Record Books Due Soon: Portfolios were given out at the January meetings and record books will be picked up at your March meeting or you can bring them to our office no later than March 17, Only 4-Hers who complete and turn in a Record Book will be eligible to attend 4-H Fest. Parish Fashion Show: The Parish Fashion Show will be held on Feb 25, 2014 at the Amite Elementary School. You need to be at the stage in your garment by 5:45 p.m. for a practice session. Scripts & Ready-to-Wear forms are due into the office no later than Feb. 20, 2014 at 4 p.m. 8 th - 12 th graders need to turn in garment and scripts on Feb. 18, 2014 at 4 p.m. Call office for the Ready to Wear forms.

2 Beef Poster Contest: The 4-H members may participate in the Beef Poster Contest by bringing their posters to the cookery on Feb 25, 2014 at 6 p.m. or to the 4-H Office by Feb 24 by 4:00 p.m. Rules are: Poster must be made on 11" X 14" white poster board only. Do not attach anything to the poster that is more than 1/8 inch thick. Be sure to place your name, school, grade and parish on the back of the poster in the upper right corner. Beef Cookery Contest: The Beef Cookery will be held February 25, 2014 at the Amite Elementary School, beginning at 6 p.m. Contestants in all three divisions must: 1. Bring to the contest a prepared beef dish containing 1 pound of ground beef. This dish must be cold and only 1 serving needed. 2. Bring a copy of the recipe with the dish. Your name, school / division should be on the back. This must be written in recipe form and placed under the dish. Recipes may be used in publicity and printed on publications by the donors. 3. A contestant may enter as many divisions as he or she wishes, but may only enter one dish per division & can win overall in only one division. All parish contestants will receive ribbons. Overall winners will receive a plaque and represent the Parish in the District competition. 4. Beef Scoring Factors: 1. Recipe - correct format and requirements - 5 points 2. Appearance / Presentation- 30 points 3. Taste - 65 points The divisions and their requirements are: Low-calorie Main Dish: a dish which provides less than 300 calories per serving. Calculations of calories must be shown on the recipe. Quick and Easy Main Dish: a dish that is ready to serve in less than one hour. The time needed for each step and for cooking or baking must be stated on the recipe. One Dish Meal: a dish that provides foods from at least three of the main food groups. The food group must be stated on the recipe. **PLEASE NOTE: Participants are NOT to deliberately enter more than one entry of the SAME DISH in the same category. For example, you may not cook one dish and have two siblings/friends/classmates/etc. enter the identical dishes** Sugar Cookery Contest: The Sugar Cookery will be held February 25, 2014 at the Amite Elementary School, beginning at 6 p.m. The contest will be divided into four divisions: 1-Cakes, 2-Candy, 3-Cookies, 4-Pies.Contestants in all four divisions must: 1. Bring a prepared sugar dish to the contest. This dish must be cold and you should bring one (1) serving unless more is needed for presentation reasons. The dish must use at least one-half (1/2) cup of sugar. The sugar used in the recipe may be granulated sugar, brown (light or dark) sugar, powdered sugar, or any combination of the above. Mixes are permitted as long as 1/2 cup of additional sugar is added to the recipe. There can be NO raw eggs in the final product. 2. Bring a copy of the recipe with the dish. Your name, school, and division should be on back of the recipe. This must be written in recipe form and placed under the dish. 3. A contestant may enter as many divisions as he or she wishes, but may only enter one dish per division and can win overall in only one division. All parish contestants will receive ribbons. 3 Beef /Sugar Commodity Ambassador Program see below for guidelines Ambassador (Illustrated Talk) Division I (Grades 4-6) Contestant: a. designs a standard poster 22 x 28 relating to one of the five topics concerning Beef/Sugar: - production - food preparation and nutritive value - food safety - processing - marketing b. presents a 2-3 minute explanation of poster subject c. responds to questions from judges. Division II (Grades 7-9) Contestant: a. designs a standard poster 22 x 28 relating to one of the five topics concerning Beef/Sugar: - production - food preparation and nutritive value - food safety - processing - marketing b. prepares an essay not to exceed 500 words or 3 typed pages, double spaced, about the selected subject c. presents a 2-3 minute explanation of subject d. responds to questions from judges. Division III-(Grades 10-12) 1. The contestant will present a 5-8 minute oral presentation following current guidelines of the Beef / Sugar commodity illustrated talk contests. (Only Egg Illustrated Talk requires a dish). Posters or PowerPoint presentations may be used. Rules for the use of PowerPoint presentations are attached. Costumes based on theme are acceptable. No notes or outlines, other than wording on the poster are to be used while giving the presentation. 2. One table and one easel will be provided. Use standard background/design - imported backgrounds are usually distorted or do not show at all. Do not use sounds

5 9th Annual Tangi 4-H Benefit Pet Parade and Family Fun Fest This event is Open to the Public!! Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate! Date: Sunday, March 30, 2014 (rain date April 6 th ) Time:Registration 11:30 a.m. & Check In 11:30-1:00 Contests 1:30 p.m., Parade 3: 00 p.m. Location: Zemurray Park, Hammond, LA Proceeds to benefit the Janice M. Brown Memorial 4-H Scholarship Fund Entry information: $20.00 per pet which includes t-shirt (pre-registered by March 25 th ) $25.00 per pet registering after March 25, 2014 or day of event. PLUS pet food/supplies to donate to the Tangipahoa Animal Control Center. Those who do not bring a supply donation for the Animal Control Center will need to make a monetary donation of at least $5.00 to the Animal Control Center upon check-in at the parade. *All 4-H members in one household will get participation / award credit for their pet(s). (Ex. Two 4-H members in a family with only one pet both get credit.) Only dogs and cats allowed. Must be non-aggressive and on leashes or in pet carriers AT ALL TIMES. Non-motorized "Floats" (wagons, etc.) are welcome. Must bring own "throws" (candy, beads, etc.) Optional contests ($1.00 fee per contest): Best Groomed, Best Costume, Best Float, (NEW CONTEST)*Best PawwlyWood Themed Float, Friendliest, and Pet / Owner Look-a-like. TOP DOG & TOP CAT: The one dog and one cat who has entered 3 or more competitions and is deemed by the judges as the best overall. Categories: All Cats, Small dogs (those classified as miniature, teacup, or small enough to hold in one adult hand), Medium dogs (can easily be held in arms by owner) Large dogs (the big ones!) New Most Adorable K-9/Feline Contest Get the most votes for your pet through monetary donations. Take your pet or a photo of your pet to friends, neighbors, relatives, sports team members, etc. and ask them to make donations to 4-H as votes for your pet. The pet raising the most money will be named, our Oscar winner for They will lead Parade and owner will receive FREE TSHIRT. Due date for Oscar donations is March 24 th. 6 Tangipahoa Parish 4-H PET PARADE POSTER / TSHIRT DESIGN CONTEST 4-H members may participate in the Pet Parade poster/t-shirt design contest by turning in posters to their leaders at their February club meeting or in 4-H office on or before Monday, February 24 at 4:00 p.m. RULES 1. Poster must be half of a full-size poster board, horizontal or vertical on poster board only. 2. Do not attach anything to the poster that is more than 1/16 inch thick. 3. The poster must contain the following information: 9 th Annual Tangipahoa Parish 4-H Pet Parade Sunday, March 30, 2014 Registration at 11:30 a.m. Zemurray Park, Hammond, LA Must also include the following: Entry fee - $20.00 per pre-registered pet and $25.00 the day of the parade. Dogs and Cats ONLY (must be on leash or in pet carrier), OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! Fun pet contests! Activities and Concession Booths! Family Friendly Atmosphere! Proceeds to benefit the Janice M. Brown Memorial 4-H Scholarship Fund. 4. Entrants must place their name, school and club name, grade, and phone number on the back of the poster in the upper right hand corner. 5. There will be two categories for judging computer generated posters (all or part) and non-computer generated. 6. Posters may not be returned to 4-H members. Winning posters will be announced at the Pet Parade. Posters will be used throughout the area to promote and publicize the event. 7. Overall Winning Poster will be used for the Pet Parade T-shirt design and student will receive a $60 credit towards the participant s age appropriate 4H camp of their choice (4H summer camp, Challenge Camp, 4H University, etc.) Entrants will receive points and ribbons as in other poster contests. Additional prizes will also be awarded to overall winners. Tangipahoa Parish 4-H Spring Garden Day Poster Contest Posters are due at the extension office in Amite by Monday, February 10, 2014 or if you have them ready they can be turned in at your club s January meeting. Selected posters will be used throughout the parish for advertising Spring Garden day. The posters should be pretty, attract attention, and easy to read from at least 10 feet or more away since they may be displayed in a business window. RULES 1. Poster must be half of a full-size poster board, horizontal or vertical on poster board 2. The poster must contain the following information: Spring Garden Day, Saturday, March 8, 2014, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Hammond Research Station, Old Covington Hwy, Hammond, LA. Admission $5.00 per vehicle. 3. The poster must also include the following information: Kids Activities; Master Gardeners Plant Sale; Educational Gardening Exhibits; Gardening Advice; Educational Seminars; Concessions Available. Event sponsored by the Tangipahoa Parish Master Gardener s Association and LSU AgCenter. 4. Be sure to place your name, school (or club), grade and phone number on the back of the poster in the upper right hand corner. 5. Winning posters will be displayed at Spring Garden Day. Cash award(s) will be presented at Achievement Day. Two overall winners (one in each category) get 25 points and $25.00 cash each from the Tangipahoa Parish Master Gardeners Association. Club points per age division: 15 for 1 st place, 10 for 2 nd place, and 5 for 3 rd place. Award ribbons will be sent to club leaders after the judging.
