The portfolios are a record of your 4-H participation this year. Portfolios should be turned in in order to attend Achievement Day which is tentatively scheduled for April 18, Why do a portfolio? Writing things down helps us remember what s happening and what we need to do. 4-H portfolios are an important way to keep track of our 4-H experiences. Everyone feels good when portfolios are worked on throughout the year and completed by the deadline. It will be more fun and less frustrating if you spend some time each month on your portfolio. Records are a part of life. You ll have records related to your money, insurance, taxes and property. Pictures are fun records of what you ve done. You ll enjoy your pictures much more if they are organized in a way that you can find them easily. Doing a 4-H portfolio is a part of 4-H life that helps in many ways. Remember: 1: Competitive Deadline: 4-H members portfolios are due on March 1, 2013 if the 4-H member wants their book judged and to be considered for Outstanding Record Book Awards. (Agents will pick up these books at each school on March 1, 2013.) 2: Non-competitive deadline: Members who turn in books after March 1, 2013 are eligible to attend Achievement Day, but their book will not be judged and will not be considered for Outstanding Record Book awards. 4-H club leaders may ask for your book prior to March 1st. It is the responsibility of the 4-H club member to know when their school club leader wants the books! My club leader wants my books on: Don t delay-begin working on your books today! Demonstration/Talk Contests December Trivia Question Cloverbuddy Meetings Fishing Clinic Some Hints for Developing Your Portfolio: 1. Be Neat. Use a pencil or computer to type information. Clip 4-H news articles and 4-H newsletter articles in which your name appeared from the paper and/or newsletter. Look on the St. Martin Parish 4-H Facebook page for pictures as well. 5. Portfolios are more simple if you do them one section at a time. 6. ASK for HELP from club leader or 4-H agents. But caring is not just for the holidays. Why is it so important that we be CARING? Here are a few reasons: CARING makes others feel like they belong so they are not alone. People who CARE about others feel better about themselves, too. CARING people help others when they are sad, hurt, or ill without expecting something in return. We all need love, respect, and concern that s what CARING people give to others. Decorate the heart and give it to someone in need to show you CARE!
7 Agcellent Information-Forestry (Trees) Forestry is the # 1 commodity in Louisiana. In 2011, the industry made a total contribution of 3 billion dollars to In Louisiana, Forestry is the #1 commodity. It brings a lot of money to the state. Christmas Trees are part of this industry. In 2011, there were 38 Christmas tree producers in the state. They produced 11,896 trees and the gross farm value was $594,800. The life cycle of an evergreen tree has three stages: -Cone: Evergreen tree growth starts with the cone. Through wind pollination, seeds develop on the seed cone. In nature, these seeds mature and produce new evergreen trees, which can take several years. - Seedling: Young trees or seedlings are planted in seed beds. Many evergreen producers purchase seedlings from specialty growers. The seedlings grow here until they are about 3 to 5 years old. After this time, the seedling is replanted in a field. - Evergreen Tree: While in the field, the job of the tree is to keep growing. The evergreen grower takes care of the tree by pruning and shearing it, which is like giving the tree a hair cut. The trees grow in the field for several years until they are ready to be cut or harvested. In the spring, new trees are planted and the cycle begins again! How to make a 3-D Tree. Follow the directions below to make your own 3-D Tree. - Cut out the tree, including the tab at one edge. - Use a craft knife or scissors to cut a 1-inch slit along the outside edge of the tree (near the cone picture). - Fold the tree in thirds along the dotted lines. - Then, insert the tab into the 1-inch slit. - Add tape along the side for extra reinforcement.
