayaks. These must be applied before starting the race. Competitors must remove all old stickers and event numbers from their kayaks. You can complete your compulsory bike check at selected Avanti bike retailers around the country and run gear checks at Kathmandu stores. These checks open 3 weeks from race dates. You can also do these checks at registration but avoid the queues and get it done prior to the race if possible. Refer to the compulsory check lists for what is being checked. Make sure to bring any gear not pre checked to registration with you. NOTE all kayak equipment is scrutinized on the Saturday morning Cycle crews will be in attendance for repairs at registration on Thursday. Repairs are at the cost of the competitor, please note they will be busy with bike checks. The Kumara Community are offering a meal on Thursday from 4.30pm, tickets are $25 per person and can be pre-purchased on the event website. Please support the community and their efforts. Limited on the day meal tickets will be available, make sure you 16 P a g e

17 bring cash. The meal will be served from 4.30pm until 7pm or when the meals run out. We highly recommend you pre-purchase a meal ticket. Assistants and competitors can set up camp at the Kumara Racecourse. Campervans may stay overnight at the Kumara racecourse. There are no powered sites. It is not compulsory to stay at Kumara Racecourse. There is a fee of $10 per person, which is collected by the racecourse staff for overnight stays. There is a free short term parking area. This is a fundraising activity for the Kumara Racing club. The briefing will be split into two parts the first will cover all of the safety related information and key times, it is compulsory to attend this portion of the race briefing. The second part is optional and will run through the race from start to finish and be an opportunity for participants & crew to get more information about what to expect during the course of the race and to ask 17 P a g e any questions. The safety briefing will be held at the Kumara racecourse at the main marquee. There is not enough room for everyone in the Marquee. The PA system will broadcast outside to the assistants if the weather is clear we will hold this outside. Medical SportsMed will tape/strap ankles at the Kumara registration from mid afternoon on Thursday. No bookings are taken. The price is $15 for one ankle or $20 for two ankles. The SportsMed Massage Team will work at Klondyke Corner on Friday and New Brighton Beach on Saturday. Massages are $35 for 20 minutes (no double bookings). Pre bookings can be made by phoning SportsMed on or 0800 INJURY from 18th December. Fuel & Supplies The Kumara Service station is closed, and has been replaced by a self-service credit card or eftpos fuel facility. You can also fuel up at Arthurs Pass (no LPG), Hokitika or Greymouth. The Kumara Store will be open until 8pm on Thursday night and re-open at 7am on Friday. Kumara Racecourse Facilities Campsite - no bookings required ($10 pp cash) Showers Water Toilets Camp kitchen Friendly neighbours Friday Morning Pre Race - Kumara Junction 5:45am Teammate 2 Arrive at the cycle transition at Kumara Junction and place cycle in numerical order in the cycle stands in the Total Span yard area. The area is well lit make sure you remember which row you need to run down to get

18 to your bike. All racks are numbered - flagpoles are NOT allowed on the cycle stands and you must place your bike in the position marked for your number. Competitors can be driven by car to the cycle stands from Kumara but you must continue past the transition and turn around at the roundabout and along the side of road opposite transition. NO PARKING on the transition side of the road. If you are staying in Greymouth or Hokitika, it is okay to stop near the transition to unload the cycle and competitor there is good parking near the roundabout, check it out on the Thursday. Assistants arriving from Hokitika and Greymouth may enter the roundabout only when there is room for them on State Highway 73. Assistants are not allowed in the cycle transition competitors only. Remember if you are walking to the transition with your competitor you must also have reflective clothing and a light. Assistants should wear bright reflective clothing if working around vehicles and unloading cycles in the dark. All competitors must have front and rear lights on their cycles. Competitors must wear the timing transponder, reflective ankle bands (competitors must supply their own) and cycling helmet for the 2.2km walk to the beach and the run to the cycles. Competitors should bring their gear bag supplied in their race pack with them to put their warm up clothes in prior to the start. This gear will be taken to Klondyke Corner and will be available for athletes to collect in the recovery area at the end of the Mountain Run Stage. Minimise the amount of extra gear you take to the beach. Make sure it all fits in your supplied gear bag. No extra bags please, we have limited space. Please wear reflective gear and lights for the walk down it is still dark while you ll be walking to the beach. Competitors should use a pair of running shoes for the run from the beach to the start of the cycling. Leave them at the cycle racks - they will be collected and can 18 P a g e be reclaimed at the finish in New Brighton. Make sure they are numbered. All assistants Once you have dropped your competitor off drive to the end of the first cycling stage at Aickens and park in the designated car park at, not on the roadside. Please do not park in the Taramakau Valley Department of Conservation car park. Do not delay - leave early! No stopping on the side of the track to the car park. Assistants cannot follow their competitor or offer assistance on any cycle stage. NOTE: There is a road closure on the Friday from the Kumara roundabout through to Jacksons, officially this starts at 6am but you will be able to drop your competitor off an continue through this route as long as you leave the Transition Area prior to 6:30am. The transitions closes for bike racking at 6:30am. 19 STAGE 1a - Run 2.2km Kumara Beach (start line) to cycle stands Teammate 2 - the same competitor that does this stage also completes the next cycle stage (1b) Kumara Beach there is no start order on the beach. There will be two flags set back as far as practical on the beach or road (depending on access to beach) and you will have to start between these. Please be sensible and seed yourselves, if you anticipate taking 3 hours on the ride don t start at the front, you will get run over! You will run up the gravel road and turn left onto the main road, there is a slight rise before you reach Kumara Junction. Here head straight through towards the cycle transition. You will turn right into the transition area and run all the way around the outside of the bike racking area and enter on the far right hand corner. From here you can go directly to you bike. DO NOT ride in the transition, run with your bike to the exit point and mount your bike where the sign indicates you can do so. K 19 P a g e

20 STAGE 1b - Cycle 55km Cycle stands to Aickens Corner No assistants on the cycle course No ipods or similar audio devices to be used by competitors on the course Keep to the left, do not cross the centre line and obey the road code Stop for trains, and obey instructions from officials The cycle stage is 55km following the Taramakau River east towards the main divide. The route is flat or undulating and has a net elevation gain of 250m. There is one railway crossing and several one-lane bridges please indicate to cyclists behind if in a bunch of approaching bridges or hazards. There are several very fast downhills. Large bunches sometimes form on this ride, please be very careful in bunches this is probably the most dangerous part of the race. There is a road closure from Kumara Junction until just before Jacksons (10km to go). Do not count on it working. You MUST obey all road rules and keep to the 20 P a g e left, DO NOT cross the centre line under any circumstances if we see you do this we will disqualify you. There will also be media and race staff vehicles on the road and it is highly likely you will also encounter local traffic. KEEP TO THE LEFT! The transition is about 2km after the railway crossing and is on the left hand side. You will see a gravel run off heading into a paddock and the bike transition. You must follow the signage and instructions from officials. Dismount where indicated, then run with your bike through as far as possible and rack your bike. Exit the racking area to the far left of the transition and run down the chute to your Teammate and crew. All Team crews will be set up on your right hand side as you run down the chute. Keep an eye out for them and make sure you swap your bib and transponder to your Runner before they depart onto the Mountain Run stage. The timing point is after the transition under the inflatable arch as you head onto the course.

21 Aickens Transition Assistants On arrival at Aickens, turn left and take the vehicle track to the car park. Park in the Aickens car park, not on the roadside. No stopping on the side of the track to the car park. Prepare your competitors compulsory mountain stage equipment well before the event. Please do not bring any flags on sticks or sharp objects to the transition area to attract your competitor s attention. Assistants or Teammates are not allowed to offer assistance or enter any part of the running stage except at transitions. Competitors will finish cycling, (the last 100m is gravel), dismount before the farm gate run under the transition banner and rack bikes before running through to the transition change over area, keep an eye out for them and make sure to swap bib and transponder before your runner departs onto the Mountain Run stage. The timing point is after the 21 P a g e transition under the inflatable arch as your head onto course. Assistants are asked to keep chilly bins and deck chairs away from the main transition chute area but can set these up behind the main change over area. Assistants cannot enter the running chute competitors must go to their crew. Team transition area is on the competitors right hand side as they run through the chutes (Individuals only on left). Once your cycle competitor has transitioned to the Mountain Run competitor and they have left on the run Assistants or the Cycle competitor can collect their cycle via the transition entry point once officials advise the transition is open to do so it will be possible to collect bikes in-between waves of competitors coming through. NOTE: You will need your assistant or competitor wristband to collect the bike. You will only be able to collect your competitor s bike that corresponds to the number on your wristband. Officials can make spot checks of competitors compulsory mountain safety equipment at anytime. Do not discard any equipment, they could be spot checked at any time. There is a compulsory check of gear at Goat Pass for EVERYONE. Penalties or disqualifications will be given to all competitors not carrying correct equipment - make sure your competitor is organised and has everything. Assistants cannot leave the Aickens car park until after 9am. Don t panic, there is plenty of time! Assistants must not stop at the Otira footbridge and must not use the Otira Footbridge (by DoC request). Lake Brunner School will have breakfast for sale at the Aickens transition whitebait patties, bacon, eggs, Blackball sausages, omelettes, hash browns, coffee, tea and milo. These meals are not included in the entry fee, bring cash.

22 STAGE 2 Mountain Run 30.5km Aickens to Klondyke Corner Teammate 1 Stage cut-off times: 2pm Big Boulders 4pm Goat Pass 7:30pm Klondyke Corner REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING: Sufficient food for the run Drink many competitors chose to drink directly out of the rivers, the water is generally very good and safe to drink but we cannot guarantee this, once you are approaching the stock-bank towards the end of the run you will cross the Bealey river there is Giardia present in this river so do not drink water directly from the river Sun protection No ipods or similar audio devices to be used by competitors on the course (phones Ok to use for photos there is no cell coverage on majority of run course) No walking poles There is some race specific mountain run course marking during the event but competitors are still responsible for their own navigation over the course, and should familiarise themselves with the terrain. Competitors who have not been across the course should consider carrying a map & compass or GPS to use as a reference during the Kathmandu Coast to Coast. Get a topographical map of the mountain run stage Topo50 Map BV20-Otira and info@coasttocoast.co.nz for a downloadable GPS file of the route. The course marking is a mix of DoC marking and race specific marking it is a fast efficient route but is not compulsory to follow, you may self navigate if wanted you are solely responsible for your course through the Mountain run section. WARNING: The run course is very rough and there are many places where the majority of people simply can not run. If you haven t been over the course be prepared by doing a lot of training on the roughest ground you can find. See the race YouTube channel for 22 P a g e

23 some footage from the running section. Expect A LOT of running on rocks with no track. Competitors head out of the Aickens transition chute and through the timing point. They then follow a farm track for approximately 2.5km until they reach the Deception footbridge. Competitors continue straight ahead for about 15m before turning left down the bank and into the river. From here they cross to the far side and start up the Deception Valley. Competitors don t have to follow a set route but generally follow a mix of rough tracks and the main riverbed up the valley there are multiple river crossings. After about 13.5km competitors enter several bush tracks that mark the start of the upper Gorge, here the valley steepens significantly and the next 4km to Goat Pass take even the quickest athletes close to 40 minutes. This is one of the most stunning sections of the run and has many routes follow the wet foot prints is usually a safe bet. About 500m from Goat Pass you turn right up a smaller creek and scramble and wade you way up the final part of the climb. Goat Pass elevation is 1070m so you will have climbed around 800 vertical metres and run about 17.5km from Aickens transition to this point. There is a compulsory gear check at this point and you will have to show a set number of items that will be displayed on a sign at the bottom of the final climb. This is the same for everyone. Missing gear will attract major penalties or disqualification. Remember there are cut-off times at Big Boulders (2pm), Goat Pass (4pm) and Klondyke Corner (7:30pm). From Goat Pass it is around 13km to the transition at Klondyke Corner, the track is generally much more formed and includes some board walks over fragile ecosystems. It is also mainly downhill with the exception of a few short sharp climbs, the largest being Dudley s Knob where you will also see the photographers. The final 5-6km is flat but often some of the roughest riverbed to run in, when you reach the stock-bank you get some respite for about a km then the final 1500m is real ankle twisting stuff, especially as you will be tired. Concentrate and focus on getting safely to the cheering crowds waiting at the finish of the Day P a g e

24 Klondyke Corner Assistants On arrival at Klondyke Corner assistants turn right off the State Highway to the camping area. Camp where directed No camping between the shingle road and the bush because of the fire danger. Do not park in long grass, as hot exhausts can start fires. Park your vehicle in the designated mown areas and where directed by the officials. Limited amounts of mobility and disabled parking are available near the finish line. All competitors and assistants, even if you are not camping, are asked to park in the camping area. Keep emergency access ways (4m wide lane) clear. For the safety of all please do not exceed 5kph within the camping area or on gravel roads. DO NOT PARK ON THE ROAD VERGE OF STATE HIGHWAY 73 UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES No camping at Mt White Bridge. There is no charge to camp at Klondyke Corner. 24 P a g e Giardia is present in the Bealey River. Don t drink water from the Bealey River. We recommend that you fill up water containers at Kumara. Drinking and cooking water is available from the water tanker at Klondyke Corner. Unfortunately there isn t enough available to replenish campervan showers and toilet flushing. Please don t fill water containers from the tanker yourself as hygiene is important, let the staff do it. Competitors / support crew must supply their own tents and refreshments. Sheffield School will have lunch, dinner and breakfast for sale to competitors, assistants and friends at Klondyke Corner. These meals are not included in the entry fee, have cash available. Klondyke Corner is within a National Park so take all rubbish away with you and remember no dogs are allowed in the National Park. Competitors running shoes from the Kumara cycle stands will be delivered to Klondyke Corner where they can be collected near the turnoff to the camping ground. Make sure running shoes are labelled with the competitors race number. Assistants / Teammates must not run down the riverbed with competitors or take equipment from them or assist them in any way. Spot checks of competitor s compulsory equipment may be made after they finish the running section at Klondyke Corner. There is a race expo with sponsor stands, information point and a big screen for assistants to watch the progress of their competitor through the Mountain Run. There will be approximately four live feed cameras and timing points on the mountain section. There is also 3G coverage (Vodafone & Spark). Competitors TA bags from the start line will be available at the competitor recovery area. There will also be medical, Physio and massage services available at Klondyke Corner on Friday afternoon.

Some assistants choose to leave a vehicle at Klondyke Corner so their competitor can stay warm. Vehicles left at Klondyke Corner must wait until the last two day competitor reaches Mt White (its about a 40 min ride) before they leave Klondyke Corner to drive directly to Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge. Saturday Competitors There will be some shelter available at Klondyke Corner, including Kathmandu hubs and a marquee - Please do not take cycles inside the marquee, or lean them against marquee walls or poles or block access ways. These can be racked in the cycle racks near the start line. Leave your warm-up clothing in your numbered and named TA bag with the officials at Klondyke Corner before you line up to start. Don t leave valuables in it. This bag will be taken to the finish line at New Brighton and will be available as soon as you finish. All care, no responsibility. NO WARM UP CYCLING ON THE ROAD There will be a start at 7am for the competitors who anticipate being the slowest. This will be limited to 50 competitors and will also include some team competitors. Competitors in this group must report to the start at 6:40am. The remaining competitors must report to the Klondyke Corner start line by 7:05am and all competitors must be in their start group by 7:15am. No exceptions (you can keep you re warm up gear on till the last minute the bag drop is very near the start line. Competitors (except for early start) will start in order from Day 1 with the fastest competitors off first in groups of 10, at intervals of 1 minute. NOTE: Individuals and relay teams will all start together in order of finishing from day 1. All TANDEM TEAMS will start in groups of 5 (10 competitors) at 1-minute intervals 5 minutes after the last wave of individuals and teams and will go in fastest to slowest order from day 1. There will be a short briefing with any updated information prior to the start, then competitors start behind the Arch and roll forward across the timing mat as each wave is called, they then turn left and cycle along the main road for 15km down to the Mt White turn off. The riding is undulating with several very fast down hills please take extra care if it is wet, windy or you are in a bunch. Also be aware the steep downhill once you have climbed past the bluffs is often in poor condition and should be treated with extra caution. The one lane bridge is marshalled please follow their instructions. Once you reach the road end you turn left onto the gravel road and run with your bike 1km down to the river. It is highly recommended you carry some running shoes to put on or use mountain bike shoes for this stage it is not a pleasant run in socks, bare feet or road cycle cleats! The two day kayak transition is often further down the river bank than people expect usually around 300m once you finishing crossing the bridge this is assessed each year and situated where it is most practical for the large number of kayaks and competitors that leave from here. At the bottom of the road is a railway crossing you must obey the marshals here, if a train is coming STOP. Failure to obey marshals will result in disqualification. Once it is clear you cross the bridge and rack your bike on the left hand side of the road where your crew can also meet you. You then continue running to the right along the road to the kayak put in area. This area 27 P a g e

28 changes yearly depending on the path of the river, it is possible you will still have up to 300m to run until you reach your kayak.. Mt White Bridge Assistants Assistants must leave Klondyke Corner by 5am on Saturday morning and drive to Mt White Bridge. All vehicles must be parked across the bridge on the North Bank. No parking on the roadside. Please follow car parking official s instructions. Do not delay - leave early! If you don t need to be at Mt White Bridge don t drive down. Parking will begin at Mt White Bridge from 4.30am. First cars in will be parked closest to the transition. No Two day assistants are to walk from the Highway to Mt White Bridge. Assistants are not allowed to offer assistance or enter any part of the kayaking stage except at transitions. No stopping of vehicles to unload kayaks until you are parked. Assistants must walk with their kayaks on the riverside of the gravel road to the scrutineering area. Assistants must present their competitor s kayak and all compulsory equipment for scrutineering at Mt White Bridge before 7.00am. Once checked by scrutineers, assistants will then place their competitor s kayak and all compulsory equipment in numerical order on the north bank of the river. All kayaks arriving after 7.00am will be put in a holding area until numbers on the riverbank have been recorded. The scrutineering area must be cleared of assistants by 7am. This is to ensure an accurate check of all kayaks on the riverbank. Any cars departing Mt White bridge with a kayak (either a spare or withdrawn competitor) must stop and be cleared by a kayak official. Do not pack the equipment into the boat before scrutineering. Officials need to check it is all there. Have it on display, and then pack it in dry bags once scrutineering has occurred. All compulsory equipment must remain in the kayak once checked. It is highly recommended that competitors have additional warm clothing to put on for the kayak leg it can be extremely cold on the river especially if you have a swim. Do not underestimate the river and remember all compulsory thermal gear is in addition to what is being worn by the competitor when they leave Mt White. At the Mt White Bridge turn-off on Highway 73, Two day team competitors dismount and carry or run their cycles 1km down to the river and across Mt White Bridge where they rack their cycle on the left hand side of the road after crossing the bridge and where their assistant must collect their cycle afterwards. Competitors may use running shoes for the cycle and/or run to Mt White Bridge in this case they must carry their shoes with them from Klondyke Corner no 28 P a g e

29 assistance is allowed at the top of Mt White road. If a competitor or assistant is asked by an official to stop for a train, you must do so. No Two Day assistants are to wait at the highway for their competitor. No assistants are to wait on the railway side of Mt White Bridge or on Mt White Bridge. Assistants line up and wait for their competitor s number to be called. Competitors are not to take their bib off until they have reached their kayak. Assistants may help their competitor with the kayaking equipment and launch them into the river. Competitors must have their bib over the top of their buoyancy vest. Kayaking helmets must be worn. All assistants must remain at the river until the last Two day competitor has reached their kayak. Once your competitor has left, pack up and prepare to leave as soon as you are allowed. Do not delay your departure! Leave ASAP! Springfield School will have breakfast and lunch for sale at Mt White Bridge from 5am on Saturday until midday. These meals are not included in the entry fee. 31 STAGE 4 Kayak 70km Mt White Bridge to Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge Stage Cut-off times: 7pm 31 P a g e You must be past the Woodstock Checkpoint 8:15pmYou must be off the river Have compulsory gear ready for scrutineering before packing in kayak Race Bib (must be outer most garment and worn over top of buoyancy vest/pfd) Food & Drink Topo 50 Maps BV21 Cass, BW21 Springfield and BW22 Oxford (for assistants) and GPS route programmed in phone or device to get to Gorge Bridge transition The River Section is generally classified as Grade 2. You are likely to encounter wave trains, strong eddy lines, bluff turns, braid options, midstream rock hazards and tree hazards. If you are expecting to swim you should be paddling a more stable boat or getting more Grade 2 mileage. There is a significant amount of river safety on the course especially at recognised trouble spots but they cannot be everywhere and are there first and foremost to deal with emergencies you need to anticipate having to self-rescue if you swim. If you see someone in trouble on the river you must help them but ensure you don t put yourself in danger while doing so. Competitors enter the river and paddle downstream on a section of generally easy grade 1 riffles and multiple

32 braids. Good river reading skills will help you take the most efficient and fastest lines. The river is typically low around the race dates so expect it to be somewhere in the vicinity of cumec, measured at the Otarama Gauge - which is after the main Gorge so the top section is significantly less volume than this. The river level cutoff for the paddle section is no higher than 180 cumec but depends on a lot of other factors as it approaches this level. After about 30min of paddling you will reach the first significant rapids, commonly referred to as the rock gardens, these change yearly and are usually a mix of easy manoeuvring around boulders and often some of the larger wave trains on the section. Soon after this you pass the first timing Checkpoint Gooseberry stream. At all the Checkpoints you must move to the left of the river and paddle between the two buoys which record your timing chip also shout out your number to the manual timing crew. Continuing on down the river gradually increases in size though maintains multiple braids in places, keep your wits about you. You will then pass the Esk River confluence and shortly after the Esk Checkpoint, once you pass here you head into the main Gorge section. It is approximately 25km to the start of the Gorge. The main Gorge is approximately 30km long and the river is narrower and the flow swifter through this section with larger wave trains. Good skills to be prepared with for the Gorge are picking lines suitable for your ability, bluff turns and dealing with strong eddies. If the river is higher there are more options and often chicken routes but as the river drops the options are less and the river is a little more technical, but with much less power. The Gorge is absolutely stunning and if you are comfortable in your boat it will be one of the highlights of the race. A significant landmark to look for is the Red Bridge and this is about 12km from the exit of the Gorge. As you exit the Gorge you will pass the Woodstock Checkpoint 32 P a g e and you will have about 15km down to the kayak exit at Gorge Bridge. Make sure you go between the 2 buoys so that the timing picks up your transponder and your support crew will know you ve been passed here. This section is also braided and requires some good navigation at times. There are also often sections with Willow trees on them, stay away from the trees! During the section you may see some signage directing you in a particular direction if you see signage or are directed by an official to take a particular route you MUST do so failure to follow instructions could put you outside of the safety managed area. The kayak exit is on the river right; you paddle under the bridge and turn in towards the bank shortly after look for all the people. Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge At Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge assistants vehicles with kayak racks, campervans and trailers will be turned right at the milk shed about 1500m prior to Gorge Bridge and will be directed to parking areas there may be the opportunity to drive down and park in the river bed, (conditions dependent) for cars picking up kayaks only. Spectator and other support vehicles follow through the 30kph area and will be directed to park in the paddock on the left hand side of the road. Please follow the directions of the marshals. Please make sure if you are crossing the road you use a designated crossing and follow directions from officials. After parking their vehicles, assistants must place their competitor s cycle in the cycle racks (first in first served and not in numerical order). Flagpoles are NOT allowed on the cycle stands. Don t delay, but also don t panic, the first kayaker will not appear until around midday.

33 Please be on the riverbank when your competitor arrives there will be a timing display with a list of competitors as they pass through the various Checkpoints on the river. This information will also be on the App. There is also 3G coverage (networks to be confirmed). Note: Mobile coverage is patchy down in the riverbed at Gorge Bridge. When competitors arrive help them out of their kayak and take the kayak and gear to your vehicle immediately. If you wish to help your competitor with their cycling transition before loading the kayak, make sure the kayak is carried well away from the beach and outside the transition area. You may have a non-banded supporter remove the kayak from the transition area as long as they don t have any other involvement in the transition process. Please help out crews who are flying solo. Competitors finish kayaking under the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge on the south bank of the Waimakariri River, exit their kayak and leave it with their assistant. Assistants and team cyclists are not to cross over the timing mat. Competitors cross over the timing mat and then exchange the bib and timing transponder with the team cyclist who then runs up the small track that starts near the bottom of the gravel road on the right by the permanent toilets, and run around the outside of the 33 P a g e

34 trees in the centre of the Transition area and collect their cycles from the cycle stands. Assistants are NOT ALLOWED to assist their competitor to run up the track, help them on their cycle or push them up the road. Please limit the number of people running up the small track with competitors especially if there is a bunch of them. The Oxford Lions will have lunch for sale at Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge from 11am on Saturday. These meals are not included in the entry fee. Have cash available. If your competitor is overdue arriving at Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge approach the information point to find out where they are. Do not set off looking for them. The team will advise you if the competitor has had to pull out and where to collect the competitor. 34 P a g e

35 STAGE 5 Cycle 69.5 km Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge to New Brighton No assistants on the cycle course No ipods or similar audio devices to be used by competitors on the course Keep to the left, do not cross the centre line and obey the road code Stop for trains, and obey instructions from officials Approved reflective high visibility safety vest if leaving from Waimakariri Gorge Bridge on the cycle leg after 6pm, you will not be permitted to leave the transition without these items after 6pm. Reflective ankle bands if cycling after 6pm from Waimakariri Gorge Bridge. Front and rear lights must be attached to the cycle, and must be visible from 100m if leaving Gorge bridge after 6pm Helmet mounted lights may be used in addition to the cycle mounted lights Keep to the left, don t cross the centre line and obey the road code Stop for trains, and obey instructions from officials No drafting of cyclist not in the Coast to Coast. No drafting off vehicles. Cycle support may be available for competitors during the last cycling stage from the back up cycle crew. Once competitors have collected their cycle gear they proceed to the south-western corner of the transition (will be sign posted) where they use a small track that takes them out onto the sealed road. Competitors then turn right and cross the one lane bridge and proceed up the small climb which is the only climb on the whole final cycle. Stay on the main road for 8.8 km before you will be directed right down South Eyre road and 35 P a g e

36 continue down here for 41.2 km (including 26km without a turn). Turn right onto Tram road and follow the road over the bridge that crosses State Highway 1 for 2.75km. Then you will turn right onto the Main north road and follow this across the Waimakariri River and into Christchurch. You follow this for 7.75km from the turn off until you reach Prestons Road where you turn left and follow for 2.5km and then turn left into Mairehau Road. Follow for 2.2km then turn left into Beach road and follow for 1.75km. You follow the road round to the right and it becomes Marine parade and the finish is within site. You will ride 2.3km down Marine parade before dismounting directly in front of the New Brighton Pier, hand you cycle to the waiting marshal and run across the sand and up the steps to the finish. NOTE some major intersections are controlled by Police, if they are called away you will need to follow road rules and give way to other traffic. There is an athlete recovery area, food, drink, massage and medical as well as your transitions bags with warm clothes in them. Your crew (with wristbands) will be able to meet you behind the finish line and you will also have direct access to the beach so you can walk down, touch the water and complete your journey from Coast to Coast. There are also showers available a short walk from the finish line. Assistants / Teammates After assistants/team mates have loaded the kayak onto their vehicle at Gorge Bridge, they must proceed immediately to the finish at New Brighton Beach. Assistants/teammates must travel from Waimakariri River Gorge Bridge to the New Brighton finish by SH73 this will be sign posted. Assistants/teammates must not follow any competitor on the course through to New Brighton. Assistants/teammates cannot offer assistance to the competitors during any cycle stage or give splits to their or other athletes please help keep a level playing field for everyone. Assistants/teamates must not wait at sites along the cycle course through Christchurch. New Brighton Finish Welcome to Christchurch! The police have warned competitors and assistants to be vigilant with security of their cars and equipment. There will be a finish festival at New Brighton with a big screen, entertainment and a variety of food and beverage stalls. Event sponsors will also have an expo set up where you can purchase event merchandise. There will be a fireworks display at 10:30pm that usually coincides with the last finishers in the one day event. Competitors dismount their bikes just to the south of the New Brighton Pier, an official will rack their bike for them and they run through the finishing chute (mix of tar seal and then sand). If you are evacuated from any part of the course by helicopter or jet boat, you must report to an official immediately on disembarking. Do not try to find your assistants, team member or family until our officials have checked you off the course. This is very important. If you are withdrawn during the kayak leg your number will be displayed at Gorge Bridge and your support crew will be informed of competitor s status and where they can meet them. Kayaks will be brought out by Jet boat at the end of the day and can be collected by support crews from Woodstock or the Waimak Alpine Jet company on Sunday (entrance off SH73 near Springfield). The office is open 7 days per week, opening at 8am and closing at 5pm until Christmas and then closing at 6pm after Christmas. Plan B - Bad Weather Alternative Should the Coast to Coast mountain run route through the Mingha Deception be affected by bad weather and/or high river flows then a running stage (31 km) will be held on the farm track from Aickens to Deception footbridge and then follow the State Highway from Deception footbridge to Klondyke Corner on a mix of tracks and road. There is major roadwork s through this area for the next 2 years so the alternative course route may be subject to changes based on these works. Full details will be supplied closer to the event but the route will follow the main state highway 73 route in general with tracks and detours used as possible. Should the Coast to Coast kayak route down the Waimakariri River be affected by bad weather and/or high river flows, there will be a cycling stage (86 km) from Klondyke Corner to Waimakariri River Gorge bridge, followed by a further cycling stage (69 km) from Waimakariri River Gorge bridge to New Brighton, Christchurch on the standard cycling route and then a run to the finish. Should the lower Waimakariri River be unaffected by the weather and/or river flows. There will be a cycling stage (86 km) from Klondyke Corner to Gorge Bridge or down the old West Coast road to the cycle/kayak transition, the kayak stage will run downstream to between the two State Highway bridges where the kayak/cycle transition will be on the river left, competitors will then cycle to New Brighton and the finish. The put in for this kayak section will be advised at the pre-race briefly on Thursday if applicable. Due to the changeable nature of the river it is impossible to confirm which put in until closer to the race. We will endeavour to give you the longest kayak possible; this will range from 60km to 35km and is a mix of grade 1 and 2 rapids. areas are usually not difficult themselves but have dangerous consequences if people find themselves out of their boats when heading into. Note the main dangers on the lower Waimakariri are trees it is highly likely that to give you the longest kayak possible that there will be some compulsory portages around high consequence areas. 43 Railway Lines & Crossing Safety There are railway line crossings on the cycle and run stages. If alarm bells are sounding or the Official requests that you stop, you must stop. If a competitor does not stop they will be disqualified from the race immediately. TRACKS ARE FOR TRAINS NEVER walk down tracks or close by tracks. Only cross a railway track at a place set aside for crossing. Tracks are for trains! TRAINS ARE QUIET ALTHOUGH trains are noisy up close they are hard to hear from a distance. Trains can surprise car drivers and people walking near tracks. Make sure you look both ways as well as listen for trains. TRAINS TAKE A LONG TIME TO STOP EVEN if a driver can see you, they cannot stop a train quickly. Trains are heavy and can weigh up to 1,500 tonnes, the same as 1,000 cars. They can also travel at high speeds. Even a small train can take four rugby fields to stop! Trains take a long time to stop. LEVEL CROSSINGS RULES A TRAIN driver is on full alert when approaching a level crossing. Make the driver s job easier by obeying the signal and level crossing rules. Look for signs, barrier arms and flashing red lights and listen for the warning bells. If you are in a car be sure to tell the driver to stay well back from the tracks, behind the marked lines. STAND WELL CLEAR If YOU see a train coming stand well away from the tracks. Be aware and stand well clear. DON T JUMP ONTO TRAINS TRAINS are fun to ride but only as a ticketed passenger inside a carriage. Even when a train is traveling slowly you should never try and jump onto a moving train. Always wait until a train has stopped before getting on or off. YOU CAN T OUTRUN A TRAIN NEVER walk on a rail bridge or through a rail tunnel. You can t outrun a train, and tunnels and bridges are only wide enough for trains. You will have nowhere safe to go. SHOCKING RESULTS IN STORE SOME trains are powered by electricity, sent through power lines above the tracks. It is dangerous to go near these lines or let any object like a ball or kite go near them. These lines carry huge amounts of electricity and you will get an electric shock. STONES CAN FLY LIKE BULLETS NEVER leave things on railway tracks or throw stones at trains. You could derail the train and look out if you re close by! Those stones can fly like bullets and could really hurt you! KEEP YOURSELF SAFE YOU NEED to keep yourself safe. No matter what your friends say you need to be very careful around trains, tracks and crossings. Stand up, be smart and stay safe! REMEMBER TRACKS ARE FOR TRAINS 43 P a g e

44 Two Day Assistants Timetable This is an example of the logistics for Two day assistants over the four days. Modify it for your own needs. Pre-departure: Assistants and competitors to read and understand all entry forms, confirmation and e- newsletters to know the event rules. Then re-read them! Download event App and print or download handbook make sure it is the latest version Assistants understand the transitions and what needs to happen in them highly recommended for athletes to provide an excel spreadsheet of there gear and expectations at each transition for their crew (see sample below) Make sure competitors know what Assistants will be wearing where they expect to be set up (which side of TA s, towards end on left hand side etc.) think about having unique or brightly coloured clothing and hats to be visible at transitions Cycles and lights serviced and signed off prior to event if possible to avoid queuing at registration Helmets checked and signed off prior to event if possible to avoid queuing at registration All other gear is checked and serviced (kayaks, shoe laces etc.) Pre-book massage at Klondyke Corner Buy food for assistants or provide them with CASH Runner to shave legs for strapping Everyone to check they have all compulsory gear and signed off prior to event if possible to avoid queuing at registration + any extra gear the competitor might need in worst case scenario if feeling much colder than anticipated on arriving at river etc Everyone to go over roles and responsibilities Carry out Didymo treatment - running shoes, kayak and kayaking equipment Number competitor shoes, bags, bike, kayak and helmets Check s, App and website for any last minute updates Don t bring any dogs they are not allowed in the National Park! Wednesday Prepare all gear for packing Fill up cars with petrol Thursday 11am 3pm Meet. Pressure in the cycle tyres should be kept lower than normal and avoid getting car exhaust on the cycle rack. Check vehicle registration number is clear and put flag on kayak. Depart Christchurch. Buy lunch en-route. Register at Kumara registration and collect race pack. Get ankles strapped if needed. If you want to buy merchandise it s a good idea to get it here as some may sell out. Complete gear checks of the mountain running stage and cycling stage equipment if not done prior Remember to pack your compulsory run gear so it is easy to access for the gear check at Goat Pass. 4pm 5pm Set up tent and camping gear Race Briefing at Kumara Race course 6:30pm Return to accommodation or have dinner at Kumara racecourse from Food stalls. Fix gear for morning including compulsory gear, drink bladders, gels etc. Agree morning shower routine etc. organize cycle to run transition gear and set alarm. 44 P a g e

45 Friday 5am 45 P a g e Alarm to go off. Everyone to have organised their own breakfast foods and drink. Showers etc. Final gear check. Remember Bib, transponder, reflective ankle bands, cycle lights, helmet etc. 5:45am Competitor arrives at cycle stands. 5:45am Assistants drive to end of cycle stage (start of run) at Aickens corner and park. Anyone wanting a toilet stop is advised to do so early before the queues form. Order breakfast from Moana School at Aickens for assistants. 6:30am Transition closes for bike racking 6:45am Final race briefing with any last minute instructions. 7:00am Race starts 8:45am Assistants in bright coloured jackets or clothing. There is usually a prize for the best-dressed support crew. Competitors will arrive shortly and will meet assistants in the transition area. (Maps of all routes & transition areas in handbooks). Assistant take cycles to car in car park and secure cycles to car with a security wire lock. Assistants travel to Klondyke corner. 11am 2pm 7pm Set up camp at Klondyke Corner. Buy lunch from Sheffield School catering marquee. Locate running shoes from the cycle stands. Runners should arrive within the next two hours. Recovery formula ready. Massages via SportsMed. Ensure someone has responsibility for bib and transponder! Physio and other medical issues are caterer for here by SportsMed. Assistants to provide and cook meal. Assistants also to go over setup for Kayaks fluid system etc and practice transitions. Confirm Saturday 5am 6am arrangements for the morning within the team, Check compulsory gear. Check cycle, bib and transponder stay with the competitor at Klondyke Corner! Assistant with kayak leaves Klondyke Corner and drives to Mt White Bridge for kayak setup. Breakfast from Springfield School at Mt White Bridge. Competitor stays at Klondyke corner for cycle stage start. It is cold here until the sun rises. The individuals must report to the Klondyke Corner start line by 7.00am (or 6:40 if in early group). Have warm gear and your TA bag to deposit clothing into at start. 6:40am There will be a start at 7am for the competitors who anticipate being the slowest. This will be limited to 50 competitors maximum and will also include some team competitors. 7am The remaining competitors must report to the Klondyke Corner start line by 7:00am and all competitors must be in their start group by 7:10am. No exceptions. Competitors (except for early start) will start in order from Day 1 with the fastest competitors off first in groups of 10, at intervals of 1 minute. NOTE: Individuals and teams will all start together in order of finishing from day one. It is roughly a minute cycle plus a 5 minute run for the majority of competitors from Klondyke Corner to Mt White. 8am Competitor carries cycle down hill and over Mt White Bridge, and racks cycle just over the bridge on the left. Brightly dressed assistants guide their competitor to their kayak. Competitor changes into kayak gear and assistant takes kayak to river.

46 After competitor has departed, assistant picks up cycle and carries back to the vehicle. Assistants then drive to Waimakariri River Gorge transition. On the way buy food for lunch in Springfield or Sheffield. At Gorge Bridge, the cycles will need to be setup on the cycle stands at the top of the hill. Place towels or another cover over the tyres to keep them cool if it s hot. 1pm Kayakers should arrive within the next two hours to Gorge Bridge. There is an info point at the stage finish. Competitor runs / walks up the track, and get cycling! Don t assist them up the track we don t want the competitor to get disqualified. (You can help them change gear at cycle racks though) Take kayak to car and collect towels and shoes from cycle stand area. Proceed to New Brighton with recovery formula and fluids. 3:30pm Cyclists should arrive within the next three hours depending on their condition, the time leaving Gorge Bridge, the wind and if there was anyone to cycle with. Finish line - cheer your competitor in and give them recovery drinks etc. Sunday 8am 10am 12pm Eat brunch at Addington Racecourse (pre purchase tickers online), order photos and it s your last chance to buy merchandise. Prize giving starts at Addington Racecourse Moa Wrap BBQ starts - time for competitors to buy assistants a well deserved drink! Assistants Feedback Your views are very important to us.
