Youth in 4th 12th grades competed. The first place winners are now eligible to compete at the region level and represent Hamilton County. Senior High will compete in February and the 4th 8th graders will compete in March. 2 4-H Archery Club News The club officers delivered donated items to the McKamey Animal Shelter. They delivered pet supplies and office supplies. The H Archery Jamboree will be held March 24th at Tennessee Tech University. If you would like to be added to the interest list, call the Extension office, We are now taking names for next fall. 4-H Congress Any 9th or 10th grade 4-H member is eligible to attend the 2018 Tennessee 4-H Congress to be held in Nashville, Tennessee. The deadline to register is Friday, February 2, Hamilton County Farm Bureau is supporting our delegation this year. An adult leader is also needed to attend with the delegation from Hamilton County. 4-H Congress will be held March 18-21, 2018

3 4-H Chick Chain 4-H youth can get baby chicks to raise and bring 3 chickens to the Hamilton County Fair in September. Registration deadline is Friday, February 9, Go to the site for the registration form and more information: 4-H Honey Bee Essay The deadline for the Honey Bee Essay is February 16th. The 2018 Essay Topic: What's So Super About the Super Organism in the Honey Bee? State Award First Place: $100 Second Place: $75 Third Place: $50 National Award First Place: $750 Second Place:$500 Third Place: $250 All essays should be ed to Justin Crowe, jcrowe3@utk.edu, with Beekeeping Essay in the subject line. Make sure the essay has the student s name, school, county, mailing address, address, and phone number at the bottom. The honey bee continues to be on everyone s mind. From beekeepers to scientists to the public, the honey bee is a great super organism. What does this mean to you, to your community and to the world? Put on your thinking caps and GO! 4 4-H Healthy Lifestyles submitted by Luke Ford Healthy Living: Sleep, Why You Need It! An important aspect of staying healthy is getting 7-9 hours of sleep a day. While asleep your body works toward healing its self and restoring its chemical balance. The body also commits information from short term memory into long term memory during sleep. Taking this time away from your brain can lead to having trouble remembering things you've done and learned, as well as having a chemical imbalance that will negatively effect your mental state. You will likely become increasingly irritable and have difficulty thinking. Many people substitute caffeine for sleep, in order to keep them selves awake and alert, but there's only so much caffeine can do. When we drink caffeine it binds to the part of our brains that tell us we need sleep and as a result they block those signals from reaching us. This means that instead of replacing our energy with caffeine we are really just shutting out and ignoring our exhaustion which is extremely unhealthy to the point of being dangerous when used routinely. In order to live healthily the body needs water, air, healthy and nutritious foods and sleep. Ultimately no one of these is any less necessary than the others. Come to our 4-H Day Camp 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Day Camp There will be a 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Day Camp on April 4th, 5th and 6th, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Extension office. This day camp is open to 4th 6th graders in Hamilton County. There are 20 spaces for this camp. Teens will be involved in the planning and implementation of this camp. There will be fun workshops with food, health, science, games and more! Call the office for a registration packet. Cost is $20 per person. Deadline to register is Friday, March 23, 2018, or until spaces are filled.

5 4-H Portfolio due dates One component of the 4-H program is portfolios. These are records that build each year and 4-H youth keep a record of all they do in their project area, leadership and citizenship. Junior High and Senior High youth can win trips for their portfolio work. Senior high youth compete for scholarships and national trips based upon their project work. Portfolio due dates for Hamilton County are below. If you need to schedule a work session for your portfolio, call the Extension office. Please note that the Junior High and Senior High portfolios will be submitted through an online process from the Extension office (scanned in document). Senior High Citizenship or Leadership portfolio due January 30th for state level submission (trip to 4-H Congress, if selected) Junior (4th & 5th) portfolios due April 30, 2018 Junior High (6th, 7th, 8th) portfolios due April 11, 2018 Senior High (9th 12th) portfolios due April 24, 2018 (trip to 4-H Roundup competition for scholarships and National 4-H Congress trip) 4-H Game Night We are working on a date for 4-H Game Night. There is a 4-H Game Night coming soon. Look for more information in the February 4-H Update. There will be a variety of games and fun! 6 4-H & JOANN Partnership 4-H now has a partnership with JOANN Fabrics and Crafts and all 4-H members can benefit from the partnership. There is a special kick-off event scheduled. Check out the details below. JOANN Fabrics and Crafts 2020 Gunbarrel Road, Suite 198 Chattanooga, TN :00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Come anytime during the hours noted above and make a Valentine s Day Card with other 4-H youth. The cards will be delivered to an organization later in the month. JOANN is also offering 4-H members a special discount of 15% each day for most items. All are welcome to the kick-off event. 7 4-H Honor Club The Hamilton County 4-H Honor Club members are collecting clean towels and blankets to donate to the Humane Society. You may drop off your donated items at the Extension office through February 1, The Honor Club is open to all 5th 12th graders in Hamilton County. 4-H Cornbread Cook-off Calling all 4th graders! You have the opportunity to submit your recipe in the 2018 National Cornbread Festival. Included at the end of the 4-H Update is information about the H Cornbread Cook-Off Contest. This is a fun and exciting opportunity and the possibility to win $500. Deadline to enter the youth division is March 1st. Adults you may enter too! 8 Support Hamilton County 4-H We need your support. We are working to establish a 4-H Endowment for Hamilton County through the Tennessee 4-H Foundation. There is an anonymous donor who is a Hamilton County 4-H Alum who is challenging individuals, families, and others to support this effort. There will be a $1 for $1 match, up to $1,000, donated to the endowment fund. The donations for the match must be received by the end of the year, January 31, 2018, to be eligible for the match (you can donate to this fund at any time). If we can get to the $5,000 mark we will begin receiving funds from the endowment. See the information below to make a donation and support Hamilton County 4-H. We have $3,000 previously donated by Farm Bureau Board of Hamilton County, John E. Mayfield Charitable Trust and another donor. We have received individual donations of $400 towards the $1,000 goal. Help us get to this goal. 9 4-H Homeschool Club The next 4-H Homeschool Club meets at the Extension office, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., 1st floor meeting room. This club is open to 4th-12th graders in Hamilton County. Meetings are usually held on the third Friday of most months. Other meetings include: February 16th, March 16th, April 20th and May 18th 4-H Horse Club Look for information about the 4-H Hippology and Horse Bowl results in the next 4-H Update. The Mane Attraction 4-H Horse Club members meet the first Monday of the month. The meetings are held at 6:30 p.m., Saddle Pals, Soddy Daisy. For more Information call the Extension office. This club is open to 4th-12th graders in Hamilton County. They are preparing for the Eastern Region Horse Judging contest to be held in the spring. 4-H Horse enrollment is due March 1, 2018, for those who plan to show their horse or horses. 4-H Fashion and Design Conference 4-H Fashion and Design Conference This conference registration is open. The deadline to register is March 1, This conference is open to 6th to 12th grade 4-H youth. June 5-7, 2018 Mainstay Suites Conference Center, Pigeon Forge Cost: $ Call the office for a registration packet. Each county has four spaces available on March 1st. This conference has filled up the first day of registration in the past. A waiting list will be available. Registration form and payment are due to hold your space.

10 4-H Junior Camp 4-H Junior Camp will be held June 11 15, This camp is open to 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Cost information will be out soon. Camp scholarship information should be available in the next 4-H Update. Space is limited for this camp. Adult leaders are also needed along with teen leaders (based upon the number of campers and gender of the campers). If you are interested in attending as a leader, call the Extension office. More Extension information Pigs on Parade Adopt a pig through the Pigs on Parade program to encourage savings. Your group or business can pick up a piggy bank and decorate it showing what you do. Market your business / group. There are divisions for competition. Call the Extension office for more information, Contact Agent June Puett for more details. 23rd Annual Master Gardener Beginner & Newcomer Classes Call the office for a registration form for this series of classes if you want to know more about gardening, horticulture, or new to the area. This is a great class filled with basics that will provide knowledge and skills. Classes begin March 6th, 50 spaces only, cost $50. Classes held March 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th.
