2 YOU MAY NEVER KNOW WHAT RE- SULTS WILL COME OF YOUR ACTIONS, BUT IF YOU DO NOTHING, THERE WILL BE NO RESULTS. MAHATMA GANDHI IF YOU ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO BE NOR- MAL, YOU WILL NEV- ER KNOW HOW AMAZ- ING YOU CAN BE. MAYA ANGELOU The 4-H Story Section of your portfolio is a chance for you to tell us all about yourself! Use this section and the guidelines below to write an amazing story about your year in 4-H and what you plan to do next! PART I: INTRODUCTION: Tell us how old you are, where you go to school, about your family. How did you find out about 4-H? What are your favorite hobbies? Add anything you think is interesting about you! EXAMPLE: Hello, my name is Mrs. Carrie and I have been in 4-H for 4 years. I attend school at Vinton Middle school and I am in the 7th grade. I have 1 brother, Jerrod, who is also in 4-H at the High School. 4-H has been very important to me and allows me to explore new things. I first heard about 4-H because my brother joined when he was 9 years old. I enjoy riding my horses and going to rodeos on the weekends. I also enjoy hanging out with my friends and drawing and reading my favorite book. PART II: BODY: Tell about the project(s) that your participated in this year. How did you learn that 4- H offered this project? Tell about your favorite parts of the project and the parts that may not have been your favorites. Let us know about your club meetings too! What was your favorite part of meetings? What contest(s) were your favorite? EXAMPLE: This year I participated in 3 project: Horse, Sheep, and Veterinary Science. This is the 3rd year for me to complete the horse and sheep projects. I show may horses every year at the Parish, District, and State horse shows. I feed my horses 2 times per day and take care of them all the time. My sheep are shown at the livestock shows each year. They are fun and required a lot of time to work with them and take care of them. Shearing sheep at the shows is one of my favorite things to do. This is my first year to complete the Veterinary Science project book. It was very interesting and allowed me to explore a career opportunity. I learned that veterinarians have very busy lives and must be able to handle a lot of stress. They not only take care of the sick animals, but they also help the owners when their animals are sick. I enjoyed my club meetings this year but I wish they could be longer. Our agent is always fun and has fun things for us to. We learned how to do yoga this year and learned all about photography! I found out through our 4-H meetings that it is very important to stay organized and always be prepared. PART III: SUMMARY: Explain how your time in 4-H has helped you with other things that you do. How has your 4-H club made an impact on your community? Tell about special activities you did during year, like community service. Tell us about your plans for the future (in 4-H and out of 4-H)! EXAMPLE: During my time in 4-H I have learned that it is important to be an active member of your community. Our 4-H Club this year has been very active and has conducted many service projects. Our club visited a nursing home during the Christmas holiday, donated bags of rice to Abraham s tent for Thanksgiving, and volunteered at the animal shelter to play with some of the animals there as well as clean kennels, feed animals, and make sure they are happy. Being a 4-H member will prepare me for the future in many ways. I plan on being a 4-H member until I graduate high school. I plan on attending McNeese State University to study animal science. I know that 4-H will always impact my decisions wherever I go.

Pretend you are a player on your local sports team. What are the different positions necessary to play that game? What characteristics are required of each player for them to be successful? Now think about horses. What are the different uses of horses? What characteristics do horses need to be good at their job? In the chart below, write down the information on the breeds that we talk about during our lesson today! BREED AVERAGE HEIGHT COAT COLOR USES ORIGIN
6 National Nutrition Month Put Your Best Fork Forward! This year s theme is a reminder that every step, and in this case, every bite counts. Just like 1+1=2, every small change adds up. Nutrition is the process by which we provide or obtain the food that is necessary for our bodies to be healthy and grow. You are still growing and during this time it is importation to eat healthy foods and get active. Forming healthy habits at a young age will benefit you all throughout your life. Building healthy habits in our lives and encouraging those around us benefits everyone. There are five things that the National Nutrition Month would like you to focus on. Consider the healthiness of the foods you eat. Participate in cooking at home or encouraging your parents to eat at home. Look at how much you eat and drink and how much you should have. Find activities that you enjoy to become a more active individual. The last key message is to be a healthy adult. When you grow up it is important to have a healthy weight as an adolescent. Do you think about what you eat from day to day? To become a healthy adult, it is important to learn about foods and their benefits at a young age. There are five food groups; grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat and beans. There is also a group called oils and fats. These are the things we don t want to eat too much. We also need to be careful about sweets. By eating foods in all of these groups it helps our bodies get the vitamins and minerals that they need. Try making a colorful rainbow when you eat. By eating a colorful plate with different fruits and vegetables it helps to vary the nutrients that you are putting into your body. If you enjoy cooking, ask your mom or dad if you can help or pick a night that you would like to make the meal. By eating at home you can better control the food you eat and learn about food safety. It is also important to eat the amounts of fruits, vegetables, dairy, grain, and protein that is recommended for your age. Physical activity is important to your health and to the health you will have as an adult. It is important to find things that you enjoy doing, such as soccer, basketball, golf, bicycle riding, or other things that get you moving. With spring right around the corner try finding things that you enjoy and that can get you outside. If you are doing something you like, fitness will not feel like a chore. It is recommended that you have 60 minutes of physical activity each day, but you don t have to do this all at once. To be a healthy adolescent it is important to stay at a healthy weight through eating well and staying active. With these tips and suggestions, you can put your best fork forward in 2017 by keeping up with your diet and exercise, you can become the best you that can help improve your health.
